Chapter 139

Author: Lean
"Yoyo?" Sydney stiffened, snapping her head up. "What did you just call it? Its name is Yoyo too?"

Julian stepped closer and reached for the dog, but it stayed nestled in her arms, ignoring him completely.

'Ungrateful mutt…' He huffed, answering flatly, "It is Yoyo."

"Really?!" Sydney's eyes lit up, glowing under the winter sunset. Her dimples deepened as her face came alive.

Whatever teasing remark Julian had ready died on his lips. Seeing her like this, he couldn't say it.

He gave a light nod. "When have I ever lied to you?"

Just like that, Sydney, usually all steel and stubbornness, burst into tears.

Julian had never lied to her. Sydney knew that.

She hugged the dog tighter and pressed her cheek against its fur, laughing and crying at once. "Yoyo, it's really you?"

"Woof!"

"Yoyo?" she tried again.

"Woof!"

Sydney's joy spilled over. She looked up at Julian, her eyes crescent-shaped with her smile, all past resentment forgotten. She shared excitedly, "Julian, Yoyo really r

Julian had a sharp tongue.Sydney shook her head, grabbed her phone from the bed, and froze at the screen. Seven hours. It took a moment to remember the promise she'd mumbled before falling asleep. Clearing her throat, she stammered, "I-I must've been out cold. Give me a minute."She hung up, freshened up in record time, and changed clothes. When she opened the door, Julian leaned against the wall, bored. At the sight of her, he straightened lazily, his voice flat. "I thought you were going to play dumb and skip out on paying."Sydney slipped on her coat as she stepped outside. "I can afford a suit.""Good. Let's go," Julian said.By the time he pressed the elevator button, Sydney had fully shrugged into her coat. They stood side by side, looking like a married couple heading out together. The elevator arrived quickly. Inside, a young couple held each other close. The woman curled into the man's arms, his hand around her waist. The man gave an embarrassed smile but didn't move.

"Why not?" Raymond pressed, curiosity edged in his tone."Next week," Julian answered instead. He still owed Bruce a favor over the pen. He had to return it somehow."Pretty sure Caleb will come too," Raymond reminded him."Good," Julian replied. His gaze drifted toward the front door, unfocused yet intense. The steady, delicate rhythm of h34 breathing through the earbuds filled the quiet. Just one door separated them now.Raymond caught the subtle undertone and chuckled. "Not worried Caleb will catch on to your little crush?"Then he realized he'd asked a stupid question. Since when had Julian ever cared what anyone thought? As expected, Julian didn't even reply. He checked his watch and shot a pointed look. "You done? You can leave now."Raymond clicked his tongue but didn't move. "Seriously, what are you up to tonight?"The less Julian said, the more suspicious it seemed.Julian ignored him and strode into the bathroom.Left with the dog, Raymond ruffled its head. "C'mon

"What is it?" Sydney asked.Julian hesitated, weighing his words, then finally spoke. His voice was rough, like gravel scraping steel. "You could always consider using yourself to pay—""Babe, I'm back!"The elevator doors slid open. Tiffany stepped out, a purse draped over one arm, takeout bags in the other. Her cheerful voice cut Julian off mid-sentence, sharp and jarring.Sydney bolted upright, eyes locked on Julian. "What did you just say?""Nothing." Julian's tone was flat. He glanced at Tiffany, then stepped back, calling the dog inside.Tiffany clamped a hand over her mouth, shot Sydney a series of frantic looks, and almost screamed, "What the hell was that?""What do you mean, what the hell?" Sydney tugged her toward the door, ushering her inside.Tiffany replayed Julian's expression in her mind. She shook her head. "No way that was nothing. The way he looked at me… He wanted blood. What did he say?""He didn't even finish before you showed up," Sydney said. She took

Caleb hummed. When he turned back, the storm in his eyes had vanished. "You're off work?""Yeap." Penelope looped her arms around his, pouting playfully. "I'm exhausted. Dr. Morales had a ton of patients this morning."Learning under Ryan was tough, but she was picking up skills—at the cost of total exhaustion. She had no idea how Sydney managed the workload alone. Then again, that woman was beneath her. They weren't the same.Caleb studied her quietly. "Did you get the pendant back from Sydney?""Sure did." Penelope smiled, tugging him toward the car.She muttered under her breath, "Don't know what's gotten into her. Maybe she's still holding a grudge over that hotel incident. She kept insisting the pendant wasn't mine. Crazy, right?"She couldn't risk Sydney taking the matter to Caleb herself. It was better to plant the seed first. What she hadn't expected was that Sydney had already anticipated her move.Caleb paused ever so slightly before chuckling softly, his tone warm a

The moment Sydney spoke the name, she saw the feral violence spark in Caleb's gaze.He fixed her with a hard stare. "You're sure you're not mistaken?"Sydney had never seen him like this. Instinctively, she stepped back until her spine hit the car door."I'm sure," she said.Caleb braced his hand against the car, veins standing out under his skin. He forced his voice steady. "Then… Do you still have contact with this friend?"He already knew the answer would be no. In all the years he had known her, he had never seen anyone by her side except Tiffany—and Tiffany was from Jouleston.Sydney kept it simple. "No."She tugged on the car door. "I have things to do. Please move."Caleb slowly withdrew his hand. "Alright…"He stayed rooted, watching her car until it disappeared, then his expression darkened. He pulled out his phone and dialed. "Gordon, get me the records from Mount Pine Orphanage from back then.""All of them?" Gordon sounded surprised."Just the ones close to Penny
