Chapter 1

It wasn't until I drifted out of the dungeon that I realized I was dead.

Guided by the moonlight, I made my way to the living room and found Mom and Dad sitting on the couch with Julia between them.

Mom's eyes were red as tears silently slipped down her cheeks, while Dad turned his face away, unwilling to let his grief make Mom and Julia even more upset.

Julia wore an elegant moon-white dress, but even beneath the warm golden light, there wasn't a trace of color in her face.

She struggled to speak, her voice unmistakably weak. "Mom, Dad, Tessa said she was in pain earlier. Can you let her out? We can celebrate our birthday together."

For the first time, Mom didn't give Julia what she wanted.

She tried to smile, but after struggling for a long moment, all that escaped her was a broken sob.

"You only have today left, and you're still pleading for that liar? You know better than anyone how much she loves pretending to be sick just to get our attention..."

Perhaps Julia looked too pale, because Mom stopped before saying anything crueler.

She finally managed a smile and gently coaxed her, "Today is your birthday. Can you stop thinking about Tessa? I just want you to spend your final birthday happy. One birthday that belongs only to you."

Julia said nothing, but the tight crease between her brows made her disapproval clear.

I walked over and gently leaned against her shoulder.

Because of the curse and Julia's Wolf Wasting Syndrome, Mom and Dad had never allowed me to hug her.

They were always scolding me, driving me away, treating me as though I were Julia's enemy.

As if simply getting too close to her would make her die faster.

Julia saw all of it, and it filled her with guilt.

That guilt was why she always stood in front of me and argued for me whenever Mom and Dad ignored me.

She was the one who convinced them to let me attend a birthday celebration for the first and only time.

When I was nearly killed after being injured by silver, she was the first to find me and call for a healer.

When we were kidnapped together and Mom and Dad only remembered to rescue Julia, she was the one who desperately reminded them that I was still in the rogues' hands.

She was always using her frail body to protect me, trying to make up for every time our parents overlooked me.

"Tessa, it's all my fault. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have had to suffer any of this."

She had once apologized to me with guilt written all over her face.

Mom happened to hear her when she came in with Julia's medicine.

She shoved me aside so hard that I stumbled, then hurried to steady Julia by the shoulders.

"Don't listen to anything Tessa tells you. Whatever she says, it's only because she's jealous of you. She's always been looking for ways to make the curse come true sooner. Have you forgotten?"

I clutched the elbow I'd knocked against the doorframe, overwhelmed with shame.

That had happened when we were ten.

For the first time, I had ranked first in training at the pack academy.

I thought Mom and Dad didn't love me because I wasn't trying hard enough. I believed that if I did well enough, they might finally pay a little more attention to me.

What I didn't know was that Julia had fallen unconscious because of Wolf Wasting Syndrome, and Mom and Dad had no room in their minds for anything but her.

When I excitedly held up my results, Mom's face darkened. She struck the sheet from my hand so hard that the thin paper tore.

She shouted at me, "You're a heartless little monster! Julia is dying, and you can still stand here showing off as if nothing is wrong!"

"You think coming first gives you something to brag about? Why can't you be more like Julia? She's gentle and kind. She doesn't scheme the way you do, always trying to compete with her for our attention!"

"Get out! Until my Julia gets better, I don't want to see you anywhere near me!"

My entire body went rigid. I couldn't understand why Mom was treating me that way.

I turned to Dad, silently begging him for help.

He only glared at me just as coldly and ordered in a low voice, "As Alpha of this pack, I order you to leave."

My heart shattered.

In my grief, the small spark of anger inside me turned toward Julia, lying unconscious on the bed.

Tears streamed down my face as I screamed at my parents, "Why is she the only one you ever see? I hate you! I hate Julia too! She took everything from me! I wish she'd never wake up! Then maybe you'd finally care about me!"

My soul followed Grandma Evelyn home as though pulled there by an invisible force.Seeing the confusion on my face, she suddenly spoke."My dear little Tessa."I froze in place, unable to believe that she could actually see me.With tears in her eyes, Grandma Evelyn reached out toward me, her hand passing through the air before stopping where my face should have been."Don't be afraid. Grandma is the only one who can see you."She took out the gift box meant for me, and inside was a necklace."This necklace was blessed by the Moon Goddess. Whoever wears it can see loved ones who have passed away.""I know how much you love Julia, and I knew losing her would be devastating for you.""I originally planned to give you this so that if Julia passed away as the prophecy foretold, you would still be able to see her and speak with her.""But I never imagined you would be the one who died instead, my poor Tessa.""Thankfully, I wanted to place it in your coffin as the birthday gift I never got

Grandma Evelyn carried me toward the door.Mom, already on the verge of collapse, realized what she was doing and rushed forward, trying to take me from her arms.Grandma Evelyn stepped aside and avoided her, her gaze turning cold. "Helena, if you truly love Tessa, then let her go where she belongs instead of keeping her here just so she can watch the two of you put on a show of loving her."Mom collapsed onto the floor and looked up at Evelyn in despair. "I was wrong. I really was wrong. Grandma Evelyn, please let Tessa stay with me. She's my child..."Dad dropped to his knees as well, his tall frame bending under the weight of his grief as he begged Evelyn again and again not to take me away.Grandma Evelyn refused them. She gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from my cheek and looked down at me with tenderness."You never gave Tessa the love and care she deserved. She doesn't belong to you. She is a child of the Moon Goddess."With that, she turned and continued toward the

Before long, everyone in the pack learned of my death. They came in grief to ask when the funeral would be held, but Dad drove them all away and stubbornly insisted that I was only asleep.Again and again, he reached out to other packs for help, begging them to send their healers to treat me.Eventually, the matter reached the Royal Healing Hall.Grandma Evelyn could no longer bear to watch. She came to the Alpha's residence and found Dad still holding my body tightly in his arms, refusing to let me go."Alpha Vincent, Tessa is dead. Let her rest. Stop putting her through this."The words struck him like a blade. His entire body began to tremble, but he couldn't say a single word.Mom suddenly rushed out of the bedroom and glared at Grandma Evelyn in fury."Elder, you loved Tessa more than anyone. How can you curse her just like everyone else?"She looked completely worn down, her face gaunt and her whole body carrying an unhealthy, disheveled exhaustion.Grandma Evelyn wasn't shaken b

By the time Julia woke up, it was already noon.Mom had stayed beside her the entire time, her eyes red and swollen from crying. The moment Julia opened her eyes, Mom forced out a strained smile and kept repeating, "You're awake. Thank goodness you're awake. As long as you're all right, Julia... I can't lose another daughter."Julia looked at her and asked through a choked voice, "Where's Tessa?"Tears immediately welled in Mom's eyes and fell onto their clasped hands. She could only shake her head, unable to form a complete sentence.Julia stopped asking. Instead, she threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed."Stop, Julia!" Mom pressed her back down. "The healer said you need to rest. You can't get up.""I need to see Tessa." Julia's voice was weak, but there was a firmness in it that left no room for argument. She pushed Mom's hand away and forced herself to stand, swaying badly from weakness but refusing to sit back down."Mom, I just want to see her one last time. "What do you mean, playing tricks?"Mom hurried after him. She pushed past Dad, but the moment she saw what was inside the dungeon, she froze in the doorway too."Tessa? What's wrong?"Her voice was even softer now, like mist in the morning light that could disappear with the slightest touch."Tessa..."Calling my name, Mom swayed forward as though she wanted to come help me, yet some part of her seemed terrified that getting any closer would confirm the horrible possibility already forming in her mind.In the end, she could only grab Dad's arm to keep herself standing."Vincent, it's already morning. Why isn't Tessa getting up?"Dad didn't answer.Standing behind him, I couldn't see his expression. All I could see was the faint trembling running through his body.Julia soon arrived at the dungeon as well, forcing her weakened body to carry her there. The moon-white dress she wore was already stained with grass from how desperately she had rushed over. She leaned out from behind Mom an

By early evening, I caught a familiar scent and drifted back toward the living room.It was Elder Evelyn, the only person in the pack who had ever loved me more than Julia.I had always called her Grandma Evelyn. She was carrying two gift boxes, but there was little happiness on her face.I knew that although she favored me, she loved Julia too.Everyone believed Julia would die that day, and under that shadow, no one could truly be happy."Is Julia here? I'd like to see her."Mom wiped at the corner of her eye and answered hoarsely, "She's in her room. I'll go get her.""There's no need." Evelyn stopped her. "Let her rest. I'll see her tonight."Mom nodded. Then Evelyn asked, "Where's Tessa? Let her come out and open her present first."Mom avoided her gaze, hesitating so badly that she couldn't form a proper answer.Evelyn immediately sensed that something was wrong, and her voice sharpened. "Where exactly is Tessa?""Tessa was throwing a tantrum, so I... locked her in the dungeon to
