Chapter 4

Author: Cece West
By early evening, I caught a familiar scent and drifted back toward the living room.

It was Elder Evelyn, the only person in the pack who had ever loved me more than Julia.

I had always called her Grandma Evelyn.

She was carrying two gift boxes, but there was little happiness on her face.

I knew that although she favored me, she loved Julia too.

Everyone believed Julia would die that day, and under that shadow, no one could truly be happy.

"Is Julia here? I'd like to see her."

Mom wiped at the corner of her eye and answered hoarsely, "She's in her room. I'll go get her."

"There's no need." Evelyn stopped her. "Let her rest. I'll see her tonight."

Mom nodded.

Then Evelyn asked, "Where's Tessa? Let her come out and open her present first."

Mom avoided her gaze, hesitating so badly that she couldn't form a proper answer.

Evelyn immediately sensed that something was wrong, and her voice sharpened. "Where exactly is Tessa?"

"Tessa was throwing a tantrum, so I... locked her in the dungeon to reflect on her behavior."

"What did you say?" Evelyn turned toward the dungeon at once. "She's your daughter, not a prisoner. Why would you treat her like that?"

Mom's tears fell harder, but she refused to move aside.

"Elder, I just wanted Julia to have this last day entirely to herself."

"This is the last time I'll ever have with her. I don't want Tessa coming out and causing trouble. You know how hostile she always is toward Vincent and me."

"She's hostile because you and Vincent gave all your love to Julia and never paid any attention to Tessa!"

Grandma Evelyn stopped in anger, defending me without hesitation. "Everyone in this pack knows that."

"But what else was I supposed to do?" Mom covered her face as tears slipped through her fingers.

"Julia only has sixteen years. Once today is over, I'll lose her forever."

"Tessa still has her whole life ahead of her. Vincent and I will have time to make it up to her..."

Grandma Evelyn looked at her with unmistakable disappointment, clearly refusing to accept that excuse.

She was about to continue toward the dungeon and let me out when Dad suddenly appeared.

He stepped into her path and blocked her way.

"Elder, I'm not punishing my daughter as her father right now. I'm disciplining a member of this pack as its Alpha. Tessa refuses to follow orders, and there is nothing wrong with what I've done. If you insist on interfering, we can call a meeting of the Elder Council tomorrow and let them decide."

Evelyn stopped.

She knew that if she accepted Dad's decision, there was still a chance I would be released the next day.

If the matter went before the Elder Council, however, I could end up locked away for much longer.

"You'd better not regret this. You can't make up for everything."

Neither Mom nor Dad answered.

That evening, the birthday celebration was heavy with sorrow.

One by one, every member of the pack came forward to offer Julia their blessings while the moonlight rested softly over the gathering.

Everyone prayed for a miracle, hoping that kind, gentle Julia might somehow survive.

Time passed slowly.

The moon sank toward the horizon, and pale daylight gradually began to spread across the sky.

When the first ray of sunlight touched the Temple of the Moon Goddess, the long silence finally broke.

"Julia, you're alive!"

Julia stared in complete disbelief.

Mom and Dad pulled her into their arms and burst into tears of joy.

The prophecy had haunted everyone for far too long, and the unexpected ending sent the whole pack into celebration.

Then Grandma Evelyn rose to her feet, her trembling lips cutting through everyone's happiness.

"The Moon Goddess's prophecies are never wrong. If Julia is alive..."

Mom and Dad's faces changed instantly.

Dad was the first to rush out of the temple and run toward the dungeon.

The cold underground corridor was utterly lifeless, without even a trace of light.

He threw open the dungeon door, then froze as all the color drained from his face.

His vacant eyes fixed on my body lying facedown on the floor, and when he finally spoke, his voice was so soft that it sounded as though he were afraid of shattering an illusion.

"Tessa, Mom and Dad are here. You're only joking, aren't you?"

My soul followed Grandma Evelyn home as though pulled there by an invisible force.Seeing the confusion on my face, she suddenly spoke."My dear little Tessa."I froze in place, unable to believe that she could actually see me.With tears in her eyes, Grandma Evelyn reached out toward me, her hand passing through the air before stopping where my face should have been."Don't be afraid. Grandma is the only one who can see you."She took out the gift box meant for me, and inside was a necklace."This necklace was blessed by the Moon Goddess. Whoever wears it can see loved ones who have passed away.""I know how much you love Julia, and I knew losing her would be devastating for you.""I originally planned to give you this so that if Julia passed away as the prophecy foretold, you would still be able to see her and speak with her.""But I never imagined you would be the one who died instead, my poor Tessa.""Thankfully, I wanted to place it in your coffin as the birthday gift I never got

"Helena, if you truly love Tessa, then let her go where she belongs instead of keeping her here just so she can watch the two of you put on a show of loving her."Mom collapsed onto the floor and looked up at Evelyn in despair. "I was wrong. I really was wrong. Grandma Evelyn, please let Tessa stay with me. She's my child..."Dad dropped to his knees as well, his tall frame bending under the weight of his grief as he begged Evelyn again and again not to take me away.Grandma Evelyn refused them. She gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from my cheek and looked down at me with tenderness."You never gave Tessa the love and care she deserved. She doesn't belong to you. She is a child of the Moon Goddess."With that, she turned and continued toward the

Before long, everyone in the pack learned of my death. They came in grief to ask when the funeral would be held, but Dad drove them all away and stubbornly insisted that I was only asleep.Again and again, he reached out to other packs for help, begging them to send their healers to treat me.Eventually, the matter reached the Royal Healing Hall.Grandma Evelyn could no longer bear to watch. She came to the Alpha's residence and found Dad still holding my body tightly in his arms, refusing to let me go."Alpha Vincent, Tessa is dead. Let her rest. Stop putting her through this."The words struck him like a blade. His entire body began to tremble, but he couldn't say a single word.Mom suddenly rushed out of the bedroom and glared at Grandma Evelyn in fury."Elder, you loved Tessa more than anyone. How can you curse her just like everyone else?"She looked completely worn down, her face gaunt and her whole body carrying an unhealthy, disheveled exhaustion.Grandma Evelyn wasn't shaken b

By the time Julia woke up, it was already noon.Mom had stayed beside her the entire time, her eyes red and swollen from crying. The moment Julia opened her eyes, Mom forced out a strained smile and kept repeating, "You're awake. Thank goodness you're awake. As long as you're all right, Julia... I can't lose another daughter."Julia looked at her and asked through a choked voice, "Where's Tessa?"Tears immediately welled in Mom's eyes and fell onto their clasped hands. She could only shake her head, unable to form a complete sentence.Julia stopped asking. Instead, she threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed."Stop, Julia!" Mom pressed her back down. "The healer said you need to rest. You can't get up.""I need to see Tessa." Julia's voice was weak, but there was a firmness in it that left no room for argument. She pushed Mom's hand away and forced herself to stand, swaying badly from weakness but refusing to sit back down."Mom, I just want to see her one last time. "What do you mean, playing tricks?"Mom hurried after him. She pushed past Dad, but the moment she saw what was inside the dungeon, she froze in the doorway too."Tessa? What's wrong?"Her voice was even softer now, like mist in the morning light that could disappear with the slightest touch."Tessa..."Calling my name, Mom swayed forward as though she wanted to come help me, yet some part of her seemed terrified that getting any closer would confirm the horrible possibility already forming in her mind.In the end, she could only grab Dad's arm to keep herself standing."Vincent, it's already morning. Why isn't Tessa getting up?"Dad didn't answer.Standing behind him, I couldn't see his expression.
