Chapter 3

Author: Cece West
Julia was eventually persuaded to return to her room, while Mom and Dad sank wearily onto the couch.

After a long silence, Dad finally said, "Maybe we should let Tessa out. It's the last day. At least let the sisters say goodbye."

Mom's eyes reddened at once, but she still shook her head.

"No."

She wiped away her tears, struggling to keep herself from breaking down.

"She'll have to put up with this one last time. This is Julia's final birthday. Once today is over, I'll make it up to Tessa properly. Whatever she wants, she can have."

Then, as though she were trying to convince herself, Mom added, "Tessa will understand."

Dad said nothing more and asked a servant to prepare a steak.

Carrying the plate to the dungeon, he stopped outside the iron door and spoke gently. "Tessa, Dad brought you some steak. Get up and eat something."

I drifted through the door and saw my own body lying facedown on the floor, stiff and motionless, my skin already taking on a grayish-blue hue.

Not a sound came from inside.

Dad's patience began to wear thin.

As Alpha of the pack, he believed that even his own daughter had no right to defy his orders.

His expression hardened as he addressed the silent cell. "Tessa, I thought Helena was being too harsh when she locked you in here, but now I can see she was right. You really do need to learn to correct this behavior."

I floated in front of him, my eyes burning with desperation.

"Dad, please open the door and look at me. I'm not disobeying you. I'm dead. Please, just go inside and look."

"Tessa, are you really going to keep sulking?"

Dad's commanding voice echoed through the corridor, making the silence behind the iron door feel even more absolute.

When his patience finally ran out, he dropped the plate of steak outside and left me with one final warning. "Think carefully about what you've done, Tessa. You're staying in here tomorrow too."

Watching him walk away, I whispered, "Dad, I'll never get another chance to come out."

The corridor fell silent again.

I curled up in the corner with my arms around my knees, unwilling to go back upstairs and watch Mom and Dad pour all their love into Julia.

Before long, the door leading to the dungeon opened again.

Mom stepped inside and crouched where Dad had been standing moments earlier, pressing her entire palm against the iron door as though she might somehow feel me through it.

But the bond that could truly connect us remained dark and silent.

"Tessa, don't blame me, okay?"

Her voice was soft, heavy with exhaustion and grief.

"I know this isn't fair to you, but Julia doesn't have much time left. Just let her have this one last day."

"Once today is over, everything will be yours. Your father and I will make it up to you."

"From now on, we'll celebrate only your birthday. I'll even bake your cake myself."

A faint smile touched her face, as though she could already see the happy day when she would make that cake for me.

"And the beautiful dresses will be yours too. I'll have a designer make one just for you, something no one else in the world has. We can make it pink, your favorite color."

As she spoke, a flicker of guilt crossed her face.

"And the full moon too. Next time, I'll stay with you the entire night. I won't let you get hurt again."

I stared at her, a complicated ache rising in my chest.

On the night of the full moon, one of the werewolves had lost control. I had gone out to pick flowers for Mom and hadn't made it home in time, and the crazed wolf had clawed me.

Afraid Mom and Dad would dislike me even more because of it, I had never dared to tell them.

Julia eventually sensed through our bond that I had been hurt and secretly gave me some of her own medicine.

So Mom had known all along.

A sudden fear seized me. Did she think I had taken Julia's medicine and made her condition worse?

The thought frightened me so badly that I almost began to tremble.

But Mom didn't blame me. Instead, she continued speaking softly through the door. "Tessa, once this is over, everything will be yours. Just today. Can you let today belong to Julia alone?"

Okay, Mom. Even if you hadn't locked me in here, I would have given this day to Julia.

Without thinking, I moved closer, wanting to feel the rare warmth in Mom's voice.

Before I could reach her, however, she suddenly rose to her feet. After receiving no response from me, her tone sharpened without warning.

"I've already lowered myself this much to beg you, and you still won't say a single word! Are you still angry with me? Why can't you just be a little more understanding?"

As if something inside her had snapped, Mom began lashing out wildly, one cruel accusation after another spilling from her mouth.

I stood frozen, unable to react for a long time.

Only after the corridor was empty again did I realize my face was wet.

So even a soul could cry.

My soul followed Grandma Evelyn home as though pulled there by an invisible force.Seeing the confusion on my face, she suddenly spoke."My dear little Tessa."I froze in place, unable to believe that she could actually see me.With tears in her eyes, Grandma Evelyn reached out toward me, her hand passing through the air before stopping where my face should have been."Don't be afraid. Grandma is the only one who can see you."She took out the gift box meant for me, and inside was a necklace."This necklace was blessed by the Moon Goddess. Whoever wears it can see loved ones who have passed away.""I know how much you love Julia, and I knew losing her would be devastating for you.""I originally planned to give you this so that if Julia passed away as the prophecy foretold, you would still be able to see her and speak with her.""But I never imagined you would be the one who died instead, my poor Tessa.""Thankfully, I wanted to place it in your coffin as the birthday gift I never got

Grandma Evelyn carried me toward the door.Mom, already on the verge of collapse, realized what she was doing and rushed forward, trying to take me from her arms.Grandma Evelyn stepped aside and avoided her, her gaze turning cold. "Helena, if you truly love Tessa, then let her go where she belongs instead of keeping her here just so she can watch the two of you put on a show of loving her."Mom collapsed onto the floor and looked up at Evelyn in despair. "I was wrong. I really was wrong. Grandma Evelyn, please let Tessa stay with me. She's my child..."Dad dropped to his knees as well, his tall frame bending under the weight of his grief as he begged Evelyn again and again not to take me away.Grandma Evelyn refused them. She gently brushed the loose strands of hair away from my cheek and looked down at me with tenderness."You never gave Tessa the love and care she deserved. She doesn't belong to you. She is a child of the Moon Goddess."With that, she turned and continued toward the

Before long, everyone in the pack learned of my death. They came in grief to ask when the funeral would be held, but Dad drove them all away and stubbornly insisted that I was only asleep.Again and again, he reached out to other packs for help, begging them to send their healers to treat me.Eventually, the matter reached the Royal Healing Hall.Grandma Evelyn could no longer bear to watch. She came to the Alpha's residence and found Dad still holding my body tightly in his arms, refusing to let me go."Alpha Vincent, Tessa is dead. Let her rest. Stop putting her through this."The words struck him like a blade. His entire body began to tremble, but he couldn't say a single word.Mom suddenly rushed out of the bedroom and glared at Grandma Evelyn in fury."Elder, you loved Tessa more than anyone. How can you curse her just like everyone else?"She looked completely worn down, her face gaunt and her whole body carrying an unhealthy, disheveled exhaustion.Grandma Evelyn wasn't shaken b

By the time Julia woke up, it was already noon.Mom had stayed beside her the entire time, her eyes red and swollen from crying. The moment Julia opened her eyes, Mom forced out a strained smile and kept repeating, "You're awake. Thank goodness you're awake. As long as you're all right, Julia... I can't lose another daughter."Julia looked at her and asked through a choked voice, "Where's Tessa?"Tears immediately welled in Mom's eyes and fell onto their clasped hands. She could only shake her head, unable to form a complete sentence.Julia stopped asking. Instead, she threw back the covers and tried to get out of bed."Stop, Julia!" Mom pressed her back down. "The healer said you need to rest. You can't get up.""I need to see Tessa." Julia's voice was weak, but there was a firmness in it that left no room for argument. She pushed Mom's hand away and forced herself to stand, swaying badly from weakness but refusing to sit back down."Mom, I just want to see her one last time. "What do you mean, playing tricks?"Mom hurried after him. She pushed past Dad, but the moment she saw what was inside the dungeon, she froze in the doorway too."Tessa? What's wrong?"Her voice was even softer now, like mist in the morning light that could disappear with the slightest touch."Tessa..."Calling my name, Mom swayed forward as though she wanted to come help me, yet some part of her seemed terrified that getting any closer would confirm the horrible possibility already forming in her mind.In the end, she could only grab Dad's arm to keep herself standing."Vincent, it's already morning. Why isn't Tessa getting up?"Dad didn't answer.Standing behind him, I couldn't see his expression. All I could see was the faint trembling running through his body.Julia soon arrived at the dungeon as well, forcing her weakened body to carry her there. The moon-white dress she wore was already stained with grass from how desperately she had rushed over. She leaned out from behind Mom an

By early evening, I caught a familiar scent and drifted back toward the living room.It was Elder Evelyn, the only person in the pack who had ever loved me more than Julia.I had always called her Grandma Evelyn. She was carrying two gift boxes, but there was little happiness on her face.I knew that although she favored me, she loved Julia too.Everyone believed Julia would die that day, and under that shadow, no one could truly be happy."Is Julia here? I'd like to see her."Mom wiped at the corner of her eye and answered hoarsely, "She's in her room. I'll go get her.""There's no need." Evelyn stopped her. "Let her rest. I'll see her tonight."Mom nodded. Then Evelyn asked, "Where's Tessa? Let her come out and open her present first."Mom avoided her gaze, hesitating so badly that she couldn't form a proper answer.Evelyn immediately sensed that something was wrong, and her voice sharpened. "Where exactly is Tessa?""Tessa was throwing a tantrum, so I... locked her in the dungeon to
