Thorne’s POV

The Blackthorn valley had been quiet for eleven days, and I hated every minute of it.

Quiet meant the wounded were healing. Quiet meant Rowan had finally stopped waking at night with her claws out. Quiet meant the pack had gone back to counting loaves and mending roofs and burying what we could find of the dead.

It also meant we all had time to think about the man who used to be our alpha.

I stood on the lodge porch at dawn, a mug of Liora

Kael’s POVI smelled them before I saw them.Wet wolf and old frost, and under it a sour, rotting sweetness that made my skin crawl. I held up a fist, and two hundred wolves went still behind me.The Weeping Falls dropped off the cliff ahead in a single silver ribbon, three hundred feet of white water thundering into a black pool. Mist drifted up in cold sheets. Behind the curtain of the falls, if Valeria was right, a cavern waited, the door Aislin Stormborn had built twenty-three years ago for children she was afraid she would never see again.“They’re in the trees,” I said. “Left and right. Thirty, maybe forty.”Dax came up beside me, broadsword already out. “Kai?”“No.” I tasted the air. “Vero.”His jaw tightened. Elara had told us what Thorne’s message said. Seventeen wolves had run north with the Hollow Alpha. Some of them must have turned back.“Take the left flank,” I said. “I’ll take the right. Don’

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 51: The King and the Cold

Elara’s POVWe rode for the Weeping Falls before the sun was fully up.I would have ridden through the mountain itself. But Rico could not shift without the black veins surging toward his heart, and Valeria, who had arrived in a panic at dawn with four of her sisters, said that if he tried again the cold would take him whole. So we traveled slowly, on sleds and horses, the Seers and the coven and two hundred wolves, and Rico rode beside me with his jaw clenched so hard I could hear his teeth.By noon the veins had reached his collarbone.“Tell me what you feel,” I said, low, so only he could hear.“Cold.” He did not look at me. “And a voice. It’s very patient.”“What does it say?”“That you’re afraid.” He laughed, dry and humorless. “That you’re right to be.”I reached across the gap between our horses and took his hand. It was freezing, the skin gone gray at the fingertips. Through the bond I felt it: a vast, slow pressure at the base of his mind, like a glacier grinding toward a hou

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 50: The Heart Thief

Zoe’s POV I hummed the lullaby my father used to hum. It was the only thing I had left of him. A tune with no words, three falling notes and a long rise, the song he sang when the snow got so deep that we could not leave our hut for days. Flame liked it. She curled into her blankets with her small fist against her mouth and her green light dimmed to a soft glow, and I thought, as I had thought every night for weeks: I will not do it. I will not. The voice had been in my dreams since the citadel. It never shouted. It spoke the way my father used to, gentle and tired and patient. It told me things only he would know. The color of the door he had painted blue. The name of the dog we had lost the winter he died. It told me I was brave. It told me I was loved. It told me he was not dead. Only sleeping, little one, it said. Only held beneath a mountain, in the cold, waiting for you. All I ask is a small thing. A walk to the old well. A child carried out into the night. She will not

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 49: Violet Debts

Elara’s POV Seline reached the watchtower on the third night, half dead from running. She stumbled through the gate with frost in her braids and dried blood down one arm, and Dax caught her before she hit the stones. She was still gasping when she delivered Thorne’s message. “Kai came to the valley. Thorne faced him in the circle.” She swallowed. “He’s alive. He’s alpha now. But Kai got away, north, with fifteen wolves. Liora says something has hold of him.” I closed my eyes. Beside me, Rico’s hand went tight on my shoulder. “Thorne asked if you would send word to Valeria,” Seline added. “Liora says the coven has been watching the Frostveil for weeks. She thinks they know more than they’ve said.” “Then we won’t send word,” I said. “We’ll go.” The Evergreen coven’s grove lay a day’s ride west, in a hollow of black pines so old their roots had split the mountain. Violet witchlight pulsed along the vines. I felt it as I crossed the boundary, a hum in my teeth, the same hum that h

Quiet meant the pack had gone back to counting loaves and mending roofs and burying what we could find of the dead.It also meant we all had time to think about the man who used to be our alpha.I stood on the lodge porch at dawn, a mug of Liora’s bitter tea going cold in my hand, and watched the northern ridge. Behind me the great hall hummed with the low voices of a council that had met every night since Kai walked out of the valley. Garrick wanted to wait. Jaren wanted to hunt. Mira had spent days in the archive hunting for a precedent for a pack with no alpha.I had been avoiding the real question. Everyone had.“You’re doing it again,” said a voice at my elbow.Rowan leaned against the porch post, auburn

  • One Night,One Claim   Chapter 47: What the Mountain Remembers

Elara’s POVNobody slept after Flame woke.Rico lit the great brazier in the center of the watchtower and fed it Frostveil pine until the blue flames stood as high as a man’s chest. We sat in a circle around it on furs and broken stones: Rico and me, Dax and Kael, Riven, and the six Seers in their frost-stiff cloaks. Flame lay across my lap, finally asleep, one small hand twisted in my hair. Every time the fire dipped, my arm tightened around her.Laura stood on the other side of the flames. In the light she looked older than I remembered, the lines around her mouth carved deep.“You’ve known,” I said. It wasn’t a question. “Since the citadel. Since before.”“Since before you were born.” Laura didn’t flinch. “I served your mate’s household for two years to watch the bridge come awake. I did not lie to you, child. I only did not say.”Rico’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing. His hand found my knee and held on.An o
