AURORA'S POV.
I looked at my reflection in front of the mirror as the makeup artists applied light makeup to my face.
The makeup artists, Ms Aria and her assistant Elaine, won't stop teasing me about how beautiful and hot I looked, and I could not help but laugh with them.
Ms Aria applied lip gloss on my lips while Elaine zipped up the white fitted gown that I wore.
The two of them stood behind me and stared at my reflection while I did the same too.
Truthfully, it was not a joke. I looked extraordinarily beautiful, just the way I liked it. Maverick will keep looking at me and no one else but the makeup is not too much.
“Honestly, you're breathtaking. It's not a joke," Ms Aria said, just as if she read my mind. I smiled and nodded.
I stood up and left the room feeling satisfied with my new look. Guests are around but Maverick is nowhere to be found.
"Aurora, I'm done with my work here. I'm going to meet your parents" Ms Aria said and left.
"You look good, Aurora, and I'm glad Ms Aria finally got to do some magic on your face," Elai?e said. I smiled at her and she nodded at me before leaving. As soon as the two of them left my side, I brought out my phone and dialled Maverick's line.
He's not picking up.
What's going on? Is he okay?? Is he not supposed to be here yet? I dialled his line again and he's not picking up.
Without giving up, I called him again, and he picked up the call for the third time.
"Maverick!"
"Babe, I'm sorry, an emergency came up at work. You know I love you. Don't worry you will see me soon" He rushed his words, and I smiled just at the sound of his voice.
He really has a way of making my heart flutter for him. "Okay, babe" I smiled and cut the call.
I went upstairs to my parent's room to greet them. I got upstairs and knocked on their door gently before going in.
Astrid is with them as she snuggles herself on Father. I greeted them, and I got no response from them.
"Is Maverick here?" Astrid asked, as she gave me a glance and I nodded negatively.
"We have organised your engagement party, and hope you are satisfied with it?" Father asked, in a nonchalant voice and I nodded immediately.
I don't know why my father detests me. I have done every possible thing to please them but it was just as if I was hurting myself more.
My father organised the engagement party because of Maverick, who insisted he wanted an engagement party, and my father had to comply. And I was the one that urged him to request it from my dad.
All the clothes that I wore all my life were Astrid clothes. Father had never spent a dime on me, and I could tell that he was not pleased with the engagement party he had organized for me and Maverick.
"Are you going to stay here forever or get out?" Astrid asked, interjecting my thoughts. I flickered my eyelashes and left the room.
What can I do to please them? Why do my family endure tormenting me emotionally?? Those questions ran through my mind, and I don't know when a tear drops from my eyes.
A maid passed by and accidentally spilt a drink on my white gown. The maid scoffed, "Not my fault; next time,, you shouldn't have blocked my way," She said and left.
Well, I don't blame her. My stepmom made them treat me like this, and no one gave me regard in this house.
I felt water dripping on my face and I touched my cheek to see a teardrop. I sniffed hard and went straight to my room.
Aurora, get yourself together, remember you promise you won't shed any tears today.
I got inside my room and pulled off the stained white fitted gown that I wore and wore a white gown. It was given to me by Maverick as a gift.
If not for the gowns Maverick bought for me, only god knows what I would have worn to replace the stained dress. I don't have any other presentable gown. He bought two white gowns for me and I'm wearing the second gown now.
I wore the dress, and it brought out my hourglass shape but it's too tight.
I won't wear this dress again after today. I went out of the room and saw Maverick at the doorstep.
"Maverick" He hugged me immediately and kissed my cheek as he smiled brightly at me.
"You miss me?" He teased, and I looked away shyly. He brought his lip closer to mine and was about to kiss it when I shoved my face sideways.
He grunted and tried to kiss my lip again, but I shoved it in another direction.
"Babe, what's wrong?" Maverick asked, groaning as he placed his head on my shoulder. I looked at him and could see how irritated he was.
"I'm not feeling too good"
"That you can't kiss your fiancée?" He questioned and I looked away immediately.
Maverick stood straight and walked out on me. I ran after him as he walked outside and when we got outside, he yanked my hand away.
"Aurora, what's the problem?? You did not allow me to touch you, I never complained and now I can't kiss my fiancée?" He snapped, and I could get a hint that he was angry at me.
Maverick placed his hand on my shoulder and brought his face closer to mine.
"Are you mad at me?" I asked and he breathed on my shoulder.
"Go and welcome the guest," He said, and I nodded my head negatively. He's mad at him, but can't he be patient with me?
We have been together for a year now, and our marriage will be in the next three months. Can't he be a little patient? It's almost three months now.
"We agreed not to have anything together until the wedding night, and the wedding is fast approaching. Can't you be a little patient with me?" I said, and a groan escaped from his mouth.
"I will try to, let's talk later; I have work to do," Maverick said and left.
"Maverick," I called.
His phone rang, and I saw a faint picture of a woman displayed on his phone screen. He looked at me and walked out.
ARLO’S POV“Arlo, are you even here at all?” Gideon said, tapping my thighs. He jolted me back to reality.“Man, what’s wrong with you? You blanked out completely, and I am certain that you didn’t hear a single word I have been saying,” Gideon stated worriedly.“When did you start talking?” I asked. The last time I remembered, we had both been silent, which was what even made my mind drift to a place I never wanted to go back to in the first place. Even though I was back to reality now, my heart still ached and squeezed tightly, which was exactly why I didn’t like to think back on those dark days filled with so much tears, anger, pain, regret, and bitterness.Because it never got better.Instead, it became worst until she could no longer bear it anymore. The thought of it made my heart colder than it already was. That is exactly what it does to me. No one understands why I can’t smile or laugh like everyone else. No one understands why my heart is as cold as ice, because no one went
ARLO’S POV“Didn’t I ask you to go to the room, Arlo?” She had asked me angrily. Then as I looked more into her eyes, I noticed that she was also ashamed.Ashamed and embarrassed that I had heard what she didn’t want me to hear or see her in so much tears and pain.“I am sorry, mum,” I had apologized meekly.“Why didn’t you go?” She had asked me bitterly.“You were so upset and unhappy, and…and I didn’t want to leave you alone,” I had responded, stuttering.I was just a little boy, but then that was half-lie and half-truth. “Still, you should have listened to me. I don’t like it when you act really stubborn, Arlo, and you know this! If you hadn’t punched that kid, you would be in school by now,” she had scolded me really angrily.I didn’t realize it then, but I got to know much later that she always liked it when I was away at school because that was the time that she had to try to beg and cajole and force Sir Bronson to accept me as his son and take responsibility. Then at night, sh
ARLO’S POVFirst of all, she had taken me to see the school head the next morning. As soon as the others saw us, most of them began to jeer at me.“The illegitimate abandoned son!”It had been so horrifying and humiliating that I had wanted us to turn and leave immediately. I knew there and then that I was never returning to this school.“Listen, Maria, we can’t have him here anymore,” the stoic woman had told my mum.She had become sad and emotional instantly. “Please, you can’t send Arlo out of school. This is the only school around that I can afford,” she had begged, almost sobbing.“Then he should have thought of that before knocking off a boy’s tooth,” she had said tightly, glaring at me. “As a matter of fact, you should be grateful that his parents are not pressing charges,” she had added. We all knew that they weren’t pressing charges because they wouldn’t be able to afford it. We were all poor.“I am willing to tender a heartfelt apology to them. Arlo would also do the same,
ARLO’S POV“Why did you change your mind?” Gideon asked me as he drove us out of the damn company.Even his lousy secretary couldn’t even ask us if we had successfully seen him or why we were leaving so soon.I couldn’t even control the anger that rose inside of me.“It was either that or go in there and beat him to a pulp,” I said through clenched teeth.“But you can’t continue to beat up every man that upsets you, Arlo,” Gideon cautioned.“That’s why I left,” I said. “He is such a deadbeat to have sold his daughter out like that,” I added.“My stomach churned when I heard him make that statement,” Gideon affirmed. “For the first time, Arlo, trust me, I wanted to punch him badly,” Gideon revealed.I didn’t doubt him, because I felt the same way, and for Gideon who had never lifted a finger to touch a single soul unlike me, to feel like punching him, then Aurora’s father deserved it.“And I would be damned to give that greedy bastard a dime from my hard-earned money,” I stated tightly
ARLO’S POV“You do remember everything we have talked about, right?” I asked Gideon as he parked in the parking lot.“How could I forget? Would you even let me?” He teased. But at least, he was no longer talking about feeling that the money I was about to give Aurora’s father was too much and certainly undeserving of him.As we walked towards the entrance, we looked around. It was one of those small companies that would never grow bigger than it was already, and I knew this. Any good businessman with the right eyes could tell.“This place looks like it is just struggling to survive,” Gideon stated what was on my mind out loud.“Well, not all businessmen are going to thrive and succeed,” I simply said.“You are right. As long as he has a company, lives in a mansion in the elite part of the city with his family, and has trust funds for his children, he is considered an elite, whereas the real wealthy men like you are not being pronounced,” Gideon said.“That doesn’t matter now. All we a
AURORA’S POVI quickly hurried into the restroom at my workplace, checked to ensure that no one was there before calling Eudora in excitement. Then I prayed fervently that she should pick up, because I understood how busy she could get.Eventually, my prayer got answered because she picked almost immediately,“You won’t believe what I have to tell you!” Eudora squealed delightfully as soon as the call connected. She was always doing it.She wouldn’t call, but when I call, she always wants to talk first. Anyway, Eudora still remains my best friend even though she can be very annoying sometimes. However, I didn’t want her to have her way this time around.“Eudora, listen!” I yelled, but in a whisper.Gosh, she could be so overbearing and frustrating sometimes.“You also have something to tell me?” Eudora asked.“Apparently, otherwise why would I be calling you?” I asked her, rolling my eyes. “And I need to quickly say this before we both have to get back to what we have to do,” I added.
