Gabriella's Pov

I looked at my father. He was watching Davis with an expression I could not read.

"You want to know why I have not slept with you?" Davis said. The room went very still. "Because the thought of you under me, pretending to enjoy it, performing for me like you perform for everyone else in your life — it does nothing for me. You are beautiful, Gabriella. Everyone can see that. But beauty without submission is useless. And you have never submitted to anything in your life."

"Davis,

Gabriella's POV "I did not lose to you at every single game.""You did not win a single game.""I won the pinball machine.""You played one round of pinball. You scored three points. Three. The machine gave you pity points."Mariano shook his head and walked toward the next game. It was a basketball shooting machine. A hoop with a net and a line of basketballs."Basketball," he said. "I can do basketball.""Famous last words."He picked up a basketball and shot it. It bounced off the rim and rolled away. He picked up another one. It bounced off the backboard and hit him in the face.I burst out laughing. I could not help it. The sound came out loud and uncontrolled."Stop laughing," he said."I cannot stop.""Gabriella.""The ball hit you in the face. Your own ball. The one you threw.""That was a bad throw.""Every throw is a bad throw."He picked up another ball and shot it. It went through the hoop. Clean and perfect. He looked at me with a smug expression."One lucky shot," I sai

Gabriella's POV"Are you kidding me?"Mariano stared at the screen in front of him. The words "GAME OVER" were flashing in bright red letters. His score was displayed underneath. It was embarrassingly low. Lower than my score. Lower than any score I had ever seen on a racing game.I covered my mouth with my hand. I was trying very hard not to laugh. But the look on his face was too much. His jaw was tight. His eyes were narrowed. He looked like he was about to punch the machine."I cannot believe that just happened," he said."I can." I leaned against the machine and smiled at him. "You crashed into every single wall on the track.""I did not crash into every wall.""You crashed into the first wall. Then the second wall. Then the third wall. Then you drove backwards for a full minute.""That was a strategic decision.""It was a terrible decision."He turned to look at me. His expression was flat. "I am going to pretend you did not say that.""Pretend all you want. I have witnesses." I

Gabriella's POV I appreciated that more than I could say. The car stopped in front of a large building with a neon sign that read "LUCKY STRIKE" in flickering letters. There were no cars in the parking lot. No people on the street.I got out of the car and walked toward the entrance. The driver stayed with his engine running. I looked back and waved at him. He waved back but did not leave. The front door of the arcade was unlocked. I pushed it open and walked inside. The place was empty. The machines were dark. The lights were off except for a few emergency lamps in the corners. I could see silhouettes of guards standing near the exits. They were not moving. They were just watching."Miss Hale."I turned. Vincent was standing near the entrance to a hallway. His face was in shadow. But I could see his shoulders. He was tense."Vincent." I walked toward him. "What is going on? Why is the arcade empty?""Mariano wanted privacy." He gestured toward the hallway. "He is in the center. Foll

Gabriella's POVMy mother's hand shot out and grabbed my wrist before I could take another step. Her grip was surprisingly strong for a woman her age. She pulled me back toward the window and I stumbled against the wall."Get back inside right now," she said. Her voice was low but sharp."Mom, I need to go.""You need to go where exactly?" She pulled me through the window and I landed back on my bedroom floor with a thud. She closed the window behind me and locked it. "It is almost midnight. You are dressed like you are going to a party. And you were climbing out of a window like a teenager sneaking out to see a boy.""I am not a teenager anymore.""Then stop acting like one." She crossed her arms and stood in front of the window like she was guarding it. "Who are you meeting?""A friend."My mother's eyebrows went up. "A friend. Gabriella, you do not have any friends right now. Davis made sure of that. He called every single person you used to spend time with and told them to stay aw

Gabriella's POV Raphael was quiet again. "Good. That is good. Keep working for him. Stay close to him. But be careful, Gabriella. He is a powerful man. And powerful men have secrets that even they do not understand.""What is that supposed to mean?""It means I have a weird feeling about him. A feeling I cannot explain. Just promise me you will be careful.""I promise.""Good. I love you, Gabriella. I will call you tomorrow.""I love you too, Raphael."He hung up.I stood in the hallway with my phone in my hand and stared at the wall. Something was wrong with Raphael. Something was wrong with Melissa. He had tried to hide it, but I knew him too well. I knew when he was lying. And he had been lying about her.I walked back into the dining room. My father was still at the table. My mother was coming in with a tray of tea."Raphael says hello," I said. "He misses you both."My mother smiled. "Tell him we miss him too. And tell him to bring Melissa home soon. I have not seen her in month

Gabriella's POVThe call connected on the third ring. I was still standing in the middle of the dining room with my hand throbbing and my heart racing. The house was quiet behind me. My mother had gone to the kitchen to make tea. My father was still sitting at the table with his head in his hands."Gabriella?" His voice came through the speaker. Warm but distracted. The way he always sounded when he had too many things on his mind. "Is everything okay? You never call this late.""Raphael." I said his name and something in my chest loosened. Just a little. "I need to talk to you. It is important.""What happened? Is Dad okay?""Dad is fine. He is sitting right here. He is recovering. But that is not why I called." I walked out of the dining room and into the hallway where no one could hear me. "I need to tell you about everything that has been happening here."Raphael was quiet for a moment. "Everything? Like what exactly?"So I told him. Everything. Vegas. The engagement. The way Davi

Gabriella's POVI did not sleep well. The house was too quiet after the footsteps stopped outside my door. Gabriella POV "No." "If she is here to watch me—" "Then let her watch." He walked back across the room to me. He stopped close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from his body. It was a comforting contrast to the cold feeling Lucia had left behind. "You are not doing anything wrong, Gab

Gabriella POV "Andrew was wrong." Lucia smiled. It was a slow, deliberate expression that did not reach her eyes. Gabriella's POVMy phone rang at seven thirty in the evening. I was still at my desk because the cycle four report had a section that did not make sense and Mariano had gone downstairs to deal with something in the security office. The executive floor was quiet. Mrs. Ava had left an hour ago. The l
