EMILY’S POV.

I took a step back, but he covered the distance between us in mere seconds. He towered over me, and I tried to push him away, but he held my arm strongly.

“I want us to talk in my room.” He said, and I jerked my arm out of his, hard.

“Why can’t we talk here? Is there anyone stopping you? Why does a secretary have to go into your bedroom to talk?” I shot at him, and his eyes continued to have that dangerous glint in them.

Then he successfully backed me into the wall. He moved so fast that I couldn’t even think. All I did was reverse, trying to get out of his way, and I hit the wall hard. I gave a little pained gasp, and my hand went to the back of my head.

“Why do we have to go into my room to talk? Do you have any cause to question me?” He asked, giving me a condescending look.

“You’re despicable, John. What are you implying?” I asked, trying to push him away, but he only came closer, suffocating me.

“That I want you. Do you want to do it here, or in my room?”

106EMILY’S POV.When John kissed me, it had been a really weird feeling. Even if I had long forgotten what it felt like to be kissed by him, my lips remembered—the shape of his lips. The tenderness, the gentleness.I couldn’t help having flashes of the numerous times we kissed. The people seemed quite interested in watching us kiss, and just when I began to get frustrated of the kiss, and the unexpected rising feelings; Lucas floated into my mind.We had kissed that night when we first met, and it had been full of sparks. Again we had kissed in front of the water, on Sadie’s school trip. Both times had been something beautiful.Kissing Lucas had butterflies roaming in my belly, and it was funny that I was thinking of kissing him, while being kissed by John. John released me, and I discovered I was smiling. He sat, and chuckled, pleased with himself. I looked at him, then glanced at the people, who had smiles on their faces, as they turned back to what they were doing.“You’re so comp

105LUCAS’ POV.I walked to it, and picked the first one up. It was one of Derel going to school. Derella had been cropped out because the only part of her which I could see was her wrist. The wrist that carried her treasured bracelet.I checked more of the photos, and they all had Derel in them. Some were the ones he had taken himself, or had taken with the help of professional photographers. While the majority were photos of him unaware. It seemed to me that they had been watching, and taking pictures of him unawares.“What are these?” I asked, holding up the photos. Mina bit her lip, looking busted. So Tenor had actually been right? I dropped the photos on the desk, and saw a few envelopes.I picked those up too, and opened a few of them.*Your smile is as radiant as the sun, Derel. Very soon, I’ll gather the courage to come to you.*In the same envelope was a photo of Derel smiling brightly.*Seeing you today, playing basketball was too much for my heart. Each time you threw the b

104EMILY’S POV.I stared at the roses in shock. How could he do something like that to me? In front of everyone! We weren’t even dating, not to talk of being engaged. Why would he give me flowers? We had agreed not to tell the public about our breakup, but we didn’t say we’d lead them on to keep on thinking we were couples. After the applause, people began to whisper.“So romantic.”“Jeez, she must be feeling really lucky.”“I wish I were her.”“Oh my God.”“Perfect. She has the perfect life.”“Has anyone ever given me a letter, not to talk of a rose.”“He’s so romantic, and handsome. He’s everything.”“I bet she’s trying hard not to blush.”“Damn, they look good together.”“If I were in her shoes, I’d kiss him right there…”Right and left, the whispers grew, and John’s perfect smile stayed still on his face. Where did he manage to get the roses? They didn’t seem artificial. I didn’t think flowers would still be that gorgeous with winter covering everything in white. But then, even i

103LUCAS’ POV.She took in deep breaths, after spitting out the words she looked like she regretted saying.Seeing that I was no longer fighting to get her off me, she let go of my leg slowly, and remained on her knees, with lowered lashes.“Someone is planning to bring my family down through Derel.” I said, wanting her to confirm or repeat what she had said.“I… I wasn’t going to involve myself in it, or wrap myself up in all that mess, but maybe I have to. I really want to stay in the company.” She said, still staring at the floor.I bent and looked at her.“Look at me.” I said, and she raised her wet lashes. In her terrified, yet desperate eyes, I saw the sincerity.“Follow me.” I said, getting up. I took my winter coat off the hanger, and put it on. She seemed unsure whether or not to follow me, but she followed either way. As I walked past employees, I began to wonder how many of them were actually haters of the Grangers.Only when we were safely seated in the café did I feel co

102EMILY’S POV.“What’s wrong? You can’t concentrate?” My temporary partner asked, when she saw me rubbing my forehead continuously. “Or you have an headache?” She asked, placing a hand over my forehead.“No. It’s fine.” I replied, with a smile, and she withdrew her hand. I went back to sorting out documents, and tried to concentrate. What on earth did John mean by a three-day trip? Just the two of us?My God, that will be uncomfortable, and hellish. What would we do when we were alone? Listening to him talk alone was suffocating.“This won’t do.” I muttered, getting to my feet. I hurried over to the restroom, and pulled out my phone, after ensuring no one was in there.“Dahlia?” I called, when she picked the call.“Emily. I’ve been meaning to call after the pictures of you and Lucas blew over the internet. I have just been really busy.” She said, and I gave a little smile. Calling her didn’t feel enough anymore. I missed seeing her.“I really want to see you. Talking to you puts me

101LUCAS’ POV.“This tastes good.” Derel said, savoring his latte.“Don’t try to change the topic, Derel. I brought you here to this fancy café, so you can feel comfortable and talk to me.” I said, spooning cake into my mouth.“Well, it’s not much. We just dated briefly.”“When was that?” I asked, leaning backwards.“Maybe a year ago?”“So? How did you meet her?”“She was in her senior year back then, about to graduate. So we dated briefly.”“Anything sketchy about her?”“Sketchy?”“Does she take drugs, do things that students shouldn’t?”“No.”“Then, what’s the red flag about her?”“Why are you so interested in her?”“Because I get a bad feeling whenever I see my influencers, but I can’t pick out who is giving off the evil vibe.”“Well, she was possessive, toxic, and sometimes, she tried to hit me. I don’t know if she was a druggie, but she drank and smoked a lot.” He said, and I raised a brow.“Did your sense of reason not have a role to play in you not dating such a girl?”“Well,

100JOHN’S POV.The sun shone into my room, lighting the whole place, and I turned on my bed, giving a loud yawn. Ever since the plan sweet Darcy had given me, I had been a little optimistic, and giddy towards the outcome.A knock.“Come in.” I said, and Katie walked in.“I’m here.” She said. I had called for her early in the morning, but didn’t know she’d come quickly.“What time did I call you?”“Around seven-thirty.”“Oh, it’s some minutes after eight.” I said, looking at the clock. “Well, let’s leave that aside. I want you to search for beach houses near Olive High School. The prices, and how much it would cost for like three days.” I said, leaning against the headboard.“Right now?” She asked, and I nodded.“Take your seat. I want the report now.”She looked around briefly, before settling into a sofa, and began to tap away at her phone. I watched her.She had changed a lot. Was it wanting to be more for Lucas that changed her, or the arrival of competition? She never opposed me

99EMILY’S POV.I stared at her, speechlessly, watching how she tried to regulate herself, and keep her anger in check.Six years? She loved him for six years?“I shouldn’t ruin your love of six years? How come your six-year love only amounts to this? How come nothing came out of it? Do you think all the women in the world will wait twenty years for you to keep chasing him? Whether or not I like Lucas, it’s none of your concern because he’s not yours, so you have no right to scream at me like this. I never stopped you from talking to him, did I?”“John is enough for you.”“I don’t need John.”“You don’t even know if you like Lucas or not, so butt out. I know clearly that I like him. If you’re not planning on being real, or clear with your feelings, and where you stand, then simply butt out. Dress up in something warm. We’re going to the company.” She said harshly, and turned back the way she came, slamming the door. There was enough cold inside, why did they want me going out? In a fe

98JOHN’S POV.(The previous evening)I poured myself fruit wine after finishing my work for the day. It had been so long since I finished my daily work. Most of the time, I carried over work to the next day, so the wine was more of a celebration thing.“Didn’t know wine still tastes good in an office setting.” I murmured to myself, and looked out the window. “It’s snowing.”‘It’s snowing, John! Aliens!’ I heard Emily scream in my head. Her giggles followed. ‘I know they’re not aliens. What do I say? Childhood stories stick!’That was our first Christmas together. The snow had come really late, making everyone wonder if it was ever going to snow that Christmas. Alas, it had.“We didn’t imagine a Christmas without her, John.” I said, swirling my drink in my glass.Just then, my door was pushed open.“Gosh.” I exclaimed, softly, as I was caught off guard.Katie stormed in, and stood in front of me.“Sweet to drink wine alone on a snowy night when your woman is out there having coffee, a
