Everyone was already at my mom’s house. Everyone except Keegan. I could hear Quinn and Alison talking about the wedding. I heard my dad telling silly jokes. The twins were laughing and talking with Baylen. I missed this chatter. This was going to be fine. It was dinner and my entire family was here. Keegan should be the least of my worries.

I made my way downstairs. I had my hair pinned to the side and a green, one-shoulder dress that clung tightly to my body. I had gotten so much more muscular since I started playing ball at The University Of Tennessee. I was finally comfortable in my skin.

“Hey Squirt,” Baylen said, running over and hugging me tightly.

“Okay Bay, I have grown rather fond of breathing, so could you loosen your death grip?” I teased, hugging him back.

“I missed you girl,” he said, holding my hands out and giving me a once over.

“ I know Bay. It’s too tight right?” I asked.

“No, it’s beautiful. You’re such a woman now and I’m just so proud of you. I literally brag about you at work all of the time,” Bay admitted.

“Aww, that means a lot Bay. Thank you,” I said, kissing his cheek.

His smile got huge, but he was looking over my head. What was he smiling at? I turned to see what had amused him and standing there right behind me was Keegan with a bottle of wine. He didn’t really even look at me. He came in for a hug with Baylen and then handed my mom the wine.

“Missy, I grabbed this for you,” he said, showing her the bottle.

“Oh, that’s my boy,” she said, cupping his face and snatching the bottle.

The wine was a spiced red that she had found when we went to an orchard in Indiana years ago. It’s been her favorite ever since. I loved seeing her happy.

Keegan did his rounds of hellos and I was nervously awaiting him to get to me. But he didn’t. He walked right past me and greeted Alison. It was like I was invisible. I was not sure how to feel about it. Was he avoiding me? It would make sense, but I was so used to him chasing me and trying to win me back that I had forgotten that wasn’t his only purpose in life. Keegan had moved on and that was what I wanted. Is that what I wanted? It felt like a dull knife had hit my heart. It didn’t hurt, but it definitely annoyed me.

During dinner we all had small talk amongst the table. Eventually my dad asked the question, “When is Tate coming?”

All eyes turned towards me. I nervously played with my fork. I looked around the room and addressed my dad.

“He will be here Thursday. He has to finish things up at his internship and then he is going to fly out that morning. I really can’t wait for you all to meet him. He is my guy. The one,” I gushed.

I glanced towards Keegan, but he seemed genuinely unphased. Not even a weird facial expression, nothing. That was a bit of a relief actually. I wasn’t sure if he still had feelings for me and I didn’t want it to be awkward.

“So why did you two break up?” My grandma, or Honey as we call her, suddenly chirped.

“I came to get my girl,” he said. The words fell off of his tongue like sweet honey. His girl. That had to be the sexiest thing he has ever said. “Your girl? When did I become your girl?” I asked, breathing heavy. He lifted my chin and rubbed his thumb on my lips.“You’ve always been my girl. Even when you were someone else’s. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” he said. He leaned in and I knew he was going to kiss me.“Kee,” I said, softly and with no will power left. “Can I please,” he begged, rubbing my lips once more. A magnetic energy pulled him towards me and I let down my guard. Our lips softly touched. “How does this work though?” I asked. “Well that’s what I came to tell you. I stay about three hours from here now,” he said.“Huh? How? Why?” I asked.“I was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Brees. I live here now,” he said. “Are you serious? Oh my gosh, Keegan! Congratulations!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around his neck.He lifted me onto the counter, so that

Three months had gone by since I had been home. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Keegan. He texted me and called me, but I never answered. To talk to him would mean I would have to tear the bandaid off of my heart and I wasn’t ready for that. I finished my junior year of college and I was preparing myself mentally to go home for the summer. Softball players stayed on campus for a month longer than other students, due to our schedules. Since Keegan was probably drafted already, he wouldn’t be at the house. I begged everyone not to tell me anything about him and I avoided social media and television. It gave me the perfect opportunity to get home and bond with the twins and my mom. Quinn and Baylen were moving into their house too, so I wanted to be there to support them. They were living closer to my dad though but it was only about a 20 minute drive. I also was eager to spend time with Wren and Casey. Since Casey had finally accepted Cyman’s proposal, I’m sure there was another wedding t

I sat up. “How can you say that? That was a goodbye kiss, and you know it. You going with her, knowing how she feels about you, isn’t something I can ignore. Am I supposed to wait while you play house with Haven?”I stood, stepping out of his reach.“Brees,” he pleaded, “I love you. Please come sit with me. I’m leaving in like ten minutes. I don’t want to spend our last moments together fighting. .”I shook my head. “I can’t be that girl anymore.”“Eight weeks,” he said. “We can survive eight weeks. I swear it’ll be worth it.”I wanted to believe him. My heart refused.“Let’s revisit this in eight weeks then. If you love me now, you will love me then,” I said.He reached for me again just as the door opened.“James?” Casey said. “You okay?”I nodded, then ran to her, burying my face in her shoulder.“Brees, please,” Keegan said behind me. “Not like this.”“Kee,” Casey cut in coldly, “I just saw Haven’s car down the street. She looked like she was freshening up for her boy toy. You sho

Casey was coming over to help me pack. Tomorrow, I’d be back in Tennessee. Today, Keegan was leaving with Haven.Nothing tasted right. Sounds I usually loved, the birds, the kids laughing outside, fell flat. Time moved without me, thick and slow, like I was watching my life through glass.Keegan had broken me again, and I didn’t know how to stitch myself back together. With both of us leaving, distance felt like the only mercy. I stayed out of the shared spaces, avoided the kitchen, the living room, anywhere I might run into him. I knew he’d want to explain. I didn’t have the strength to listen. I loved him, but what we shared the other night, made that door closed for good. I longed for him, but he had to live his life and I had to live mine. I told myself I was done. I’d moved on with Tate. We’d been good for almost a year. I hadn’t thought about Keegan at all. But the second I saw him, everything came rushing back: love, want, muscle memory. And sleeping with him again, made it im

She was being very weird this morning. “How did you sleep Keegan?” She asked.“Fine mom. The guest room bed is way more comfortable than the one in my apartment,” he said, grabbing the creamer from the fridge. “How would you know? You didn’t sleep in it,” she said, looking at him over her glass. We both turned to look at her. I’m sure my jaw was on the ground. “Mom, don’t start this. Not this morning,” he pleaded. “I didn’t say anything. I just want you to stay focused with so much at hand this year. I don’t want you to fall back into whatever this is again,” she said. Did she think I was a risk to his career? It sure seemed like that’s what she was saying. I’ve always felt like she never wanted me and Keegan to be together. It always sat quietly in the back of my mind.“Mom, what I do with Brees is my business. Her and I have a lot to figure out, without you meddling,” he said.“Just looking out for you. I mean look at Casey. Is that how you want to end up? With a kid while you

We lay together all night. He rubbed my back as I lay on his chest. I hadn’t even put my clothes back on yet. I was soaking in the moment. I couldn’t believe after four years I was back in his arms. The sun was coming up and I knew our parents would be up soon.“Kee,” I whispered, kissing his chin, “We gotta get up.”He opened his eyes slightly and looked at me. His face lit up as he realized what had happened was real. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. “Just lie here with me a little while longer. I’ve never spent the night with you,” he said.I obliged. I wasn’t in a hurry to let him go either. We didn’t speak. We just held each other. There was a deafening silence that I couldn’t help but notice. What did last night mean for us? Would we try to make a relationship work? What about Haven and his brand deals? There were so many questions, but I pushed them all away so I could enjoy this moment. So,” he says, “Last night.”I let out a short breath that’s
