Casey was coming over to help me pack. Tomorrow, I’d be back in Tennessee. Today, Keegan was leaving with Haven.

Nothing tasted right. Sounds I usually loved, the birds, the kids laughing outside, fell flat. Time moved without me, thick and slow, like I was watching my life through glass.

Keegan had broken me again, and I didn’t know how to stitch myself back together. With both of us leaving, distance felt like the only mercy. I stayed out of the shared spaces, avoided the kitchen, the living room, anywhere I might run into him. I knew he’d want to explain. I didn’t have the strength to listen. I loved him, but what we shared the other night, made that door closed for good. I longed for him, but he had to live his life and I had to live mine.

I told myself I was done. I’d moved on with Tate. We’d been good for almost a year. I hadn’t thought about Keegan at all. But the second I saw him, everything came rushing back: love, want, muscle memory. And sleeping with him again, made it impossible to pretend otherwise. I loved him. And he was leaving with another woman.

Was I really this stupid, or did it just feel that way?

I rolled my shirts tight and lined them neatly in my suitcase. Toiletries tomorrow, I reminded myself, setting the bag aside. I was sorting socks when a knock sounded at my door.

“Come in!” I called over my music.

My playlist was tragic on purpose. I was singing along like it might bleed some of the hurt out of me.

“This is a good song,” a man’s voice said.

I turned. Keegan stood there, closing my door behind him.

“Oh,” I said. “I was expecting… never mind. What do you want?”

He sat on my bed, nudging my suitcase aside, fingers absently spinning one of the wheels.

“Brees, you’ve been avoiding me since my mom said that stuff in the kitchen. Are we okay? How are you feeling about me leaving?”

I stared at him. Are we okay? How did I feel about him moving across the country with another woman?

I feel fucking fantastic. I threw away a relationship that I was content with. I mean, I was happy enough. I could have possibly been very happy with Tate. But instead here I sit, staring at the man I love, whom I also can’t have.

“Don’t do this,” I said, turning back to my packing. “You’re leaving. I’m leaving. Let’s just leave it at that. I’m not invested in this right now, and it’s better that way.”

I didn’t look at him. I couldn’t.

“Brees,” he said softly. “Stop for a second.”

His hand closed around my arm.

I looked down at his fingers, then up at his face. “Let go, Keegan. I’m not doing this with you.”

I tried to avoid his stare because I felt the tears sitting at the edge of my lashes. The tears came anyway. They were hot, relentless. He tried to hug me. I pushed him away but he pulled me back towards him by my wrist. He grabbed me by my waist and embraced me. I resisted until my body betrayed me and collapsed into his. He sat in my large armchair and pulled me onto his lap, holding me while I cried.

“Baby,” he murmured, “please don’t cry. You know I hate seeing you like this.”

I pulled back, wiped my face. “Then why do you keep being the reason I do?”

He cupped my face. “This isn’t me choosing something else over you. I’m doing this so I can build a life—with you. Don’t you want that?”

Of course I did. I always had. Since I was nine, pretending to marry him in the clubhouse my dad built. Keegan had always been the dream—loving him, being loved back. But him being with Haven felt like she was stealing that dream right out from under me.

“I want you,” I said. “I want to sit in your lap and be your girlfriend. I want to come to your games, wear your jersey, be proud of you. But how am I supposed to do that like this?”

“Let me be clear,” he said. “This isn’t me choosing her. It’s me choosing me. I need to do this.”

“Then why does it feel like you’re choosing her?” I asked. “Why does it hurt this badly? I thought I was over you. One night, and I’m back in your web. How does that even happen?”

He shook his head. “This,” he gestured between us, “has nothing to do with her. She isn’t you.”

His hand slid into my hair, pulling me closer. “Brees, I’m going to kiss you. Please stop me if you don’t want me to.”

“Please, Kee,” I breathed.

I knew the consequences that this kiss would bring. I knew I should pull away and tell him no.

I didn’t stop him.

The kiss was slow, heavy. I tasted love and fear and everything unfinished. It wasn’t a new beginning. It was a goodbye. The kind you feel in your bones. Each soft press of his mouth felt like closure we never meant to have. I didn’t want it to end because I knew it might be the last time.

When we finally pulled apart, our foreheads rested together, his heart racing beneath my palm.

“This isn’t over,” he said.

“What isn’t?” I asked, eyes still closed.

“Us.”

“I came to get my girl,” he said. The words fell off of his tongue like sweet honey. His girl. That had to be the sexiest thing he has ever said. “Your girl? When did I become your girl?” I asked, breathing heavy. He lifted my chin and rubbed his thumb on my lips.“You’ve always been my girl. Even when you were someone else’s. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” he said. He leaned in and I knew he was going to kiss me.“Kee,” I said, softly and with no will power left. “Can I please,” he begged, rubbing my lips once more. A magnetic energy pulled him towards me and I let down my guard. Our lips softly touched. “How does this work though?” I asked. “Well that’s what I came to tell you. I stay about three hours from here now,” he said.“Huh? How? Why?” I asked.“I was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Brees. I live here now,” he said. “Are you serious? Oh my gosh, Keegan! Congratulations!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around his neck.He lifted me onto the counter, so that

Three months had gone by since I had been home. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Keegan. He texted me and called me, but I never answered. To talk to him would mean I would have to tear the bandaid off of my heart and I wasn’t ready for that. I finished my junior year of college and I was preparing myself mentally to go home for the summer. Softball players stayed on campus for a month longer than other students, due to our schedules. Since Keegan was probably drafted already, he wouldn’t be at the house. I begged everyone not to tell me anything about him and I avoided social media and television. It gave me the perfect opportunity to get home and bond with the twins and my mom. Quinn and Baylen were moving into their house too, so I wanted to be there to support them. They were living closer to my dad though but it was only about a 20 minute drive. I also was eager to spend time with Wren and Casey. Since Casey had finally accepted Cyman’s proposal, I’m sure there was another wedding t

I sat up. “How can you say that? That was a goodbye kiss, and you know it. You going with her, knowing how she feels about you, isn’t something I can ignore. Am I supposed to wait while you play house with Haven?”I stood, stepping out of his reach.“Brees,” he pleaded, “I love you. Please come sit with me. I’m leaving in like ten minutes. I don’t want to spend our last moments together fighting. .”I shook my head. “I can’t be that girl anymore.”“Eight weeks,” he said. “We can survive eight weeks. I swear it’ll be worth it.”I wanted to believe him. My heart refused.“Let’s revisit this in eight weeks then. If you love me now, you will love me then,” I said.He reached for me again just as the door opened.“James?” Casey said. “You okay?”I nodded, then ran to her, burying my face in her shoulder.“Brees, please,” Keegan said behind me. “Not like this.”“Kee,” Casey cut in coldly, “I just saw Haven’s car down the street. She looked like she was freshening up for her boy toy. You sho

She was being very weird this morning. “How did you sleep Keegan?” She asked.“Fine mom. The guest room bed is way more comfortable than the one in my apartment,” he said, grabbing the creamer from the fridge. “How would you know? You didn’t sleep in it,” she said, looking at him over her glass. We both turned to look at her. I’m sure my jaw was on the ground. “Mom, don’t start this. Not this morning,” he pleaded. “I didn’t say anything. I just want you to stay focused with so much at hand this year. I don’t want you to fall back into whatever this is again,” she said. Did she think I was a risk to his career? It sure seemed like that’s what she was saying. I’ve always felt like she never wanted me and Keegan to be together. It always sat quietly in the back of my mind.“Mom, what I do with Brees is my business. Her and I have a lot to figure out, without you meddling,” he said.“Just looking out for you. I mean look at Casey. Is that how you want to end up? With a kid while you

We lay together all night. He rubbed my back as I lay on his chest. I hadn’t even put my clothes back on yet. I was soaking in the moment. I couldn’t believe after four years I was back in his arms. The sun was coming up and I knew our parents would be up soon.“Kee,” I whispered, kissing his chin, “We gotta get up.”He opened his eyes slightly and looked at me. His face lit up as he realized what had happened was real. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. “Just lie here with me a little while longer. I’ve never spent the night with you,” he said.I obliged. I wasn’t in a hurry to let him go either. We didn’t speak. We just held each other. There was a deafening silence that I couldn’t help but notice. What did last night mean for us? Would we try to make a relationship work? What about Haven and his brand deals? There were so many questions, but I pushed them all away so I could enjoy this moment. So,” he says, “Last night.”I let out a short breath that’s
