Chapter 1

A month had passed since I was imprisoned and stripped of my voice. Finally, my wife, Kayla Jebb, sent word.

"Go see if that jinx has learned his lesson."

Knowing Kayla was coming back, the maids yanked me out of the cage, unlocked the rusty chains securing my wrists and ankles, and threw me into scalding water to scrub me clean.

The water was so hot that I could barely breathe, yet the maids were shaking with laughter.

"Mr. Reed, we've gone to so much trouble to teach you some discipline these past few days. It hasn't been easy."

"When Ms. Jebb gets home, you know what to do, right?"

I lay sprawled on the floor and nodded numbly, only to be met with another round of mocking laughter.

I was the only son of the Reed family in Jolville. Back then, I controlled the entire economy across Southern Jolville, and none of these maids would have dared treat me this way.

But now, I had nothing left. I was completely at their mercy.

"That's what I'm talking about. As long as you do as we say, we'll be good to you."

A maid dragged me out of the pool and dumped me onto the uneven gravel. The moment my knees hit the ground, I cried out in pain, only to be slapped in the face.

"What are you shouting for? Are you acting all helpless now that you know Ms. Jebb's coming back soon? What? Are you planning to tell on us?"

Trembling, I shook my head as I gritted my teeth against the searing pain.

The maids had drugged me, and I hadn't been able to speak ever since. Even if I could tell Kayla what they had done, she would never stand up for me. Thus, I had no choice but to endure it in silence.

After that, the maids helped me into a clean suit and took me to the villa entrance to wait for Kayla. Some time later, a Rolls-Royce pulled up.

It had been months since I had last seen Kayla. She stepped out first, dressed in a sharp business suit.

Moments later, a man in a tailored suit came out from the other side. It was her childhood sweetheart, Sebastian Miller.

The two of them walked toward me hand in hand, looking like the perfect couple.

Consumed by hatred, I trembled, but I could only grit my teeth and force it down.

I had loved Kayla for ten years and done whatever she asked of me. I even gave her my entire fortune—worth over 100 billion dollars—when she asked for it.

I could see how much time people had left to live, and when I warned her that Sebastian had less than three months, she called me a jinx.

Not only did Kayla knock my teeth out herself, but she also sent me to a remote villa and had the maids teach me a lesson.

Every day, those maids tortured me for sport. They used metal chains to restrain me and forced me to eat dog kibble. They even poured hot water over my head and ripped out my fingernails.

The more I suffered, the more unhinged they became. I tried fighting back, only to suffer an even more brutal beating.

I had once imagined Kayla would come back to rescue me, but all I got was despair and betrayal. Even so, I never once thought of taking my own life.

As long as what I told Kayla came true, she would let me go. And once I was free, I could make them pay for everything I had been through.

But I never expected Kayla to come back with Sebastian. He was supposed to be dead, yet somehow, he was still alive.

As Kayla approached, she merely gave me a sideways glance before walking right past me. She and Sebastian entered the villa, walking so close they were practically touching.

I schooled my expression and followed them, limping all the way.

Once we were back in the living room, Kayla and Sebastian sat on the couch and looked down at me as if I were beneath them.

She looked at me, her brows furrowing slightly as she said coldly, "Isaac Reed, back then, you told me Sebastian had less than three months to live. What do you have to say for yourself now?"

A chill ran through me.

It was true. Back then, I had seen a three-month countdown above Sebastian's head and told her about it.

In fact, I had never gotten anyone else's countdown wrong.

At the same time, Kayla had her sights set on me again. She took the initiative to text me an apology and even asked me out to dinner. As we ate, she made a point of trying to win me over again.I had spent ten years chasing after Kayla, and this was the first time she had given me her attention. Still, I didn't turn her down and allowed her to keep trying to win me over. Ashley thought I had fallen for Kayla's charms again, so we had a big fight. Right now, she was giving me the cold shoulder. Of course, I wasn't about to fall into the same trap twice. As I continued seeing Kayla, I got plenty of her family's secrets out of her. Kayla thought her charms had finally worked, so she started pestering me to remarry her. "I didn't know what was going on at the villa back then."It was Sebastian who hired those maids. I was so heartbroken when I found out what actually happened. You're the only person I've ever loved. You saved my life, remember?"Let's remarry. I promise I don't

Owen and Anna had worked so hard to get their hands on my assets, and now they were being asked to give them back. That had to hurt. But in the end, it came down to Kayla or their money. They would have to decide which mattered more. The longer they dragged it out, the more pain she would be in. Finally, two days later, Kayla took the initiative to call me. "I'll give you what you want. Come save me now… I can't stand this anymore."Even over the phone, I could tell she was struggling to speak, but I asked calmly, "And this is how you ask me for help?""What do you mean?" Kayla asked, clearly in pain. "Come see me, and bring me what I asked for." I ended the call immediately after.I had already found someone who could save Kayla, and he had only agreed to help me because of Kenneth. The man also warned me that changing someone's fate would come at a cost to him.As I had expected, an hour later, Owen and Anna brought Kayla to see me.Sitting in the wheelchair, Kayla was noth

Something suddenly occurred to Kayla, and her eyes widened. But she quickly denied it, clenching her fists as she stared at me with bloodshot eyes. "Sebastian would never do that to me. Never! Only you, Isaac. You're the only one who wants me dead."I leaned back comfortably in the chair next to her bed. "You can ask your family to look into it. Check if Sebastian secretly met with someone at Cloud Mountain a month ago. "And after that, you slept with him, didn't you? As time went by, you started feeling weaker and weaker…"For the first time, Kayla didn't argue with me. I left it at that. I decided to let her figure out the rest on her own.The easiest way for Sebastian to change his fate was to sleep with someone else. If Kayla had cared about me even a little and refused to sleep with him, she might not have ended up like this.Perhaps she had brought this on herself after all. After leaving the hospital, I had someone gather evidence that I had been abused at the villa a

Kenneth comforted me, "Don't worry, Isaac. I'm sure you'll make a full recovery. My granddaughter's a doctor. She can help you regain your voice within half a month."Ashley smiled and flashed me an OK sign. She even handed me a pen and some paper and said kindly, "If you have something to say, you can write it down here."With a nod, I wrote, "Thank you, but Kayla's dying. She only has one day left to live. I need you to help me look into Sebastian Miller."Kenneth asked me a few more questions, and I answered them all. That was when I found out that he was just like me. He could see the countdown to someone's death too. Kenneth even told me that a person's fate could be changed. It seemed Sebastian had found a way to change his. Kenneth had Ashley send someone to look into it and consult with experts in the field. As expected, they found out that Sebastian had used black magic to transfer his fate to Kayla.Emotion surged through me. So I was right. I wondered how Kayla wou

At that moment, everyone in the room panicked and hurried over to check on Kayla. But as the pool of blood beneath her grew larger, no one dared make a move.Sebastian was the one who remained calm. He ordered a few maids to carry Kayla downstairs and had another call an ambulance. Everyone was in a panic. After Kayla took over my family's fortune, she became one of the most powerful people in Jolville. She was an only child too. If anything happened to her, none of them would get off scot-free.As the ambulance sirens drew closer, everyone grew more frantic. A few carried Kayla out of the room, some went to open the door, and others went to meet the paramedics. No one noticed that I had slipped into the grotto in the garden and crawled out of a small opening.I had kept that as my final escape route, and I didn't dare use it unless I had to.If I failed to make my escape, the maids would capture me again and beat me even worse. Aside from that, they would tighten security arou

Memories of being tortured came flooding back. I instinctively dug my fingers into my palms, but I lowered my gaze and said nothing.Sebastian burst into laughter, came up behind me, and gave my head a hard smack. "I bet you didn't know this, but while they were torturing you, I was sleeping with your wife. That felt really good, you know. "I heard you haven't even slept with her. That makes sense. Kayla's never thought much of you. Why would she even let you touch her?"Sebastian let out a long sigh. "I'm just being honest. As a man, you're a complete failure. Isaac, I want you to prove that you've truly submitted to us."Drink this herbal medicine. It'll make sure you can never have children. Even though you probably can't get it up anymore, I think we should stay on the safe side, don't you think?"Sebastian picked up the bowl and brought it to my lips. I managed to suppress my fury, keeping my expression blank. Still, I refused to open my mouth. He let out a scoff and pre
