Chapter 24

Estelle

✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦

I woke up screaming.

It wasn’t the gentle scream of waking where consciousness slowly creeps in. It was a violent, jarring scream. Like something had grabbed me by the throat and yanked me out of a nightmare so vivid I could still feel the hands on me.

I was gasping, heart hammering so hard I thought it might break through my ribs, tangled in sheets that felt unfamiliar—too soft, too expensive, definitely not the threadbare cotton I’d fallen asleep in.

Wait.

I wasn’t in the guest room.

I was in—

Where was I?

The room swam into focus gradually. High ceilings. Floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout curtains. A bonsai tee by the window, a bed that looked like it could take up the entire space in my room back home. And sitting in a chair beside the bed, watching me with cloudy grey eyes—

Kegan.

“It’s okay,” he said quietly. “You’re safe. It was just a dream.”

“Where am I?”

“You’re in my room. In Italy. At my house.”

Italy. Right. Italy. The beach. The mafia.

Chapter 84 Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦Eighty-five minutes.I stood at the window of the airfield’s private lounge, watching the jet being prepped on the tarmac. The pilots were running through their checks. The crew was loading luggage. Everything was ready.Everything except the one person I’d hoped would be standing beside me.My phone sat heavy in my pocket. Silent. No calls. No texts. No last-minute change of heart. She wasn’t coming.I’d known it the moment I walked out of that bedroom. Had seen it in her eyes; the fear, the doubt, the fundamental unwillingness to trust that I could love her without consuming her.Maybe I couldn’t. Maybe she was right about me.Dylan appeared at my elbow, two cups of coffee in his hands. He offered me one without a word.“Thanks,” I muttered, taking it even though I knew it would taste like ash.“She’s not coming,” he said, not even bothering to phrase it as a question.“No.”“You want to wait?”I looked at my watch. Seventy-nine minutes since I’d walked

Chapter 83Estelle✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦“Is that really so bad?” He turned to face me. “Is having a life with me, being part of my family, building something real together—is that really worse than going back to your library job and your shitty apartment and barely scraping by?”My jaw dropped. “You think this is about money? About wanting to be rich and comfortable?”“Isn’t it? You’ve been living in luxury for months now. Designer clothes, expensive dinners, a job that pays more than you’d make in a year at that library. Are you really going to tell me you want to go back to that?”“If it means I get to make my own choices? Yes!” I was crying harder now, angry tears that I couldn’t stop. “I’d rather be poor and free than rich and trapped!”“You’re not trapped.”“Yes, I am! You’re literally telling me I have to go to Sicily, that I don’t have a choice, that my opinion doesn’t matter because you’ve decided what’s best for me!” My voice was rising to a shout again. “That’s the definition of trapp

Chapter 82Estelle✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦I followed him inside, my feet moving before my brain could catch up.The penthouse was crowded with Kegan’s moving through hallways with weapons and phones, low urgent voices discussing things I couldn’t quite hear. But I didn’t care about any of that. I just kept following Kegan as he climbed the stairs, his shoulders rigid, blood still seeping through his jacket. He went straight to his bedroom where there was a first aid kit already laid out on the bed, like someone had anticipated this.Kegan shrugged off his jacket with a wince, then started unbuttoning his shirt.“Let me help—”“I’ve got it.”“Kegan, you’re bleeding—”“I said I’ve got it.” His voice was flat, emotionless, like I wasn’t even there.I watched him struggle with the buttons, his fingers clumsy from pain and exhaustion. The shirt finally came off, revealing the angry red graze across his shoulder. It wasn’t as bad as I’d feared, but it still looked painful as hell.He moved to the bat

Chapter 81Estelle✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦The only sound in the car was the occasional whimper from Lily and the labored breathing of Marco as he fought to stay conscious.I sat in the front passenger seat, blood drying on my hands, my dress, probably in my hair. The adrenaline was wearing off, leaving behind a bone-deep exhaustion that made everything feel distant and dreamlike.James Ashford was dead.I’d killed two men.Marco had been shot trying to save me.And somehow, impossibly, we were all still breathing.Behind me, Carrie sat stiffly, her face a mask of shock and grief. Thomas had his arm around his mother, trying to be brave. Lily was crying quietly into my shoulder.“Where are you taking us?” Carrie finally spoke, her voice hoarse.Kegan didn’t answer. His jaw was set, hands tight on the wheel, eyes fixed on the road ahead. Blood seeped through his jacket from the wound on his shoulder, but he hadn’t said a word about it.“Kegan,” I tried. “She asked you a question.”“She’s in no posi

Chapter 80 Kegan✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦My phone was clutched in my hand, James Ashford’s ultimatum still ringing in my ears.Ten minutes. Walk away from London or your girl dies.Making it to wherever the fuck he was in ten minutes was literally impossible. But that wasn’t the only call I’d received. Two minutes after James hung up, another voice. Distorted, filtered, mechanical.“Kegan Gaetano. So nice to finally speak directly.”“I was expecting more of a physical meeting,” I answered tersely. “But I suppose you’re too scared for that.” “Think that for now. But I also want what James wants. Your territory. Your connections. Your weapons network. Everything.”“Two people can’t have the same thing.”“Exactly. Which is why you’re at Gold Golf. Alone. As instructed. Because you’re about to make a choice, Mr. Gaetano. James Ashford gets nothing, and you give me everything. Or James kills your girl, and you lose everything anyway.”“You have a personal beef with the Ashfords, don’t you?” And then

Chapter 79Estelle✦༺⚜︎☠︎⚜︎༻✦“No, no, no, James. Please don’t shoot.” I was improvising, stalling, desperately trying to keep everyone alive until Kegan could do something. “We can figure something out, please.”“You think I’m stupid, don’t you?”“Look, I have a seventeen-year-old brother,” I sobbed. “My mother hasn’t reaped anything from raising us single-handedly yet. My friend Millie is in the hospital, and I haven’t visited her in weeks because of this stupid job. I only recently got a boyfriend and finally know what sex feels like—” I caught myself with my hand over my mouth.Oh my God. I’m scared and nervous. I’m blabbing.“Please,” I continued regardless. “I can’t die right now, James. Please.”“What the fuck?”The burner phone buzzed. A call this time. Private number.“Answer it,” James ordered. “Speaker.”I answered, my hand shaking so badly I nearly dropped it.“Estelle.” Not Kegan’s voice, but someone else. The voice was distorted, filtered through some kind of voice modul
