Maybe, just maybe

Present day.

The rustling sound of the leaves as a rabbit ran around jolted Valerie out of thought, it had gotten dark already and she’s been sitting out for what seem like hours, sighing, she stood up to get back home.

Her birthday was over already and she just wanted to be home and run to the comfort of her bed, she has school tomorrow.

“Oh, Shit!” Valerie said to herself as she remembered he essay she was supposed to turn in the next day, she made her way to her building and walked in to see Adira cleaning up, Adira has been with her through at all, her mentor and godmother she smiled as she walked closer to Adira who only snarled at her.

“Don’t touch me,” Adira said in anger. “You were supposed to be here today, it’s your birthday but what do we get. Nothing! The packs are disappointed.” Adira added as she took the plates off the table.

“Come on, Ad. You know how I get on my birthdays ever since mother died. I’m sorry.” Valerie apologized.

“Well, some of us gets really excited whenever you Birthday draw nearer, the packs were here and you just disappointed them by disappearing. It’s fine.” Adira said.

“It’s obviously not fine, I’ll make it up to you, I promise.” Valeria said, looking at Adira and searching for a reaction, sighing when she didn’t get any.

“Fine,” Adira said and Valerie shouted in excitement. “I’ll just let it slide this time,” she said, “like I usually do everytime.” She added in a whisper and Valerie laughed.

“I’ll be in my room, I have an essay to write and school tomorrow, goodnight Adira.” Valerie said as she walked up the stairs to her room.

Getting to her room, Valerie sunk into her bed in exhaustion, she pulled out some textbooks and notes from her book to start with her assignment when her phone rang, when she took a look at the caller ID, she got excited. It was Maeve, picking the phone up.

“Maeve!” She squealed in excitement. Maeve and Camden were the first friend she made when she first got into York University, they’d helped her find her way around the school as they were freshmen too, as days went by the trio became close and inseparable.

“Valerie. How are you?” Maeve squealed too.

“I’m fine, just you know, trying to get this essay done.” Valerie answered.

“Oh, I’m done with mine,” Maeve said with a sense of pride, “also, happy birthday girl. I’ve been trying to reach you and like last year, I couldn’t.” Maeve added and Valerie just knew she would be pouring as that was a usual habit for her.

“I’m sorry, you know how it goes.” Valerie answered apologetically.

“It’s fine.... Oh.” Maeve said.

“What’s up?” She asked.

“It’s Camden, he wants to join the call.” Maeve said.

“Well, let him join in.” Valerie said.

“Sometimes we might be discussing girl stuff and he’d just pop up wanting to join the conversation.” Maeve said and Valerie laughed as she said so.

“He’s our sistuhhh.” Valerie said and Maeve laughed as she approved Camden’s call.

“Girllllsss. Happy birthday Valerie but I am mad at you.” Camden said immediately his call got approved and Valerie laughed.

“I know and I’m sorry.” She apologized.

“Who amongst you smart asses have finished her essay?” Camden asked, he was never really serious with his academics. He never wanted to go to college, all Camden wanted to be was a photographer but his parents weren’t the most supportive and so he had to go to school.

“Ask Maeve, she’s the smartest.” Valerie answered.

“Yes, My kids,” Maeve said, “I’m done with it and not to worry, I will help you by sending it to our group chat n...ow and sent.” Maeve finished as her friends got the notification of her message.

“Thank you Maeve, you are a life saver.” Camden said with a sense of relief.

“See you all in school tomorrow right?” Maeve asked and Camden and Valerie gave their answer andthe call ended.

Writing her assignment, Valerie was done after a while, she doesn’t need to copy Maeve’s answer as she had a lot of knowledge about it, it was history and the question was quite simple. Getting done with her assignment, Valerie packed her things and prepared for school the next day.

Laying on her bed, Valerie soon fell asleep.

Watching her mother fight fearlessly, Valerie released herself and transformed into her full wolf form and helped her packs to fight against the humans.

“I didn’t know I would get to meet you this soon.” Alejandro said as he attempted to launch a blow in Clarissa’s direction as she swiftly moved away while catching him off guard.

From what Valerie was seeing and hearing, the human and her mother had history but looking at it now, it seem to be a bad one.

“I thought you would be dead by now but we never really don’t get what it is we wish for.” Clarissa said, knocking Alejandro out and placing all of her weight on him that he was unable to move.

“Your likes shouldn’t exist among real humans.” Alejandro spat at Clarissa.

“And your likes shouldn’t be alive.” Clarissa replied, unleashing as her eyes turned red, making eye contact with Alejandro she soon killed him without having to claw at him.

She froze for a while and before she could register what had happened, she looked down at herself to see that she’d been in contact with wolfsbane, her skin burning as she’d come in direct contact with it.

Valerie looked at her mother and over at the one who’d shot her, she bowled loudly as she charged towards him, giving him no more chance to reload, Valerie made sure she’d hit him heavily and the human hit one if the trees hard, she sprinted back to her mother in her human form as she proceeded to carry her mother.

“You shouldn’t touch me. It’s poisonous and you could die.” Clarissa said but Valerie didn’t listen, carrying her mother, Valerie howled loudly and the fight stopped, she got weak at the sight of her injured and almost dead mother, she couldn’t fight anymore. The Aletha pack knowing they lost, Adira ordered them to stop and just flee in search of safety. Valerie looked back at the human that had shot her mother and that face would forever be in her memory.

Lifting her mother, Valerie and Adira fled, leading the pack to safety. Sure that they’ve gotten far enough from the humans, Valerie roamed the forest in hopes of finding something to cure her mother as the rest of the pack watched helplessly, they knew there was no saving the queen and all of Valerie’s effort would prove futile, getting back with a lot of herbs, Clarissa pulled her down.

“I’m dying, Valerie. There’s nothing you can do about it.” Clarissa struggled to speak.

“No. No,” Valerie cried, “there’s got to be something we can do, some herbs, Adira!” Valerie said as she called Adira who only shook her head when Valerie turned.

“You are the next Suprema, Aletha Wolfpack is now your responsibility, for years now you’ve been wanting to serve, now is the time Valerie.” Clarissa said.

“Lead them to safety, be the kind of Suprema the goddess has ordained you to be.” Clarissa added as she pulled her ring from her finger and placed it on her daughters finger. “Be the Suprema.” She said as she drew her last breath and the Aletha pack howled in agony, mourning their queen. Valerie not fully processing what had just happened looked behind to see Adira shedding a tear, Adira would never cry unless it was really a tragedy. Has she lost her mother? Her mother couldn’t possibly be dead, Her mother was the only person she loved the most before anyone else.

“Adira?” she called in a light tone, “what is going on? Why isn’t mother moving?” She asked with her eyes red.

“She’s gone,” Adira answered, “you’re our queen now.” She finished and the rest of the pack bowed to her.

“No. No way,” Valerie said, “there’s no way mother could be dead, it’s my eighteenth birthday, she promised she’d be with me as I absorb the last bit of my powers, mother can’t be dead.” Valerie finished, still in denial of her mother’s death.

Adira kneeled close to her and pulled her close in a hug. Crying her hearts out.

“NO!” Valerie screamed in pain as she immediately opened her eyes. It was all a dream, everything about today reminded her of her mother and how she’d lost her on her eighteenth birthday, Valerie sat up for a while as she picked her phone up to check the time. “2:45AM.” She said to herself with a sigh.

“Princess,” Adira called as she rushed into Valerie’s chamber, “what is the matter? I heard you scream.” She added, worried.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to wake you.” Valerie apologized.

“It’s Okay, what is the matter?” Adira asked as she settled beside Valeria who was sweating and breathing heavily.

“It was just a dream,” Valerie started, “about how I’d lost mother.” She added and as usual, Adira pulled her closer, placing Valerie’s head on her shoulder.

“I don’t know if I’m doing a good job with the pack, if she was here, she’d still be queen and everyone would be rest assured for she was such a great leader, a wonderful queen and the best mother one could ever wish for.” Valerie sobbed.

“You’re doing a great job, for years you’ve been queen and not once are we dissatisfied about your reign, except your quest to bring humans and werewolves together. You’re doing great and she is proud of you, don’t beat yourself up too much about it.” Adira consoled.

“Thank you, Adira,” Valerie said, “also, I see great peace and unity with humans and werewolves, I see a world of love with both in it and I want to make it happen.” Valerie added.

“We’ll talk about that some other time, for now go to bed, you have classes tomorrow.” Adira said.

“Thank you, Adira.” Valerie let out slowly.

“Do you think I should’ve asked Kai for help?” She asked under her breath and hoped Adira would comfort her and tell her she did the right thing, “do you think if I asked, just maybe if I asked, mother would still be with us?”
