"Copeland, did you hear her? I know I heard her loud and clear. She's still a married woman, humph! I thought you told me she wanted this divorce! It doesn't seem that way. I felt so humiliated sitting there listening to her brag about her marriage to you and how she takes her vows seriously."
"Lizzy, I told you she was going to divorce me. If you had been willing to wait, you would have heard for yourself."
"I don't believe you! All she was going to do his flaunt her marriage to you in front of my face. I know how women can be Copeland! I don't want to talk anymore. Bye!"
Lizzy got out and slammed the car door!
"Man! Women!" Copeland frustratedly answered his ringing phone.
"Hello!" He answered firmly.
"Hey man, whatever women problems you have, don't take it out on me."
"Oh hey, Joel, What's up?"
"I should be asking you that. But, instead, do you want to talk about it over a drink while I prepare to open the nightclub?"
"I'll see you at King's shortly." Copeland pulled up to the nightclub. He wasn't in a good mood. Lizzy was upset with him, and now Tameka's here, and nothing is going the way he hoped it would for him.
"Hey Copeland, my man!" Joel says, throwing his arms around Copeland's shoulder.
"What's up, Joel."
"You baby, what do you want to drink? You can have anything. It's on the house."
"I'll take a white Russian."
"So tell me, man, is the divorce final?"
"What? I haven't even filled out the papers yet."
"Ah, C'mon! What's the hold-up now? You know I got plans for Tameka and me once you set my girl free."
Copeland took a swig of his drink. "Ooh, you put it away fast here, have another one."
"Look what you're doing! You done spilled it all over my Italian suit! Forget it! I'm done!"
"I'm sorry, man, it was a mistake! Don't go!"
"I got an early day at work. Later, man!"
Copeland storms out of the club while calling for his driver. At the same time, he was standing outside, waiting on his driver. Copeland could get over Joel talking about Tameka and him getting together. "How could he talk about my wife in front of my face that way!"
His car pulled up. "Take me home?"
"Which home, Sir? Do you want to go to Miss Hubbards, or do you want to go to your house?"
"Take me by Tameka!"
When Copeland walks through the door, he doesn't expect his mother, Olivia, and his grandmother Kate.
"Good evening, son."
"Good evening, mom and Gigi. What are you two doing here?"
"Well, word spreads fast. We heard that my lovely daughter-in-law was home and we just had to see her! Here take a seat next to Tameka's son." Copeland sits down next to me. I could tell he had been drinking.
"So, I know you two modern young people are into your careers, and that's good," Olivia says.
"But it's been three long years! Don't you two think it's time to have us some grandbabies? I'm not getting any younger, you know."
We both looked at one another and then back at Gigi and Olivia.
"Mom and Gigi! The girl hasn't been here a good 24 hours, and you two are planning for us to have a baby!"
"Tell him, Tameka. You want a baby too! So you can stop working so hard."I tried to smile it off. "Well, I don't know, Gigi."
"Are you listening, Copeland? Your wife wants a baby. She's just too shy to say it."
"My phone is ringing. Hello?" Copeland says, glad for the distraction.
"Hey, it's me, Lizzy. Can you come over?"
"Not right now. I have company right now. I'll call you later, okay? How are you feeling?"
"Not so good. Especially since I can't talk to you."
"I'll call you. I got to go."
"Who are you whispering on the phone with, son?"
"That was Lizzy."
"Lizzy Hubbard?" Gigi asked, looking puzzled.
"Why are you talking to Lizzy, Son? You are not cheating on your wife, are you?"
"Copeland, Tameka is a good girl. We didn't raise you to be a cheating slut!"
"Momma and Gigi, I…"
"Copeland, what is that on your tie and shirt? Gigi and Momma Olivia, can you excuse Copeland and me for a minute."
"Sure, Tameka, it's so good to have you home. Olivia, look how she takes care of our son." Gigi says.
Once upstairs in the primary bedroom together. Away from the firing squad of Copeland's grandmother and mother, he let out a sigh. She detected the heat from his body close to hers. He just stood there staring at her in the dimly lit bedroom. His gaze burned into her while a muscle barely tensed in his lean jaw. He stared at the curling mass of heavy black hair falling around the nape of her slender swanlike neck. Her long, flared cotton jersey dress moved softly on her curvy frame.
It was a soft coral color flattering the intense vibrancy of her skin tone. Tilting her chin, Tameka flashed a fake smile. The expression transformed her face, startling him with her soft natural beauty. Her hair, her crowning glory, was a luxurious raven black. It highlights the exotic cheekbones in her delicate face. Her large eyes, framed by long lashes, are the same shade as her hair.
"Don't you think you should change your shirt?"
"I know what you are doing?"
"What am I doing?" I asked.
"Thanks anyway." He turned and walked away, removing the old stained shirt and changing it into a new one. Tameka turned and looked away. Once again, she felt her heart flutter. Once he was finished changing into a clean, fresh shirt
"Let's go back down to mother and Gigi."
"Copeland, listen to me. Tameka is a good girl and the best woman for you. Do you hear me, boy? Tomorrow take her shopping and buy her a gown for the company's sixty anniversary."
"Alright, mom and Gigi. We'll see you tomorrow night."
"Thanks for visiting us, Momma Olivia and Gigi." I hugged them both."We look forward to seeing you, Tameka, tomorrow night."
We stood outside and waved goodbye as they drove away. I looked at Copeland. I didn't realize I was just in time for a party," I said and went into the house.
"That was a nice visit. It was so nice to see your mother and grandmother.”"No comment. I can't believe my family is all in my business. I thought I made myself clear about this when we got married!" Copeland says."Momma Olivia and Gigi are something else. Well, I certainly enjoyed seeing them tonight." I said, giving him a warm, slightly sarcastic smile.Copeland stood there with his hands in his pockets, looking at me. His calm, detached manner piqued my interest. He didn't exchange a word with me, yet I could tell he wanted to engage me in conversation or something else. I know you want to get that alcohol smell off your body. Did Lizzy splash her drink all over you? I'll go run you a nice hot bath."I could feel his eyes lingering over my face and traveling down my neck. He seemed to be drinking me in. I felt myself blush, but underneath my slight confusion, I felt a burgeoning sense of confidence; feelings I thought were long dead were coming back to life. I sensed I held a sp
I came home from shopping for the party all alone. If you paid Copeland Morton Junior to do so, the man couldn't keep a promise to me. I had only an hour to get dressed and head out the door. When I finally looked in the mirror one last time. I was proud of how everything came together. I must admit. I look pretty good. I knew I didn't have the traditional look of many cute girls. I have one of those faces that look mature but very pretty. My figure looked terrific in this gown. The sales lady helped me pick the perfect evening gown to accent my body type. Since I had curves, the dress fell in just the right places on my slender frame. I like that I wasn't too tall but not too short either. Nothing was out of place on me tonight. From my hair, makeup, nails, and the beautiful gown I had chosen to wear tonight, it all was perfect! I left the bedroom, picked up my clutch, and walked to the living room. By the time I reached the sofa, I had started feeling overwhelmed. I guess Copeland
"Why are you following me?" I glanced around and began walking to the left of the hotel, where I saw a taxi. Copeland had the nerve to follow me and tried to help me down the steps, but I said, "Don't. Please." Copeland put up his hands. "Alright! Alright, I never knew you were so stubborn! Just calm down.""Calm down, calm down. Oooh! Tell Lizzy to calm down!" I replied angrily.I got inside the taxi and closed the door. "Where to miss?"I had the taxi take me to the wedding house. I was steaming angry; II slumped against the rear seat in the cab and closed my eyes, feeling emotionally exhausted. "The nerve of him to accuse me of cheating!"I had no idea this night would turn out like this. Now I'm sure I should have left the past in the past and stayed in Paris. But instead, I felt entirely out of sorts. All I wanted to do was call my mom, then take a hot shower and get in a firm bed with a soft, fluffy pillow. And first thing tomorrow, I'm going to sign those divorce papers and ret
I couldn't stop thinking about my pain. "Where is he keeping those divorce papers? If a divorce is what he wants, I will give it to him!" The more and more I thought and imagined Copeland and Lizzy laughing about how he humiliated me tonight in front of everyone by causing a scene and then spilling champagne all over my beautiful gown. It infuriated me to no end! "Where are those stupid papers?!" I shouted.I want to get this over with now! I broke down crying. All I wanted was to devote tonight to openly weeping-deep, heart-wrenching sobs that begin to unleash on their own. "Tomorrow, I'm heading home to my job and life in Paris. I don't have to stay here and be humiliated this way!"Unexpected Visit _ Copeland (POV)I pulled into the driveway, parking the car at the side door entrance leading directly to the kitchen. I came into the house, which was dark, calling out. "Tameka! Are you here?" There was no answer to my call. "I guess Tameka went to Lynette's house. I can't believe
Copeland thoughts: I sadly lay over here on this lounge sofa, uncomfortable, thinking and looking at my wife; she is a perfect stranger to me. On our wedding day, I had her wrapped around my finger. The sun was shining on her, but I was too blind to see how she smiled at me. I was also too blind to see love was calling us. But I had my mind made up. I was never going to love my wife. I never thought I could love anyone else but Lizzy, but now my feelings for Tameka have surfaced. Is this a moment of weakness? I think about the day she left me for Paris without speaking and how it affected me. I must have felt something and was too prideful to admit it. But now that she's been back in my life this week. She has made me laugh, something I haven't done in a while. Tameka had my back when Gigi and mom were here. I felt loved. Something must be there between us, and why wouldn't there be? She's my sweet, adorable, sexy, and elegant wife. I never thought I would love or want her, but now
Of course, I was dressed and ready with five minutes to spare. So I sat on the sofa waiting, drinking a glass of water. Copeland finally made his way down the stairs. I pretended not to notice him, but how could I not? Copeland walked before me, tucking his shirt down in his jeans. 'I can't believe I'm married to this man!' He's even more handsome now than he was three years ago. But, then, his early twenties only touched the surface of what he has become today. My goodness! Copeland had the perfect butt, and his jeans seemed to take pleasure in cupping it just right. A well-fitted T-shirt that showed off those broad manly shoulders. Copeland's hair is perfectly combed and in place. I sank into my chair, sipping my water as I shifted my eyes in another direction. "I see it still takes you forever to get dressed?" I uttered. "I still have a minute before I'm actually on time. Thank you very much, Mrs. Morton!" Copeland smiled as the feeling of freedom eased it's way back into h
"Why do we act like strangers toward one another?" Copeland inquired of me."I don't know. It was so long ago when we were friends.""Remember when we first met? I do." Copeland proves this by sharing the full account with me. "Hi, we met Friday. So well sought of, my name is Copeland.""Copeland? I don't remember meeting anyone Friday.""I'm the guy you almost killed last Friday with your mop bucket.""Oh!!! I remember now! You mean, you almost ran me down last Friday. My name is Tameka."Yes, the attraction was mutual. In talking with you, I discovered your name was Tameka Latisha Love. But here comes the monkey wrench. When you told me you were sixteen. I had to slam on the brakes!"You don't look no sixteen," I tell you, remember? I laughed, recalling all the details as I listened."But I am sixteen," I reply.Just when everything was going so great! Once you told me how old you were, I knew I had to back off. I wasn't trying
"So, where are we going now?" I asked Copeland as we got in the car, and he drove off. "I know you think I forgot all your pleasures, and even though it's been years, if I don't do this one thing, you will be out of here on the fastest plane leaving tomorrow. But, of course, knowing you, you'll probably take off while I'm sleeping." "What on earth on you talking about now? I hope you keep in mind that I'm not sixteen. I'm a young lady in my twenties now. So whatever you think you still know about me, I could have changed that." "I don't think so..." Copeland teased. "You change. That's unlikely." Copeland says, looking over at me as he's driving. "No, when I think about it. I've changed. I probably like doing this more now than you." He said, winking at me. "I squinted my eyes at him, trying to figure out what was he talking about now?" "I love it when I have you all worked up and confused, especially with that look on your face. Listen carefully. I have Instructions miss fo
