Chapter 3

Author: Cloudy Double
The next afternoon, Jillian called me before 7:00 pm for the first time.

When my phone lit up, I was crouched by the bathroom door and throwing up. My stomach was painfully empty, and the acid reflux burned my throat.

I answered, my voice hoarse. "What's wrong?"

It was quiet on Jillian's end. "Bring the white shirt from your closet to my office."

I had bought the shirt last month for a job interview, and the tags were still on it.

"What do you need my shirt for?" I asked.

There was a brief pause on the other end.

"Jesse spilled coffee on his shirt," Jillian replied. "He has a project presentation in half an hour, and your shirt will be perfect."

I used the sink to pull myself up, and another sharp cramp hit my stomach.

"I'm not feeling well," I said.

"Steven." When she said my name, her voice was firm. "Don't make a scene at a time like this. Just bring the shirt over. It won't take long."

In the end, I went anyway.

It was raining outside, and I waited 20 minutes for a cab.

I held the shirt close to my chest to keep it dry, while the lower half of my pants got soaked.

When I reached the lobby of Holt Group, Jesse came down to meet me. He looked flustered, with coffee stains on the collar of his shirt.

"Sorry to make you come all this way, Steven," he said.

He reached out to shake my hand, then paused when he touched my skin.

"Steven, why are your hands so cold? Are you feeling sick?"

Before I could answer, he lowered his eyes.

"It's all my fault. If I had known you weren't feeling well, I would've stopped Ms. Holt from calling you."

He said it so casually, as if he hadn't been able to stop the call, and I had chosen to stand in the rain.

When Jillian stepped out of the elevator, she happened to hear the last sentence.

Her gaze fell on me.

"Where's the shirt?"

She didn't ask why I was soaked or why my face was so pale.

I handed her the bag.

Jesse hesitated, then said, "Ms. Holt, maybe we should forget it. Steven looks really unwell."

Jillian frowned at me. "If you're feeling sick, go sit somewhere. Don't stand in the lobby making a scene."

The air conditioning in the lobby seemed to chill me to the bone.

When Jesse came out in the fresh shirt, several coworkers were standing by the conference room door.

One of them joked with a grin. "Mr. Cohen, you must work out a lot. That shirt really shows off your build."

Jillian glanced at Jesse without thinking, then quickly looked away.

Jesse's ears turned red. He glanced sideways at me but didn't explain right away.

Once they were done laughing, he finally cleared his throat and said, "Don't get the wrong idea. This shirt belongs to Ms. Holt's husband."

His coworkers only noticed me then. "Ms. Holt's husband?"

One of them stared in surprise. "Ms. Holt is married?"

I thought Jillian would introduce me to everyone.

Instead, she handed Jesse some documents and said flatly, "Steven is just here to drop something off."

Those few words made three years of marriage feel like nothing.

Jesse quickly tried to smooth things over. "Yeah, he's Ms. Holt's husband."

He glanced down at the shirt he was wearing.

"I didn't want to bother him, but Ms. Holt said Steven was generous and wouldn't mind lending me a shirt at the last minute."

Jillian didn't deny it. She only glanced at me. "Go home for now. Don't distract Jesse from his presentation."

Just before the elevator doors closed, Jesse suddenly looked up at me.

The corner of his mouth lifted ever so slightly.

I stood there, soaked and dripping, feeling like an outsider who was only here to make a delivery.

My phone buzzed.

It was a message from Jillian. [Don't wait for me at 7:00 pm tonight. We have a project review after the meeting.]

I stared at the message and suddenly felt that even replying would be a waste of my time.

When I left the office building, it was still raining.

I stood by the roadside, opened a law firm's appointment page, and tapped "Confirm".

Jillian finally answered hoarsely, "I am."The official stamp came down with a faint thud, but I heard it.Our marriage was truly over.I received the finalized divorce papers at 10:26 am.I put the document in my bag.Jillian watched me. "Steven."I looked at her.She took a ring out of her coat pocket. It was my ring. The band had been polished until it gleamed. Her voice was very hoarse. "Can I keep this?"I glanced at it. When we first got married, I put that ring on and spent a long time looking at it.I had said, "It fits pretty well."She took a look at my hand and smiled. "If you like it, keep wearing it."After that, I wore it to work and while driving. I also wore it every time I typed out what I wanted to say to her, only to delete it again.I looked at her, then said, "Do whatever you want."Jillian's hand trembled a little. She finally understood that the worst part wasn't fighting. It was when I no longer cared.Callum's car was parked by the curb. He r

  • Out Of Time   Chapter 9

Callum came with me to the hospital for my follow-up appointment. After reviewing my test results, the doctor told me to stay warm, avoid overexerting myself, and keep my emotions under control.Callum nodded as he handed me my jacket. "You hear that? If you're in pain again, call me first. I don't care what time it is. It's not like I'm running some big corporation."He made me laugh. "Got it."As we left the examination room, a nurse called from the doorway, "Mr. Yale, come get your prescription."Callum answered at once. "Coming!"He took the prescription and turned around. Only then did he notice Jillian standing at the far end of the hall. She was holding a bag of medicine. I had no idea how long she had been listening. She looked deathly pale. The nurse saw her standing in the way and asked, "Are you family, too?"Jillian's breath caught. "I'm Steven's wife."I looked up at her and said calmly, "She's no longer family."The nurse glanced awkwardly at us and said nothin

That evening, Jillian sat at the dining table and waited for me for the first time.At 7:00 pm, her phone didn't ring. When 7:10 pm came, there was still no message.By 7:30 pm, half an hour had passed. The half hour she had once grudgingly given me passed without a word from me. She stared at her phone, then finally sent me a message.[Steven, I'm waiting for you.]The message didn't go through.Jillian stared at it for a long time, then silently began to cry.She got up and went to the study. My wedding ring, the medical records, test results, and surgery consent form were still on the keyboard. She had been too afraid to look at them closely the day before. The papers had felt almost impossibly light. Now, as she read through them again, she noticed the last note in my medical records. It read, "The patient is experiencing significant emotional distress. A family member should accompany him."But that night, she had been out drinking with someone else.Jillian stopped t

When Jillian and I met again, it was at the law firm.Callum came with me. "Speak up if you feel unwell. Don't push yourself. You have someone looking out for you now."I nodded.Jillian was five minutes late, which was unlike her.She used to schedule time with me down to the minute. She had never been late for something as important as signing papers. When she showed up, dark circles showed beneath her eyes. I didn't feel sorry for her at all.The lawyer, Rick Sawyer, slid the documents across the table. "Ms. Holt, Mr. Yale's wishes are clear. There are no child custody issues, and the division of property is straightforward. If you agree, the process should be quick."Jillian's face darkened at once."I don't agree," she said quietly.I wasn't surprised.Jillian never let anyone make decisions without her approval, not even when it came to meeting proposals. How could she possibly accept me ending our marriage without her consent?Rick frowned. "Ms. Holt, ending this ma

Jillian went to the hospital. The nurse checked the records from that night and looked up. "Are you Steven Yale's family?"Jillian's lips pressed into a thin line. "I'm his wife."The nurse's expression grew serious. "Mr. Steven was in so much pain he could barely stand, and he kept holding his phone. We thought he was waiting for someone."Jillian tightened her grip on the medical records. She wanted to say she hadn't known, but the call history said otherwise. The system notification was still on the screen.[Calls from Steven were silenced.]Jillian stared at the words, and her eyes began to sting with tears. It wasn't that she hadn't seen the calls. She just thought I could still wait. After receiving a text message from the law firm, she left the hospital and headed straight there. The receptionist handed her a document. "Mr. Yale said to give you this if you came by, Ms. Holt."It was a divorce agreement.I hadn't asked for anything. I had carefully calculated the div

  • Out Of Time   Chapter 5

Jillian returned to our home at 4:20 am.She stood in the entryway for a while before she realized something was wrong. The light-colored slippers on the shoe cabinet were gone, and no more water with honey I usually left out for her.Jillian walked into the bedroom and found half the closet empty. My usual pajamas were gone, and all my toiletries had been cleared off the bathroom counter. She frowned and called me.The first and second calls wouldn't go through at all.By the seventh attempt, Jillian finally realized I had blocked her.She stared at her screen and let out a quiet laugh. She must have thought it was ridiculous. We had been married for three years, and I had rarely ever raised my voice at her. How could I have possibly blocked her?Jillian walked into the study without giving it much thought. Then she saw my wedding ring, test results, and medical records on the keyboard. There was also the surgery consent form with its corners crumpled from where I had grippe
