Alexandra POV
“You have nothing to be nervous about. It’s just a Halloween party,” my best friend Emmie said.
Easy for her to say she hasn’t been banned from every gathering since she arrived here for being a half-human.
“It’s my first one,” I sighed. “Besides, there’s a full moon tonight.”
“And?”
“Everyone’s going to be hypersensitive and strong.”
“You’re overreacting,” she said, flipping her jet black hair over her shoulder.
“Maybe you’re right. I’ll just stick close to Xavier.”
Emmie grinned. “He is your boyfriend.”
My boyfriend and the Alpha of the Iron Claw pack. Everything in the stars said he was mine because we were fated mates. He’s the one who got me permission to attend the party. Wolfless members of the pack aren’t allowed to attend events on campus. I happen to be the only half-human wolfless in the shifter region. I wasn’t wolfless, though. My wolf would come… eventually.
“Earth to Alexandra? We have a party to get to!”
I offered her a smile. “You’re right.”
The University was loud when we got there. The dark courtyards and classrooms had been lit up with scary pumpkin lanterns, and raised tombstones littered the front lawn.
“This place is wild!” I commented.
Someone had already egged the Dean’s office window. Jaxson University was the only university in the shifter region.
“You haven’t seen anything yet!” Emmie laughed.
“I wonder where Xavier is. He isn’t picking up my calls.” I asked.
Emmie shrugged. “He’s your mate, you should be able to find him.”
Sure, but the mate bond doesn’t work that way because my wolf hasn’t awoken yet.
Eyes followed us, or specifically me, in my sexy pink panther romper costume and torn tights. We walked into a classroom where a group was playing beer pong, and hungry eyes were on me in an instant. I felt like a medium-rare steak served up on a plate.
“Let’s play, Alex!” Emmie said.
“Uhh… I’m going to look for Xavier.”
“Check in Professor Rufus’ office,” a guy in a robot costume said.
Another dude elbowed him, but said nothing.
“Thanks,” I said before exiting.
Professor Rufus’ office was on the second level of the campus building. The level was empty, which made me wonder why Xavier would be up here all alone. This better not be a stupid joke by those guys.
That’s when a strong scent penetrated the air. It was almost electric. Scent and sound joined forces as I got closer to the professor’s office.
“Yes, yes!” A woman moaned.
I froze. “You like that? Damn, you’re so good.”
The woman laughed. “You have no idea how good I am.”
No, it can’t be. There’s no way it’s him.
My blood ran cold, and simultaneously, heat rushed to my cheeks. I had to know for sure, because my heart pounded in my ears and my vision blurred for a split second.
I wrapped a hand around the door and pushed the door inwards.
My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. My mate had another woman bent over the professor’s table. His pants were around his ankles, and the woman’s bunny costume lay discarded on the floor.
“Alexandra!” He barked.
“Get out, bitch!” Faye yelled. “Can’t you see we’re busy?”
Faye was my mortal enemy. She wolf hated me from the second she learned I was wolfless, unlike the many others who had an opinion she lived to make my life hell.
“Busy?” My voice cracked.
Xavier pushed Faye to the side and marched towards me. I thought he would beg and plead for forgiveness and tell me it wasn’t what it looked like. Instead, he wrapped his fingers around my neck and backed me into the wall.
“What are you doing here, babe?” He asked, amusement in his tone.
“How can you still call me babe?”
He chuckled. “Don’t be like that, Alex.”
“Get off me.”
He released me, but didn’t step back.
“How could you hurt me like this, Xavier? Doesn’t the mate bond mean anything?”
“I know you’re not one of us, Alexandra, so you don’t know our ways. I’m a wolf who has needs that can’t be satisfied by just one woman.”
Faye chuckled. “Poor little human. Are you going to cry?”
“Stop it,” I mumbled.
I turned back to my mate. “I gave you everything.”
“You weren’t supposed to find out this way. Now, you have to deal with it. I’m the Alpha of the Iron Claw pack!”
Xavier and I found out we were fated mates three months ago. It was confirmed by his pack’s seer. I didn’t have a wolf, so it was difficult for me to sense him as my mate.
Xavier curled his fingers around my jaw. “Look at me!” He shouted
I did, and met his cool blue eyes with unshed tears in my own.
“It won’t be so bad. You’re still my mate, and that should count for so much more. I’m honouring the moon goddess and doing you a favour. You’re just a wolfless, and you’ll never be anything in this pack without me.”
I was stunned as I listened to him speak.
He brushed my bottom lip with his thumb. “Don’t be stupid about this.”
He leaned in and kissed me full on the lips. My eyes widened in alarm.
“Stop!”
I pushed him. Xavier shook his head. “Don’t make a fucking scene!”
“You shouldn’t have cheated on me. I’m not worthless because I don’t have a wolf yet.”
Faye laughed. “You still have hope that you’ll get a wolf? You’re nothing but a pathetic human.”
I wish she’d just disappear.
“Reject me and get this over with, Xavier,” I snapped.
He blinked and laughed. “There’s no turning back, Alexandra. You lose everything!”
I sniffled but refused to cry in front of him. “It can’t be worse than this.”
He growled. “Fine! It’s your loss! I won’t lose a damn thing. I, Alpha heir Xavier Nightscar, reject you, Alexandra Westwood, as my fated mate.”
The rejection had been put into motion. The process of destroying the destiny-crafted mate bond was excruciating. I panted and battled the urge to scream. He didn’t deserve my tears, even though I wanted to cry so badly. His eyes burned holes into my body, waiting for those sacred words to be uttered.
“I, Alexandra Westwood, accept your rejection.”
The mate bond shattered. The connection between Xavier and me was gone. I didn’t know one could feel this hollow. Yet, he didn’t even seem fazed. He stood tall and menacing, and that shattered me further.
“Good,” Xavier spat. “Give me back the celestial ring I gave you,” he demanded.
I eyed the ring he gave me with a golden band, a deep, dark blue diamond.
“What?” It was a gift. He gave it to me when we started dating.
“It belongs to my pack. Now that you’re no longer my mate, you have nothing to do with the Iron Claw pack. You don’t have my protection anymore!”
I pulled the ring off my finger and handed it back to him.
“I hope you know what this means, Alexandra,” Xavier said.
“Yes, our relationship is over, and we have nothing to do with each other.”
“You’re back to being a half-human in a shifter world that doesn’t want you around.”
Alexandra POV“Would you like me to tell her you’re not home?” Patrice asked. That would have been easier and nicer.I shook my head. “Send her to the drawing room.”Patrice nodded. “Yes, Luna.”I’d never gotten along with Faye’s friends. They were ruthless and cruel. My palms and pits sweat profusely as I make my way to the drawing room.I’m not the same anymore, though. I can fight her if she tries to kill me, and hopefully I’ll come out on top.I closed the double doors behind me and contemplated locking them, but that would be reckless.Sadie stood as soon as she saw me. She clutched her bag to her side. Her hair was damp, and her cheeks were red from something I couldn’t explain. Fear, embarrassment?“Sadie,” I said cautiously.“I’m sure you don’t understand why I’m here. I just had nowhere to go. Faye’s gone, Winter’s dead, and I have nowhere to turn to.”Winter was another one of their friends who died from the same catastrophic disease Faye had. The only thing that saved Faye
Alexandra POVEnzo climbed into the tub after me. The warm water and his body heat created a blend to tackle my nerves.“Are you sure nothing else happened in there, Alex?” Enzo asked, pouring water over my chest.“Nothing happened…” I mumbled.I hadn’t stopped thinking about Nova’s accusations. She would be back. If the attack was as bad as she states the supreme council would want to hold someone accountable.I was their only link to the human world. There are no humans in the shifter region.Enzo wrapped his arms around me and squeezed. “Something’s definitely bothering the Supreme Luna. You know that’s you right?”“I’m still human, Enzo.”“Fuck that.”He held me closer, his hand moving meticulously between breasts. He wasn’t taking this seriously!“If you’re worried some idiots going to try to kick you out because of what happened just know they’ll have to go through me, the Supreme Alpha.”He kissed my cheek and then dragged his tongue along my neck.“I’ll put bodies in the groun
Alexandra POV“I know when you and Enzo left for your getaway, I went MIA, but things were so difficult with my parents. Mom still won’t talk to me, and I think Dad’s banned from talking to me,” Emmie explained. As the party continued, it got colder. Unfortunately for me, no amount of dancing could warm me up, so Emmie and I retreated into the house.“I understand. You needed space.”“I needed to snoop and come up with the truth!”I narrowed my eyes at her teasingly. “Did you snoop Azeal’s ass too?”Her cheeks turned cherry red. “No! What? He’s an Alpha, remember? I’m an omega who was probably cursed for her mother’s sins.”“That’s ridiculous. Have you seen the way he looks at you? He’s probably searching you right now.”She lifted her lips to her nose and made a dismissive noise.“It’s not like he can’t smell me. He could find me if he wanted to. Anyway, I found my mother’s journal from ten years ago.”“I doubt she would have written about your bio dad ten years after she gave birth.
Enzo POVWhile the music played in the background and the laughter grew even higher than the trees, I wandered into the forest.I quickly regretted leaving my mate and beautiful bride at the party and following my half-brother because there he was with his hands on Cindi’s face while he tried to swallow her.“Oh, crap.”Blaze and Cindi broke their kiss.Blaze flashed his eyes and growled at me.I sucked in my bottom lip to hide my smile. I raised my hands and head in surrender. I didn’t want his mate. Wolves were very protective, especially of their mates. Blaze had experienced just how jealous and overprotective I was of Alex firsthand.“I’ll find you back at the party,” Blaze said.“Fine.”Cindi walked up to me and fisted my shirt. “Don’t kill each other.”Any respect for the Alpha with these two? That’s what happens when you’ve known people as long as I’ve known them.Blaze shoved his fists into his pockets.“I let you have your mate, couldn’t let you have mine?” Blaze blasted.“I’
Alexandra POV“What the hell happened?”Enzo barged into the kitchen where I had my feet in a bucket of ice water. Blaze stood behind me while my best friend paced the length of the massive kitchen nervously.“Wolf’s bane? How could that happen?” Enzo demanded.“Your mother, that’s how,” Blaze grumbled. “She’s in pretty bad shape.”“Why?” Enzo clutched at his hair. “Why the hell would she do this of all days?!”“It’s my fault,” I mumbled.“Hey, why would you say that?” Blaze asked softly.“Yeah, cub, you didn’t make her try to kill you,” my mate added.“What if I wasn’t even the target, Enzo? Your mother suffered a lot, too, and she thinks I’m the catalyst for why she lost everything.”Enzo knelt in front of me and took my hands. “You are in no way to blame for my mother’s actions. Everyone can blame me if they want.”Tears sprang to my eyes. “Our only crime was loving each other, huh?”He brushed a tear from my cheek. “My beautiful mate, you’re in no shape for a mating ceremony.”“Wh
Alexandra POVThree Weeks Later I put down the makeup brush and stared at myself in the mirror.“Okay, so my mating ceremony’s today.”“You’re telling me! I can’t believe this day is finally here. Do you think you should pinch me?” Emmie shot up from the queen-size bed behind me.“You’re the one who’s supposed to pinch me!”“Sorry! It’s not like my best friend gets married every day.”Emmie went MIA before Enzo and left the pack for much-needed mate time. I understood my best friend’s need to get away, though. She’d just been told the man she loved with her entire being wasn’t her father, and her mother refused to entertain the topic. What more could a girl do other than escape her problems until they didn’t hurt so much?“Alex, I wish I could stay and watch you finish your make-up, but I have to make sure the guys aren’t getting drunk.”Heat rushed to my cheeks. “You think Enzo’s drunk?”Emmie’s eyes went wide. “No, no! That’s not what I mean. Don’t panic! Just stay here and finish
Alexandra POVDr Zaya made me drink the gross substance anyway. It helped to reduce the pain, but the dull ache was still there. Enzo moved me to his bedroom while he spoke to Cindi, Alex and Dr Zaya. All I’d wanted since I got to the Onyx pack was a warm bed and my mate beside me. Now I couldn’t e
Alexandra POVDarkness fell on another day. Alec caught me off guard by knocking me out with his Alpha power, but it got rid of the pain I felt. Ellis still hadn’t come home yet. She always stopped by my room to make sure I was still being held captive. We didn’t say much to each other these days.
Alexandra POVI yanked him inside. I looked around for the guards, but the surroundings were clear. Where had they all gone?It didn’t matter. I closed the door and locked it.“How did you get past the guards?”“A diversion,” Alec grinned.“You can’t be here! Ellis has this place heavily guarded. T
Alexandra POV“You’ve been keeping a lot of things from me, Alexandra. I thought we were closer than this.”“Just leave me alone.”“You’re not a teenager anymore. We can talk freely.”I was in my old room again, feeling like a teenager. I couldn’t believe she’d taken things this far. On the drive h
