Chapter 1

The Ruin

Chapter 1: The Ruin

The foreclosure notice arrived in a cream envelope.

Not red. Not stamped with anything as dramatic as URGENT. Just cream-colored paper, like they were apologizing for evicting me from my life.

I read it three times before the words stopped blurring.

The estate of Elias Hart has been seized effective immediately. All assets, properties, and debts are now the property of Black Acquisitions.

Black Acquisitions.

The name hit my chest like a physical blow. Everyone in Manhattan knew that name. Everyone knew what it meant.

Lucien Black.

My father's greatest enemy. The man Elias Hart had destroyed in a boardroom twenty years ago—or so the story went. The man who had rebuilt himself from ash and returned twice as vicious.

And now, apparently, he owned everything I had.

The penthouse. The accounts. The paintings my mother left before she died. Even the vintage Omega watch on my wrist—a gift from my father on my eighteenth birthday.

All of it. Gone.

My phone buzzed. Then again. Then a third time.

I didn't have to look. I already knew. The news would be everywhere by now. Hart Falls. Black Rises. They'd probably already written the headlines.

I set the envelope down carefully, as if it might bite, and walked to the window.

Forty floors below, the city kept moving. Taxis. Tourists. People who still had fathers with empires intact.

A soft knock made me flinch.

"Miss Hart?" The doorman's voice was strained. "There are gentlemen here to see you."

I didn't ask who. I already knew.

"Send them up."

They arrived like a funeral procession.

Three men in black suits. No smiles. The one in front carried a leather folio with the Black Acquisitions logo embossed in silver—a serpent eating its own tail.

"Elena Hart?" he asked, though he already knew.

"That's me."

"I'm Attorney Vance. I represent Mr. Black." He didn't offer his hand. "I'm here to discuss the terms of your father's debt."

"I don't have any debt. My father is—" Dead. The word still tasted like broken glass. "The estate should be settled by now."

"The estate is settled." Vance opened the folio and slid a document across the marble counter. "This is what remains."

I looked down.

The number didn't make sense. It was too large. Too impossible. My father had been rich—obscenely rich. How could he owe this much?

"Your father leveraged everything against a venture that failed six months before his death," Vance continued, his tone bored. "Mr. Black purchased the debt at auction. He now holds full claim to all Hart assets—including certain… obligations."

I looked up. "Obligations?"

Vance's expression didn't change, but something flickered in his eyes. "Clause seventeen. Page twelve."

I turned to the page.

In the event of default, the debtor agrees to surrender, upon demand, any and all personal property of value—including, but not limited to, real estate, liquid assets, heirlooms, and any living descendants of the debtor's bloodline.

My blood went cold.

"Living descendants," I whispered. "That's not real. That's not enforceable."

"Mr. Black disagrees." Vance reached into his jacket and produced a second document. "He's prepared to negotiate an alternative arrangement."

I didn't want to touch it. My hands reached for it anyway.

The paper was heavy. Expensive. The kind of stationery men like Lucien Black used to remind you they could afford to wipe their shoes with gold.

One paragraph. Five lines.

The undersigned agrees to one night in the company of Mr. Lucien Black, at a location of his choosing, for the purpose of settling all outstanding debts. No further obligations will be required. This offer expires at midnight.

One night.

One night for everything.

"Why?" The word came out raw. "What does he want with me?"

Attorney Vance finally smiled. It wasn't a nice smile.

"Mr. Black doesn't explain himself, Miss Hart. He only makes offers." He placed a pen beside the document. "The alternative is complete forfeiture. You'll lose everything. The watch on your wrist. The clothes on your back. Even the air in this penthouse—it's his air now."

I looked at the clock on the wall.

7:42 PM.

Four hours and eighteen minutes until midnight.

I signed.

Of course I signed. What choice did I have?

The moment my pen left the paper, Vance's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, then at me.

"He's waiting."

"He can wait. I need to change."

"He said tonight, Miss Hart. He didn't say when." Vance stepped aside, gesturing toward the door. "The car is downstairs. I suggest you don't keep him waiting."

I didn't change. I walked out wearing what I had on—a black silk dress from three seasons ago, bare feet shoved into heels I'd left by the door.

The car was black. Tinted windows. No license plate that I could see.

The driver didn't speak. He just drove.

Through Manhattan. Over the bridge. Into a part of Brooklyn I'd never seen—warehouses, empty streets, buildings that looked abandoned but probably cost more than my entire future.

We stopped outside an iron gate.

No sign. No house number. Just a gate and a camera and a feeling like I was walking into something I wouldn't walk out of.

The gate opened.

And there he was.

Lucien Black stood in the doorway of a converted factory, sleeves rolled to his elbows, watching me like I was already his.

"You're late," he said.

His voice was exactly what I expected—low, calm, and utterly without mercy.

"The offer said one night." I lifted my chin. "It didn't say I had to be pleasant."

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he smiled.

It was the most terrifying thing I'd ever seen.

"Come inside, Elena," he said softly. "Let's see how long that fire lasts."
