The air inside the VIP suite felt like it had been sucked out of the room, leaving Kaelen suffocating in the sudden, crushing reality of Vance’s presence.
Vance’s hand remained firmly anchored on Kaelen’s hip, his grip so unyielding that his fingers dug through the thin silk of Kaelen’s shirt, leaving no doubt about the sheer physical power he held over him. His hazel eyes, dark, furious, and blazing with a raw, possessive heat, scanned every inch of Kaelen’s flushed face.
"Let go of me," Kaelen choked out, his voice shaking as he pressed both hands flat against Vance’s chest, trying desperately to push him away. "Vance, let me go!"
"Or what?" Vance whispered, his tone terrifyingly soft as he stepped forward, forcing Kaelen back until the back of Kaelen’s knees hit the edge of the velvet lounge sofa. "Are you going to scream, little bird? Call the guards? Tell them your stepbrother broke the sacred rules of your little velvet playground?"
Before Kaelen could answer, Vance used his leverage to push him down onto the soft, plush cushions. In one fluid, commanding motion, Vance crowded over him, planting one hand beside Kaelen’s head on the leather armrest, trapping Kaelen completely beneath his shadow.
Kaelen’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped beast. The scent of rain, amber, and Vance’s expensive cologne filled his lungs, dizzying in its intensity. "How did you find this place? How did you know?"
"Did you really think you could slip out of the Sterling estate without me knowing?" Vance’s lips curved into a sharp, cruel smile, though his eyes remained deadly serious. He reached out with his free hand, his knuckles lightly grazing the hot, sensitive skin of Kaelen’s cheek before sliding down to his throat, feeling the rapid, frantic pulse fluttering beneath his palm. "I’ve had eyes on you for weeks, Kaelen. I watched you hide those letters. I watched you sweat at the dinner table. And when you paid a back-alley broker for this metal card, I bought out the entire night’s auction before your name even hit the ledger."
Kaelen froze, his eyes widening in complete shock. "You... you bought the room?"
"I bought you," Vance corrected softly, his thumb pressing lightly against Kaelen’s lower lip, tracing its trembling shape. "The contract for Room Seven was listed as open compliance. Fifty thousand dollars down, another fifty upon completion. A desperate price for a desperate boy. Do you have any idea what kind of monsters sit in these VIP rooms, Kaelen? Do you have any idea whose hands would be on you right now if I hadn't stepped in?"
A cold shudder ran through Kaelen’s body, but the embarrassment and humiliation burning in his chest quickly ignited into white-hot fury.
"I don't need you to save me!" Kaelen spat, thrashing beneath Vance’s heavy frame, his fingers grabbing Vance’s suit lapels. "You don't own me, Vance! You’re just a hypocrite who mocks me in front of Arthur, and now you’re using this to ruin me even more!"
"I don't give a damn about Arthur," Vance snarled, the composure slipping from his face for a fraction of a second, exposing a glimpse of the dangerous, unhinged storm beneath. He leaned down, his face inches from Kaelen’s, his breath hot against Kaelen’s mouth. "And as long as you carry my family’s name, nobody touches you. Nobody looks at you the way you were begging to be looked at tonight. You belong under my roof, under my rules, and under my command."
The raw, possessive weight of Vance’s words made Kaelen’s core throb with a dangerous, forbidden heat. It was terrifying, infuriating, and excruciatingly steamy. Kaelen hated him, hated his arrogant dominance, hated his cruel taunts, yet the sensation of Vance’s broad chest crushing against his own made his breath hitch, his body betraying him with a low, involuntary whimper.
Vance heard it. His eyes darkened instantly, his gaze dropping to Kaelen’s parted lips.
"Look at you," Vance murmured, his voice dropping an octave, becoming a hoarse, lethal purr. "So brave at the dinner table, but down here? You’re trembling just because I’m standing over you. You wanted a stranger to take control, Kaelen? You wanted to know what it feels like to yield?"
Vance’s hand slid down Kaelen’s neck, his fingers tangling into Kaelen’s dark hair, holding his head still as he leaned down. His teeth grazed the shell of Kaelen’s ear, making a sharp, breathless gasp burst from Kaelen’s throat.
"Tell me," Vance whispered, his hand sliding down to rest possessively over Kaelen’s waist, pressing him deeper into the velvet. "Tell me who owns this night."
"No..." Kaelen gasped out, his hands clenching tightly into Vance’s suit jackets. "Vance... don't..."
"Say it," Vance commanded, his lips trailing a searing line down Kaelen’s jawline, resting right against his frantic pulse. "Say my name, Kae."
Kaelen closed his eyes, fighting the overwhelming sensation threatening to pull him under. The touch was too much, too intense, too possessive, blurring the line between pure hatred and an explosive, dangerous attraction he’d spent years trying to suppress. He was about to bite his lip and force out a refusal when a sharp, muffled crack echoed through the heavy walls of the suite.
Vance instantly went dead still.
All the heat in Vance’s expression vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, lethal alertness. His hand snapped away from Kaelen’s hair, moving with terrifying speed to the inside breast pocket of his suit jacket.
Crack! Crack!
"Gunshots," Kaelen whispered, his face draining of all color as the muffled sounds of shouting and shattering glass echoed from the hallway outside.
"Stay down," Vance ordered softly, his voice transformed into absolute, cold authority. He smoothly pulled a sleek, midnight-black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his jacket, flicking the safety off with a soft, metallic click.
Kaelen’s heart nearly stopped. "Vance... where did you get a gun?!"
"I told you, Kaelen," Vance said, standing up and stepping between Kaelen and the heavy ebony doors, his posture completely relaxed despite the deadly weapon in his hand. "You have no idea what kind of world you walked into tonight."
Before Kaelen could move, the heavy suite door was kicked open with a deafening bang.
Two men dressed in tactical black gear and ballistic vests burst into the room, their suppressed submachine guns raised. But Vance didn't flinch. Moving with astonishing, lethal grace, Vance fired two suppressed shots before the men could even clear the threshold.
The low thwip-thwip of Vance’s silenced pistol was followed by the heavy thuds of the two intruders collapsing to the marble floor, blood pooling out onto the pristine white tiles.
Kaelen gasped, pressing himself back against the sofa, his eyes wide in utter disbelief. This wasn't the arrogant playboy who spent his weekends lounging in executive boardrooms or chasing high-society socialites. Vance moved with the cold, practiced precision of a trained assassin.
"Get up," Vance snapped, dropping the empty magazine from his pistol and clicking a fresh one into place from his pocket without even looking down. He reached out with his free hand, grabbing Kaelen’s wrist and hoisting him to his feet in one powerful motion. "We’re leaving."
"Who were those men?!" Kaelen panicked, his legs shaking so badly he could barely stand as Vance pulled him past the bodies on the floor.
"Arthur’s associates," Vance said grimly, pulling Kaelen out into the crimson-curtained hallway. The corridor was in utter chaos, smoke filled the air, alarm lights flashed red against the velvet walls, and the masked patrons were screaming as heavy gunfire echoed from the lower main floor. "Arthur’s syndicate connections found out about The Obsidian Vault’s private transaction records tonight. They came to wipe the servers, and kill anyone inside."
Vance kept a firm, unyielding grip on Kaelen’s hand, dragging him through a hidden door concealed behind a heavy tapestry. They burst out into a narrow, stone emergency stairwell that led up toward the street level.
"Arthur?" Kaelen repeated, his head spinning. "Arthur runs a syndicate?!"
"I told you, you’re an idiot for playing with fire you don't understand," Vance growled, pulling Kaelen up the stairs. "Arthur isn't just a corporate patriarch, Kaelen. He’s the head of a regional laundering cartel. And the blackmailer targeting you? He’s one of Arthur’s lieutenants trying to test if you knew anything about your mother’s old accounts."
Kaelen’s breath caught. His mother... the charity foundation... It wasn't just a coincidence. His whole life under the Sterling roof had been a lie, built on top of a dark, lethal web.
They reached the top of the stairwell. Vance kicked open a heavy metal exit door, pulling Kaelen out into the cool, rain-slicked alleyway behind the club. A sleek, matte-black sports car was idling in the darkness, its engine humming like a purring beast.
Vance shoved Kaelen into the passenger seat, slamming the door shut before vaulting over the hood and sliding into the driver's side. He slammed the gearshift into drive, the tires screeching loudly as the car launched out of the alley and melted into the late-night city traffic.
Twenty minutes later, the car pulled into the private underground garage of an exclusive, high-rise luxury penthouse overlooking the city skyline, far away from the main Sterling estate.
The garage doors sealed shut behind them with a heavy, automated thud.
Kaelen sat in the leather passenger seat, his hands shaking violently as the adrenaline began to wear off, leaving him cold and exhausted. He stared out the windshield, his mind reeling from the bloodshed, the truth about Arthur, and the terrifying reality of the man sitting next to him.
Vance turned off the engine. Silence filled the dark cabin.
Without a word, Vance unbuckled his seatbelt and reached into the back seat, pulling out a thick, black leather folder. He unzipped it and tossed it directly into Kaelen’s lap.
Kaelen looked down at the folder, his fingers trembling as he opened it. Inside lay a single, crisp legal document stamped with a red wax seal, along with a certified bank draft made out for the exact sum of his mother’s blackmail debt, one hundred thousand dollars.
"What is this?" Kaelen whispered.
"That is your debt, paid in full," Vance said, his voice dropping into that dark, possessive baritone that made Kaelen’s skin flush. "The blackmailer has been dealt with. Your mother’s charity is clean. Arthur will never know you were involved."
Kaelen looked up, staring at Vance in absolute shock. "You... you paid for it?"
"I don't leave my property in debt to other men," Vance said coldly, turning in his seat to face Kaelen. He reached out, his long fingers cupping Kaelen’s jaw, forcing Kaelen to look directly into his blazing hazel eyes. "Read the terms, Kaelen."
Kaelen’s eyes scanned the document in his lap. His breath caught in his throat as the words materialized on the page:
AGREEMENT OF EXCLUSIVE SUBMISSION & PROTECTION
For a period of thirty (30) days, the undersigned party agrees to total, uninhibited personal compliance under the direct authority of Vance Sterling. In exchange, absolute financial immunity, physical security, and protection from all external threats will be provided.
"You're out of your mind," Kaelen breathed, trying to pull his face away from Vance’s grip, but Vance held him firm. "You think I’m going to sign a contract to be your... your servant?!"
"Not my servant, little brother," Vance purred softly, his thumb pressing firmly against Kaelen’s bottom lip, pulling it down slightly to expose his slick, white teeth. "My secret. For thirty days, you belong to me. You live in this penthouse. You answer my calls. You follow my rules. And behind closed doors... you surrender every single inch of your body to me whenever I demand it."
"And if I refuse?" Kaelen demanded, his voice laced with a mixture of defiance and a sudden, electric heat coursing through his veins.
Vance leaned in closer, his lips grazing Kaelen’s ear as his free hand slid down to rest heavily over Kaelen’s thigh, squeezing firmly.
"If you refuse, I walk away," Vance whispered darkly. "I let Arthur’s men find out about your little midnight excursion. I let them dismantle your life piece by piece. But if you sign... I will protect you. I will keep you safe. And I teach you exactly what happens to boys who try to play with monsters."
Vance pulled back slightly, reaching into his suit pocket and producing a heavy, gold-plated fountain pen. He held it out between them, his gaze locked onto Kaelen with an unyielding, predatory patience.
Kaelen looked at the pen. He looked at the contract.
Every logical bone in his body screamed at him to run, to escape this dangerous, possessive man who had spent years tormenting him. But as he looked into Vance’s dark eyes, feeling the intense, suffocating physical heat radiating between them in the dark car, Kaelen knew there was no escaping.
Vance wasn't just his stepbrother anymore. He was his captor, his protector, and the only man who had ever made Kaelen’s blood burn with such terrifying, addictive desire.
With shaking fingers, Kaelen reached out and took the pen.
