The sharp, rhythmic clinking of silver cutlery against bone china sounded less like a polite family dinner and more like a slow, deliberate execution.
Kaelen Mercer kept his eyes fixed firmly on the polished mahogany dining table. He watched the light from the crystal chandelier bounce off the gilded rim of his plate, taking a quiet, controlled breath through his nose. One. Two. Three. He forced his hands to remain still where they rested on his lap, fingers tightly interlaced to mask the subtle tremble in his knuckles.
"The quarterly yields from the European branch are acceptable, Vance," Arthur Sterling’s voice cut through the soft background hum of classical music. The patriarch of the Sterling empire sat at the head of the table, his posture as unyielding as the concrete pillars supporting his fortune. He didn't look up from his steak as he spoke. "Though I expect a four percent increase before the third quarter closes. We don't settle for 'acceptable' in this house."
"Consider it done, Father," replied the dark, smooth baritone sitting directly across from Kaelen.
That voice alone was enough to send a sharp, instinctual jolt of heat and irritation straight down Kaelen’s spine.
Vance Sterling sat draped in an immaculate, tailor-made charcoal suit, looking every bit the ruthless heir to a multi-billion-dollar empire. His dark hair was combed back with careless perfection, framing an angular jawline and sharp, piercing hazel eyes that seemed to strip away every layer of defense a person had. To the outside world, Vance was the golden boy, a brilliantly cold corporate strategist by day, and an elusive, notorious playboy by night.
To Kaelen, he was a living, breathing torment.
"And you, Kaelen?"
Kaelen stiffened as Arthur’s heavy, critical gaze finally shifted to him. The older man’s eyes were cold, assessing Kaelen not as a son, but as an inconvenient piece of baggage brought into the estate when Kaelen’s mother married into the family six years ago.
"How are your history studies progressing?" Arthur asked, his tone laced with a faint, patronizing disinterest. "I trust you haven't forgotten that your allowance remains contingent on maintaining a respectable academic standing."
Before Kaelen could open his mouth to answer, a low, mockingly smooth chuckle echoed from across the table.
Vance cut an exceptionally tender piece of sirloin, his lips curving into a slow, dangerous smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Oh, leave the poor boy alone, Father. Kaelen works remarkably hard. In fact, I believe he spends nearly all his evening hours buried in his room. Reading... or perhaps just staring at the ceiling, wondering what it feels like to actually live a little."
Kaelen’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth groaned. "My grades are well above the requirement, Arthur," Kaelen said, forcing his voice to sound steady, entirely ignoring Vance’s bite. "And my time is spent productively."
"Is it?" Vance tilted his head, his hazel eyes locking onto Kaelen’s with a predatory focus. He leaned back against his chair, swirling the deep red wine in his crystal glass. "Because from where I stand, little brother, you look remarkably restless lately. Like a caged bird practically begging for someone to rattle his doors. Tell me, do you ever leave the estate without permission, or are you still the perfect, fragile little virgin keeping his hands clean?"
The air in the dining room turned instantly frigid.
Kaelen felt the blood rush to his ears, a hot, searing wave of embarrassment and white-hot rage washing over him. Vance knew exactly where to strike. He knew Kaelen’s pride was his weakest point, and he took immense pleasure in shredding it in front of the one man Kaelen was forced to rely on for financial survival.
"Vance," Arthur scolded lightly, though there was no real reprimand in his tone. "Mind your manners."
"Just making conversation, Father," Vance drawled, taking a slow sip of his wine, his gaze never leaving Kaelen’s face. "It’s tragic, really. So much youthful passion, completely wasted behind locked doors."
Kaelen’s fork scraped loudly against his plate as he abruptly set it down. He couldn't do this. Not tonight. Not when his throat was already tight with a secret that was actively suffocating him.
If you only knew, Kaelen thought bitterly, his pulse hammering against his ribs. If you only knew what I’m going to do tonight.
Nobody in this grand, cold mansion knew about the dark shadow hanging over Kaelen's head. Nobody knew about the anonymous blackmail letters that had started arriving two weeks ago, detailed threats threatening to drag his late mother’s charity foundation through the mud using forged financial records unless an astronomical sum of cash was delivered by midnight tonight. Kaelen had spent every waking hour searching for a way out, but his personal bank accounts were monitored, his allowance strictly controlled by Arthur. He had no choice. He was backed into a corner, pushed to an absolute brink where desperate men made desperate moves.
"If you'll excuse me," Kaelen said, his voice clipped as he stood up from the table. "I have a headache. I’m going to my room."
Arthur merely offered a stiff nod, already shifting his focus back to his financial reports. But as Kaelen turned on his heel and walked away, he felt Vance’s eyes burn into his back like a brand, heavy, possessive, and dangerously observant.
Two hours later, the Sterling estate was swallowed by absolute silence.
Kaelen stood in front of the full-length mirror in his private bathroom, his breath coming in shallow, nervous hitches. He had stripped out of his casual clothes and changed into a plain, fitted black silk shirt and dark trousers. His cheeks were flushed, his dark eyes wide with a mixture of terror and reckless adrenaline.
There’s no turning back now, he said to his reflection.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, matte-black metal card. Printed on its surface in refined, raised crimson lettering were two words: THE OBSIDIAN VAULT.
It had taken every scrap of leverage, every contact he possessed, and a frightening amount of money borrowed from dark corners to secure this single-use entry pass. The Obsidian Vault was legendary in the city's high-society underbelly, an ultra-exclusive, underground velvet-lined club where the wealthy, the elite, and the desperate went to shed their identities. It was a place built on total anonymity, absolute submission, and uninhibited fantasy.
A high-end auction took place in the lower levels every night, where elite, wealthy clients paid astronomical sums for guaranteed, absolute compliance from anonymous sellers. Kaelen wasn't going there to party. He was going there to sell the only thing he had left that wasn't tied up in the Sterling name: himself. One night of complete, blindfolded surrender in exchange for enough raw cash to burn the blackmail threat to the ground forever.
And more than that... a dark, twisted part of Kaelen wanted to shatter the innocent, helpless image Vance so mercilessly mocked. He wanted to destroy the pure, pristine cage he’d been trapped in.
Slipping the black card into his pocket, Kaelen moved silently to his balcony, expertly avoiding the security cameras he’d spent days memorizing, and vanished into the cold night air.
The entrance to The Obsidian Vault was hidden down a quiet, narrow alleyway in the city’s historic district, tucked behind an unlabelled heavy oak door guarded by two towering men in midnight-black suits.
When Kaelen presented the black metal card, the guards didn't ask for a name. They didn't ask for identification. One of them simply scanned the card, the machine emitting a low, green beep, before pulling the door open to reveal a descending flight of stone stairs dimly lit by warm, flickering wall sconces.
Kaelen swallowed hard, stepping down into the warmth below.
The air inside smelled intoxicating, a rich, thick blend of expensive sandalwood, raw leather, crushed velvet, and a faint, sweet undertone of high-end bourbon. Soft, lingering bass thrummed through the floorboards, carrying a heavy, dark rhythm that seemed to synchronize with Kaelen’s racing heart.
A masked host dressed in a tailored velvet coat approached him instantly, bowing low. "Welcome to the Vault, sir. You are scheduled for the private wing, correct?"
"Yes," Kaelen said, his voice surprisingly firm despite the storm raging in his chest. "Room Seven."
"Right this way."
The host led him down a long, labyrinthine hallway draped in floor-to-ceiling crimson curtains. The atmosphere was thick with heavy sensual tension; faint, stifled gasps and low, commanding whispers bled through the thick doors they passed, making Kaelen’s skin flush with a sudden, overwhelming heat.
Finally, the host stopped outside a grand, double-paneled door carved from dark ebony wood. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a soft, thick strip of black silk.
"The rules of the VIP suite are absolute," the host instructed softly, turning to face Kaelen. "The client has requested complete anonymity. You will wear the blindfold before entering. You will not attempt to remove it, nor will you ask for their identity. In return, your payment has already been verified and locked into escrow. Do you understand?"
Kaelen looked at the black silk in the host's hands. This was it. The point of no return.
"I understand," Kaelen whispered.
The host stepped closer, raising the silk ribbon and tying it securely around Kaelen’s head. Instantly, darkness swallowed him whole. His other senses heightened exponentially, the rustle of the velvet curtains, the faint scent of rain clinging to his own skin, and the loud, rhythmic thudding of his own pulse hammering in his ears.
The heavy door groaned open. The host guided Kaelen forward by his elbow, stepping into the room before pulling back.
"Enjoy your evening, sir."
The heavy door clicked shut behind him, the sound echoing like a tomb closing.
Kaelen stood frozen in the middle of the room, encased in total darkness. He could feel the plush, ridiculously soft carpet beneath his shoes. The air in this room was cooler, carrying the distinct, heavy fragrance of rare amber, dark cedar, and... rain.
A sharp, sudden shiver ran down his spine. That scent felt terrifyingly familiar, but before his mind could grasp why, the soft sound of slow, heavy footsteps echoed across the hard floor toward him.
Someone was in the room with him.
Kaelen’s breath caught in his throat. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words died before they could form.
The footsteps stopped directly in front of him. A heavy, commanding presence radiated off the stranger, radiating a wave of sheer physical heat that made Kaelen’s knees feel dangerously weak.
Without a word, a large, warm hand reached out through the dark. Long, calloused fingers brushed gently against Kaelen’s jawline. The touch was agonizingly slow, tracing the curve of his chin, sliding down his throat, and coming to rest over the erratic pounding of his pulse.
Kaelen gasped, flinching slightly at the sudden contact, but the hand didn't pull away. Instead, the grip tightened just enough to tilt Kaelen’s head back, exposing his bare neck.
"Trembling already?" a voice murmured.
The baritone was low, hoarse, and dropped to a dark, lethal whisper, grazing right against the sensitive skin beneath Kaelen’s ear. The stranger’s breath was hot, smelling faintly of fine wine and dark cocoa.
Kaelen’s whole body went rigid. A wave of electric shock surged through his veins, making his core throb with a sudden, ungodly heat. The touch wasn't gentle, it was absolute, possessive, and brutally dominant. The stranger’s other hand slid down Kaelen’s spine, gripping his waist tightly and hauling Kaelen’s body flush against a broad, hard chest.
"Please..." Kaelen breathed out, his voice shaking uncontrollably as he surrendered to the overwhelming physical dominance. He reached up instinctively, his hands coming to rest against the stranger's broad shoulders, feeling the expensive fabric of a tailored suit. "Just... tell me what you want me to do."
A dark, dangerous laugh vibrated against Kaelen’s chest. The stranger leaned in closer, his lips brushing against the sensitive shell of Kaelen’s ear, his teeth grazing the lobe with a sharp, possessive pressure that made Kaelen whimper out loud.
"What do I want?" the man whispered softly, his fingers digging possessively into Kaelen’s hip, holding him completely helpless in his grip. "I want you to learn your lesson, little bird."
Kaelen’s mind went completely blank. Little bird?
Before he could process the phrase, the stranger reached up with his free hand. With one violent, sudden motion, he yanked the silk blindfold away.
The sudden glare of dim golden light hit Kaelen’s eyes, forcing him to blink rapidly. The room slowly came into focus, a massive, opulent suite lined with black marble, mirrors, and a king-sized bed draped in dark silk.
Kaelen raised his eyes, looking up at the man holding him pinned against his chest.
His breath froze in his lungs. The color drained from his face so fast he felt dizzy.
Standing over him, his hazel eyes burning with a terrifying, unhinged mix of dark obsession and white-hot rage, was not a stranger.
It was Vance.
Vance’s charcoal suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened, revealing the sharp column of his throat. His knuckles were white where he gripped Kaelen's waist, his body towering over Kaelen with an suffocating, undeniable authority. The mocking smirk he’d worn at the dinner table was completely gone, replaced by a ruthless, predatory storm.
"How... how could it be you?" Kaelen choked out, his voice barely a breath as his hands trembled against Vance's chest. "Vance... what are you doing here?!"
Vance didn't let him go. Instead, his grip tightened, pulling Kaelen even closer until there wasn't a single inch of space left between them. He leaned down, his eyes locking onto Kaelen's trembling lips with a terrifying, possessive heat.
"You came here begging to be ruined by a stranger tonight, Kaelen?" Vance’s voice dropped to a low, dangerous growl that sent a dangerous thrill straight through Kaelen's core. "You should have asked me. Nobody gets to own you... except me.”
