The heavy gold fountain pen felt like a lead weight in Kaelen’s trembling fingers.
The silence inside the matte-black sports car was suffocating, broken only by the faint, rhythmic pulse of Kaelen’s rapid breathing. Vance sat beside him, unmoving, an unyielding wall of muscle and authority in the dim leather interior of the luxury underground garage. He wasn't rushing him. He didn't need to. Vance knew he held every single card, and he enjoyed watching Kaelen realize it.
Kaelen pressed the nib of the pen against the crisp parchment lying in his lap. The black ink bloomed on the white paper, sealing his fate letter by letter: K-a-e-l-e-n M-e-r-c-e-r.
The moment the final stroke was complete, Vance’s large, calloused hand moved with terrifying speed. He didn't just take the document; his long fingers wrapped around Kaelen’s wrist, pulling Kaelen’s body halfway across the center console.
"Good boy," Vance murmured, his voice a low, gravelly purr that sent a sharp, electric shiver straight down Kaelen’s spine. Vance took the folder, inspected the signature with a slow, dangerous curve of his lips, and tossed it onto the dashboard.
Before Kaelen could pull back, Vance’s grip on his wrist tightened, dragging him even closer until Kaelen was almost pressed against Vance’s chest. Vance’s free hand reached up, his long fingers cupping the back of Kaelen’s neck, holding him completely immobilized.
"Rule number one of your new life, Kae," Vance whispered, his hot breath grazing Kaelen’s trembling lips. "When we are behind closed doors, you don't flinch away from me. You don't look away. You give me your full, undivided attention."
"We're in a car, Vance," Kaelen choked out, his chest heaving as he tried to maintain a shred of defiance. "Let go of me."
"We are in my garage, in my car, under my building," Vance corrected softly, his hazel eyes darkening into something primal. He leaned in, his lips brushing against Kaelen’s earlobe, his teeth catching the soft flesh in a sharp, possessive bite that made Kaelen gasp aloud. "Which means you belong to me. Now get out."
Vance released him so abruptly Kaelen almost stumbled against the passenger door. His heart was hammering a violent rhythm against his ribs, his skin flushing hot where Vance’s teeth had touched him. Without another word, Kaelen unlatched the door and stepped out onto the polished concrete floor of the private garage.
The elevator ride up to the penthouse was a lesson in psychological torture.
They stood side-by-side in the mirrored glass box, the metal doors sealing them in as the elevator shot upward toward the top floor. In the reflection, Kaelen could see the stark contrast between them. Kaelen looked wrecked, his hair slightly disheveled, his fitted black silk shirt wrinkled, his dark eyes wide and glossy with a mixture of fear and unconfessed adrenaline.
Vance, on the other hand, looked like an apex predator returning from a casual stroll. He had removed his charcoal suit jacket, slinging it over one broad shoulder, his crisp white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar to reveal the tanned skin of his throat. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, exposing thick, veined arms that had just effortlessly killed two armed men an hour ago.
Vance didn't touch him in the elevator. He didn't have to. His heavy, suffocating presence filled every inch of the small space, his gaze locked onto Kaelen’s reflection with an unblinking, possessive focus.
Ding.
The heavy glass doors slid open directly into the private foyer of the penthouse.
Kaelen stepped out, his breath catching slightly as he took in the sheer scale of the place. It was a sprawling, ultra-modern masterwork of dark marble, floor-to-ceiling glass walls, and minimalist luxury. The entire city skyline sparkled like a sea of diamonds outside the massive windows, sprawling out beneath them in silent submission.
"This is your home for the next thirty days," Vance said, stepping past him and tossing his suit jacket onto a leather armchair. "The main master suite is down the hall to the right. My quarters are to the left."
"I'm sleeping in a separate room," Kaelen said quickly, his voice carrying a defensive edge.
Vance stopped in his tracks. He turned slowly, his hazel eyes locking onto Kaelen with an amused, dangerous tilt of his head. "Did you read the contract, Kae? You sleep where I tell you to sleep. You wake up when I tell you to wake up. But for tonight, you can have the guest suite. You look like you're about to collapse, and I prefer my conquests fully conscious."
Kaelen’s jaw clenched. "I am not your conquest."
"Not yet," Vance purred, walking toward the grand marble kitchen island and pouring two fingers of amber bourbon into a crystal tumbler. He took a slow sip, his eyes tracking Kaelen’s every movement over the rim of the glass. "Go wash off the smell of that club. Clean clothes are already laid out in the suite. We have a long day tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Kaelen repeated, frowning. "What happens tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow, you start your new job," Vance said smoothly, setting the glass down with a soft clink. "As my personal executive assistant at Sterling Enterprises."
Kaelen stared at him in utter disbelief. "Are you insane?! Arthur expects me at the university! If I suddenly start working directly under you at headquarters, he’ll suspect something immediately!"
"Arthur won't suspect a thing," Vance said, his tone turning ice-cold and utterly ruthless. "Because I already handled it. I called Arthur twenty minutes ago while you were staring out the car window. I told him I caught you trying to embezzle funds from your mother's foundation to cover gambling debts."
Kaelen’s blood ran cold. "You... you what?!"
"I told him," Vance continued, stepping closer until he was standing directly over Kaelen, "that to save the family from a public scandal, I paid off your debt myself. And in exchange, I demanded full custody of your schedule. You are taking a leave of absence from your studies, and you are working off your debt under my direct supervision at the office. Arthur was delighted. He thinks I’m punishing you."
"You ruined my reputation with Arthur!" Kaelen yelled, his chest heaving with white-hot rage as he shoved Vance's chest. "He already hated me! Now he thinks I'm a thief!"
Vance didn't even sway under Kaelen’s shove. Instead, he reached out, his long fingers wrapping around Kaelen’s waist and yanking him forward until Kaelen’s hips slammed flush against his own.
"Arthur thought you were a weak, useless little charity case, Kaelen," Vance growled low in his throat, his face dipping down until his nose brushed against Kaelen’s flushed cheek. "Now he thinks you're my problem. Which keeps his eyes off you, and keeps his syndicate hitmen away from your throat. You should be thanking me on your knees."
"I will never thank you," Kaelen spat, his heart hammering violently as the proximity of Vance’s body sent that same terrifying, treacherous wave of heat pooling into his stomach.
Vance’s hand slid down Kaelen’s back, pressing firmly against the small of his spine, arching Kaelen’s body into his. "We’ll see about that, little bird. Now go to bed before I decide to collect night one of your contract right here on this kitchen counter."
Kaelen tore himself out of Vance’s grip, his face burning red, and sprinted down the hallway toward the guest suite, slamming the door shut behind him.
The next morning arrived with brutal swiftness.
Kaelen woke up at six in the morning to the sound of his bedroom door clicking open. He sat up instantly, pulling the silk sheets up to his chest, his heart leaping into his throat.
Vance stood in the doorway, already fully dressed in a three-piece dark navy suit that screamed absolute corporate power. He looked immaculate, pristine, and entirely untired, holding a paper bag from an elite bakery and a steaming cup of dark coffee.
"Get up," Vance commanded softly, tossing a sharp black garment bag onto the foot of Kaelen’s bed. "We leave in twenty minutes."
Kaelen rubbed his eyes, trying to clear the fog from his brain. "What is that?"
"Your uniform," Vance replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "Fit for the personal assistant of the executive vice president."
Ten minutes later, Kaelen stood in front of the bathroom mirror, staring at his reflection in shock. The garment bag contained a custom-tailored, dark charcoal suit that fit his frame with terrifying precision. The fabric was Italian wool, smooth as glass, hugging his shoulders and waist in a way that felt subtle yet intoxicatingly high-end.
Vance had memorized his exact measurements without ever asking.
When Kaelen stepped out into the living room, Vance was standing by the glass windows, reviewing files on his tablet. He looked up, his hazel eyes slowly sweeping down Kaelen’s body from his dark, neatly combed hair down to his polished leather shoes. A slow, dark satisfaction flashed across Vance’s features.
"Acceptable," Vance murmured, walking over and reaching out.
Before Kaelen could pull back, Vance’s fingers reached for Kaelen’s silk tie. Vance stepped in dangerously close, his large hands working the knot with practiced efficiency, his knuckles lightly grazing Kaelen’s collarbone with every movement.
"Remember where we are today, Kae," Vance murmured softly, his eyes flicking up to lock onto Kaelen’s. "At Sterling Enterprises, I am your boss. You address me as Mr. Sterling. You follow every instruction I give you without hesitation or backtalk. If you misbehave in public..." Vance tightened the tie knot slightly, cutting off Kaelen’s breath for a brief, thrilling second, "...I will discipline you in private. Do you understand?"
Kaelen swallowed hard, his throat tight, his gaze trapped in Vance’s unyielding stare. "Yes, Mr. Sterling," he forced out, the words tasting like sweet poison on his tongue.
"Good boy," Vance whispered, patting Kaelen’s cheek gently before stepping back. "Let's go."
The headquarters of Sterling Enterprises was an imposing, seventy-story glass skyscraper towering over the financial district.
When Vance’s black sports car pulled into the executive underground parking bay, three security guards immediately straightened up, bowing their heads as Vance stepped out. Kaelen followed, holding a leather briefcase, feeling the heavy, curious stares of the staff as Vance led him straight toward the private executive elevator.
As they rode up to the top floor, the atmosphere transformed entirely. Vance was no longer the ruthless captor of the penthouse or the deadly gunman of the underground club, he was the master of a multi-billion-dollar empire. Employees they passed in the sprawling glass hallways practically scrambled to get out of his way, whispering in hushed, reverent tones as Vance walked past with a cold, terrifying authority.
"Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Vance’s head secretary, a polished woman in her fifties named Marcus, greeted them as they reached the corner office suite. "The board of directors is assembling in Conference Room A for the morning yield review. Mr. Arthur Sterling has already arrived."
Kaelen’s heart did a sudden, violent flip. Arthur.
"Thank you, Marcus," Vance said smoothly, not breaking his stride as he pushed open the heavy frosted-glass doors to his massive corner office. "Prepare the quarterly briefs for the board. Kaelen will assist you."
Vance walked inside, and Kaelen followed, the doors closing silently behind them.
The office was massive, wrapped in panoramic glass windows overlooking the entire city. A massive mahogany desk sat in the center, flanked by leather couches and private side rooms.
"Sit at the side desk," Vance instructed, gesturing to a smaller, elegant glass desk situated directly across from his own, positioning Kaelen right in his direct line of sight. "You will review these corporate ledgers. Highlight any discrepancies in the European shipping logs."
Kaelen sat down, settling into the leather chair. For the next three hours, they worked in high-tension silence. The only sounds in the room were the clicking of keyboards and the soft rustle of paper. Yet, every time Kaelen looked up, he found Vance’s heavy, hazel gaze locked onto him from across the room, tracking his every breath with an agonizingly steamy intensity.
Around noon, the heavy double doors of the office swung open without warning.
Arthur Sterling stepped into the room, his graying hair combed back, wearing an expensive pinstripe suit. His cold, calculating eyes swept past Vance and landed squarely on Kaelen.
A look of deep, patronizing disgust crossed Arthur’s face.
"So," Arthur barked out, stepping further into the room, his heavy cane thudding against the hardwood floor. "The thief decides to grace us with his presence."
Kaelen’s hands clenched into tight fists beneath his glass desk, his jaw locking tight as he forced himself not to react.
"Arthur," Vance greeted smoothly, leaning back in his executive leather chair, his posture relaxed yet radiating absolute control. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"
"I came to see if this boy is actually earning his keep, or if he’s just wasting more of your money," Arthur spat, walking over to Kaelen’s desk and leaning down, his cold eyes digging into Kaelen’s face. "You should be rotting in a cell for what you tried to steal from your mother’s foundation, Kaelen. You’re a disgrace to the Sterling name."
Kaelen felt a white-hot flare of humiliation and anger burn in his chest, but before he could speak, Vance’s voice cut through the air like a razor blade.
"That's enough, Father."
The room temperature dropped ten degrees.
Arthur paused, turning his head to look at Vance in surprise. Vance stood up slowly from behind his desk, his broad frame casting a towering shadow over the room. His expression was completely blank, but his eyes were blazing with a terrifying, protective rage that made Arthur stiffen.
"Kaelen’s debt is owed to me now," Vance said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone that left zero room for argument. "His punishment is my responsibility. His time is my property. You will not speak to my assistant like that in my office again."
Arthur stared at Vance for a long, tense moment, a flicker of shock passing through his eyes at Vance’s sharp defense. "He’s a criminal, Vance."
"He is mine," Vance growled softly, stepping out from behind his desk and walking over, placing a large, possessive hand heavily on Kaelen’s shoulder, squeezing firmly. "And as long as he works under me, you will address him with the respect due to an executive officer of this company. Is that clear?"
Arthur’s jaw tightened, but seeing the unyielding, lethal look in Vance’s eyes, he offered a stiff, bitter nod. "The board meeting starts in ten minutes, Vance. Don't be late."
Without another word, Arthur turned on his heel and marched out of the office, slamming the frosted glass doors behind him.
Silence returned to the room, thick and suffocating.
Kaelen sat frozen in his chair, feeling the intense, burning heat of Vance’s hand still resting heavily on his shoulder. He looked up, staring into Vance’s hazel eyes.
"Why did you do that?" Kaelen whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "You told him I was a thief in the first place."
Vance didn't answer right away. His hand slid slowly up from Kaelen’s shoulder, his long fingers cupping the side of Kaelen’s neck, his thumb stroking gently over Kaelen’s rapid pulse point. He leaned down, his face inches from Kaelen’s, his breath hot against Kaelen’s lips.
"I allowed him to think you were a thief so I could keep you safe, Kae," Vance whispered, his dark voice laced with an undeniable, intoxicating possessiveness that made Kaelen’s core throb with sudden, unbearable desire. "But nobody gets to humiliate you except me. Nobody gets to make you bleed except me."
Vance’s thumb pressed firmly against Kaelen’s lower lip, pulling it down slightly as his eyes burned into Kaelen’s.
"Do you understand what you are to me now, Kaelen?" Vance purred darkly, his gaze dropping to Kaelen’s mouth. "You belong to me. And I tear apart anyone who tries to touch what’s mine.”
