NEON SIGNS

 (Aaron’s POV)

“What are we doing here?” I asked, looking at the building like it was a maximum security prison. The green neon sign of what we're obviously two women rubbing on themselves winked at us and I quickly looked away.

To Kyle's credit, he did look sheepish and slightly embarrassed. He should have. A strip club?

“Okay so, I was thinking—”

“Were you?” I cut in, glancing at the building. It was still there, just as it had been a few seconds ago.

“Yes,” Kyle said, rubbing his neck. “I was thinking about how repressed you've forced yourself to be even though you've been wanting to lose it since last year.”

“Kyle!” I groaned, burying my head in my hands. My face was red, I knew it, and I felt a hot sting of shame.

“What?” Kyle responded, whispering for some reason. “It's true.”

It really was your own people that knew how best to mortify you. “Well yeah, I started hesitantly, “but—”

“But nothing!” Kyle cut in, his face beginning to redden too. “Just because you're gay doesn't mean you don't deserve to get some too.”

God of mercy.

I groaned again, my face going back to hide in my hands. How had I ended up here, discussing my lack of action with my best friend? And how could I dissolve into nothingness to escape it?

“And this is the best way! I've thought about everything.”

“Oh really?” I mumbled from behind my hands.

“Yes, really,” he said enthusiastically. “It’s very discreet, I made sure. My browser history will convince my phone to show me gay p**n for months to come but I don't care.”

“What were— you know what, never mind.”

“And I've already paid for everything,” he continued. “There was an option to use cash at their front desk and that's what I did.”

I shook my head. “My parents would kill me.”

“Your parents will never find out,” he said, pulling my hands away from my face. “And besides, I don't think they would. They fucking love you.”

I disagreed. Mom and Dad were hardcore Christians and I knew they considered homosexual a cardinal sin. It was even above getting addicted to drugs, I was sure.

“They think we're at your house. What if they call your parents?”

“My parents aren't home. So if they call we can just say we're at my house.”

I stared at him, my mouth open. “This is insane!”

Here, Kyle paused, the bright green lights reflected in his brown eyes. “Just try it,” he said quietly. “If you don't like it, I have a back up gift.”

I glanced back up at the building. This couldn't be real. Maybe today was so horrible I was actually still laying down in the infirmary, thinking I was awake when I wasn't. Maybe this was all a dream.

My mind rolled over to thoughts of Jack, and what he did to me today. I sighed, my hands shaking in both fear and anger. Was it a crime to not want to be bullied at school?

I hated him, hated him with a passion.

He’d always been a thorn in my side, a thorn in everyone’s side who he deemed lesser.

And they still worshiped him. No doubt because of his parents' money but also because of… him. I couldn’t deny what he was; a golden boy projected to soar higher and higher.

He was tall, blond and, objectively, gorgeous. He was a powerhouse on the field, playing his sport in an explosive, dynamic way. Watching him was an activity that demanded all your attention.

And now I had to watch my back in school even more because he was convinced I spiked his food somehow.

I sighed. This could be a good way to wind down, and besides… Kyle had been right about me wanting to have sex. I'd just had the good sense to not attempt it with anybody at school.

“Don't be nervous. I made sure to ask for their youngest man. He's just months older than eighteen and he's willing to do anything you want. I told them today was your eighteenth birthday by the way.”

“Kyle!”

“What?” he said, pushing his hair back, “I don't think they take minors. I got you someone in your age range, didn’t I!”

I let out a deep shuddering breath, thoughts flying around a mile a minute in my head. I couldn't deny that I was now curious, very curious. “I can leave if I want to, right?”

Kyle nodded. “Immediately.”

I pondered it for a moment, not factoring the steady growing peal of excitement in my chest. All things considered, it seemed like there was only one cool and exciting decision to take, one I'd giggle about for years to come.

At worst, it would be an experience that led to introspection. And, at best…

I swallowed, groaning. “Is… is he hot?”

Kyle grinned, like I was doing him a favour by agreeing to go in there and get fucked. “I actually don't know,” he said, “they wear masks. Like I said, discreet. But I know you like them rippled so I made sure of that.”

Oh God.

I shook my head, beginning to get embarrassed all over again at the thought of Kyle flipping through a catalog of men, clinically peering at their bodies to make sure it would be something I’d like. He was a good friend, though, no doubt. It was an unorthodox gift, but a thoughtful one.

“Which reminds me.”

He leaned forward and opened the glove compartment, reaching into it. He pulled out a fluffy mass of white and red and handed one to me.

It was a mask, mostly red with black lining the edges. I looked up at him, questioning, even though I was beginning to understand.

“Put that on,” he confirmed, placing a plain white mask over his eyes. “I thought you too might like the anonymity. His name is Jay.”

I looked at him, waiting and glanced at the soft, bendy object in my hand. I could just go home, I could… I didn't need to do this.

But where was the fun in that?

I placed the mask over my eyes, my tongue darting out to wet my lip, as my heart pounded to a furious rhythm in my chest.

“Let's go in?” Kyle asked, reaching out to turn off the engine.

I nodded. “Let's go in.”

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   JUST A FRIEND

AARON'S POVHeat rushed to my face almost immediately.“Fuck,” I muttered under my breath again.Of all moments for Chloe to send something like that.I stared at the picture for another second before quickly locking my phone and shoving it back into my pocket hastily. My chest suddenly tightened in a strange way and the tiny storage room somehow felt even smaller than before.I couldn’t bring myself to look directly at Jay which honestly made no sense. Chloe wasn’t my girlfriend. She was literally ‘just a friend’ at my house because we planned to study together. That was all, there was nothing romantic about it.But somehow, standing in a dark cramped storage room with Jay after he had just seen a girl sitting comfortably in my house wearing my shirt felt strangely embarrassing. And I hated that it mattered.Outside, the screaming had reduced slightly and the heavy footsteps weren’t as constant anymore making the silence between us stretch awkwardly.I swallowed before finally forci

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   TINY ROOM

AARON’S POVThe screams became louder with every step Jay took. The word “cops” was still ringing in my head, but nothing about the way people were running felt normal. Jay’s hand never left my wrist. He kept pulling me forward through the crowd like he already knew where he was going. People kept bumping into us, pushing past, shouting, falling over chairs, but his grip didn’t loosen once. And somehow that was the strangest part of everything.Even in all that chaos, he was steady. I could feel my arm being dragged through the mess, but I also noticed how careful he was not to let go of me even for a second, like if he did, I would get swallowed by the crowd completely.I didn’t understand why that mattered so much to him.We turned sharply into a narrow hallway behind the stage area and the noise reduced slightly.Jay pushed open a small door at the end.The room was too tiny. Shelves lined the walls, stacked with random boxes and cables. There was barely space to stand properly. I

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   CLUB RAID

AARON'S POVThe doorbell rang just as I finished arranging my notes on the center table. I glanced at the clock briefly before walking toward the door.Chloe stood outside the moment I opened it, holding her backpack against her chest while cold evening air rushed in behind her.“You look frozen,” I said immediately.“I told you the weather was annoying today,” she muttered while stepping inside quickly. “Your street is somehow colder than every other street in this city.”I laughed softly and shut the door behind her. She dropped her bag carefully beside the couch before pulling off her coat. “Please tell me you actually read the chapters we agreed on.”“I did.”She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “You’re lying.”“I’m not.”“You paused before answering.”I rolled my eyes while walking back toward the table. “Sit down and stop stressing me.”Chloe smiled before joining me on the rug near the table. She immediately started bringing out books and highlighters from her bag.“For the reco

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   COLD PALMS

JACK'S POVEarlier, I had received another text from the anonymous number.“Log into the Social Director’s account and wipe every video of Alex from the school blog. Do that… and the picture never leaves me.”I read the message twice before locking my phone and shoving it back into my pocket. At this point, whoever this person was had stopped sounding like a normal blackmailer. He was interfering.I walked down the hallway slowly, my jaw tight while my thoughts kept turning over themselves. Why the hell were they so obsessed with protecting Alex?First, at the alley, when I was dealing with Alex because he had ignored my warning and decided to mess with Aaron anyway, the anonymous texter had interfered. Then today, he wanted the videos erased too like he actually cared what happened to him.It was suspicious.I pushed open the stairwell door roughly and started heading downstairs.Could it be Alex himself? The thought crossed my mind again even though I had already ruled it out befo

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   SOCIAL DIRECTOR OFFICE

AARON'S POVFencing practice was the only thing that had felt normal all day. The moment I stepped onto the strip and tightened my grip around the foil, my head finally started clearing a little. Coach blew the whistle lightly from the side as my opponent lunged first.I stepped aside quickly and countered before he could recover properly.“Point.”A few people groaned from the benches while I pulled my mask off halfway to breathe.“Again,” Coach said immediately.By the third round, my opponent was visibly frustrated.“You’re getting distracted too easily,” I told him while adjusting my glove.“Says the guy that almost got kicked off the scholarship list last week,” he muttered.I rolled my eyes. “Focus on the match.”Coach snorted quietly from the side. The next round started almost immediately, and this time I moved faster. He lunged forward as I took two steps backward and countered the attack, barely grazing his side.“Point,” Coach called again.A few minutes later, practice f

  • PAY TO BREAK ME   NIGHT READING

AARON'S POVThe moment we stepped out of the principal’s office, the tension followed us into the hallway. No one spoke.Jack walked beside me for a few seconds before moving slightly ahead like he didn’t even notice I was there anymore. His hands were shoved inside his pockets and his expression looked the same as always—calm, and slightly irritated.I slowed down eventually, letting him create distance between us without trying to stop him.Honestly, I didn’t even know what I would’ve said if we ended up talking.“Hey, thanks for not ruining my life?”Hell, no. I'll probably be six feet deep before I get to complete that sentence. My fingers tightened slightly around the folder in my hand as I exhaled quietly. At least it was over now.My name was back on the scholarship list and the entire drug accusation thing had finally been cleared properly. For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe again without constantly feeling anxious.Still, my thoughts drifted back toward
