"Emilia, why are you still standing there? You have been there for a while now. Don't you want your money back?"
The voice belonged to my ex-husband's father, a heavyset man whose shirt buttons strained across his stomach. He was calling me again, louder this time. I was only supposed to collect my money and leave. Rui himself had told me to get it back through his father, as though I were a stranger asking for a favor instead of the woman who had been his wife. Now his father was shouting my name across the room, and every part of me wanted to shout back. But I could not. I swallowed my anger, straightened my face into a smile, and answered sweetly, "Yes, Darling. I'm just getting myself ready." The word tasted bitter in my mouth. Saying it was irritating, but it was part of my plan. Rui would get exactly what he deserved, and soon. Until then, I would simply pretend to be interested. I turned back to the mirror and stared at my own reflection. My face looked calm, almost polite, as if nothing was wrong. Only my eyes gave me away. They were red and tired, and they carried a pain I could not hide. As I held my own gaze, the memories rushed in, carrying me back to a few days earlier. ____ Tears fell onto the screen of my phone as I watched my husband stand beside the woman he always called his best friend. He was smiling. He lifted a microphone to his lips, and in front of a cheering crowd, he announced that he would soon be getting married to the woman at his side. A sharp pain tore through my chest. I pressed my hand against it, as if that could hold me together, but my tears only fell faster. I was ashamed, humiliated, and heartbroken all at once, and I was standing in the middle of my workplace. One of my colleagues let out a strange, mocking laugh. "I told you your husband would betray you, but you wouldn't listen." She laughed again, as though my pain were entertainment. "Blah, blah, blah. Please, stop it," Clara snapped at her. "Can't you see she is crying?" Then she turned to me and softened her voice. "Emilia, let's go outside." I glanced at the package on my desk, the one I was supposed to deliver that evening. I knew I would not be able to do it. My eyes were blurry, and Rui's words were still echoing painfully in my chest. "Clara, please take the package for me," I whispered. "I'm leaving." I hurried away from the stares of my colleagues. Some faces glowed with satisfaction. Others were filled with pity. I could not decide which was worse. I ran out of the building and kept running. Outside, the rain had begun to fall, and it washed my tears away as quickly as they came. My vision blurred, and the street seemed to melt around me. Then I crashed into someone. It was a man. I could tell from the cut of his suit that it was expensive, nothing like the ordinary clothes people wore in this part of town. But I could not see his face clearly through the rain and my tears. "I'm so sorry, sir!" I said, my voice breaking. His belongings had scattered across the wet ground, and I bent down to gather them with trembling hands. Before I could finish, he gently touched my fingers. "Don't worry, dear," he said quietly. "Just go." He did not scold me. He did not yell. In the middle of the worst day of my life, his kindness felt almost unreal. I nodded, unable to speak, and walked away. I did not go far. I stopped on the road near my home and stood in the rain, letting it soak my hair and my clothes. My whole body shivered, but I did not move. I was punishing myself for believing in Rui, for loving him, for trusting him with everything I had. "I don't deserve this!" I screamed, lifting my face to the sky. I did not care if the neighbors heard me. I did not care about anything. Then a familiar figure appeared through the rain. It was my sister, Violet. She ran toward me, wrapped her arms around my shoulders, and pulled me inside. "Emilia, please don't do this to yourself," she begged. "You are only hurting yourself." I folded my arms around my body, still dripping and shaking. "Please stop crying," she said softly. "Forget about him now, okay? You are strong." She held my cold hands in hers and helped me to my feet. "Come, take a warm bath and go to sleep. Even if you don't feel like going to work tomorrow, you must rest." I looked at her. The pity in her eyes was almost too much to bear. Violet helped me recover enough to sit upright on my bed. I stared at her blankly. I already knew my eyes were swollen from crying, so there was no need for her to say it. Then the bedroom door swung open. Standing there was our younger sister, Mia. She covered her mouth with her palm. I knew she was smiling beneath it, even though she was pretending to be shocked. Slowly, she lifted her hand and pointed at me. "Emilia, I told you," she said. "You placed all your trust in him and left me aside." She folded her arms and tilted her head. "He even told me that he liked me and wanted to have something with me." "What?" Violet shouted, jumping to her feet. I did not have the strength to react the way she did. I simply stared at Mia.I stared at my mother and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Mother, you don't have to read those." She moved back a little, her eyes filling with worry. "Is this what you went through while you were staying with Rui? These are things you should never have to endure, no matter what." "I know that now, I didn't realize how far it had gone until it was already too late." "Emilia, why did you put up with all of this?" She placed a trembling hand on my head, and I could see the disappointment in her face. "Mom, please. It's nothing now. I only did all that because I loved him, but not anymore." I tried to convince her not to dwell on it. Eventually, I let the subject drop, though the pain of those papers lingered in the room long after we stopped speaking. The next morning, I went to work as usual, but this time I found myself spending more time with my boss. He had ordered me to accompany him to the shopping mall, and I was surprised by how relaxed the trip felt. "Let's see how th
"Here you are."The words came from behind me, followed by slow, mocking claps. I stopped with my hand on the gate, my body stiffening before my mind caught up. I knew that voice. I had listened to it for eight years. When I turned, Rui was standing a few steps away, his hands still moving together, a thin smile on his face."Please, Rui," I said. "Not today. Not here."I turned to leave, but he caught my arm and lifted it above my head, as if I were a thief he had caught in the act. Then he shoved me away. I stumbled back, my wrist throbbing where his fingers had dug in."You have the nerve to tie my father to a bed?" he said. "How dare you, after the extra fifty thousand dollars I gave you?"The words hurt more than the shove.Fifty thousand dollars. That was the price he had put on eight years of my life; the dreams I put aside, the nights I waited up for him, the insults I swallowed to keep our home together. I searched his eyes for any trace of guilt or worry and found none. H
"Mom, it isn't what you think," I said, my voice unsteady. "I didn't put on that dress willingly. It's complicated, but you have nothing to worry about." "Don't tell me you went to see Rui," Mia cut in. I stared at her. She had the audacity to say that after hiding the fact that Rui had been asking her out. My chest tightened. "What?" I said. "I'm only being concerned." "What?" Mia kept pushing, question after question, until my patience finally snapped. "Why did you keep it from me that Rui asked you out? Why, Mia?" Shock washed over my mother's face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first. "You wouldn't have believed me," Mia said quietly. "And I thought you would have learned to listen by now." "How could you say that?" I whispered. The words stung more than I wanted to admit. Mia twisted her fingers together and looked away, unable to meet my eyes. "Enough!" my mother cried from behind us. The room fell silent. I was upset with Mia for the scene
I tore myself away from the bed, and the relief that rushed through me was so sharp it almost hurt. Behind me, Gerald was begging. I pretended not to hear him. My hands trembled as I snatched up the briefcase and pulled it open. The cash was still there, clean and untouched. I stared at it, my chest tightening. It was my own money, and he had tried to turn it into a price for my body. The thought made me feel sick. "Emilia, you can't just leave me here," Gerald said, scrambling off the bed. "I'll talk to Rui. I'll make him take you back." When I didn't answer, his voice sharpened. "Stop playing deaf. I mean what I said." Something inside me snapped. I turned to face him, and my voice came out steadier than I felt. "Rui has already made his decision, and I don't need your help. Did you hear yourself? You want me to give you something in return for my own money." His face twisted, and he began to shout. I didn't wait to hear what he said. There was no time to change, so I ra
I wanted to call Clara or Ethan for help, but I didn't want to disturb them. They had problems of their own, and for once I needed to handle something by myself. If Gerald planned to play games with me, he would get exactly what he deserved. I stopped in front of room 442 and knocked. The door opened almost immediately. Gerald, stood there in a black coat, looking far too pleased with himself. He stepped aside and gestured for me to enter, but I stayed where I was. "Come in," he said. "I didn't come here to play games," I replied, holding my voice steady. "Just give me what I came for." "Not if you stay out there. I can't hand you the briefcase in the corridor." He smiled. "I mean no harm, Emilia." I didn't believe him for a second, but I walked in anyway. Behind me, the lock clicked, and the sound ran down my spine like cold water. When I looked at him again, his expression had changed. His eyes crawled over me, slow and hungry, and I understood exactly what he had want
I turned toward Rui, my hands trembling as I pointed straight at him. "You planned this." Then I faced the lawyer, my voice shaking with disbelief. "You know perfectly well you can't accuse me like this. It's only a recording. Anyone could have edited it, or created something like it from scratch." My throat tightened as the pain settled deeper inside me. I couldn't shake the feeling that Rui had planned everything from the very beginning. Perhaps he had even paid the lawyer to help carry out his scheme. Rui, however, showed no sign of concern. He simply clicked the recording again, and the same voice filled the room. Then he looked directly into my eyes. "Listen carefully, Emilia. It's your voice." I knew then that there was nothing more to say. I could not control what Rui chose to believe, and if he had already decided against me, no argument would change his mind. So I picked up my bag and walked out without looking back. As the door closed behind me, I could hear the murm
