Violet tried to calm me down.

"Don't listen to what she is saying," she whispered.

She tried to push Mia out of the room. But Mia kept shouting.

"I should show Emilia! So she can see for herself!"

Violet brushed her off. She said Mia was only making up stories. I knew better. Deep down, Violet believed her. She just acted otherwise so I would not be triggered.

I tried not to be hurt by Mia's words. I told myself I would face her at the right time. When I was strong enough.

That night, I barely slept.

Morning came with bright sunshine. I dressed for work, even though Violet begged me not to go.

"You need rest, Emilia," she said.

"If I don't work, how will I pay back the loans?" I replied.

She had no answer for that.

I walked downstairs to get a cup of coffee. On my way back, I noticed two familiar faces sitting on the sofa. It was Clara and Ethan, my colleagues. They were sitting close together, looking worried.

I frowned. "Why are you both here? You should be at work."

"You need to calm down," Clara said. She turned to face me. "You need to hear this."

My heart began to race.

"Nora bought the workplace," Ethan said quietly.

For a moment, I said nothing.

Then it all made sense. I knew she had done it on purpose. That woman had taken my husband. Apparently, that was not enough for her. Now she wanted my job too.

My mind went blank. Everything faded around me. I forgot where I was. I forgot Clara and Ethan. I slipped into a memory I wished I could erase.

---

It was a quiet night. Rui and I were lying together in bed.

"I really need to start my business," he said softly. "But I don't have a dime. I can't even afford the equipment."

He turned and looked into my eyes.

"You look so beautiful tonight," he smiled.

I smiled back. I always did.

"I'm not asking for money right now," he continued. "You have already done too much. You bought me a car. You paid my medical bills alone. You changed my life."

He paused.

"But I was thinking about the money your father left you. We have already spent a lot of it."

He said "we." But I knew the truth. Most of that money had gone to him.

"How much do you need?" I asked.

"Close to ninety thousand dollars."

I was shocked. It was a huge amount. Any sensible woman would have stopped and thought.

But I did not.

I was a girl in love. I believed that when he finally made it, he would keep his promises. I decided to give him the money. My father's money. My share of his fortune.

"Fine," I said at last. "I will give it to you."

Rui rolled over to my side of the bed. He was almost screaming with joy.

"Really? I love you so much! Where will I ever find a woman like you?"

He kissed my hands.

"I will buy you a big, luxurious house. You deserve it. I will buy you the big ship you always dreamed of. We will fly to places we have never been. And I will start a company in your name."

It is irritating now. I believed every word. They were worthless, empty promises.

A few weeks later, something felt wrong.

Rui had gone to work that morning. But that night, he came home very late. The clock was almost striking midnight.

He looked tired. He looked rough.

He lay on the bed without a word. He did not even look at me.

Later, I noticed something red on the floor. I picked it up.

It was a pair of red panties.

My hands began to shake.

"Rui," I said sharply. "What is this?"

He was shocked when he saw it. For a few seconds, he could not speak.

Then he said, "I bought it."

"You bought it?" I stared at him. "Where? Without a package?"

He gave no clear answer.

I asked myself the same question again and again. Where did he buy it?

I did not sleep that night.

___

"Emilia!"

A hand tapped my back.

I jumped. It was Ethan. His voice had pulled me back to reality.

"Look at me," he said gently. "You are lost in thought again."

Clara took my arm and helped me stand.

"I suggest we go and see Rui," she said firmly.

Ethan agreed. "You have to. You can't pay this loan alone. He owes you."

I shook my head. "There is no need. I don't think I can look at his face."

"Yes, you can," Clara said. "You will show Rui what he deserves."

Her words stayed with me.

Later that day, I found myself standing in front of Rui's house.

It was not a house. It was a mansion. Tall gates. Clean white walls. Perfect gardens.

It belonged to Nora.

We entered the compound and walked up to the main door. A maid opened it and blocked our way.

"Ma, sir, please," she pleaded. "I have not taken permission."

"We have already spoken with him," Ethan said calmly.

It was a lie. But the maid was too nervous to argue. She stepped aside.

We waited in the large living room. The marble floor was spotless. The chandelier above us sparkled. I felt small standing there.

Then I heard footsteps.

Rui came down the stairs. He was still in his nightwear. His hair was messy, and he looked relaxed.

I waited for him to smile at me. I waited for the old look in his eyes. The one that used to call me a precious gem.

It never came.

He looked at me like a stranger. Like a random woman who had walked in from the street.

That hurt more than anything.

Then Nora appeared behind him.

She wore light, revealing underwear. She walked with confidence, like the queen of the house. She stood close to Rui and folded her arms.

Her eyes moved slowly over each of us. She studied me from head to toe.

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavy.

Then Nora tilted her head and said calmly:

"We don't need bad energy here."

I stared at my mother and placed my hands on her shoulders. "Mother, you don't have to read those." She moved back a little, her eyes filling with worry. "Is this what you went through while you were staying with Rui? These are things you should never have to endure, no matter what." "I know that now, I didn't realize how far it had gone until it was already too late." "Emilia, why did you put up with all of this?" She placed a trembling hand on my head, and I could see the disappointment in her face. "Mom, please. It's nothing now. I only did all that because I loved him, but not anymore." I tried to convince her not to dwell on it. Eventually, I let the subject drop, though the pain of those papers lingered in the room long after we stopped speaking. The next morning, I went to work as usual, but this time I found myself spending more time with my boss. He had ordered me to accompany him to the shopping mall, and I was surprised by how relaxed the trip felt. "Let's see how th

"Here you are."The words came from behind me, followed by slow, mocking claps. I stopped with my hand on the gate, my body stiffening before my mind caught up. I knew that voice. I had listened to it for eight years. When I turned, Rui was standing a few steps away, his hands still moving together, a thin smile on his face."Please, Rui," I said. "Not today. Not here."I turned to leave, but he caught my arm and lifted it above my head, as if I were a thief he had caught in the act. Then he shoved me away. I stumbled back, my wrist throbbing where his fingers had dug in."You have the nerve to tie my father to a bed?" he said. "How dare you, after the extra fifty thousand dollars I gave you?"The words hurt more than the shove.Fifty thousand dollars. That was the price he had put on eight years of my life; the dreams I put aside, the nights I waited up for him, the insults I swallowed to keep our home together. I searched his eyes for any trace of guilt or worry and found none. H

"Mom, it isn't what you think," I said, my voice unsteady. "I didn't put on that dress willingly. It's complicated, but you have nothing to worry about." "Don't tell me you went to see Rui," Mia cut in. I stared at her. She had the audacity to say that after hiding the fact that Rui had been asking her out. My chest tightened. "What?" I said. "I'm only being concerned." "What?" Mia kept pushing, question after question, until my patience finally snapped. "Why did you keep it from me that Rui asked you out? Why, Mia?" Shock washed over my mother's face. Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first. "You wouldn't have believed me," Mia said quietly. "And I thought you would have learned to listen by now." "How could you say that?" I whispered. The words stung more than I wanted to admit. Mia twisted her fingers together and looked away, unable to meet my eyes. "Enough!" my mother cried from behind us. The room fell silent. I was upset with Mia for the scene

I tore myself away from the bed, and the relief that rushed through me was so sharp it almost hurt. Behind me, Gerald was begging. I pretended not to hear him. My hands trembled as I snatched up the briefcase and pulled it open. The cash was still there, clean and untouched. I stared at it, my chest tightening. It was my own money, and he had tried to turn it into a price for my body. The thought made me feel sick. "Emilia, you can't just leave me here," Gerald said, scrambling off the bed. "I'll talk to Rui. I'll make him take you back." When I didn't answer, his voice sharpened. "Stop playing deaf. I mean what I said." Something inside me snapped. I turned to face him, and my voice came out steadier than I felt. "Rui has already made his decision, and I don't need your help. Did you hear yourself? You want me to give you something in return for my own money." His face twisted, and he began to shout. I didn't wait to hear what he said. There was no time to change, so I ra

I wanted to call Clara or Ethan for help, but I didn't want to disturb them. They had problems of their own, and for once I needed to handle something by myself. If Gerald planned to play games with me, he would get exactly what he deserved. I stopped in front of room 442 and knocked. The door opened almost immediately. Gerald, stood there in a black coat, looking far too pleased with himself. He stepped aside and gestured for me to enter, but I stayed where I was. "Come in," he said. "I didn't come here to play games," I replied, holding my voice steady. "Just give me what I came for." "Not if you stay out there. I can't hand you the briefcase in the corridor." He smiled. "I mean no harm, Emilia." I didn't believe him for a second, but I walked in anyway. Behind me, the lock clicked, and the sound ran down my spine like cold water. When I looked at him again, his expression had changed. His eyes crawled over me, slow and hungry, and I understood exactly what he had want

  • PHENOMENAL: After Everything    Chapter 5: Room 422

I turned toward Rui, my hands trembling as I pointed straight at him. "You planned this." Then I faced the lawyer, my voice shaking with disbelief. "You know perfectly well you can't accuse me like this. It's only a recording. Anyone could have edited it, or created something like it from scratch." My throat tightened as the pain settled deeper inside me. I couldn't shake the feeling that Rui had planned everything from the very beginning. Perhaps he had even paid the lawyer to help carry out his scheme. Rui, however, showed no sign of concern. He simply clicked the recording again, and the same voice filled the room. Then he looked directly into my eyes. "Listen carefully, Emilia. It's your voice." I knew then that there was nothing more to say. I could not control what Rui chose to believe, and if he had already decided against me, no argument would change his mind. So I picked up my bag and walked out without looking back. As the door closed behind me, I could hear the murm
