Lana's POV.

Hearing that from my son gave me goosebumps all over my body. I was not expecting that from him, and I wondered why he acted that way. He has not acted this way ever since I gave birth to him.

He had been in a coma for hours, hours that stretched into something closer to eternity for me, sitting by his bedside, counting every breath the machines forced into his chest, and I was being careful about how to respond to him so that it would not worsen the situation.

Lana's POV.Hearing that from my son gave me goosebumps all over my body. I was not expecting that from him, and I wondered why he acted that way. He has not acted this way ever since I gave birth to him.He had been in a coma for hours, hours that stretched into something closer to eternity for me, sitting by his bedside, counting every breath the machines forced into his chest, and I was being careful about how to respond to him so that it would not worsen the situation."Jacob," I said gently, leaning over him. "You're awake, baby. Thank God, you're awake."He blinked at me, then stared at me for some seconds before casting his eyes on Greta again. His face changed.I had never seen that expression on him before. Not once since he was born. His jaw tightened, his eyes narrowed, and something like fear or was it hatred? flashed across his features so fast I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it."Get her out," he said. His voice was low, but there was an edge to it I didn't recogn

  • PREGNANT AND BANISHED    Chapter 63

Lana's POVThe moment I turned from Jacob's bed, his brothers crashed into me like a wave breaking against rock. Small arms wrapped around my waist, my legs, anywhere they could reach, all three of them holding on as though I had been gone for years instead of standing three feet away the entire time. I felt their fear in the way their fingers dug into my nightgown, in the way none of them said a word, only held tighter.I gently pried their arms from around me, murmuring that I needed to see to Jacob, that I would come back, that everything would be fine even though I did not believe it myself. My second son let go, reluctant, his eyes wet and enormous in the dark. But my youngest, barely five, would not release me. He clung harder, and when I tried again to loosen his grip, he began to cry, a thin, rising wail that cut straight through the fragile quiet of the room.Asher moved before I could. He crossed to my son and crouched, saying nothing at all, simply resting a hand against th

Lana's POVI didn't tell anyone what was going through my mind. I quickly ran to my children's room.A lot was going through my mind. If the guard was bleeding opposite my children's room, I had to check on them to make sure they were fine. I entered the room, and Jacob and his brothers were fast asleep. The moonlight fell across their small forms in stripes through the shutters, and for one breath, one single mercy of a breath, everything in the room was exactly as it should have been. Jacob's fist curled against his cheek the way it always did when he slept. Beside him, his brothers lay tangled in the same blanket, as though even in sleep they refused to be parted.I walked closer to be sure they were fine.My bare feet made no sound against the nursery floor. I counted their breaths the way I used to count contractions, in, out, in, out, searching each small rise and fall of their chests for anything wrong. Nothing was wrong. Nothing that I could see. And yet the smell of blood fro

Lana’s POV.Asher's eyes stayed fixed on the doorway long after Greta had spoken, his jaw working the way it did whenever his mind moved faster than his mouth would allow. I watched him war with himself, some careful calculation running behind that unreadable expression, weighing whether whatever Greta had to show him was worth abandoning the fragile tenderness of the last few minutes. For a moment I thought he wouldn't move at all. Then, slowly, he rose from beside me, the duvet slipping from where he'd tucked it so carefully against my shoulders. He didn't ask what it was. He never did with Greta; the two of them had an understanding built over decades, a shorthand that didn't need questions to know something was serious.I was on my feet before he'd taken two steps. He glanced back at me, something like protest forming behind his eyes, some instinct to shield me from whatever waited beyond that door. But he knew me well enough by now, or thought he did, to understand that telling m

Lana's POVThe words hung in the air long after the call died, and I understood, with a clarity that turned my blood to ice, that Asher had just said the one thing he could never take back. “My wife.” Not Lana. Not after he rejected me. Not after he chose Amelia over me. Jasper was the only person with me, even during my pregnancy with three sons, and he is the one they know as the father. Calling me his wife has spoiled everything. Then the line had gone dead, and the dead air that followed felt louder than anything that had come before it.My hands were shaking. I felt it before I saw it: a fine, uncontrollable fear that started somewhere behind my ribs and worked its way down through my arms until my fingers wouldn't stay still against my thigh. I pressed them flat to the table, willing them to obey, but the shaking only climbed higher, into my shoulders, my jaw, until I was certain he could see it from across the table, certain he could hear the frantic stutter of my own pulse. As

Lana's POV.I knew that tone. I had heard Asher use it only twice before in all the months I'd lived inside this pack; once when a hunter's trap had caught one of the pack's youngest scouts, and once when he'd discovered a betrayal buried three ranks deep in his own guard. It was a voice that didn't shout, didn't rage, didn't need to. It was quiet the way a mountain goes quiet right before it splits open and swallows a village whole. Fire on the mountain, my grandmother used to call it the calm that comes just before everything burns.I understood, in that instant, that I could not afford to flinch. So I decided to steel myself, to bury the fear climbing up through my chest before it ever reached my face. I lifted my chin. I let my eyes go wide with something close to offense, as though he had accused me of something absurd, something that was not worth consideration."Lana," he said again, and this time he did not look away from me at all, even as he lifted the phone from the table a

Lana's Pov I woke up slowly. For a few seconds, I actually thought I was back in my own bed. I expected to hear the birds outside my window and smell the coffee Jasper always made in the morning. I reached out my hand, expecting to feel the soft sheets of my home. Then, I felt the rough texture

My heart was beating so hard it felt like it would break my ribs. I stood my ground, even though every part of me wanted to run. Asher was standing so close that I could see the tiny flecks of silver in his blue eyes. He looked older and more tired, but he still had that same power that made everyo

Lana’s POV I was struggling to hold back my tears when Amelia’s laughter harsh laughter echoed in the room, sharp and mocking, as if my heartbreak was nothing more than a joke to her. “Oh, Lana, are you really that pathetic?” she sneered. “You’ve always been jealous of me, haven’t you? That’s why

Lana’s POV Pregnant? I was Pregnant? I couldn’t believe it.“Where’s that stupid little bitch?” My stepmother suddenly screamed from across the hall, jolting me back to reality.I looked up in panic as my step mother’s fist began to furiously pound on my bedroom door, almost pulling the hinges off
