LOGINChapter 16
The first thing Daniel noticed was that Alora wasnât talking. Which was strange. Because Alora always talked. Maybe not constantly. Maybe not about important things. But there was always something. A complaint. A joke. A random observation. A dramatic speech about how medical school was actively trying to kill her. Something. Today? Nothing. She sat through the entire lecture with her chin resting on her hand, staring at her notes like they had personally offended her. Daniel watched her from three rows behind. By the end of class, he was certain something was wrong. The problem was figuring out what. Students began packing up. The room filled with movement. Voices. Chairs scraping against the floor. Alora shoved her notebook into her bag and stood. Daniel was beside her before she reached the door. âYou look like youâre planning a murder.â She blinked. âWhat?â âA murder.â He nodded seriously. âMaybe two.â A reluctant smile tugged at her mouth. âThere it is.â âWhat?â âThe smile.â She rolled her eyes. Daniel grinned. For a second, she looked more like herself. Then the smile disappeared again. And Danielâs concern returned. âOkay.â He adjusted his backpack. âWhatâs wrong?â âNothing.â âLiar.â âIâm serious.â âLiar.â âIâm not lying.â âYou are.â Alora sighed dramatically. Daniel waited. Eventually she groaned. âProfessor Reid is annoying.â Interesting. Very interesting. Daniel carefully hid his reaction. âProfessor Reid?â âYes.â âWhat did he do?â âHe exists.â Daniel laughed. Alora immediately pointed at him. âDonât.â âDonât what?â âDonât laugh.â âYou literally said his crime was existing.â âExactly.â Daniel shook his head. âNo jury would convict him for that.â âI would.â âBiased.â âAbsolutely.â Daniel laughed again. This time she smiled. A real one. Small. But real. For some reason that felt like winning. They walked across campus together. Students moved around them. Some rushing to lectures. Others dragging themselves toward the cafeteria. The afternoon sun sat warm above the university buildings. Daniel shoved his hands into his pockets. âSo.â âSo?â âYou gonna tell me what actually happened?â She looked away. Immediately suspicious. Daniel noticed. But didnât push. Instead he waited. Eventually she sighed. âHe kept criticizing everything.â Daniel frowned. âEverything?â âEverything.â âEven when you were right?â âEspecially when I was right.â That surprised him. Professor Reid was many things. Cold. Intimidating. Impossible to read. But unfair? Daniel had never seen that. âMaybe he was having a bad day.â âTwice?â Daniel winced. Okay. Fair point. They continued walking. For a while neither spoke. Then Daniel noticed something. Alora wasnât heading toward her dorm. She was heading toward the bus stop. âYou working today?â She nodded. Daniel looked surprised. âYou have class until six.â âI know.â âAnd work after?â âI know.â âWhen do you sleep?â She pointed at the sky. âGod provides.â Daniel laughed. âNo seriously.â She shrugged. âMy shift starts in thirty minutes.â âWhat shift?â âYou ask too many questions.â âOccupational hazard.â âYouâre not a doctor.â âFuture doctor.â âWorse.â Daniel gasped. âYou wound me.â Alora finally laughed. A proper laugh. The kind that made her eyes brighten. Daniel felt unexpectedly victorious. Like heâd completed some impossible task. They reached the bus stop. Only then did he realize something. He actually didnât know much about her. Not really. He knew she was smart. Funny. Stubborn. Terrible at answering messages. Good under pressure. But not much beyond that. And suddenly he wanted to know. Not in a romantic way. At least thatâs what he told himself. Just curiosity. Normal curiosity. Probably. The bus still hadnât arrived. Daniel sat beside her. âSo where do you work?â She groaned. âWeâre still doing this?â âAbsolutely.â âWhy?â âBecause now Iâm curious.â âCuriosity killed the cat.â âGood thing Iâm not a cat.â She stared. Daniel smiled. Eventually she surrendered. âI work at a bookstore.â Daniel blinked. âA bookstore?â âYes.â âI expected something cooler.â She looked offended. âBooks are cool.â âNo.â âThey are.â âNo.â âThey are.â âNo.â Alora smacked his arm. Daniel laughed. For a moment she forgot about Professor Reid completely. Forgot about the weird tension. Forgot about the frustration. Forgot about everything. And Daniel noticed. Because Daniel noticed things. Not dramatic things. Small things. The way her shoulders relaxed. The way she smiled when she forgot herself. The way she twisted a ring when she was stressed. The way she pretended to be tougher than she actually was. The bus still wasnât coming. Daniel glanced at her. Then frowned. âYou eat lunch?â Alora looked away. Immediately guilty. Daniel sighed. âOh my God.â âWhat?â âYou didnât.â âI was busy.â âYou forgot.â âI didnât forget.â âYou forgot.â She didnât answer. Daniel shook his head. Then stood. âWait here.â âWhat?â âDonât move.â âDanielââ Too late. He was already jogging across the street. Alora watched him disappear into a convenience store. Five minutes later he returned carrying food. She stared. âNo.â âYes.â âNo.â âYes.â âIâm not taking that.â âYou are.â âIâm not.â âYou are.â âIâm not.â Daniel sat beside her and placed the bag in her lap. âEat.â âYouâre annoying.â âI know.â She opened the bag anyway. Because she was starving. Daniel pretended not to notice. Which somehow made it worse. Or better. She wasnât sure. The bus finally arrived. Alora stood. Daniel stood too. âYou donât have to wait.â âI know.â âThen why are you waiting?â He shrugged. The answer was simple. Because he wanted to. But somehow saying that felt strange. So instead he smiled. âJust making sure you get there.â Something warm settled in her chest. Unexpected. Dangerous. Comforting. The bus doors opened. She climbed the steps. Then turned back. Daniel was still standing there. Hands in his pockets. Watching to make sure she got on safely. Like it was the most normal thing in the world. For the first time since sheâd met him, Alora found herself wondering something. Not whether Daniel was nice. She already knew that. Not whether Daniel was attractive. She wasnât blind. No. The question was much worse. When had she started looking forward to seeing him? The bus pulled away. Daniel watched it disappear. Then finally turned. Only to freeze. Across the street. Parked beneath a line of trees. A black car. Expensive. Familiar. Very familiar. And behind the wheelâ Professor Dominic Reid. Daniel stared. The professor wasnât looking at him. Wasnât looking at the road. Wasnât looking anywhere except the bus that had just carried Alora away. Daniel frowned. For a strange moment, something felt off. Not wrong. Not inappropriate. Just⊠Odd. Then the traffic moved. The car drove away. And Daniel was left standing there wondering why the image bothered him at all.The bookstore smelled like paper, dust, and coffee.Alora loved it.Most days.Today she was tired. Her shift had started almost two hours ago, and she was currently crouched on the floor trying to organize a shelf someone had completely destroyed. She was halfway through alphabetizing a row of medical textbooks when a familiar voice spoke above her.âThat looks painful.âAlora looked up.Daniel.Of course. He stood at the end of the aisle holding two books and wearing that annoyingly relaxed smile.Alora groaned.âYou followed me.ââI did not.ââYou absolutely did.ââI came here voluntarily.ââYou donât even read.âDaniel looked offended.âI read.ââNo.ââYes.ââNo.ââYes.âShe pointed at the books in his hands.âWhat are those?âDaniel looked down. Then looked back up.Then sighed.âFine.âAlora burst out laughing.âI knew it.ââThey were near the entrance.ââYou picked random books.ââI panicked.ââYou panicked?ââThere was pressure.ââThere was literally no pressure.ââThere was b

Alora spent the entire walk to class trying not to think about the previous night.Unfortunately, her brain had other plans.Every few minutes she would remember something Daniel had said. Then sheâd smile. Then sheâd immediately become annoyed with herself. Then sheâd smile again. It was a vicious cycle.âYouâre doing it.âAlora groaned.âCassie.ââYou are.ââCassie.ââThe smiling thing.ââIâm not smiling.ââYou absolutely are.âAlora rolled her eyes and pushed open the lecture hall doors. The room was already filling.Students settled into seats.Coffee cups everywhere.Half the class looked sleep-deprived.The other half looked dead.Medical school. As God intended.Cassie dropped into a seat beside her.Alora opened her notebook.Tried focusing.Failed.Her mind drifted back to dinner.Daniel laughing.Daniel telling stories about his sisters.Daniel remembering random things she said.Daniel somehow making two hours feel like twenty minutes. The memory warmed her unexpectedly.A
Alora spent far too much time staring at her closet. It was ridiculous.Completely ridiculous.Daniel had said dinner. Not a date. Not even close to a date.Just dinner.Yet somehow she had already changed outfits three times.âYouâre embarrassing yourself.âAlora looked up.Cassie stood in the doorway holding a bag of chips.âI hate you.ââNo, you donât.âCassie tossed a chip into her mouth.âBlue sweater.ââWhat?ââThe blue sweater.âAlora looked down at the pile of clothes scattered across her bed.âWhy?ââBecause it looks effortless.ââIt took me thirty minutes to find it.ââExactly.âAlora groaned.Cassie laughed.âYou know this is funny, right?ââWhat is?ââThe fact that youâre acting like this over dinner.ââIt is dinner.ââMhm.ââIt is.ââMhm.âAlora grabbed a pillow and threw it.Cassie dodged it easily.Unfortunately.By the time Alora finally left her dorm, she was already five minutes late.Daniel was waiting outside the small restaurant just beyond campus. The moment he s
DominicBy eight oâclock, his coffee had gone cold.Again.Dominic barely noticed.Stacks of assignments covered his desk, separated into neat piles according to tutorial groups. The morning sun spilled through the office windows, catching the edge of polished wood and turning the untouched mug beside his elbow into liquid gold.He reached for the next paper. The handwriting stopped him before the name did.Small.Quick.Sharp slants to the right.Margins filled with neat annotations. His fingers stilled. He didnât need to read the cover page.He already knew whose paper it was.A quiet irritation settled somewhere beneath his ribs.Annoying.He turned it over anyway.Alora Vale.He exhaled slowly.Without reading another line, he placed it beneath the rest of the pile and picked up someone elseâs assignment instead.Mitchell.Average.Predictable.He read two paragraphs.None of it registered. His eyes drifted back to the previous paper.Again.His jaw tightened.Ridiculous.He had g
Alora couldnât stop thinking about the car.It was ridiculous.Entirely ridiculous.Yet three days later she was still thinking about it.Not obsessively. Not constantly.Just enough to annoy herself.Because why would Professor Reid be parked outside her dorm?Maybe heâd been visiting someone.Maybe heâd been meeting another professor.Maybe sheâd imagined it.The last possibility felt unlikely.Unfortunately.âYouâre doing it again.âAlora looked up from her notebook.Cassie was staring at her.âWhat?ââThe thinking thing.ââI donât do a thinking thing.ââYou absolutely do.âAlora groaned. Not Daniel too.Apparently everyone had decided she possessed facial expressions she wasnât aware of.Cassie leaned forward.âWhat are you thinking about?ââNothing.ââLie.ââNothing.ââProfessor Reid?âAlora nearly dropped her pen.âWhat?!âCassie pointed triumphantly.âAha.ââOh my God.ââIâm right.ââNo.ââYouâre absolutely right.âAlora threw a crumpled piece of paper at her.Cassie laughed.T
