WHEN Kate returned to the bedroom, Jan did not join her. She waited for him until dawn, but no Jan came in. She could not understand his sudden change of mood.
She changed into the dress his mother had given her last night and came down for breakfast. Fernan was the only one on the table when she arrived in the living room. Kate cleared her throat to get his attention.

“Good morning, Katherine.” He gestured on the chair across his seat. “Have a seat and join me for breakfast.”
