Ana threw open the doors to her apartment as she stormed into it and threw herself into a gilt chair. Her face was a storm cloud of mixed emotion.
Just her luck that her father and everyone else heard her side of the conversation and none of that asshole’s. Now she’s gone and screwed it all up.
“I’m the one that gets punished when he’s the one that tells me I’m not good enough to marry. Then he gets the bright idea that I can be his mistress. This is not fair in the least. If the emperor thinks, I’ll accept that he’s got another thing coming.” Ana was fuming. “If he thinks I’ll degrade myself like that, then he’s deluding himself. I’ll leave before I do that. I’ll… I’ll turn my back on this place and everyone in it.”
“Princess, I believe your father is avoiding you so that you both can speak after you’re both calmer.”
“Oh, it doesn’t work that way. I can’t believe he wouldn’t hear me out. That was entirely unreasonable.”
“He’s the emperor, and it’s by his will that anyone is allowed to speak. Princess, I… I’m not sure what I can say, but you weren’t the only one to hear his words. I can vouch for having heard his rather insulting remarks.” George tried to find words that would reassure her. “If the emperor will let me speak of this matter to him. I will tell him exactly what I heard and inform him you were defending yourself as much as him from the insulting proposal.”
“I doubt he’ll allow you to even say a word on this matter. If I know him as well as I believe I do. He’ll sail in here, render his verdict on my punishment and then sail out of here, all the while ignoring the fact that he’ll probably be destroying any hope of happiness I might gain. That’s it. Wait here. I need to get out of this dress. Bloody thing is choking me in multiple places. If I have to face a bleak future filled with one disappointment after another, then I will do it in clothing I’m comfortable in.”
“Okay, of course.” Ana grabbed several pieces of clothing from her closet and stepped into her bathroom.
“Dang it. I need help with this stupid dress. I will never understand why they still insist on putting the closures on the back of the dress in this day and age. Can I get you to open the back of my gown?”
That made George pause. He was about to leave to get her lady’s maid, then George realized that the lady’s maid couldn’t enter right now, as per the emperor’s command. “Of course.” As she waited in the doorway of her bathroom, he stepped toward her and swallowed his apprehension. He watched his hands go toward the long row of buttons down the back of the dress. He could smell cinnamon and nutmeg with a hint of blood. George hadn’t eaten yet and her scent made his mouth water as he revealed the graceful pale slope of her back and shoulders. Her throat was so close, and her flesh looked so soft, and pale in the dim light of the room.
“Thank you.” Ana could feel his fiery gaze on her back and she struggled not to let a shiver of excitement become obvious as it made it’s way down her back. His cool hands brushed her ever so slightly. His touch was feather soft as his hands gently glanced over her skin. Once he reached the last button, Ana moved into action and disappeared into the bathroom.
‘That was a mistake.’ Ana thought to herself. Her heartbeat picked up as soon as she felt him so close to her. The smell of leather and burgundy enveloped her quickly. Ana wanted to wrap herself in that scent and explore it. She felt doomed after that to misery.
Her father would take this position from her and give it to someone else. Then reassign him to the new ambassador. Another chance to be free of this place thwarted by her big mouth. Ana could only blame herself for this mess. She should never have let that fool goad her into saying those things. Who knew what the Count would demand in return as restitution? Ana knew the Count wouldn’t waste this opportunity to gain something toward his own agenda and she all but gave it to him. This was another reason the emperor was angry with her and she’d be punished for it.
Ana dropped her dress in a crumpled pile on the floor and took her boots off. Once dressed in her own type of personal uniform, she looked at herself critically in the mirror. With a black tank top on the vines of red roses, tattooed across her left shoulder was visible as she looked at her lean frame. Like most vampires, Ana was on the lean side, but she also had the height which was exceptional in it’s own right. She looked like the emperor, in many ways. Her legs were covered in black fatigues, and she’d put her boots back on.
Red roses from head to toe. She needed her jacket. The emperor despised seeing her tattoos. Ana was sure if she’d been a male, the sight of her tattoos wouldn’t have been an issue for the emperor. So much Ana saw in the mirror was to hide who she truly was.
Her auburn hair fairly burned even in the bright lights of the bathroom. While her skin looked like fresh fallen snow. Or so the poets of old would say.
She had to go out there and get her jacket before the emperor arrived or summoned her. Whatever he decided to do. Ana grabbed her jewellery from the counter and put on a gold pendant that bore the family coat of arms. Ana figured if she was to face this, she’d do it by showing her loyalty. If not, she could take it off and hand in her membership to her family and house.
The electricity that flowed between them, even if we didn’t lock eyes, was there and it went straight to his dick. It was almost a relief when the bathroom door suddenly shut behind her. He had to get himself in order. Her father, the emperor, could appear at any time and the gig would be up before he laid down his punishment on Adriana. The goddess preserve him, this wasn’t fair. He’d never reacted like this to any female before. He had to retract his fangs consciously. Her flesh was just so tempting at that close of range. There was no way she couldn’t feel it. Not by the way she slammed that door. Her scent filled the room, and it did nothing to help him calm down. He had to take himself out to the balcony for fresh air. How was this going to work? They needed boundaries, and one of them was not close contact. That was obvious. Touching Adriana was like touching a live wire. It shocked his system to life, and all he wanted to
Ana came from the bathroom and stopped dead in her tracks. Her father was already there, and he, of course, brought his guards. They didn’t leave his side ever. What disturbed her the most was he was telling the bodyguard her punishment like he had all the control over her. He didn’t spare her a glance. Though he did mutter something about her, being the only daughter he believed wouldn’t fail at this. Ana wasn’t sure if that was a compliment or a threat if she failed. Six months away from this place. Away from her mother and sisters. The snide remarks of courtiers, maybe even away from the prying eyes of everyone. That, she figured, was a little too much to believe. After all, she would have staff from here around her, and she now knew who the bodyguard answered to. It wasn’t her; it was her father. So much for any bond forming there beyond this strange physical need to touch him and be touched. That she could resist and without an emotional bond,
“Ambassador, I would first like to grab a quick bite before we leave, since all this time here is when I should have been having my dinner. I would like to leave on a full stomach.” George didn’t want to be at his worst when he got there and right now, he was starving. For a vampire, that was an awful state to get into. Instincts would heighten and they would make mistakes. Actions best avoided could happen, and judgement could become impaired. “As time is ticking, Edger made that observation to me. I took it under advisement and brought something you could take with you. I wouldn’t advise to take a mage portal on an overly full stomach. It could lead to a rather embarrassing event on the other side. There are overnight bags waiting for you. They were packed while you were at dinner, because it would ease everything because unpacking will take some time that I’m not sure you’ll have once you get there.” Maximus seemed to have an answer for everything, but he hear
Ana watched as George unlocked the large double doors that led from the elevator corridor. They had to go past the delivery room, storage room, and stairwells to other places within the building. He handed Ana one of two key rings that bore all the master keys for their new domain. The Vampiric Empire was moving in today. Someone left the lights on as they entered. The maps were easy to find. They bore details of the entire building, the public areas spread over several floors, and each floor boasted it’s own map. They remembered to add a map that helped them identify where everyone was to be housed. There were two floors, actually. The first floor where they were now, was where Ana would work, and her staff would live. The floor above was where apartments for herself and George were, with another for guests. They found beautifully appointed rooms for working outside of the ruling council’s sitting times. Everything they’d need was there, supplied for them. Or
George finally left to get things done and Ana could relax for a moment or two. What was she going to do here with everything as it was? There were still a few days before the North American Ruling Council would sit for the first time. George said she was the face people would think of before the emperors from now on. Did he know that when he gave her this position? Of course, the emperor knew, or George wouldn’t have a position here. If he wanted her dead, then he would have placed an incompetent fool in George’s place. So, what did the emperor expect her to do? Succeed? Fail? Accept defeat? Ana didn’t have a clue. All she knew was it was difficult having George so close. He embodied temptation and, for a vampire, temptation ran a close second to life’s blood. Irresistible, to say the least. Somehow, the word distraction wasn’t strong enough to describe what she felt. The emperor couldn’t have known there’d be an attractio
Don’t believe everything you see in the movies. Just like the prop guns and fake blood. Vampires don’t die each day. Think of the mess. Just like the body count of the movie monsters, if vampires drained every human, they bit. Ana slept, but it wasn’t good. Her mind kept playing over the common misconceptions. It blended those nightmares with disturbing images of what would happen if she followed temptation. By the fifth time, Ana admitted this was her new hell. George was her fresh fear. She’d dreamed of them being caught in bed together, and dragged in front of the emperor naked for judgement. Of course, he made them an example. He forced her to watch him drain George of his life’s blood, before he punished her. Her sisters laughed at the entire event. Her mother acted relieved. She no longer needed to find someone willing to take Ana. There were other unsavoury nightmares, dealing with lies about her, assassins, and murder pl
George got things settled for tomorrow. He was about to take several things to Adriana when he received a message that she was retiring for the day, and he should as well. They’d pick up tomorrow with the wolf shifter ambassador. That was fine. He wasn’t looking forward to trying to make small talk with Ana. She liked to be called Ana. It was a perfect name for her. It didn’t matter if she tried to put on a tough persona. She was still female, and Ana suited her. George found himself shaking his head as he pulled himself out of his woolgathering about his charge. She was his charge. Ana was part of the elite class, and he wasn’t. He’d never be a member of the elite class. Fawning after her was a one-way trip to the dungeon and torture chamber. A pine box would be what he’d leave there in. There was no way he was prepared for that, and he couldn’t see Ana ever being prepared to accept that fate. But she was a fine woman. Far better than her shallow sis
The door to the main apartment slammed open and George followed Adriana into the space before he slammed the door shut behind him. “I think we need to have an understanding, princess. You will need to be truthful with me.” His face was livid, and his eyes glowed red as he followed behind Adriana. “George, you work for my father, the emperor, not me. I will tell you what I feel you need to know, and not more than that.” She threw her jacket down on a red velvet chaise lounge, before she turned around and set her glare on him. Her own eyes glowed black, her unique green eyes mixed with the red glow of her highly emotional state, and became an eerie black. “Princess, I am here to look after your safety. When you go anywhere, I go with you. My presence is mandatory. I don’t care if you think you can trust someone. Assume that you can’t, people betray others every day.” George wouldn’t back down. This is what he feared would happen, but he hadn’t expected
