Chapter 1

Chapter one: accidentally on purpose

If love had a warning sound, mine never made noise.

It came quietly. Soft. Sweet. Disguised as care.

We were both students, same school, same stress, same dreams, same routine. He was the one I walked with after lectures, the one who saved seats for me in class, the one everybody already knew as “her boyfriend.” Being with him felt normal. Safe. Like something I didn’t have to question.

So I didn’t.

Not at first.

He used to text me every morning. Ask if I’d eaten. Complain about lecturers. Laugh about nothing. Those little things wrapped around my heart without permission. I started seeing him in my future before I even noticed it.

Then small things began changing.

He started keeping his phone closer.

Replies came late.

Smiles became careful.

I noticed, but I hated confrontation. I hated asking questions that might open doors I wasn’t ready to walk through. So instead of speaking, I pretended.

That day, we were in his room off campus, reading for a test that neither of us was really focused on. My phone died, and without thinking, I reached for his.

“Let me hotspot,” I said.

“Okay,” he replied, distracted.

Simple. Normal.

Until the screen lit up.

A message dropped immediately.

Baby: Are you coming over tonight?

My finger froze.

I wasn’t trying to snoop. I wasn’t planning to investigate. But curiosity doesn’t ask permission when fear already lives inside you.

Another message came.

Baby: I miss you.

My throat went dry.

Slowly, like my hands might break something fragile, I tapped the notification.

The chat opened.

Pictures.

Voice notes.

Laughing emojis.

Promises that sounded too familiar.

Not one girl.

Many.

Different names, same tone. Same him. Same affection he used on me like a template.

My heartbeat became loud in my ears. I felt heat crawl up my neck and into my face. My body was sitting in the room, but my soul had stepped outside, watching someone else get destroyed quietly.

I kept scrolling even though each swipe hurt.

“Can’t wait to see you.”

“You’re mine.”

“Don’t tell anyone.”

Funny. Because I was the one everyone already knew.

Behind me, he was still reading.

“Did you connect?” he asked casually.

I swallowed.

“Almost,” I said.

Almost.

Almost brave.

Almost broken.

I locked his phone and placed it back gently, like it hadn’t just cut something inside me. My hands were shaking, so I folded them together.

He looked up and smiled.

That same smile I trusted.

That same smile other girls probably trusted too.

“You’re quiet,” he said.

“Just tired,” I replied.

Another lie.

We sat there, side by side, pretending nothing had happened, while something inside me was already bleeding softly. I wanted to ask. I wanted to scream. I wanted to know why loving him felt like sharing him with invisible people.

But fear sat heavier than truth.

So I stayed silent.

And in that silence, I learned something strange:

Sometimes you don’t discover betrayal.

It discovers you.

And after that day, nothing really stayed the same.

Not my smile.

Not my love.

Not even him.

It was just… and so on.
