ANNA POV

“I brought the champagne,” I say into the empty marble foyer.

Silence answers me. The heavy oak doors of the Voss estate echo as I snap them shut behind my heels, my fingers clutching the chilled bottle of Dom Pérignon. I cut my London PR trip short by twelve hours, taking an earlier flight across the Atlantic just to surprise Jack for our third anniversary.

“Jack?” I call out again, stepping deeper into the ground floor.

The main house is dead quiet. My father is away in Dubai on business, leaving the sprawling glass-and-stone compound largely deserted for the weekend. I kick off my heels by the threshold, my toes sinking into the plush Persian runner as I head toward the rear floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

Then I hear it.

A faint, muffled laugh carries across the central lawn. It isn't coming from the main house—it’s coming from the guest pool house near the edge of the gardens.

I frown, setting my designer leather tote on the kitchen counter while keeping my grip on the champagne bottle. Jack said he’d be working late on the merger pitch at his apartment downtown. Why would he be here?

I step out through the side garden entrance, the cool evening air biting at my bare arms. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the pool house glow like a lit lantern against the darkening sky. As I draw closer across the damp grass, the golden light inside cuts through the shadows, framing two silhouettes standing right near the edge of the water.

I stop dead in my tracks.

Through the clear glass, I see my boyfriend, Jack Morrison. He’s standing chest-to-chest with a woman, his posture loose, his hands resting on her waist.

My breath hitches in my throat. I take two steps closer, praying my eyes are playing tricks on me in the dusk.

They aren't.

The woman turns her head into the pool light, her manicured hand gliding slowly up Jack’s chest, resting flat over his heart. Her dark hair falls in pristine waves over her shoulders.

It’s Mary. My forty-five-year-old stepmother.

Jack tilts his head down, resting his forehead directly against hers. The closeness isn't accidental. It isn't a casual, familial hug. It is intimate, heavy, and sickeningly comfortable.

“Jack?” I whisper, but the word dies in my mouth.

My fingers instantly go numb. The glass bottle of Dom Pérignon slips from my paralyzed grip and crashes hard against the stone flagstones at my feet.

CRASH.

Green glass explodes across the walkway, foam spraying over my bare ankles.

Inside the glass house, both figures freeze.

Jack flinches, his head snapping toward the garden, his eyes widening in immediate, raw terror. He stumbles back a step, his fingers frantically reaching down to adjust the disheveled collar of his button-down shirt.

Mary doesn't flinch. She doesn't pull away in shame.

Instead, Mary slowly turns toward the shattered glass floor, her dark eyes locking directly onto mine through the windowpane. A slow, deliberate smile spreads across her lips—not guilty, not caught, but entirely knowing. She glides toward the sliding glass door, pushing it open with two fingers.

“You’re home early, darling,” Mary says softly, her voice dripping with artificial warmth as her eyes scan my pale face. “We were just... discussing the merger.”

Her smile never fades.

A wave of nausea hits me so violently my knees buckle. I don't demand an explanation. I don't listen to Jack stuttering my name behind her.

I turn around and run.

I scramble over the sharp shards of glass, ignoring the sting on my feet as I Sprint blindly back toward the driveway. Tears blind my vision, blurring the manicured hedges into dark streaks of green. I throw myself into the driver’s seat of my car, slamming the door shut and shoving the keyless ignition button.

The engine roars to life. I slam my foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the estate driveway. The heavy iron gates of the Voss estate are still slowly sliding open.

My hands shake violently on the leather steering wheel. The world outside spins out of focus—Jack’s face, Mary’s hand on his chest, the smirk on her lips.

I can't breathe.

I swing the wheel hard to force the car through the closing gap, but my tear-filled eyes misjudge the distance completely. The tires lose traction on the slick gravel outside the gate.

The metallic screech of tires tearing against tarmac echoes through the night, followed immediately by the sickening sound of crumpling steel as the front bumper slams head-on into the oak tree outside the gates.

The airbag deploys with a deafening bang, smashing hard into my chest and pinning me backward against the seat. Smoke curls up from the hood as the engine dies into a terrifying, silence-filled hum.

PETER POV“You sent for me,” I say, stepping into the cold air of the boathouse.Anna sits behind the wooden table near the water’s edge. The yellow light overhead cuts across the dark room, illuminating the spread of paper files Victor Kane gave us. But right in the center of the table sits another file. A black leather binder. My eyes fixate instantly on the white tab sticking out from the side, bearing my own sharp, architectural handwriting.I stop walking. My pulse stays flat, but my jaw locks tight.“Tell me about the asset assessment, Peter,” Anna says quietly, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. She doesn't raise her voice. She doesn't slam her hands on the table. She simply slides my three-year-old memo across the polished wood until it rests against my belt buckle.“Tell me about the lesson,” she adds, looking straight up into my eyes.I don't reach down to touch the paper. I don't flinch. I stand perfectly straight, keeping my posture rigid and my face completely unreadab

ANNA POV“Where are the 2019 ledgers?” I whisper to myself, sliding another heavy metal drawer open in the sub-basement archive of Voss International. The fluorescent bulbs overhead flicker with a low, annoying hum. I’m deep beneath the main tower, surrounding myself with dusty banker boxes and cold concrete walls. I’m looking for the physical paper trail connecting my father, Richard, to Victor Kane—the paper records Richard assumed were shredded five years ago.My fingers stop on a thick black leather portfolio tucked behind a stack of corporate tax audits.I pull it out into the dim light. Printed across the front cover in silver foil is a single label: J. Morrison—Asset Assessment.Jack Morrison. My ex-fiancé.My heart hammers wildly against my ribs as I flip the heavy binder open.Inside are dozens of high-resolution surveillance photographs of Jack taken at a underground casino in Atlantic City. Below the photos are detailed financial summaries of his personal bank accounts, hig

ANNA POV“I’m Elena,” the woman says, standing up the second I open my office door. “Peter’s fiancée.”She’s tall, blonde, and wearing a tailored European-cut suit that screams old money. She holds a sleek leather clutch in her hand, smiling at me with a polite, razor-thin expression that doesn't reach her bright blue eyes.My chest tightens so hard I forget how to draw air into my lungs.“He didn't mention you were coming,” I say, holding the door handle tight to keep my fingers from trembling.“So you’re the sister,” Elena says, stepping forward and taking her time looking me up and down like I’m a piece of cheap furniture. “Peter mentioned you when Richard married your mother. Though he didn't mention you were still living under his roof.”The word sister hangs heavy in the quiet office, spoken with a sharp emphasis that feels like an intentional stake in the ground.“I’m his business partner,” I correct her, walking past her to slide into the chair behind my oak desk. “Is there so

  • Poison: Two Can Ruin   CHAPTER 14

ANNA POV“How long were you planning to hide out down here?” I ask, pushing the heavy wooden door of the boathouse open.Three full days of dead silence. Three days of Peter hiding behind back-to-back corporate meetings, late-night office hours, and closed bedroom doors. He’s been systematically avoiding me ever since he punched Jack at the hotel bar.He sits on an overturned wooden crate near the edge of the dock, staring down at a faded photograph in his hand. The dim moonlight reflects off the dark water beside him, cutting harsh shadows across his sharp jawline.“I’m not hiding,” Peter says, his voice flat, dead, and entirely drained of emotion.“You haven’t looked at me in seventy-two hours, Peter,” I say, stepping across the dusty wooden floorboards until I’m standing right in front of him. “What is that?”He doesn’t answer with words. He simply holds up the photo Victor Kane gave him at the gala.I take the glossy photo, tilting it toward the pale moonlight. I trace the red tim

ANNA POV“Put the camera pen in the left side of your purse,” Peter says, his voice flat and clinical as he leans over my shoulder. We’re sitting in the back of his black utility van, parked two blocks down from the high-end hotel bar where Jack drinks every Thursday night. The plan is mine. I’m meeting Jack under the guise of an emotional breakdown. I’m going to pretend I’m considering taking him back, play the heartbroken ex, and push him until he admits on tape that Richard paid him to target me from the very beginning.Peter reaches out, his cold fingers brushing against my collarbone as he adjusts the micro-microphone clipped to my dress lining. His touch sends a sharp shiver straight down my spine, but his grey eyes remain totally detached, like he’s fitting a wire on a total stranger.“If he touches you, give the signal,” Peter says, his thumb lingering for a fraction of a second against my skin before he pulls back. “I’ll come in.”“You’ll blow our cover,” I say, taking a slow

ANNA POV“We aren't going to that gala,” Peter says, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and cutting through the quiet living room of his apartment. It's three in the morning. He sits behind his glass desk, papers and digital tablets spreading around him like a battle plan. He’s been digging into Victor Kane for six hours straight, his face pale and drained under the dim desk lamp. On the corner of his desk lies an old framed photo of him at seven years old—standing stiffly beside a smiling woman right before his mother disappeared from his life forever.“Victor knows something about my mother,” I say, stepping closer to his desk and folding my arms over my chest. “About why she really died five years ago.”“Your mother died in a car crash on Route 9,” Peter says, not even looking up from his laptop screen. “It’s a police record.”“So did Princess Diana,” I shoot back, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Doesn’t mean it was an accident.”Peter slams his laptop shut with a sudden, sharp crac
