Seven Years Later

Emery's POV

"Mom, I can't find my shoe!"

"Which one?" I call from the kitchen, stuffing the last bite of toast into my mouth while searching my bag for my ID badge.

"The blue one!"

I sigh and walk into the living room.

Muna stands in the middle of a mess of shoes, one sneaker already on his foot and the other nowhere in sight.

"It's under the couch," I say.

He drops to his knees and reaches underneath. A second later, he pulls out the missing shoe and grins.

"Found it!"

"You're a genius."

I crouch down to tie his laces. When he looks up at me, smiling wide, I pause.

There it is again.

That look in his eyes.

Sharp. Familiar.

He is only six, but sometimes I see pieces of a man in him that I've spent seven years trying not to think about.

I quickly look away.

"Come on. We're going to be late."

Seven years ago, I was nineteen, standing in my parents' living room with a positive pregnancy test clenched in my hand.

By the end of that day, I was thrown out.

Finn had packed his things and left with me without asking a single question.

"You're not doing this alone."

He has kept that promise ever since.

The first year nearly broke us. We slept in his car for eleven days before we could afford a tiny room above a laundromat. When Muna was born, I went back to work five days later because we needed the money.

There were nights when I came home too exhausted to feel my feet. There were weeks when I had to choose between groceries and bills.

I never told Muna any of that.

He only knew that Mom always came home.

Things finally changed last year when Finn's career took off. He bought this house and refused to let me keep sacrificing everything for survival.

"You have a mind for design," he'd told me. "Finish your degree."

So I did.

For the first time, I'm building a life instead of simply trying to get through the next day.

"Mommy, are you gonna be late?"

Muna's voice pulls me back.

"A little." I stand and grab my bag. "Uncle Finn is picking you up after school, remember?"

"I know. He said we're getting ice cream."

"Did he?"

"He pinky promised."

I laugh and kiss his forehead.

The front door opens.

Finn walks in with his gym bag over one shoulder, already dressed for training.

"Morning."

"Morning. No match today?"

"Just training. I'm free afterward."

He ruffles Muna's hair.

"Which means someone is getting picked up from school personally."

"Yay!"

Muna throws his arms into the air.

I smile, watching them.

Then Finn glances at his phone.

"Oh, by the way. Guess who called me last night?"

"Who?"

"Alaric."

My fingers stop around the strap of my bag.

For one second, I can't breathe.

"Alaric?" I repeat.

"Yeah."

Finn looks amused by my reaction, but he doesn't seem to notice what is happening behind my face.

"I haven't heard from him in seven years. He called out of nowhere. He's coming back to Miami for a project."

Seven years.

The number seem to settle heavily between us.

"He asked if he could crash here while he's staying here." Finn continues, shrugging like it is the most normal thing in the world, because to him, it is. "We've been friends since we were kids, so obviously I said yes."

I force myself to smile.

"Of course."

Finn frowns slightly. "You're okay with that?"

"Why wouldn't I be?"

Because I've spent seven years learning how to live without him.

Because I've built a life he knows nothing about.

Because his return can tear open everything I've worked so hard to bury.

Instead, I shrug.

"He's your best friend. It would be rude to say no."

Finn smiles, relieved.

"He'll probably be here in a few days."

A few days.

I nod and pick up my keys.

"I have to go."

I kiss Muna's forehead.

"Be good for Uncle Finn."

"No promises," Finn calls from the kitchen.

Muna giggles.

I smile until I reach the front door.

The moment it closes behind me, the smile disappears.

At the design studio, I try to focus on the sketches in front of me.

I can't.

Alaric is coming back.

I've spent seven years making sure his name never becomes part of my life again. I've worked, studied, raised Muna and built something stable out of the mess he left behind.

I don't need him.

I don't want anything from him.

So why is my heart beating like I'm nineteen again?

My phone rings around noon.

I glance at the screen and answer without thinking.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a familiar voice comes through the line.

Deep.

Calm.

Impossible to forget.

"Hey, little bun."

My entire body goes still.

I know that voice.

I've spent seven years trying to forget it.

Alaric.

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 23

Emery's POVThe weekend crawls by in careful, deliberate avoidance.I don't see Alaric once, not really. I hear him some mornings, the shower running down the hall, the quiet clink of a mug in the kitchen before I make myself wait an extra ten minutes before coming down myself. He seems to be doing the same thing in reverse, timing his own movements around mine, both of us circling the house like two people who've agreed without ever saying so out loud that facing each other right now would be unbearable.I'm grateful when Finn walks through the door on Sunday night, duffel bag over one shoulder, exhausted but grinning from a win I only half register him describing. His presence fills the house back up with something normal, something loud and uncomplicated, and Monday morning I hand Muna off to him with more relief than I probably should feel. "You good?" Finn asks, tying Muna's shoe at the door. "You've been weird all weekend.""Just tired," I say, which isn't a lie so much as it'

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 22

Alaric's POVI leave the house within minutes of the kiss, my car keys already in my hand before I've fully decided to go anywhere, some old, useless instinct telling my body to put distance between myself and a door I want nothing more than to walk back through.I don't trust myself standing that close to her. That's the truth of it, plain and humiliating. If I'd stayed one more minute in that hallway, if I'd let myself linger on the taste of her, the way she'd melted into me before catching herself, I don't know what I would have done next. Probably followed her into that room, said things I have no right to say yet and made promises I don't currently have the power to keep.I drive without any real destination, just streets blurring past, my hands too tight on the wheel, my mouth still warm from hers.God, I wanted more.I wanted more the second her hands slid up into my jacket, the second she opened under me like she'd been waiting years for exactly that. I don't know what I did

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 21

Emery's POVI don't know what happens to me at that moment. One second I'm frozen, shocked into stillness, and the next my body is moving entirely without my permission, my hands sliding up into Alaric's jacket, my mouth opening under his like some starving, seven year old wound in me has finally, finally gotten what it's been begging for since I was fourteen years old.He kisses me the way he never did that night in the dark hotel room. Slow. Deliberate. Like he's memorizing the shape of my mouth instead of trying to forget it. His hand cradles my jaw, thumb brushing along my cheekbone, and something in my chest breaks open wide and warm, seven years of carefully built walls collapsing all at once under the weight of one single kiss.I kiss him back.I kiss him back like I've been waiting my whole life to do exactly this, like the anger from twenty minutes ago never happened, like Joan isn't sitting alone at a restaurant table right now wondering what he did wrong, and this man stand

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 20

Emery's POVThe question sits in the air between us, and for one traitorous second, my heart does something stupid and hopeful.I watch his face instead of looking away. Something flashes behind his eyes, quick, raw, unmistakable, gone almost as fast as it appears. His jaw tightens. His hand curls into a fist at his side, fingers digging into his own palm hard enough that I can see the strain in his knuckles even in the dim streetlight. He doesn't say anything. The silence stretches. One second. Two. Long enough that some small, foolish part of me actually believes he might answer yes to my question. He doesn't.And underneath the hurt, the anger finally catches up with me too, the anger I'd shoved aside the second he grabbed my wrist and dragged me out of that restaurant like I belonged to him. He humiliated me in front of Joan. In front of an entire dining room full of strangers who probably watched a man haul a woman out of her own date without a single word of explanation. He h

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 19

Alaric's POVI chose this restaurant myself. Quiet enough for a serious conversation, private enough that two men in suits discussing numbers wouldn't draw attention from anyone at the surrounding tables. My assistant booked it for five, a dinner meeting with a prospective investor and his associate, the kind of quiet, unhurried conversation that usually closes deals better than any boardroom pitch ever does.I hadn't expected to spend half of it distracted by a table across the room.I noticed her the moment we sat down. Emery, in a dress I've never seen her wear, seated across from a man I don't recognize, the two of them already deep in some conversation that had her laughing before the appetizers even arrived. The investor is still talking. Something about supply chains, projected timelines, numbers I should be writing down and processing instead of watching a stranger lean too close to Emery's side of the table.Who is he?The thought arrives sharp and possessive, a feeling I ha

  • Pregnant After One Night With My Brother's Best Friend    Chapter 18

Emery's POVJossie had texted back within minutes of my message that night with an immediate offer. ‘YES. Finally! I have someone perfect. Don't overthink it, just show up Saturday at 5.’ I don’t tell her I'm only doing it for Muna's sake. Some things feel easier left unsaid, even to Jossie.Saturday morning, I drop Muna off at her place by myself, his bag packed with his favorite snacks and a book he refuses to go out without.Alaric left the house before either of us was awake, some important meeting he mentioned briefly to Finn the night before, gone before I even got the chance to ask if he'd be around to watch Muna. It works out easier this way anyway. Jossie loves having him over, and I don't have to explain to my six year old why his mother is getting dressed up to go on a date that isn't really a date at all.By the time I stand in front of the restaurant that evening, smoothing down my dress for the second time, I've half convinced myself this is a perfectly reasonable plan
