"You shouldn't have said his name, little girl."

The voice was thin, like dry leaves scraping over flagstones. It came from the deepest corner of the cell, where the torchlight from the corridor couldn't reach.

Lyra didn't move. She couldn't. Her body was locked in a tight coil, her hands pinned between her chest and her knees to shelter her belly from the stone floor. Every breath felt like swallowed glass, her broken rib throbbing in rhythm with the fever hammering behind her eyes.

"Where is she?"The roared question shattered the quiet of the grand stone hall, bouncing off the soaring vaulted ceiling like thunder rolling through a cavern.Valerius did not wait for an answer. He slammed his heavy, ringed fist down onto the ancient oak map table, the sheer, unbridled force of the blow splitting the thick timber straight down the center with a loud, wooden CRACK. Inkwells shattered, sending pools of black ink spreading like fresh blood across detailed maps of the northern border territory. Parchments rolled onto the polished marble floor, ruined and soaked, but no one moved to pick them up.Three high-ranking commanders and his chief security guard flinched in unison, instinctively taking a hasty step back into the shadows cast by the high granite pillars. Their hands hovered near their sword hilts out of pure habit, but none dared lift their eyes to look straight at the high stone throne elevated above them. The air in the throne room had turned bitterly cold, ye

"Drop the iron, or I'll break your wrists right here."The command barked out of the stifling dust before Lyra’s eyes could even adjust to the gloom.A heavy guard with grease-stained leather straps across his chest grabbed the coarse hemp rope bound around her wrists, slicing through the knot with a short, rusted blade. The violent tug snapped her forward, her iron ankle shackles clanking heavily against the jagged stone floor of the underground pit.The air down here in Section Four was thick, wet, and burning hot, smelling of damp earth, black soot, and the metallic tang of old sweat. High above them, massive pine timbers held up the raw granite ceiling, groaning under the sheer weight of the mountain overhead."Move, baggage!" the scar-faced guard Jaros shoved her hard from behind, driving his boot into her shoulder.Lyra stumbled, her bare, cut feet sliding on the slick, black mud of the cavern floor. She barely caught herself against a timber support post, her fingers digging in

Her body was locked in a tight coil, her hands pinned between her chest and her knees to shelter her belly from the stone floor. Every breath felt like swallowed glass, her broken rib throbbing in rhythm with the fever hammering behind her eyes."They'll kill you for it," the voice continued, raspy and quiet. "Not because the king cares. But because they do."In the dim shift of shadows, a shape pulled itself upright against the damp wall. It was an old woman, wrapped in rags so caked with grime they looked like wet bark. Her hair hung in matted grey ropes around a face that was little more than hollow skin stretched over sharp bone."They run things their own way down here," the old woman whispered, leaning forward just enough for her pale, milk

"Our king doesn't speak to human trash."The voice came from behind the massive wolf's shoulder, cold and thick as slush.Three men stepped out of the pine shadows onto the dirt track. They didn't look like village hunters. They wore heavy leather coats lined with grey fur, iron buckles fastened across their chests, and long steel blades swinging at their thighs. Their eyes were sharp, yellow as raw corn, staring down at Lyra like she was something rotten dropped on the snow. The giant red-eyed wolf didn't move. It stayed low on its haunches, a quiet growl vibrating in its throat while the border patrol walked up beside it.Lyra took a shaking step back, her bloody bare soles slipping on the frozen gravel. "Please..." Her voice broke, dry as a dead leaf. "I came to see the Alpha King. Just let me pass the border line. Please."The lead guard—a tall man with a broken nose and a dark scar cutting through his cheek—halted three feet away. He looked at her torn dress, her bloody feet, and

"The Alpha King..."Lyra said the name aloud. Her lips barely pulled apart. She lay flat on her left side in the cold dirt, knees tucked up high to shield her stomach. Her skin was hot, burning up from the fever, making the black cave rocks seem to slide sideways whenever she tried to look straight at the wall.Outside, wind blew through the dry brush. Inside, her brain would not stop running. Old pieces of talk from her father's cellar kept floating back up to the top of her head. She remembered two watchmen sitting on the oak steps outside her iron cell door. It was late on her second night in the dark. They had a big clay jug of sour ale balanced between their boots, shifting their feet every few minutes. They thought she was out cold on the rotten straw in the corner. They were talking about the northern mountain ridge. The jagged grey rocks where village hunters never went. The high woods where trees grew too close together for the sun to hit the dirt."He's back up there," one g

"Stay down," Lyra whispered to herself, her throat dry as ashes. She pressed her back flat against the cold stone wall, pulling her dirty knees tight to her chest. She held her breath, her heart hammering against her bruised ribs so hard it felt like it would break straight through her skin.Outside the cave entrance, the dead briars rustled against the rock.A low, deep breath blew through the narrow opening in the stone. The heavy, metallic stench of wild fur and fresh blood filled the small shelter, so thick it made Lyra’s stomach turn in a violent wave. Through the gaps in the dried vines, she saw the dark, matted hide of a mountain beast pass by.It stopped right at the entrance. Its long, grey snout sniffed the frozen dirt, its hot breath fogging white in the bitter air.Lyra clamped both hands tight over her mouth. She didn't dare blink. She didn't dare let a single muscle shake. She lay completely frozen in the dark, watching the heavy, jagged shadow of the predator hover righ
