Chapter 107: The Floating Prison

The floor swayed rhythmically beneath them. The low hum of massive diesel engines vibrated through the metal walls.

Inside the white containment room, Alex was sweating.

"Hold still, Aurora," Alex whispered. He was kneeling behind his little sister, holding the thin copper wire he had extracted from his shoe sole.

He jammed the wire into the charging port of Aurora’s dampener collar.

"It tickles!" Aurora giggled nervously.

"Shh!" Mia stood by the door, pressing her ear against the cold steel. "I hear footsteps. Two guards. Heavy boots."

"Almost..." Alex bit his lip. He wasn't trying to hack the collar—that required a computer. He was trying to create a controlled short circuit.

ZAP.

A tiny spark flew. The red light on Aurora’s collar turned Green. The locking mechanism clicked open.

"Done!" Alex pulled the heavy metal collar off her neck. "Rory, are you okay? Can you use your magic?"

Aurora rubbed her neck. She looked at a plastic cup on the table. She squinted. The cup wobbled and floated an inch off the table.

"It’s weak," Aurora whispered, looking tired. "The bad metal made me sleepy."

"Save your energy," Alex tossed the collar under the bed. "Now, the door."

He moved to the keypad lock of the door. He stripped the insulation off a lamp cord and jammed the live wires into the keypad.

Sparks. Smoke.

The keypad fried. The magnetic lock disengaged with a groan.

Alex pushed the door open. "Let's go. Stay low."

They crept out into the hallway of the ship. It looked like a hospital hallway, sterile and white, completely out of place on a cargo ship.

They passed a room with a glass window. Mia looked inside and gasped.

"Alex... look."

Alex peeked. Inside the room were rows of blue tubes. Inside the tubes were... animals. But they were wrong. Wolves with scales. Snakes with fur.

"Hybrids," Alex’s face went pale. "Grandma Margaret talked about this. Genetic splicing. They aren't just kidnapping us. They want to turn us into that."

"I want to go home," Aurora started to cry.

Suddenly, an alarm blared. [ BREACH IN SECTOR 4 ]

"Run!" Alex grabbed their hands.

They sprinted down the corridor. They turned a corner and ran straight into a wall.

Not a wall. A man.

It was Dr. Silas. He was flanked by four heavily armed guards.

"Going somewhere, class?" Silas smiled, adjusting his glasses. He looked down at the collar in Alex's hand. "Ingenious. You shorted the circuit. I underestimated you, Subject Alpha."

"Let us go!" Mia screamed. She didn't hesitate. She kicked Silas in the shin and tried to bite a guard's hand.

The guard simply picked her up by the back of her shirt like a kitten.

"Put her down!" Aurora screamed. Her eyes flashed violet.

Silas pulled out a remote. He pressed a button.

The hallway ceiling emitted a high-frequency sonic blast.

SCREECH!

All three kids covered their ears, screaming in pain. It was a frequency designed to incapacitate enhanced brains. Aurora collapsed, fainting instantly.

"You have spirit. I like that," Silas stood over them. "But we are done playing together."

He pointed to Aurora’s unconscious body.

"Take Subject Gamma to the helicopter. We are flying her to the main lab ahead of schedule. The extraction begins tonight."

"NO! Don't take her!" Alex grabbed Silas’s leg, tears finally falling. "She's just a baby! Take me instead!"

Silas kicked Alex away gently.

"You and your sister will stay on the ship as insurance," Silas smoothed his white suit. "If your father follows us, he will have to choose: save the twins on the sinking ship, or chase the helicopter to save the baby."

Silas signaled the guards. They picked up the limp body of five-year-old Aurora and walked away.

"Aurora!" Mia screamed, thrashing in the guard's grip.

Alex lay on the floor, watching his little sister being taken away. He clenched his fists until they bled.

They separated us.

But as Silas walked away, Alex noticed something. A small keycard had fallen from the Doctor's pocket during Mia's kick.

Alex quietly slid his hand over it.

He couldn't save Aurora now. But he could signal Dad.

"Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's.
