Chapter 77: The Miracle

The Royal Infirmary had been sterilized three times. Jackson checked.

"Dr. Aris," Jackson stood by the bed, holding Serenity’s hand so tight his knuckles were white. "If she says 'ow', I will deduce it from your paycheck."

The new Royal Doctor (the real Dr. Aris's successor) was sweating. "Your Highness... it is childbirth. Pain is... inevitable."

"Inefficient," Jackson growled. "Can't we transfer the pain to me? Like a wire transfer?"

Serenity laughed, panting through a contraction. "Jackson... shut up. You are stressing the baby out."

"I am motivating the baby," Jackson wiped sweat from her forehead with a silk handkerchief. "Come on, kid. Launch sequence initiate. 10 minus T."

"He's treating this like a SpaceX launch," Margaret shook her head, watching from the corner. She was there for support, calm and collected.

Six hours later.

The mood in the room shifted from anxious to intense.

"I see the head!" The doctor announced. "One more push, Your Highness! Give me everything you have!"

"I can't!" Serenity cried out, throwing her head back. She was exhausted. Her hair was matted to her face. "I'm too tired."

"Look at me," Jackson cupped her face. His eyes were fierce and full of love.

"You faced an army unarmed. You walked into the Viper's nest. You are a Queen, Serenity. You are the strongest woman I know."

He kissed her knuckles. "Bring our baby home."

Serenity found strength she didn't know she had. She took a deep breath and pushed with a primal scream.

And then... silence.

Followed by a loud, angry cry.

WAAAAH!

The sound filled the room, brighter than the sunrise outside.

"It's a girl!" The doctor announced, lifting the tiny, squirming bundle. "A healthy baby girl."

Jackson stopped breathing. He watched as the nurse cleaned the baby and wrapped her in a blanket with the Royal Crest.

They handed the baby to Serenity.

"Hi," Serenity whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Hi, little one."

Jackson leaned over. He stared at the baby. She had a tuff of black hair like him, but her eyes... even squinting, he could see they were Serenity’s.

The King of Wall Street, the man who terrified generals, felt his knees go weak.

"She's so small," Jackson whispered, afraid to touch her. "What if I break her?"

"You won't," Serenity smiled weakly. "Hold her, Papa."

Jackson reached out with trembling hands. He took the bundle. The baby stopped crying immediately. She grabbed Jackson's pinky finger with her tiny hand and held on tight.

That was it. Jackson Sterling was defeated.

He cried. Silent, happy tears rolling down his cheeks.

"I got you," he whispered to his daughter. "I got you. No one will ever hurt you. I'll buy you the moon if you ask for it."

The doors opened quietly. Alex and Mia peeked in.

"Is it done?" Mia asked. "Is it a monster?"

"Come see," Jackson lowered the baby so they could look.

"It's a girl," Alex observed. "Statistically probable."

"She looks like a potato," Mia poked the baby's cheek gently. "But a cute potato."

"What's her name?" Margaret asked, wiping her eyes.

Jackson and Serenity exchanged a look. They had debated names for months, but in this moment, looking at the sunrise painting the sky gold outside the window, only one name fit.

"Aurora," Serenity said softly. "Because she is the dawn after the long night."

"Princess Aurora Sterling," Jackson kissed the baby's forehead. "Welcome to the family."

In the palace garden, the cherry blossoms were blooming out of season again. As if nature itself was welcoming the new life.

The war was over. The family was whole.

And for the first time in forever, everything was perfect.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. "Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's.
