Chapter 97: Core Meltdown

"Watch out!" Jackson shoved Serenity aside just as a massive stone fist crushed the floor where she was standing.

The Sentinels were relentless. They moved with a jerky, unnatural rhythm, their eyes glowing with menacing blue light. Bullets simply sparked off their obsidian armor.

"We can't hold them!" Luke shouted, firing his assault rifle in bursts. "There are too many!"

The Elders watched from their floating platforms, emotionless. "Resistance is futile. Submit."

Alex huddled behind a piece of debris, his laptop glowing. "Dad! I can't hack them! They aren't running on code. They are running on raw bio-electricity. It's like a hive mind!"

"Then find the brain!" Jackson roared, pulling the pin on a grenade and sliding it under a Sentinel's legs. BOOM. The machine stumbled but kept coming.

"The brain is the Core!" Alex pointed to the giant glowing pillar in the center of the city. "But it's shielded! We can't touch it!"

Serenity touched the locket on her neck. It was burning hot against her skin.

She felt it. A pulsating rhythm coming from the central pillar. It felt familiar. It felt like... her own heartbeat. But twisted.

"I can touch it," Serenity whispered.

She stood up.

"Serenity, get down!" Jackson yelled.

"Cover me, Jackson," Serenity looked at him. Her eyes were starting to shimmer with a faint golden hue. "They are using my family's legacy. They are using the Element. I can take it back."

Jackson saw the resolve in her face. He didn't argue. He reloaded his last magazine.

"Luke, Sebastian, form a wedge! Protect the Queen!"

Jackson led the charge. He became a whirlwind of violence, shooting joints, using a combat knife to pry open armor plating, creating a path through the monsters.

"Clear!" Jackson shouted.

Serenity sprinted towards the central control pillar. It was a massive crystal spire, pulsing with the corrupt purple energy of the Order.

Elder Sol realized what she was doing. "Stop her! She will destabilize the grid!"

The Sentinels turned, ignoring Jackson, and lunged at Serenity.

"Not today!" Sebastian threw himself at a Sentinel, jamming his metal prosthetic leg into its gears to stop it.

Serenity reached the crystal. She slammed her hand against it.

"STOP," she commanded.

It wasn't a whisper. It was a scream from her soul.

Her blood resonated with the ancient machine. The Golden Hawk locket flashed with blinding light.

HUMMMMMM..... CRACK!

The purple light inside the crystal fought back, but Serenity poured all her anger, her love for Aurora, and her will to survive into it. The golden light overpowered the purple.

The crystal cracked.

"No!" The Elders screamed as their floating platforms lost power and crashed to the ground.

A shockwave of pure energy exploded from Serenity.

ZZZZZT!

It swept through the city like an EMP blast. Every Sentinel froze mid-step. The lights in their eyes died instantly. They turned back into lifeless stone statues.

Silence fell over the city.

The massive dome overhead groaned. Cracks began to appear on the ceiling, water dripping through.

"Warning," Alex looked at his readings. "Core stability at 0%. Self-destruct sequence... initiated."

Serenity slumped against the pillar, exhausted. Jackson caught her.

"You did it," Jackson grinned, kissing her sweaty forehead. "You literally broke the city."

"We have five minutes before the ocean crushes us," Alex grabbed his backpack. "We need to go. Now."

"The sub path is blocked!" Luke reminded them.

"The Energy Tower!" Jackson pointed to the spire in the distance that connected to the surface vents. "It has an escape pod!"

They ran. Behind them, the glorious city of Sanctuary began to crumble into the abyss.

Sparks showered from the ceiling. The sound of tearing metal was deafening. The dining car groaned and tilted violently to the right. Tables, chairs, and expensive wine bottles slid down the slope, crashing into the wall.Jackson slammed one hand into a window frame, his other arm locked around Serenity’s waist. He stopped them from sliding into the pile of broken glass below."Don't let go!" Jackson shouted over the noise.Serenity looked down. Through the shattered window beneath them, she saw nothing but swirling snow and darkness. They were dangling over a canyon."The coupling is breaking!" Serenity yelled, pointing to the metal hook connecting their car to the rest of the train. It was stretching, groaning under the weight.CLANG.The door at the top of the tilted car (the one Zero left through) was kicked open. Two figures rappelled down into the car on zip lines. They wore sleek, matte-black armor. The Midnight Express tore through the darkness of the Swiss Alps at 300 kilometers per hour.In the exclusive private dining car, crystal glasses jingled softly with the vibration of the tracks. Outside the window, nothing existed but snow and night.Jackson adjusted his cufflinks. Under his tuxedo, he was wearing a ceramic knife taped to his ribs—the only weapon the metal detectors didn't pick up.Serenity sat opposite him, looking breathtaking in a black velvet gown. She held a clutch that contained a small vial of Margaret’s anti-serum."Nervous?" Jackson asked, pouring her water."I’m having dinner with the man who tried to kidnap our children," Serenity’s eyes were cold. "I’m not nervous. I’m restraining myself from stabbing him with a fork.""Patience," Jackson whispered. The door at the end of the car slid open.A man walked in.He looked nothing like a villain. He was handsome, in his forties, wearing a grey suit that cost more than the train itself. He had silver hair and a s

"Close your eyes," Liam commanded softly. The nursery was dimly lit. Aurora and Alex lay on the large rug, pillows under their heads. Liam sat between them in a lotus position. Jackson and Serenity watched from the couch, feeling useless but alert."Grandpa, this is unscientific," Alex muttered, keeping one eye open. "Telepathy isn't real.""Quantum entanglement is," Liam placed a finger on Alex's forehead and another on Aurora's. "Connect."A pulse of violet light rippled through the room. The Dreamscape.Alex gasped. He wasn't on the rug anymore. He was standing on an endless plane of pure white water. The sky was white.
