Chapter 2

Ferrari
Early the next morning, Chloe Bennett and her mother moved into the Hale estate.

Lorraine Bennett stood in the middle of the living room ordering the staff around. The moment she saw me coming down the stairs, she gave an ugly little snort. "Oh, you're still here? Aren't you embarrassed? A penniless woman with no family, clinging to somebody else's house like she owns it."

Satisfaction flashed through Chloe's eyes, though she tugged lightly on her mother's sleeve. "Mom, don't say that…"

"Am I wrong?" Lorraine shook her off. "Grant said it to my face — he's marrying my daughter. That one is an outsider with no ring, no official status and no place here."

I stopped halfway down the stairs, my fingers curling around the railing, and looked at Grant. "Is that what you think too?" I asked. "That I'm an outsider?"

Grant said nothing. He only came over and lowered his voice, trying to soothe me. "Right now everyone thinks Chloe's baby is mine. We can't let the truth get out before she gives birth. Think about what it would do to her. Just put up with it for a while, okay?"

That night, Grant came to find me. "Serena, Chloe says the downstairs room is too damp and she can't sleep in it. Could you move into the little room by the staff quarters for a few months?"

I stared at him. "This is supposed to be our room."

We'd decorated it together for our wedding. Every piece of furniture, every lamp, every curtain had been picked out by the two of us, and Grant had built the cradle for our future child with his own hands. Now he wanted to hand the room to another woman.

His answer came as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. "We aren't getting married for a while anyway. None of it's being used. Chloe needs it more right now."

He'd already decided I wouldn't argue. I never did. I never made scenes. I never made his life harder.

Grant sighed. "She's pregnant. Just give her this one thing. Once the baby's born, I'll marry you and give all of it back."

I looked at him for a long moment. "Fine."

Relief loosened his shoulders. "Thank you. I knew you'd understand. Serena, I swear I'll make this up to you."

He didn't know that in two days, I'd be gone. There was no "after this" for us.

While I was moving my things, I happened to pass Chloe's doorway. She stood just inside with her arms folded, and as I went by she lowered her voice so only I could hear. "See it now, Serena? Grant only has room in his heart for me."

I quietly wiped the corner of my eye and kept walking.

The little room by the staff quarters was silent that night. A crack ran across the ceiling, from the light fixture all the way to the corner of the wall. Through the floor above me, I could hear Chloe laughing and Grant talking — he was reading stories to the baby in her stomach, his voice coming through the ceiling muffled and warm.

I had no idea how long I'd been lying awake when the door opened and Grant stepped inside.

"I knew you weren't asleep. You never sleep well in a new place." He sat beside me and pulled me into his arms. "I know this isn't fair to you. But you have to understand, Chloe really needs somebody right now. Just do me this favor. Once I get through all of this, I'll give you anything you want."

I looked at him. "Can you stay with me tonight? Because…"

Because I'd be leaving soon. The rest of the sentence caught in my throat, so instead I wrapped my arms around him.

Grant went still for a moment. Then he said, "Okay."

He lay down beside me and held me, his hand resting casually over my lower abdomen. He still didn't know I was pregnant, and that one small touch made my chest ache. For a moment it almost felt like the life we'd planned.

It didn't last. Someone started pounding on the door and Grant went out.

A few minutes later he rushed back in, his expression grim. "Serena, Chloe says her stomach hurts. I have to get her to the hospital. It's urgent. You'll have to sleep on your own tonight."

The commotion had jolted me so hard that pain was twisting through my own abdomen now. I grabbed his sleeve. "Grant, my stomach hurts too. Please… can you take me to the hospital?"

Annoyance flashed across his face. "Are you seriously still doing this? I told you, you only have to wait a few months. I'll make all of it up to you afterward. What are you trying to prove?"

"I—"

"Forget it. Chloe's situation is actually urgent. I don't have time to argue with you. Stay home and get some sleep."

"Grant…"

I called his name again and again. All he had to do was turn around once — if he had, he'd have seen how pale I was. There was a time when I could scrape my skin and whisper that it hurt, and Grant would come apart. Now he walked away without even looking back.

The pain in my stomach sharpened and my vision blurred. I bit down hard and refused to let myself pass out until I'd managed to call an ambulance. Only after I heard the dispatcher answer did I finally lose consciousness.

I watched Grant crouched outside the gates, and the memories came without warning.Once, he'd been the reason I walked out through the Cross family gates and never looked back. I'd fought with my father for him. I'd given up my place as the Cross heiress to live an ordinary life at his side. Back then Grant had been young and full of himself, and he'd held my hand and promised, "Serena, I'm going to make you the happiest woman in the world."Now he sat outside those same gates looking like a stray somebody had abandoned.I watched him, and to my own surprise, I felt completely calm.Just then a black sedan pulled up beside the entrance. The rear door opened and a tall man got out. He glanced at Grant, one eyebrow lifting slightly, then walked to the gate and rang the bell.A staff member came to open it. Before he went in, the man paused and looked down at Grant. "Excuse me. You're blocking the entrance."Grant raised his head, his face streaked with tears. The man smiled. It wa

  • Pregnant, and He Married Her Instead   Chapter 7

When Chloe was brought into the living room, I barely recognized her. Her clothes were filthy, her hair was tied back carelessly, her skin looked sallow, and dark circles bruised the space under her eyes. The baby in her arms was crying from hunger. The moment she saw me, Chloe dropped to her knees. "Serena, I was wrong. I know I was wrong." Her lips trembled as she cried. "Please forgive me. I'll do anything. Just give my mother and me a way to live. I don't even have a place to stay with the baby anymore."I looked at her and felt no pity."Chloe," I said, "you manipulated your way into the Hale estate. You took over my room. You flaunted how well Grant treated you while my own baby didn't have a decent place to grow."When your mother and Diane tried to force me to abort my child, where were you?" I leaned forward slightly. "You were curled up next to Grant, smiling. Weren't you?"Chloe lowered her head until she was almost pressed against the floor."And now you come here hol

I turned away with my suitcase and Dad opened the car door for me."Serena!" Grant's voice chased after me, raw and hoarse. "Don't go. You can't just leave like this. Tell me what happened.""Go to hell." I didn't turn around.Grant tried to follow. Diane grabbed his arm. "Grant, have you lost your mind? Chloe and the baby are right here. Why are you chasing after her?""Let go of me!" Grant ripped his arm away. He looked half crazed. "Nothing ever happened between Chloe and me. She begged me to help hide who the father was, so I agreed to marry her. That child has nothing to do with me. Serena was carrying my baby."Diane's face went blank. "What did you just say? Chloe's baby isn't yours?"The car door closed and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror I saw Grant standing in the road, and then he crouched down and buried his head in his hands. Diane stayed frozen behind him, as though lightning had struck her.I looked away. "Dad, starting today, cut off every Cross resource g

Diane Hale froze. Then she burst out laughing."Are you out of your mind? Grant told us himself that Chloe is carrying his baby. Who do you think you are? You think you're good enough to carry a Hale?"Lorraine came out of the house behind her. "Don't bother arguing with her. A woman with no father, no family, and no background loses a baby and suddenly wants to throw a tantrum and latch onto the Hales. It's pathetic."I said nothing and put the last few pieces of clothing in my suitcase. At that moment a black sedan pulled into the drive. Grant got out of the driver's seat, walked around to the rear door and opened it, and Chloe stepped out carrying a newborn.Grant leaned down and tucked the edge of the baby's blanket in around him, his hands unbelievably gentle. Then he looked up and our eyes met, and the smile vanished from his face."Serena?"He rushed toward me, his gaze moving from my face to the suitcase beside me. "You're back? What is this? Where have you been?"I ign

When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed. There were two people standing beside me and I recoiled on instinct. "Don't touch me! Get away from me!""Serena! Serena, you're awake!"My mother's voice cut through the panic. I turned sharply and saw her swollen, red-rimmed eyes, my father standing behind her.Mom rushed forward and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, her whole body trembling. "You scared me to death. You lost so much blood…"Blood.I looked down at my stomach. It was too early in the pregnancy for anything to show, but I knew. I knew something was gone. My hand shook as I pressed my palm to my abdomen. Soft. Flat. Empty."Where's my baby?" I asked.Mom opened her mouth. Tears spilled down her face, but she couldn't force out a word.Dad stepped forward. "The doctor said…" His voice was hoarse. "Your body was under too much stress. Between the shock and the struggle in the hospital… you miscarried."I stared at him for three seconds, then closed my eyes.

  • Pregnant, and He Married Her Instead   Chapter 3

When I woke up, I was in a hospital room. The doctors had already examined me. The pain had come from exhaustion and lack of rest, and the baby was fine. Relief flooded through me.A moment later a message came in from my father. He was almost here.I didn't hesitate. I got dressed and started the discharge paperwork right away. The obstetrician walked me to the door and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat. "Try not to worry. You're healthy, and the pregnancy's progressing normally. Take care of yourself and there's every reason to expect a healthy baby.""Thank you, doctor." I smiled."You're pregnant?"The shrill voice came from behind me. I turned. Diane Hale was standing there, Lorraine Bennett beside her. Before I could answer, Diane stormed forward and snatched the papers out of my hand. The moment she saw the pregnancy confirmation, fury twisted her face and her palm cracked across my cheek.I had no time to brace myself. My head snapped to the side, and the metallic tast
