Chapter 1

Ferrari
The same day I found out I was pregnant, I walked out of my appointment and saw my fiancé, Grant Hale, sitting in on a prenatal checkup with his childhood sweetheart, Chloe Bennett.

"Grant, feel that. The baby kicked me," Chloe said.

Grant bent down and pressed his ear against her rounded stomach, smiling.

A second later, a nurse hurried after me, calling my name and waving the test results I'd left behind.

Grant's head snapped up and our eyes met. The smile on his face froze. He rushed over and grabbed my arm.

"Serena? What are you doing here?"

"Getting checked out." I kept my voice as steady as I could.

"Are you sick?" His gaze dropped straight to the papers in my hand.

I didn't answer. I looked past him at Chloe, who had one hand cupped protectively over her stomach.

"Whose baby is it?" I asked.

Chloe smiled at me, and there was something unmistakably triumphant in it. "It's Grant's. He's very excited about it."

I bit down hard on my lower lip. The moment Grant saw the color drain from my face, he reached for my hand.

"Serena, you've got it wrong. Chloe's baby isn't mine. I was just worried about her coming here alone, so I came with her."

"Then why is she telling me it's yours?"

I wanted to give him a chance to explain. Instead, Grant looked away.

"Because…" He hesitated. "Chloe can't do this alone. Her father already told her he'd cut her off if she embarrassed the family. So I'm going to marry her. If everyone thinks the baby's mine, nobody asks questions."

He took my hand again. "Just give me a few months, okay? Let people believe the baby's mine until Chloe gives birth. After that I'll explain everything to the family. I'll make it up to you, I promise."

Before I could answer, Chloe grabbed his sleeve and burst into tears. "Grant, you promised you'd give me and the baby a home. Are you taking that back because of Serena?"

Grant turned to comfort her. "I'm not taking anything back. I gave you my word." Then his voice softened even further. "And the doctor said your pregnancy's unstable. Stop getting worked up. You could hurt the baby."

Chloe's tears fell faster. "If Serena won't agree, then I'll leave with my baby. I'd rather disappear than stay here as the family disgrace and watch my child grow up as the kid nobody would claim."

"As long as I'm here, nobody is going to touch you or your child," Grant said firmly.

Only after calming her down did he look at me again, and this time his face carried a hint of exhaustion, as though I were the one making things difficult.

"Serena, you can see Chloe needs more help than you do. Everyone already knows you're with me. Nobody would dare disrespect you. Even if people talk for a few months, just let it go. Once I take over Hale Group, you'll be Mrs. Hale. That's yours."

My hands curled into fists. "But I'm pregnant too," I said. "If you marry her, what happens to our baby?"

Grant stared at me for a second, then his brows pulled together. "Serena, this isn't the time to say things just because you're angry."

He didn't believe me. And after scolding me, he lowered his voice again, as though he were patiently soothing a difficult child.

"You've always been the sensible one. You're not fragile like Chloe. Even if you were pregnant, you could wait a few months. You'd be fine. Once Chloe has the baby, I'll give you the wedding you deserve. All right?"

Sensible. That was what I'd always been to him. The woman who would understand. The woman who would wait. The woman who would never cause trouble.

What Grant didn't know was that three years ago, I'd walked away from the Cross family for him. I'd given up my place as the heiress to one of the most powerful mafia families in the country and made a deal with my father: if Grant and I failed to marry before the three years were up, I'd go home and leave him forever.

I gave a bitter little laugh and said nothing.

Grant took my silence as agreement, and relief crossed his face. "Come on. I'll drive you home."

He put an arm around my shoulders and hurried me toward the parking lot, as though he couldn't wait to get out of there.

Chloe followed us. She opened the front passenger door and climbed in without hesitating, and there was a thick cushion on the seat that hadn't been there before.

Chloe looked back at me with a smile. "Don't mind me, Serena. My back's been hurting, so Grant bought this specially for me."

Grant opened the rear door for me without a word. Then he leaned toward Chloe. "Put your seat belt on."

"It squeezes my stomach," she complained with a pout.

Grant frowned, then reached over and adjusted the seat for her. "Fine. There."

Chloe caught my eyes in the rearview mirror, and the corner of her mouth lifted. "Grant, you're so good to me. Serena isn't going to misunderstand, is she?"

Grant didn't even hesitate. "Don't worry. Serena doesn't think like that. She's always been sensible."

Sensible. There was that word again.

I looked out the window. When the car stopped at the next red light, I took out my phone and sent a message.

Dad, I lost. Just like we agreed, I'm coming home.

His reply came almost immediately.

Good. We'll come get you in three days. It's time the Cross family heiress came home.

I watched Grant crouched outside the gates, and the memories came without warning.Once, he'd been the reason I walked out through the Cross family gates and never looked back. I'd fought with my father for him. I'd given up my place as the Cross heiress to live an ordinary life at his side. Back then Grant had been young and full of himself, and he'd held my hand and promised, "Serena, I'm going to make you the happiest woman in the world."Now he sat outside those same gates looking like a stray somebody had abandoned.I watched him, and to my own surprise, I felt completely calm.Just then a black sedan pulled up beside the entrance. The rear door opened and a tall man got out. He glanced at Grant, one eyebrow lifting slightly, then walked to the gate and rang the bell.A staff member came to open it. Before he went in, the man paused and looked down at Grant. "Excuse me. You're blocking the entrance."Grant raised his head, his face streaked with tears. The man smiled. It wa

When Chloe was brought into the living room, I barely recognized her. Her clothes were filthy, her hair was tied back carelessly, her skin looked sallow, and dark circles bruised the space under her eyes. The baby in her arms was crying from hunger. The moment she saw me, Chloe dropped to her knees. "Serena, I was wrong. I know I was wrong." Her lips trembled as she cried. "Please forgive me. I'll do anything. Just give my mother and me a way to live. I don't even have a place to stay with the baby anymore."I looked at her and felt no pity."Chloe," I said, "you manipulated your way into the Hale estate. You took over my room. You flaunted how well Grant treated you while my own baby didn't have a decent place to grow."When your mother and Diane tried to force me to abort my child, where were you?" I leaned forward slightly. "You were curled up next to Grant, smiling. Weren't you?"Chloe lowered her head until she was almost pressed against the floor."And now you come here hol

I turned away with my suitcase and Dad opened the car door for me."Serena!" Grant's voice chased after me, raw and hoarse. "Don't go. You can't just leave like this. Tell me what happened.""Go to hell." I didn't turn around.Grant tried to follow. Diane grabbed his arm. "Grant, have you lost your mind? Chloe and the baby are right here. Why are you chasing after her?""Let go of me!" Grant ripped his arm away. He looked half crazed. "Nothing ever happened between Chloe and me. She begged me to help hide who the father was, so I agreed to marry her. That child has nothing to do with me. Serena was carrying my baby."Diane's face went blank. "What did you just say? Chloe's baby isn't yours?"The car door closed and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror I saw Grant standing in the road, and then he crouched down and buried his head in his hands. Diane stayed frozen behind him, as though lightning had struck her.I looked away. "Dad, starting today, cut off every Cross resource g

Diane Hale froze. Then she burst out laughing."Are you out of your mind? Grant told us himself that Chloe is carrying his baby. Who do you think you are? You think you're good enough to carry a Hale?"Lorraine came out of the house behind her. "Don't bother arguing with her. A woman with no father, no family, and no background loses a baby and suddenly wants to throw a tantrum and latch onto the Hales. It's pathetic."I said nothing and put the last few pieces of clothing in my suitcase. At that moment a black sedan pulled into the drive. Grant got out of the driver's seat, walked around to the rear door and opened it, and Chloe stepped out carrying a newborn.Grant leaned down and tucked the edge of the baby's blanket in around him, his hands unbelievably gentle. Then he looked up and our eyes met, and the smile vanished from his face."Serena?"He rushed toward me, his gaze moving from my face to the suitcase beside me. "You're back? What is this? Where have you been?"I ign

When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed. There were two people standing beside me and I recoiled on instinct. "Don't touch me! Get away from me!""Serena! Serena, you're awake!"My mother's voice cut through the panic. I turned sharply and saw her swollen, red-rimmed eyes, my father standing behind her.Mom rushed forward and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, her whole body trembling. "You scared me to death. You lost so much blood…"Blood.I looked down at my stomach. It was too early in the pregnancy for anything to show, but I knew. I knew something was gone. My hand shook as I pressed my palm to my abdomen. Soft. Flat. Empty."Where's my baby?" I asked.Mom opened her mouth. Tears spilled down her face, but she couldn't force out a word.Dad stepped forward. "The doctor said…" His voice was hoarse. "Your body was under too much stress. Between the shock and the struggle in the hospital… you miscarried."I stared at him for three seconds, then closed my eyes.

  • Pregnant, and He Married Her Instead   Chapter 3

When I woke up, I was in a hospital room. The doctors had already examined me. The pain had come from exhaustion and lack of rest, and the baby was fine. Relief flooded through me.A moment later a message came in from my father. He was almost here.I didn't hesitate. I got dressed and started the discharge paperwork right away. The obstetrician walked me to the door and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat. "Try not to worry. You're healthy, and the pregnancy's progressing normally. Take care of yourself and there's every reason to expect a healthy baby.""Thank you, doctor." I smiled."You're pregnant?"The shrill voice came from behind me. I turned. Diane Hale was standing there, Lorraine Bennett beside her. Before I could answer, Diane stormed forward and snatched the papers out of my hand. The moment she saw the pregnancy confirmation, fury twisted her face and her palm cracked across my cheek.I had no time to brace myself. My head snapped to the side, and the metallic tast
