The same day I found out I was pregnant, I walked out of my appointment and saw my fiancé, Grant Hale, sitting in on a prenatal checkup with his childhood sweetheart, Chloe Bennett."Grant, feel that. Early the next morning, Chloe Bennett and her mother moved into the Hale estate.Lorraine Bennett stood in the middle of the living room ordering the staff around. The moment she saw me coming down the stairs, she gave an ugly little snort. "Oh, you're still here? Aren't you embarrassed? A penniless woman with no family, clinging to somebody else's house like she owns it."Satisfaction flashed through Chloe's eyes, though she tugged lightly on her mother's sleeve. When I woke up, I was in a hospital room.The doctors had already examined me. The pain had come from exhaustion and lack of rest, and the baby was fine. Relief flooded through me.A moment later a message came in from my father. He was almost here.I didn't hesitate. I got dressed and started the discharge paperwork right away.The obstetrician walked me to the door and gave my shoulder a reassuring pat. "Try not to worry. You're healthy, and the pregnancy's progressing normally. Take care of yourself and there's every reason to expect a healthy baby.""Thank you, doctor." When I woke again, I was lying in a hospital bed.There were two people standing beside me and I recoiled on instinct. "Don't touch me! Get away from me!""Serena! Serena, you're awake!"My mother's voice cut through the panic. I turned sharply and saw her swollen, red-rimmed eyes, my father standing behind her.Mom rushed forward and wrapped her arms around my shoulders, her whole body trembling. "You scared me to death. You lost so much blood…"Blood.I looked down at my stomach. It was too early in the pregnancy for anything to show, but I knew. I knew something was gone. My hand shook as I pressed my palm to my abdomen. Soft. Flat. Empty."Where's my baby?" I asked.Mom opened her mouth. Tears spilled down her face, but she couldn't force out a word.Dad stepped forward. "The doctor said…" His voice was hoarse. "Your body was under too much stress. Between the shock and the struggle in the hospital… you miscarried."I stared at him for three seconds, then closed my eyes.

Diane Hale froze. Then she burst out laughing."Are you out of your mind? Grant told us himself that Chloe is carrying his baby. Who do you think you are? You think you're good enough to carry a Hale?"Lorraine came out of the house behind her. "Don't bother arguing with her. A woman with no father, no family, and no background loses a baby and suddenly wants to throw a tantrum and latch onto the Hales. It's pathetic."I said nothing and put the last few pieces of clothing in my suitcase.At that moment a black sedan pulled into the drive. Grant got out of the driver's seat, walked around to the rear door and opened it, and Chloe stepped out carrying a newborn.Grant leaned down and tucked the edge of the baby's blanket in around him, his hands unbelievably gentle. Then he looked up and our eyes met, and the smile vanished from his face."Serena?"He rushed toward me, his gaze moving from my face to the suitcase beside me. "You're back? What is this? I turned away with my suitcase and Dad opened the car door for me."Serena!" Grant's voice chased after me, raw and hoarse. "Don't go. You can't just leave like this. Tell me what happened.""Go to hell." I didn't turn around.Grant tried to follow. Diane grabbed his arm. "Grant, have you lost your mind? Chloe and the baby are right here. Why are you chasing after her?""Let go of me!" Grant ripped his arm away. He looked half crazed. "Nothing ever happened between Chloe and me. She begged me to help hide who the father was, so I agreed to marry her. That child has nothing to do with me. Serena was carrying my baby."Diane's face went blank. "What did you just say? Chloe's baby isn't yours?"The car door closed and we pulled away. In the rearview mirror I saw Grant standing in the road, and then he crouched down and buried his head in his hands. When Chloe was brought into the living room, I barely recognized her. Her clothes were filthy, her hair was tied back carelessly, her skin looked sallow, and dark circles bruised the space under her eyes. The baby in her arms was crying from hunger.The moment she saw me, Chloe dropped to her knees. "Serena, I was wrong. I know I was wrong." Her lips trembled as she cried. "Please forgive me. I'll do anything. Just give my mother and me a way to live. I don't even have a place to stay with the baby anymore."I looked at her and felt no pity."Chloe," I said, "you manipulated your way into the Hale estate. You took over my room.
