Chapter 1
Elena’s POV
My breath simmered, and I felt ecstatic for no reason. A sudden purge of strength well up in me, and I felt a little restless. My wolf growled in my head, panting and jerking. I don't know what it is, but something feels terribly wrong, and I can't place a finger on it.
“I'm sure it's nothing but nervousness.” I muttered under my breath. A knock came on the door, distracting me from my thoughts.
“Elena, your dress is here.” I heard Lisa's voice and jumped out of the bed excitedly. Today is my eighteenth birthday, and I have never been more excited in my life.
“Come in, Lisa!” I sang my words, and the door opened. I frowned, seeing the gown was all covered.
“Open it,” I grabbed the zipper of the cloth bag, and she snatched it away from me.
“Be careful Elena, you do not want to ruin your birthday dress. This is one of the most important ages you will turn in life. Every age has its significance and comes with something special.” Lisa began her lecture, and I just sat there on the bed listening to her.
“When you turned sixteen, you met your wolf. Now you are turning eighteen, you might just meet your mate.” Lisa said, and my heartbeat accelerated at the mention of that word, mate.
It felt as though something in me was being called and pulled away. A part of me seemed to be somewhere, lost and buried. I shivered, my breath heavy and fast.
“Elena are you okay?” Lisa asked worriedly.
“It's nothing, I've just been feeling a certain type of way since I woke up this morning. I'm sure it's because of my birthday. I'm really nervous about the party.” I said, discarding the feeling.
“Are you sure? You seemed quite shaken just now. Tell me if you are not feeling well. We can always postpone the birthday party.” Lisa said, and I shrugged.
“Nonsense! Why would you do something like that. We put in a lot into organising this party. Tell me, are the guests arriving? What of Father?” I asked her dismissing the previous topic.
“None of them have arrived yet, but they will soon. That's why you need to get ready as well.” Lisa said, and I nodded my head in agreement.
Finally, we were done with dressing me up. I looked beautiful in the short sleeveless gown. The golden jewellery sat perfectly on my neck, dropping down to my cleavage.
Lisa escorted me to the garden where my party was being held. The red and purple decorations lightened up the atmosphere and of my mood as well.
My father is one of the council elders, and so my family is a titled one in the pack.
“You look beautiful!” One of the boys complimented, and I smiled at him. The party started, and I didn't know if I was just in my feelings. But something felt wrong this night, and I don't know what.
It's the same feeling I've been having since this morning. I felt my breath seized, and I could barely lift my head up.
My stomach twisted in a knot, and I knew I had to retreat to my room.
“Lisa! I will be in my room in case anyone needs me.” I whispered into her ears and walked away. I was not about to let her scold me for walking out of my own party.
I pushed the door to my room open and slumped on the bed. I felt suffocated and restless. I sat up, but I still didn't feel calm.
My wolf whimpered in my head, and I panicked.
“What's wrong, Keila?” I asked her, but she said nothing to me.
“Now is not the time for you to go silent on me. Something is happening, and I need to know what the problem is. What's happening?” I asked her, but she kept panting.
All of a sudden, I felt my claws extending and my body growing heavy. Keila is willing to take over, which can only mean she wants to go for a run in the woods.
I didn't bother stopping her. Maybe it's one of those things you experience when you turn eighteen. I contemplated going through the front door.
“No… That's a bad idea, Lisa and Father won't let me leave.” I concluded and looked out the window. The garden is on the other side, so no one would see me leave if I were to go out right now.
I exhaled sharply and placed one of my legs out the window. I did the same with the second one. And with a push, I jumped out the window. My body hit the rough ground slightly, and I rolled over.
I peeped to see if there was no one lurking around. Good thing we don't have much staff. Immediately, I tiptoed out of the house gate successfully, I ran as fast as my legs could carry me.
I made it to the woods, running and yelling.
Damn…
I have never felt better. This must be the reason why I have been moody all day. My wolf just wanted to have some fun. I thought about the party going on at my house, but shunned the thoughts.
They can go on and have fun without me. This is what my wolf wants. I brought myself to a stop and surrendered by a big tree. The squirrels and birds ran off seeing a wolf, but I only giggled at them.
Suddenly, the full moon shone over me, and I felt excitement shoot up in my bones. My blood boiled in my vein, and I felt a snap in my heart.
Strength, agility, and raw emotions welled up in me, and I felt so powerful. It felt as though I was munching on something very powerful.
My eyes became wet with tears, and my wolf panted hard in my head. I turned around and began to sniff the air, looking for a piece of me carried by someone else.
A stranger appeared in front of me, and I felt a sharp pull within my very core.
“Mate!” Those fragile words escaped my lips.
31DeanIt’s been two years since the final battle with Ryan, but it seemed like it’s just been two days. Freya’s father was buried, and her brothers came to apologize for how badly they treated her. She forgave them but never went back home. There was no need for that, actually, since we got married last year. The pack was thriving, and everyone was happy. Our pack was no longer a formidable place that everyone was afraid of. Instead, it became a haven where anyone who needed shelter could come. Freya was loved by all, especially the children. She was my pride and everything to me.Here I stood, waiting outside our room, unable to bear the pain she was going through since she was giving birth to our firstborn.I kept pacing, looking at the door for anyone to come out with the good news. This had been going on for the past ten hours. I just wanted her to be out of pain. It was beginning to drive me crazy.Suddenly, the door opened, and one of the ladies came out. “How is she?” I quick
30Freya“What do you mean?” I cried out in fear. “Try to stand up, please!”I hurried toward him, but something prevented me from being able to reach out to him. It was surrounding him, preventing me from being able to help him. I figured it was the red circle around him.“I’m trying,” he retorted. I watched him to try to rise, only to crash back onto the floor.Ryan laughed at us. “You both are so sweet to watch. But I’m afraid this is where your silly love story ends.”Ryan walked toward me; the victorious look on his face was unmistakable.“This is the part where Dean watches me, dearie,” he said to me as I walked backward.“Don’t dare touch her!” Dean shouted.“I’m going to touch her, rape her, and you will do nothing about it,” Ryan blurted. Just the way you weren’t able to do anything about your dead pack members and dead parents, Dean!”Dean snarled in anger. “You, bastard! Don’t you dare, Ryan!”Ryan seemed a bit provoked and then turned away from me, towards him. “And what i
29FreyaI opened my eyes with great difficulty. Every part of me ached terribly, and the back of my head throbbed painfully. I tried to make sense of my surroundings by looking around but was suddenly aware of my former apartment. I was in Dean’s old room. How did I get here?I straightened up to discover I was lying on the bare floor. My eyes caught sight of the dead body by my feet. Seeing who it was, a cry escaped my lips. It was the body of my father! I rushed to him.“Father!”His eyes were blank, with blood oozing out of his nostrils and mouth. I could feel my heart breaking into tiny pieces at the sight. Even though he had maltreated me, seeing him dead like this was not something I wished for. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I held on to him.“Father!”“You know he can’t hear you,” Ryan chuckled behind me as he walked in. “Your father is long gone, my dear.”“You bastard! You killed my father!” I shouted. “Your fight is with me. Why did you have to kill him?”Ryan shrugged
28Dean“Any sign of him?” I asked as Brad returned with the men.“No. We’ve checked all the hidden places and the labs,” he replied. I was disappointed and worried at the same time.I didn’t imagine my day would go like this. Freya and I had been perfectly happy on our picnic. It was the break I needed to spend time together, but the news of Ryan lurking around had ruined all my plans. Brad had come that morning to tell me some of the men had seen Ryan. Two dead bodies were also found in the woods. That was enough evidence to prove that the bastard was back.I should have expected he would come for revenge. How did I overlook that? I could have come up with some security measures in time to ensure he wouldn’t be able to get in. When did I become so narrow-minded and careless?Things were just going smoothly with the pack and with Freya, and now, things could go wrong.“What do you think we should do now?” Brad asked me quietly. We were at the border, along with several of the men. “I
27FreyaI felt like my life was just beginning. I have never been happier than the last couple of weeks spent in the company of Dean. Gradually, I got used to being mated to him, and the whole pack was aware.I got closer to the members of the pack, who were now addressing me as their Luna. It was a new and beautiful experience. Often, the kids would come around to spend time with me, and I made sure to always be available for them. Having them close to me filled me with happiness. That evening, I was alone with Dean on a picnic. We had decided to spend some time away from the rest of the pack and had chosen the mountainside for our picnic. My head rested on his lap while he fed me some grapes. Now and then, he planted on my lips several kisses that would make me giggle out loud.“You’re so naughty, you know that?” he remarked.“Yes, I’m naughty for you,” I winked at him, and we both laughed. “Don’t you think we should head back home?”“Why?” he asked, munching on an apple.“We’ve be
26FreyaAs I walked in, the thought of what had just happened clouded my mind. How did I end up marking him when he hadn’t even accepted me as his mate? I was angry at myself for being so stupid. All the while, I was looking at the floor, lost in my own thoughts. As I made my way through the crowd, my eyes fell on a group of women who were chuckling and giggling as I walked past. That was weird.I motioned towards the waiter by the window, several feet away from me. Yet, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that someone was looking at me. It was almost the same way I had felt back in Ryan’s house. Then, I felt like someone was watching me. I looked around but caught several eyes instead. Some were whispering and smiling, while others only looked at me with envy.I spotted Peter talking with another lady, and instead of coming over to me, he simply raised his glass and winked. What was happening?I emptied the glass in one gulp while still looking around to ensure that this whole thing wa
