“So, hii. I’m Ashley Fred, your surrogate, baby mama, and personal nanny. Lol.”

I stared at the man lying in front of me.

“Okay, that sounded much worse out loud.”

Skyler Tylan remained completely unbothered.

“Anyway, I know you can’t hear me or anything, but I thought it would be nice to introduce myself. What about you? Who are you, aside from being a billionaire heir who got into a car accident and ended up in a coma?”

I paused, waiting for an answer.

Nothing.

“Right. Forgot who I was talking to.”

I pulled my chair closer to the bed and rested my arms on the armrests.

“I tried looking you up online, by the way. I thought I’d find enough information to prepare myself for this little arrangement, but there’s barely anything about your accident. Which is strange, considering your family apparently owns half the world.”

I glanced at him.

“Don’t worry, though. I’m not here to investigate your life. I just hope we get along.”

My gaze wandered around the room before returning to his face.

“Actually, I hope we hit it off nicely, I do what I came here to do, and we all go our separate ways without any complications. That would be perfect.”

I nodded to myself.

Perfect. Simple. Straightforward.

Then another thought occurred to me.

“Wait a minute. Am I talking too much?”

I looked towards the door, then at the ceiling.

“What if there’s a camera in here?”

Considering how ridiculously wealthy this family was, installing cameras everywhere wouldn’t exactly surprise me.

And if there was one, what impression had I made so far?

I’d practically told Skyler’s mother my entire heartbreak story before I’d even realised who she was. Now I was sitting in her son’s hospital room, introducing myself as his baby mama and nanny like I’d lost all sense of decorum.

Wonderful.

I pressed my lips together.

“Okay, Ashley. New plan. From now on, we’re going to be reserved, calm, and docile.”

I held up a finger.

“Especially docile.”

Then I sat back and took another look at Skyler.

Well, this was awkward.

The man was dangerously handsome.

Even lying unconscious, he had the sort of face that would make people stare twice. His features were sharply defined, his jaw firm, and his dark hair neatly arranged against the pillow. There was something strikingly composed about his face, although the stillness of his expression made him seem almost intimidating.

He looked cold.

Not the ordinary kind of cold, either. More like the sort of man who could silence an entire boardroom with one look.

Not bad, Mr Tylan.

Not bad at all.

I was still examining his face when the door opened, and several members of the medical team walked in.

I immediately straightened in my chair.

The doctor approached Skyler’s bed while a nurse checked his monitors. Another reviewed his chart, asking the doctor a few questions in low voices. They checked his vital signs, examined his condition, and adjusted something near his bedside.

I watched quietly, trying to understand what they were doing without looking like an overly curious visitor.

At one point, the doctor leaned towards Skyler and called his name, checking for a response. There was none.

The nurse recorded something on the chart.

Nobody addressed me.

Nobody explained what they were checking or whether there had been any changes in his condition. They simply continued with their work as though I were another piece of furniture in the room.

I sat there, my hands folded in my lap.

So much for being part of the arrangement.

Eventually, the doctor gave a few instructions to the nurse, and the team began packing up.

“Is there anything I should know about his condition?” I asked before they left.
