LOGINROMAN.
“What the hell are you doing?”
August’s voice is the first thing that greets me as I walk through the doors. Don’t get me wrong, August is my friend and he’s usually a pleasant presence, but right now I just want him to leave me alone. Unfortunately for me, he follows me even to my chambers.
I exhale sharply. “Come on, Auggie. Don’t you think it’s a bit weird that you followed me all the way to my bedroom?”
“I only did that because you’ve been gone all day!” he hisses, closing the door behind him. “Do you know what hell I’ve gone through dealing with the Alphas asking where the hell the King is on his thirtieth birthday? I was tempted to put on your armor and pretend you want to joust or something!”
A grin etches on my lips. “That would have been fun to see.”
“This is serious, Roman.” August’s face turns dark. When he calls me by my name and not my title, I do know that it’s indeed serious. “Every Alpha was angry and they were demanding answers about the north.”
Immediately, my mood sours.
Of course those fuckers would demand that. Do they think I know what happened there? Do they think I know what’s still happening there?
It’s been ten years since my father died from a mission in the north of Terra Lycaon. The sun never shines there, just constant darkness and dropping temperatures. He brought a team of Alphas with him to investigate the attacks happening there, but only one made it out alive, his best friend Janus, another Alpha.
Ten years, and no one has attempted to go back there to know what went down. Janus himself doesn’t want to go, claiming that what happened there was a nightmare that he would rather forget.
The attacks on the northern packs have calmed down over the years, only for them to pick right up again for the past ten months or so.
So far, two packs have been attacked, with fifty people dead.
I sit on the bed and take off my shoes. “They want answers… and yet when I volunteer to go there myself, everyone wants me to sit it out. When I ask for volunteers, no one wants to go. What the fuck do they want me to do?”
August falls silent, and I know he shares my frustration. I’ve been backed up on a wall over here for months. It’s tiring.
It’s the exact same reason why I spent some time in the Human world. Just to escape for a while. I wanted to throw money at some stupid shit and end up in bed with a few Human girls, who have always been eager to get fucked. It’s perfect too, because as an Alpha, I could never get them pregnant.
I have done this for years. I have been in bed with countless Human women, not just the ones I like to watch for their shows. Even just women who throw themselves at me wherever I go. But tonight… it was different.
The woman I met was different.
I don’t know her real name. All I know is that her stage name was Red, maybe because of her flaming red hair. Big tits, perfect ass, that pretty face… Fuck. I knew when I laid eyes on her that I wanted her under me, scratching my back and moaning my name.
I really thought I was going to get that too. I was making her come and I knew she wanted me to fuck her, but she suddenly just jumped away from me and left me high and dry.
Fuck, I could’ve gone to another woman. I could’ve have picked up someone else. But I didn’t feel the need to, at that moment.
All I wanted is her.
And I still want her.
I take a deep breath. Her scent is still on me. For some reason it’s making me even more restless than I already am.
I wish I knew why she left.
“I’ll have a meeting for everyone tomorrow,” I tell August. “Send out the memo, and I will answer all their questions. I’ll go to the north this time too, if it means shutting them the fuck up.”
He doesn’t move. “My King, at least let me come with you when you do. But I do think that shouldn’t go. They’re right about that, we just have to think of another way.”
I shake my head. “There’s no other way. Those Alphas are just going to keep running their mouths until someone does it. Better me than a group of poor men who have no choice but to follow orders.”
August doesn’t say anything. He just lowers his head. I take off my jacket, ready to dismiss him and get to bed, but then he gasps when I throw my jacket to the floor.
“Why is there blood on your shirt?”
I look down in confusion, only to see that the entire left side of my shirt is drenched in blood. Not my blood, that’s for sure. It’s Human blood, courtesy of the idiot that tried to rob me on my way to the strip club.
Then it hits me at lightning speed.
“That’s why she left.”
“Who?” August crosses the room and stands in front of me. “Who left? Have you been messing with Humans again? Roman, this is insanity!”
“It’s fine,” I grit out, unbuttoning my shirt. “Don’t be such a fuss. I’ll burn it and no one would know.”
I discard my shirt as well, lumping it in with the jacket and tossing it into the fireplace. I thought August would walk away this time, but he stays there staring at me. For some reason, he looks more shocked than when he saw the blood. I cock an eyebrow, only for him to point at the tattoo on my chest.
Every male wolf gets branded with their house sigil on their thirteenth birthday. It’s not just a rite of passage. It can turn from red to black, when we first touch our fated partners. Female wolves get theirs on the wrist on their eighteenth birthday, to make sure they remain pure. My tattoo is a raven above crossed swords, the sigil of the Medeiros House.
And right now, it’s burning black, like a burst of smoke on my skin.
“Alpha Roman.” August’s eyes are with reverence. “You have been touched by your mate.”
Immediately, I know that I need to go back to the Human world and find that girl again.
This time, I will make her mine.
MONICA.ONE YEAR LATER.“Roman, will you be careful?” I ask in an exasperated voice as Roman picks up our son from his crib and starts to raise him to the air like he’s some sort of a relic. “If that child gets shaken….”“Come on, he’s not a normal baby,” Roman reasons out, making faces. “Aren’t you, boy? Look at his eyes. Look at his legs. This one’s going to be a warrior!”“Yesterday, you said he’s going to be a smart bookish king when he recognized the word I was saying,” I point out, and Roman laughs.Things are amazing now. I gave birth to our baby half a year ago, and every day, he grows stronger. He grows bigger. He’s the light of our lives. Our little Gabriel. It was Roman’s idea to name him after the boy who sacrificed his life to save me, and it just felt so right.I watch Roman take Gabriel into his arms, dancing him around. It’s a view that I can get used to seeing every single day, but our baby is growing fast. I know that soon enough, he’s not even going to fit in Roman’s
MONICA.I just feel his weight being lifted off me like it was nothing, and when I open my eyes, I find Gabriel there in the room, grabbing Deimos by the collar and throwing him against the wall. Deimos falls to the ground, getting up like nothing happened and kicking Gabriel in the stomach. But Gabriel retaliates with a punch that splits Deimos's lip. He spits blood on the ground and tries to fight back, but Gabriel seems to be much stronger and more solid. He seems to be more determined to win this fight too. Before I can do anything, Gabriel grabs Deimos by the neck and slams him to the ground. I can hear Deimos's head cracking, and I thought that this must be the end of it. We both wait for him to get up but he doesn't move.He must be dead. I hope to all the gods that he is indeed dead.Gabriel tries to pull me to the door but then Deimos gets up and lunges at him, tackling him to the ground and straddling him. He punches Gabriel in the jaw and he groans, but he bucks off Deimos a
ROMAN.To my surprise, he gets down on his knees and starts to bow to me. “But if you’re suspicious of me, just kill me right now. I don’t want to go back in there.”I don’t know what to do. I just stand in front of him. I don’t think I can kill a boy who just made himself really vulnerable to me. There’s something just plainly awful about doing that, so I just lower my knife and touch his back.“I won’t hurt you, but if you betray me, you’re going to die a slow death and I will make sure of it,” I declare. “Get up. How did you know that I was coming?”“Because I gave the Luna Queen a potion that would help her connection get stronger and contact everyone important to her,” he says, trying to get up with shaky knees. “My name is Gabriel.”He’s rambling. His face is pale and it really looks like he’s going to pass out at any moment. I look around to make sure this is not an ambush, and even as we walk together, there’s no one else around. He leads me to a smaller path in the mountain, a
MONICA.“Bring her back to the bedroom,” Deimos orders, motioning the men to take me.But I keep staring at the young man, who’s the only one who’s not looking at me with lust. In fact, he looks like he’s afraid. I don’t know if he’s afraid of me, or what the men around him are asking of him. Either way, he looks like he just wants to get out.I want to look him in the eye so we could communicate something. I feel like he could help me out of here. But of course, that’s just an idea. I want to look at him first, to know if he’s really against this or not.But he doesn’t look up at me.And the men walking with Deimos are now grabbing me by the arm, throwing me back into the room. I fall on my knees, and I instinctively wrap an arm around my belly. I don’t want my baby to be hurt. It’s harrowing that this is what we have to go through. I’m starting to really think about what they plan to do to me, and the more I think about it, the more it gets fucked up.So this is what they want. To ma
MONICA."You promised me!" Deimos is saying in the background.I look down again, my heart beating in my ears now.I think there's only one way to do it without incurring lasting damage.I take a deep shaky breath and call on my wolf. "Are you in there?"Silence. For a while there's only the howl of the wind and the distant rustling of the leaves of the trees in the hill far away. But then, after a few tense moments, the voice of my wolf whispers in my head."It’s time.”Relief floods me. She's the only connection I have from my real life as of now, and I can't be happier."I want you to take over," I reply to her in my head. "I want you to be me and take us out of here.”Her strength fills me. I lean towards the ledge below, but as I do so, the door of the room closes and Deimos's attention is once again focused on me.I whip around and freeze. His eyes are wide with shock. For a second none of us move or speak, but then his face takes on an angry expression. "Get down the ledge," h
MONICA.“NO!”A scream leaves my mouth, so loud and so hoarse that my vision spins. Black spots start to dance in my eyes, but I don’t care. The last boost of adrenaline from my defense mechanism kicks in, and it’s enough for me to break through my restraints and dodge Deimos’s bite. His teeth clack on thin air. And when he lifts his head again, I notice that his eyes are bloodred – he’s overcome by bloodlust. His look is dazed, animalistic, like a wild predator whose only concern is to feed. And that’s when I realize that this is the mating ritual he was talking about. He’s going to actually mark me like Roman did long ago.“Stay back!” I yell at him as he slowly approaches me, his hands snaking around my wrists “Come any closer and I won’t hesitate to kill you!”“This will be quick, sweetheart,” he croons, his long incisors giving him a slight lisp. He looks at me and that wild animalistic look intensifies. He’s like a lion stalking a prey, or a snake coiled to strike. “Don’t shy aw
