“I think you should come home while you heal.”

“I’m fine.”

As long as I don’t move too fast or try to tie my hair or bend down to pick something up. Every sudden movement pulled at the stitches, which made me feel sick. I didn’t have a high pain tolerance, but I knew I should be thankful that I was still alive and survived with only a few stitches.

“Would you like some coffee?” I asked my father.

He lowered my bag to the floor and slowly straightened. I watched his face twist in dismay as he glanced around my apartment. He wasn’t very happy with what he was seeing—that was clear by his expression. My father was used to wealth and even though I had grown up around it too, my apartment didn’t show it.

When I moved out of my parent’s house, I had left all the luxuries behind, except for some of my clothes and very few other necessities. Every single piece of furniture was bought with my own money which I had earned from my job at the library.

My eyes darted around my one bedroom apartment. I tried to see it through his eyes, but failed. There was nothing wrong with it; it was a lot better than our cold and mostly empty family house.

“Another time,” he said. “I have a meeting with—”

“Of course you do,” I interrupted him. “Another time then.”

With a kiss to my forehead and a promise to call him if something happened, he was gone. I stared at the door for a few seconds before I turned around and slowly trudged into the kitchen.

I switched on the kettle and made myself a cup of coffee, then I carried it over to the window seat in the living room, making sure that I moved slowly. The doctor had told me to take it easy, along with a whole list of care instructions.

After finishing my coffee, I carefully leaned back against the pillows and sighed.

For a few minutes, the dark thunderclouds caught my attention. Rain would break the heat wave, but I hoped it wouldn’t cause too many landslides.

With a sigh, I dialed Betsy’s number. Like usual, she answered on the first ring.

“I’ll be there tomorrow, Betsy,” I told her.

“No, no dear,” she exclaimed. “I’ll be fine. You take a few days off to get some rest and heal. I’ll find a volunteer to help me out.”

“There’s really no need to do that,” I argued, but I got distracted when a movement across the road caught my attention. I sat up, frowning. “I’m cleared to go back to work,” I lied and added to end the phone call. “I’ll be there tomorrow. Betsy, I have to go. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay, dear. Have a good night’s rest.”

I hung up and threw the phone aside. Sitting up on my knees, I pushed the window open and leaned forward to get a better look at the alley behind the building. Whatever I had seen moments ago was already gone.

Ever since the attack a few nights ago, I’ve been paranoid, but it had worsened when I learned that the man who stabbed me had gotten away. My father hadn’t told me much, but thanks to the gossiping nurses, I was up to date on everything that had happened since that night.

The man got scared when I just showed up where he had dumped the body. If it wasn’t for Ezra, I was sure that I would’ve been another body added to the long list of unsolved crimes on the island that nobody seemed to really care about.

I shook the troubling thoughts away and closed the window.

Picking up the bag my father had placed on the floor proved to be a challenge. Just bending forward a little made me hiss in pain.

“Stupid bag,” I sneered down at it.

My pain meds were inside it and I needed to take them before I climbed into bed otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to sleep.

With my hands on my hips, I glared down at the bag as I tried to think of a way to pick it up without bending forward. The only way I could think of was to squat like a pregnant woman.

“Only one way to find out,” I muttered.

Shit! It hurt way more than bending. My thigh pressed right against the stitches.

“Son of a—”

“A foul mouth on a lady isn’t very becoming,” someone said from behind me.

I screamed and lost my balance. On my hands and knees, I crawled forward, away from the intruder, until I reached one of the couches. I spun around and dropped to my ass. My mouth dropped open and then slammed closed again.

“Jesus,” I breathed, pressing a hand to my chest. “You scared me.”

“What did I just say about cursing?”

My eyes narrowed on him as he moved around my apartment. He picked up one of the ornaments on the shelf and inspected it silently before placing it back in place.

The man made no sound when he moved which confused me because he was big, a lot bigger and more muscular than Ezra and Devrim.

“W-what are you doing in here?” I questioned when he said nothing else.

His eyes shot over to me, but immediately darted away again. “Why are you sitting on the floor?” he asked instead of answering my question.

I bit my lip as I debated my answer.  “Well, some bastard scared the shit out of me and since every movement I make hurts, I can’t get up.”

Is it my imagination, or did his lips twitch? Is he laughing at me?

He walked back and stopped in front of me. Dark eyes silently watched me. It felt like he was staring right through me instead of at me.

He took a step closer, making my eyes drop to his crotch that was almost eye level. I’ve never cared about a guy’s dick before, but I was curious to find out if his dick looked the same as a human’s dick.

“Keep staring, darling,” he rasped. “I might let you have a little taste.”

Colour flooded my cheeks and my eyes quickly darted away.

“Are you in pain?”

“Y-yes.”

“Pain is good. It makes you remember that you’re alive.”

He moved too fast for me to comprehend. One second, I was sitting on the floor, and the next, I found myself on my feet and glued to his front. I blinked up at him as I tried to catch my breath.

There was something about him that felt so familiar. It wasn’t until he tilted his head slightly to the left that that I remembered where I had seen him before.

At the main house, when I had been asked to deliver some books for them. He had been watching me from the trees.

“Your name is O-Obsidian, right?” I asked him, remembering someone mentioning it.

He gave me a stiff nod, but his eyes narrowed.

My eyes darted away from his to the scar on the left side of his face that ran over his eye.

How had he gotten that scar?

Without meaning to, I reached up and traced the ragged line with my fingertip. His lips parted and his eyes fluttered closed, but his reaction didn’t last long.

He suddenly growled and pushed me away, making me stumble backwards. I almost tripped, but managed to regain my balance before I could fall.

For the first time since he entered my apartment, fear filled me.

His fists were clenched at his sides and his lips parted slightly. I took note of his erratic breathing. Is he about to have a panic attack? Can they even have panic attacks?

“O-Obsidian?”

I took a step towards him with one shaky hand outstretched. Just before I touched him, he flashed sharp teeth at me and stormed out of my apartment.

What did I do?

  • Promised to the Panthers   EPILOGUE + EXTENDED EPILOGUE: VANYA

“Hey, mama.”My eyes snapped up and my lips curled into a smile. I had no idea where he learned that, but I wasn’t going to lie and say that I hated it when he called me that.Dev hovered in the doorway of the kitchen, eyes locked on me. “How are you feeling?”“A little achy,” I told him honestly. He straightened and hurried over to me. Dropping to his knees by my legs, he reached out and placed his hand on my stomach. In return, one of the babies decided to kick. Chuckling, he pushed the shirt up to expose my large stomach. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to the spot. A low purr filled the air, instantly relaxing my muscles. Cupping my stomach with both hands, he pressed another kiss to my skin and then slowly raised his head to look at me. “We have a surprise for you.”“A surprise?” I blinked at him. “Where are your shoes?”I nodded towards the living room. “Come on.”Standing, he gripped my hands to help me up and led me towards the living room. Dropping to his knees

I hovered in the darkest corner of the room as I stared at them. It was nearing midnight. I had hoped to make it home in time for dinner, but unfortunately I didn’t make it.Vanya was almost halfway through her pregnancy and the house wasn’t finished yet.The foundation had been laid and the walls were up. When I left they had been busy installing the floors.I needed everything to be perfect. It was our new start. The last thing I wanted was for something to upset my mates. Or for Vanya to start stressing. It wouldn’t be good for the babies. A tired sigh fell from my lips, I pulled my shirt over my head and entered the bathroom. I hesitated a moment before gently closing the door behind me.After opening the shower tap, I walked over to the cabinet and removed the knives.Once undressed, I stepped into the shower. My eyes fluttered closed as I tilted my head back under the water. Another sigh fell from my lips.I was tired. But I had a few more things to do before I could crawl int

“Vanya could do with some new clothes.”Obsidian glanced at me. “She doesn’t need it,” he muttered.I frowned at him. “Her clothes don't fit her anymore.”“She wears our clothes.”I loved it when she stole our clothes to wear, but I didn’t like it when she went out in public without wearing a bra and underwear.“Betsy mentioned she would need maternity wear soon.” My frown deepened. “I think that’s what she calls it.”Obsidian sighed. “She won’t need it.”I stopped and turned to look at him. He took a few more steps forward before he realized I wasn’t next to him anymore.“Obsidian-”“I lied when I told Vanya that the pregnancy would be nine months. The pregnancy isn’t the same as a human pregnancy. It doesn’t matter if the baby is human or like us,” he said softly. “Vanya will reach full term in five months.”I blinked at him.“If my calculations are correct she’s about four, maybe five weeks pregnant.”I took a step closer and gripped the front of his shirt. “You didn’t think it was

I jerked away with a gasp and stared down at his hand between my legs. “You ripped my pants!”Ezra smirked. “You can change into another pair at your apartment.” Whatever I had been about to say was forgotten when his fingers brushed along my slit.He groaned. “You’re not wearing any underwear.”The colour in my cheeks deepened. “I don’t have a lot that fits me anymore,” I admitted. “Besides, it’s more comfortable to go without.”I felt the sharp tip of a claw brushing against my skin and tensed. “You better not cut me,” I told him. His smirk slipped away and a seriousness that surprised me filled his eyes. “I would never hurt you, Vanya.” My eyes darted over his face. The words hung between us, but we both knew he was referring to Obsidian. Reaching up, I cupped his cheeks and gave him a small smile as I fought the tears threatening to fall. “I know,” I whispered. Ezra leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to the corner of my lips. “I ruined things, didn’t I?” I shook my hea

“Ezra.”I frowned, trying my best to ignore him, but a painful jab in my ribs made my eyes snap open.“We’re leaving.”My frown deepened. “Where are you going?” I asked them. The room was still dark, but both of them were already dressed. Vanya was fast asleep next to me. “We talked about it yesterday.” He glared at me. “Were you even listening?”I nodded and carefully turned on my back. Of course, I remembered. Vanya nearly had a panic attack when Devrim told her they would be going to the mainland for some supplies. It had been a few days since we bonded. We had spent almost every night strengthening our bonds. “Make sure she eats something,” Devrim muttered as he leaned over me to kiss Vanya’s forehead. “Do you need anything?”I blinked at Obsidian. “I’m dreaming.”His eyes narrowed. “I’m only asking because Vanya made me.”“Some art supplies,” I told him. “Vanya asked me to paint the nursery walls.”Devrim muttered a curse under his breath. “She mentioned it. I forgot. You jus

Devrim and Obsidian had talked about things in detail. Obsidian was doing it to make up for the way he had behaved. He figured it would make Vanya feel better. His bond to Devrim had to be kept open so Devrim would know when Obsidian started panicking. He would step in to take Obsidian away so he could calm down, and then it would be my turn to pacify Vanya. It was a good idea, but it wasn’t going according to plan.Vanya didn’t touch him, she pressed a kiss to his chest and settled down with her face pressed to the crook of his neck.Obsidian frowned, but he wrapped his arms around her waist and held her.A soft sigh fell from Vanya’s lips.I settled more comfortably in the chair and rested the book on my knee. I gripped my pencil and started sketching. It was going to be a gift for Vanya. I was planning on drawing her touching him, but I supposed him holding her would mean the same to her.I was so caught up in drawing that I didn’t realize things had escalated until Vanya’s low moa

“We don’t split up,” Obsidian rasped as the car pulled to a stop. “If we do have to split up, we do it in pairs of two, with all of us knowing where the others are going.”“Sounds good,” Devrim muttered, staring out the window. “There are even more people here than there had been the last time we a

“I don’t like this plan.”“Too bad,” Obsidian muttered from his spot on the couch. “It’s the only one we have.”I glared at him as I tugged on the hem of the jacket. “I’m sure—”“Silence, Ezra,” he growled.I hissed at him, but obeyed his command for about two seconds. “I don’t understand why you’r

The sound of a twig snapping from outside had my eyes snapping open. I held my breath and listened carefully. No sound followed immediately after.I blew out the breath and relaxed again. It was probably one of the wild animals looking for food. Turning onto my side, I reached for Vanya and pulled
