One Year After The Wedding

New York City

Adrian Cole — 29

Marcus Bennett — 30

Sarah Bennett — 28

Kai Bennett — 10

Eleanor Cole — 28

Adrian Cole had spent most of his life believing happiness would arrive loudly.

A major achievement.

A record-breaking deal.

A moment that would make the entire world stop and notice.

But marriage taught him something different.

Happiness was quieter than that.

It was Eleanor leaving a cup of coffee beside his laptop every morning because she knew he would forget to make one.

It was coming home after a fourteen-hour day and finding her asleep on the couch because she had promised herself she would wait for him.

It was her stealing the blankets in the middle of the night and denying it every morning.

It was hearing someone say his name and feeling like, for the first time in his life, he belonged somewhere.

Before Eleanor, Adrian’s apartment had been exactly that.

An apartment.

A place with expensive furniture, clean lines, and everything carefully arranged.

But nothing personal.

Nothing that said someone lived there.

Eleanor changed that.

Slowly.

A flower vase appeared on the dining table.

Pictures appeared on the walls.

Books she loved found their way onto his shelves.

A blanket she always used somehow became permanently placed on the sofa.

One evening, Adrian stood in the living room looking around.

Eleanor noticed.

“What?”

He turned to her.

“Nothing.”

“You’re staring.”

“I’m realizing something.”

She raised an eyebrow.

“That’s dangerous.”

He smiled.

“This place used to feel like a showroom.”

“And now?”

Adrian walked toward her.

“Now it feels like home.”

For Eleanor, that meant more than any expensive gift he could have bought.

Because she knew Adrian.

She knew the man everyone else saw.

The CEO.

The perfectionist.

The man who could negotiate anything but struggled to admit when he was tired.

But she also knew the man underneath.

The one who laughed at terrible jokes.

The one who secretly loved old movies.

The one who always checked if everyone else was okay before asking about himself.

Marcus noticed the change first.

Of course he did.

He had known Adrian since university.

He knew the old Adrian.

The one who lived on coffee, deadlines, and ambition.

The one who thought sleep was optional.

The one who believed emotions were things you handled privately.

So when Adrian started leaving work early…

Marcus noticed.

When Adrian started saying no to meetings because he had dinner plans…

Marcus noticed.

When Adrian smiled at his phone before answering Eleanor’s calls…

Marcus definitely noticed.

One afternoon, Marcus walked into Adrian’s office and found him staring at his phone.

A smile on his face.

Marcus stopped.

“Who are you and what have you done with Adrian?”

Adrian looked up.

“What?”

“You smiled.”

“I smile.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“Not like that.”

Adrian rolled his eyes.

“You’re dramatic.”

“I’m serious.”

Marcus sat down.

“She changed you.”

Adrian looked at the picture on his desk.

It was Eleanor.

Laughing.

A moment someone had captured without her knowing.

His expression softened.

“She did.”

Marcus smiled.

“And you’re okay with that?”

Adrian looked genuinely confused.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

Because Marcus knew the old Adrian.

The man who had spent years building walls.

And somehow…

Eleanor had found the door.

The Bennett household became even louder after the wedding.

Not because anything changed.

But because nothing really did.

Adrian and Eleanor still spent every Sunday with Marcus and Sarah.

Kai still treated Adrian’s house like his second home.

He walked in without knocking.

He opened the fridge without asking.

He gave opinions nobody requested.

“Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“When I’m older, I’m going to be rich.”

“Good.”

“And famous.”

“Okay.”

“And taller than you.”

Adrian looked at the ten-year-old standing in front of him.

“That one might take a while.”

Kai frowned.

“I eat my vegetables.”

Marcus laughed from the kitchen.

“You’ve been saying that for years.”

“Because it’s true.”

Sarah smiled.

“And why exactly do you want to grow so tall?”

Kai looked at Adrian like the answer was obvious.

“So I can marry him when I grow up.”

The room went silent.

Then everyone laughed.

Adrian shook his head.

“Kai.”

“What?”

“You know I’m already married, right?”

Kai looked at Eleanor.

Then back at Adrian.

“She can share.”

Marcus nearly choked on his drink.

“Absolutely not.”

Kai crossed his arms.

“You’re ruining my plans, Dad.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Eleanor.

She walked over and gently tapped Kai’s nose.

“You know you’re my favorite little troublemaker, right?”

Kai smiled.

“Okay.”

Then he looked at Adrian.

“But I still asked first.”

A year later…

Everything changed again.

But this time…

It was the kind of change everyone welcomed.

Eleanor stood in the bathroom staring at the test in her hand.

She had taken it three times.

Just to be sure.

When Adrian came home that evening, he immediately knew something was different.

Eleanor was waiting for him.

Quiet.

Smiling.

He dropped his keys on the table.

“What happened?”

She walked toward him.

And placed the small test in his hand.

For once…

Adrian Cole had no words.

He looked at it.

Then at her.

Then back again.

“Eleanor…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“We’re having a baby.”

The man who had faced some of the most intimidating rooms in the world stood completely frozen.

“You’re sure?”

She laughed softly through her tears.

“Yes.”

A smile slowly appeared on his face.

Not the polite smile he gave investors.

Not the confident smile people expected.

A real one.

The kind Marcus had not seen in years.

He pulled Eleanor into his arms.

“We’re having a baby.”

When they told Marcus and Sarah…

Sarah cried.

Actually cried.

Marcus hugged Adrian so tightly Adrian complained he couldn’t breathe.

“You’re going to be a father.”

Adrian smiled.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You’re going to be the kind of father this world needs.”

Adrian looked away.

Because that meant more than Marcus realized.

When they told Kai…

It became the biggest announcement of his life.

“A baby?”

“Yes,” Eleanor said.

Kai looked between them.

Then his eyes widened.

“I’m going to be a big brother?”

“Well… technically—”

“I HAVE A JOB.”

Everyone laughed.

“What job?” Adrian asked.

Kai stood straighter.

“Protecting the baby.”

Marcus smiled.

“And what does that involve?”

“Making sure nobody bothers him.”

“Her,” Sarah corrected.

“Or her.”

Kai nodded seriously.

“And teaching them basketball.”

Adrian laughed.

“You already planned everything?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then Kai looked at Adrian.

“Will you still have time for me?”

The question was small.

Almost hidden beneath the excitement.

But Adrian heard it.

He crouched down.

“Always.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Kai smiled.

Satisfied.

The months that followed were some of the happiest of Adrian’s life.

He attended every appointment.

Read every parenting book he could find.

Built the nursery himself.

Although Eleanor had to remind him several times that assembling furniture was not the same as negotiating a business deal.

“You look stressed.”

“I am stressed.”

“It’s a crib.”

“It has instructions.”

She laughed.

“You’ve handled billion-dollar contracts.”

“Yes.”

“And this scares you?”

Adrian looked at the crib.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because this matters more.”

For a while…

They were happy.

Completely.

Perfectly.

Until they weren’t.

Not because they didn’t know what to say. Because they hadn’t expected those words. The scholarship letter still lay open on the table. A letter students across the country dreamed of receiving. A full scholarship. Tuition. Accommodation. Books. Living expenses. Everything. Sarah looked from the letter to her son. “Kai…” “You’ve worked so hard for this.” Kai stared down at his untouched dinner. “I know.” Marcus leaned back in his chair. His expression calm. Too calm. “Then help me understand.” Kai remained silent. “Why don’t you want to go?” A long pause. “I just don’t.” Marcus sighed. “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the only one I’ve got.” ⸻ The silence stretched. Three Months Later New York City Adrian Cole — 36 Marcus Bennett — 37 Sarah Bennett — 35 Kai Bennett — 17 ⸻ The Bennett household had developed a new routine. Every evening after dinner… The dining table disappeared beneath a mountain of papers. University brochures. Application forms. Recommendation letters. Scholarship requirements. Deadlines highlighted in different colors. Sarah called it organized. Marcus called it controlled chaos. Kai called it torture. ⸻ “I have another essay.” Marcus didn’t even look up from his laptop. “Good.” “I’ve already written six.” “Then you’re getting better.” “I’ve had enough.” “You’ll survive.” Kai groaned dramatically before letting his forehead fall onto the dining table. “I think college applications were invented to punish teenagers.” Sarah laughed as she placed a plate of sliced fruit in front of him. “No.” “They were invented to prepare teenagers.” “For what?” “Suffering.” Even Marcus couldn’t stop himself from

According to Marcus Bennett… It was the age where boys suddenly believed they knew everything. According to Sarah… It was the age where they still needed reminding to take their laundry downstairs. According to Adrian… It was the age where the future stopped feeling distant. It started asking questions. Questions no one else could answer for you. What do you want to become? Who do you want to be? What kind of life do you want to build? Kai had begun asking himself those questions more often than he admitted. ⸻ His final year of high school arrived faster than anyone expected. Football training became more intense. Exams became more demanding. University brochures covered the dining table almost every weekend. Marcus had opinions. Sarah had concerns. Kai had headaches. ⸻ One Saturday afternoon… The entire Bennett family was sitting in the back

  • Promises We Never Forget   Chapter Ten: The Promise He Couldn’t Keep

Four Years Later New York City Adrian Cole — 35 Marcus Bennett — 36 Sarah Bennett — 34 Kai Bennett — 16 ⸻ Time had a funny way of changing people. It stretched little boys into young men. Turned scraped knees into football trophies. Replaced cartoons with textbooks. Replaced bedtime stories with late-night study sessions. But some things… Never changed. Every Sunday, Adrian still showed up at the Bennett house. Sarah still made enough food to feed an army. Marcus still insisted he was the king of the barbecue despite burning something every single time. And Kai… Kai still announced to anyone willing to listen that one day, he was going to marry Adrian. Marcus had long since given up arguing. Sarah simply laughed. Adrian always answered the same way. “I’ll let you know when the application opens.” Kai would grin. “I’ll be first in line.” ⸻ At sixteen… Kai had grown into a confident teenager. Already taller than Sarah. Almost eye-to-eye with Marcus. His sho

One Year Later New York City Adrian Cole — 31 Marcus Bennett — 32 Sarah Bennett — 30 Kai Bennett — 12 ⸻ The silence in Adrian’s apartment had become familiar. Too familiar. There were mornings he woke up expecting to hear another heartbeat beside him. Instead… There was only the hum of the air conditioner. He no longer reached for Eleanor. He had taught himself not to. Some habits died slower than others. ⸻ Work became his language. He arrived before sunrise. He left long after midnight. The employees at Aiden Corp joked that the CEO didn’t have a home. They weren’t entirely wrong. ⸻ One Friday evening… Adrian was halfway through reviewing another acquisition report when someone knocked once before walking into his office. Marcus. Without looking up, Adrian sighed. “I’m busy.” Marcus dropped a paper bag onto the desk. “I brought burgers.” “I’m still busy.” “I know.” “I’m not leaving.” “I know.” Marcus pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. “I

  • Promises We Never Forget   Chapter 8: The Day Their World Stopped (Part Two)

The funeral was private. That was what Eleanor wanted. No cameras. No flowers from business associates. No reporters. No public condolences. Just family. Marcus. Sarah. Kai. And two parents saying goodbye to the child they never got to bring home. ⸻ Kai didn’t understand everything. He was only eleven. He knew the baby wasn’t coming anymore. He knew Aunt Eleanor cried whenever she thought nobody was looking. He knew Adrian had stopped smiling. But he couldn’t understand why. He had spent months drawing pictures for the baby. He had already decided they would support the same football team. He had even saved one of his favorite stuffed bears because babies weren’t supposed to sleep alone. Now… The bear sat untouched in his bedroom. Waiting for someone who would never come. ⸻ The house was unbearably quiet. Not because it was empty. Because it was full of things no one could bear to touch. The nursery door remained closed. Neither of them opened it. Not for
