The Packhouse wasn’t just a house; it was a fortress draped in rich, dark wood and expensive stone. The air inside smelled of beeswax and Alpha power—a crushing, masculine scent that made my Fae instincts scream in submission. I was hauled up a spiraling staircase, past guards who treated me like dangerous vermin, and finally shoved into a room high in the main tower.

The door slammed shut behind the guards with a heavy, final sound. I stumbled forward, my legs giving out, hitting the thick, luxurious rug on the floor.

This room was larger than five homes in the Hollow combined. Sunlight streamed through tall windows draped in velvet, illuminating a massive bed, polished furniture, and a private washroom. It was beautiful and utterly suffocating.

A cage. I am a captive. I belong to him now. And I hate how weak I am, that I can’t fight.

The sound of the door opening again sent a fresh wave of panic through me. It wasn't a guard; it was Alpha Riccardo. He stood in the doorway, his figure blocking the light, his molten eyes colder than they had been at the checkpoint.

“Stand up, Fae.” His voice was low, devoid of the raw heat that had flared when he touched me. It was purely the voice of the ruler.

I scrambled to my feet, my legs unsteady, clutching the silver Wolf’s Head mark that had burned itself onto my chest. Even covered by my thin Ghetto robe, it felt like a brand.

Riccardo didn’t move closer, treating me like I carried a plague.

“You will address me as Alpha, King, or your Lord,” he commanded, his jaw tight. “You will not leave this room. You will not look at my Betas. You will not look at me unless I command it.”

I swallowed, nodding mutely.

He took a slow, painful breath, and I could see the battle in his posture. He was trying to crush the mate bond, to deny the raw connection that had nearly destroyed his composure hours ago. He was using contempt as a shield.

“You are not my Mate. Do you understand that word, Fae? Mate implies worth, equality, a soul recognized by the gods. You are nothing to me. You are a liability.”

He stepped forward just one pace, and the intensity of his presence made me flinch violently. But as he spoke the hateful words, something deep inside me ached. Beneath the cold disdain in his eyes, I could feel a fierce, sharp pull, like a chain that had suddenly shortened and pulled tight between our chests. It was terrifying, this electric knowledge that the bond was real, no matter how much his conscious mind rejected it. The Wolf’s Head mark on my chest pulsed with a dull, throbbing heat, a painful reminder that his hatred was fighting something ancient and true.

“The connection that occurred at the border,” he continued, his voice sharp as broken glass, “is a mistake. My instinct tells me to claim you, to brand you, to take you, and that is an unacceptable weakness. You are Fae. You are weak magic. Therefore, I will treat you with the contempt you have earned. You are an asset. A prisoner. Any attempt to use the bond against me, any flicker of defiance, and I will find a way to nullify your existence here.”

His words were meant to destroy, to make me hate him back, but the raw, confusing pull of the bond only intensified the pain. It was a twisted truth: the one man I was supposedly fated to be with was the one most dedicated to seeing me suffer. Tears pricked my eyes, blurring his already terrifying figure.

“Do not try to make me feel. Do not try to tempt me,” he warned, his voice dangerously low. “I will not hesitate to punish you, Fae. This captivity will be your personal hell until I decide what to do with the abomination on your chest.”

He turned sharply, leaving me alone with the devastating weight of his rejection and the agonizing throb of the unwanted mate bond. The door clicked, the heavy lock sliding into place.

I stood there for a long moment, the silence broken only by my ragged breathing. Then, the walls came down. I sank to the floor, my hands covering my face, and the tears came hot and fast—tears of sheer, bone-deep terror, shock, and the profound pain of that brutal rejection. It was more than just fear of death; it was the pain of being labeled an abomination by the one person fate had tried to tie to my soul.

I curled into a ball on the luxurious rug, sobbing uncontrollably. Riccardo hates me. The Elders were right. I am worthless, disposable.

My thoughts spun wildly, landing instantly on the single person I truly cared about.

Silas. What about Silas?

I whispered the question into the silent, suffocating room. I came here so he could get the medicine. I came here so the Werewolves wouldn't burn the Ghetto. If they keep me, if he rejects the supplies because they were late, what will become of him? Did I give myself up for nothing? Is he lying sick, perhaps already gone? The possibility of his death—my only brother, my only protector—cut through the pain of the mate bond, replacing it with a fresh, overwhelming wave of grief and desperate worry. My sacrifice suddenly felt pointless, my fear doubling down on itself.

“Oh, darling,” a soft voice murmured, like the whisper of dry autumn leaves.

I gasped, dropping my hands. I hadn’t heard the door open. A woman was standing by the window. She was small, dressed in the simple, dark grey uniform of a Packhouse maid, but she wasn’t like Elara or the other Ghetto Fae. Her eyes were deep brown, and her smile was heartbreakingly kind.

“You need to breathe, sweet girl,” she said, stepping closer. “He can feel your fear through the stone. Don’t give him that power.”

She knelt beside me, her touch feather-light and cool on my arm. Her touch wasn’t painful, it was just comfort, the first kindness I’d felt in days. I sobbed, leaning into her without thinking.

“Who… who are you?” I managed to choke out.

“My name is Maria,” she said simply, rubbing circles on my back. “I was just assigned to ready the room. You have the look of someone who has carried a burden too long.”

“He hates me. He said… he said I’m worthless.”

“Kings are often blind, Nova,” Maria whispered. She looked at the floor, not at me, but her brown eyes seemed intensely knowing. “That mark doesn’t mean weakness. It means destiny. Don’t you think the man who has to share a connection with someone he despises has to crush the link first? He’s frightened of you, too.”

Her words offered a quiet perspective I hadn't considered.

“I feel… strange, Maria. Since the mark flared, I feel buzzing. Like a hunger, and sometimes the air around me gets cold.” I looked at my wrist, still tingling under the cover of my sleeve.

Maria gave me a gentle squeeze. “The buzzing is your power, little spark. It’s waking up. When you feel the cold, think of stillness. Silence. That’s how you control a new gift, by finding the stillness inside the chaos.” She spoke with the authority of someone who understood magic, not just floor scrubbing.

Before I could ask her to explain the cold or the stillness, her head snapped up toward the door.

“I must go. He sent an official handmaid, and I can’t be seen here right now. But remember: stillness.” Maria stood quickly, giving my hand one last, warm press.

She was gone before I could even process the warning. She simply turned and slipped out the door, moving with a strange grace.

Moments later, the lock clicked again, and the door opened. This time, the woman who entered looked much more like a standard Fae maid: pretty, small, with a deceptively delicate appearance. She carried a tray of food.

“Hello,” the woman said, her voice warm and immediately soothing. Her smile was soft and genuine, the kind that promised safety. “My name is Aura. I’ve been assigned to care for you, Nova.”

Aura. The contrast between her warmth and Riccardo’s ice was almost too much to bear.

“You’re… Fae?” I asked, relief flooding my chest. A friendly face.

“Yes, from a neighboring district,” she confirmed, setting the tray down. She moved quickly, tidying the small disorder I’d made, instantly establishing herself as an aide. “I know this is terrifying, Nova. Being taken by the Alpha King… it’s a cruel fate. But I am here now. I will make sure you’re comfortable, and that you have everything you need.”

She looked so genuinely supportive, so kind, that a tiny seed of hope, small and frail, sprouted in the ashes of my fear. She was a comfort, a distraction from the crushing reality of my new owner. Aura was the quiet, sweet antidote to the savage, cold presence of Riccardo.

I watched her, her delicate movements seeming to soften the harsh edges of the room. She was so easy to trust. She promised comfort, but I knew, deep down, that in this life, every kindness likely came with a hidden price.

I touched the Wolf’s Head mark again, no longer just a symbol of shame, but a brand of ownership by a man who hated me. I was trapped, rejected, and yet, suddenly, my meek body housed a strange, new, cold power, and the memory of Maria’s warning—stillness—lingered like a promise.

The door slammed shut, and the heavy lock clicked into place. I stumbled back into the room, my entire body shaking so hard my knees almost buckled. My hands flew to my chest and the side of my neck. The heat under my skin was unbearable. The Wolf’s Head mark on my chest burned like hot metal, but the new mark beneath my jaw pulsed with a wild, rough energy that made my breath hitch. Two of them. Two brutal rulers tied to my soul.I sank down onto the rug, pulling my legs tight against my chest. My mind raced, tumbling over the nightmare that had just happened in the hallway. I could still see the dark fury in Riccardo’s gold eyes and the raw, dangerous look in Leonidas’s green ones. They hated each other, and they hated my species. Yet their wild instincts wanted to tear the world apart just to hold me.Why me? I buried my face in my arms, tears spilling over my eyelashes. I am nobody. I am just a weak girl from the Hollow. How am I supposed to survive this?My chest felt tight, like

A week passed in a blur of velvet curtains and cold stone. It felt like a lifetime. The highest tower room, once so grand, had become the physical definition of my dread. My life had shrunk to a small, suffocating routine. Aura, my kind Fae handmaid, was my only constant. She brought my meals, helped me bathe, and listened patiently to my mumbled worries about Silas. She was gentle and spoke often of the Ghetto, a connection I desperately needed, even if Maria's earlier, fleeting warning about "stillness" kept a tiny knot of caution tight in my belly.Riccardo, the Alpha King, was still terrifying. After his initial, soul-crushing rejection, I hadn’t seen him. I ate, slept, and breathed under the unseen weight of his ownership, but I never heard his voice or smelled his clean, mountain-rain scent near my door. He kept his distance, a deliberate, political cruelty meant to starve the mate bond he hated. But the bond wouldn’t starve. Every night, the Wolf’s Head mark on my chest pulsed

  • Property of the King’s   The Alpha's Violent Claim

The journey from the Hollow had been a nightmare of anticipation. Every rustle in the trees, every scent carried on the wind, convinced me a Lycan patrol or a Werewolf scout was about to find me and drag me into the shadows. I pulled the cart through the dusty territory we shared, my heart a dull, terrified drum against my ribs.I kept my head low, the scent of pine and something musky and primal growing stronger. When the trees finally thinned, I saw it. The Werewolf border checkpoint. It wasn’t just a line in the dirt; it was a fortress carved from dark stone, sharp and unforgiving. Guards, massive in their black and grey uniforms, stood at attention. Their eyes, a chilling yellow, scanned the area, missing nothing. They looked like creatures built for war, not peace.I stopped, gulping air. The fear in my throat tasted like copper. I reached up, checking the scarf wound tightly around my wrist. The shame-mark was hidden.Just deliver the cart. Don’t speak unless spoken to. Don’t ma

  • Property of the King’s   The Disposable Fae

I was on my knees, brushing the cracked tile of the washroom. I hunched over, trying to disappear into the task. Disappearing was what I did best.Nova Hayes. Twenty-one years old, and the most invisible Fae in the Ghetto. The Ghetto was a small, miserable corner of the world we called the Hollow, trapped between the towering, unforgiving territories of the Lycans and the Werewolves. Here, everything was grey, the sky, the mood, the worn-out robes we all wore. But I was different, marked by something that made me easily despised by others. My hair wasn't the usual Ghetto brown or red; it was a strange, silver-white and my eyes were a completely purple. But that wasn't the worst of it. The worst was the mark.I tugged the sleeve of my robe down, covering the inner curve of my right wrist. Most species received their Mate Mark, if they had one, on their chest—a symbol that only fully appeared when they met their Mate. Mine was incomplete, a half-formed, delicate spiral, and it was in t
