She was born with a heart that should have belonged to no one. Lyra Veyne has spent eighteen years believing she is an ordinary village girl. She knows nothing about her mysterious silver birthmark, the nightmares that follow her, or the strange way the forest seems to whisper her name. Until her eighteenth birthday. That night, twelve ancient bells ring for the first time in centuries—and four powerful men arrive at her doorstep. A ruthless prince. A cursed lord of shadows. An immortal prince with secrets. A warrior king who refuses to kneel. They come for Lyra because she is the last Heart Queen, a legendary woman whose magic can awaken, bind, and destroy the hearts of kings. They were supposed to capture her. They were supposed to hate her. Instead, something impossible happens. Their heartstones begin beating whenever she is near. As Lyra is drawn deeper into the dark world of Veyrith, she discovers that the four men aren't strangers. They have loved her before—in lives she cannot remember—and each lifetime has ended in blood, betrayal, and death. But the ancient prophecy everyone fears may be a lie. Someone has rewritten history. Someone has spent centuries hiding the truth. And the immortal Hollow King, Malachor, is willing to destroy kingdoms to claim Lyra's heart. Now Lyra must choose between the destiny forced upon her and the future she wants for herself. Because the four men may be willing to give her their hearts... But Lyra refuses to belong to anyone. Four kings. One queen. Four hearts. And when the Heart Queen finally awakens, every crown in the kingdom will have to choose: Kneel before her—or burn with her.

CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WITH THE SILVER HEART

Chapter 1

The bells of Veyra Village had never rung twelve times.

Not in living memory.

There were eleven bells in the old chapel tower, each one made from dark iron and marked with the crest of the kingdom. The villagers knew their sounds as well as they knew the seasons.

One bell for morning.

Two for prayer.

Three for a funeral.

Five for danger.

And eleven for the beginning of winter.

But on the morning of Lyra Veyne's eighteenth birthday, the bells rang twelve times.

The first bell sounded before sunrise.

Dong.

Lyra opened her eyes.

For several seconds, she lay completely still beneath her thin blanket, staring at the wooden ceiling of her small bedroom.

Dong.

The second bell echoed through the village.

Lyra frowned.

Outside her window, the sky was still dark blue, the first light of dawn barely visible beyond the mountains.

Dong.

Third.

She sat up.

Something felt wrong.

The room was cold.

Not the ordinary morning cold she was accustomed to, but a strange chill that seemed to come from inside the walls.

Lyra pulled her blanket around her shoulders.

Dong.

Fourth.

She looked toward the window.

Beyond the glass stood the Whispering Forest.

During the day, it was beautiful.

Silver-leaved trees stretched toward the sky, their branches covered with tiny white flowers. Moon moths lived among the roots, and streams ran through the woods like ribbons of glass.

But villagers never entered the forest after sunset.

They said the trees remembered people.

They said the forest could hear names.

And they said that sometimes, if you wandered too deeply, you would hear someone calling you from behind.

Even when nobody was there.

Lyra had always loved the forest.

Her mother had taught her never to fear it.

The forest is old, her mother used to say.

Old things are not always evil.

Her mother had been gone for years.

But Lyra still remembered her voice.

Dong.

Fifth.

Lyra climbed out of bed.

Her bare feet touched the cold wooden floor.

Something beneath her nightdress began to burn.

She gasped.

Her hand flew to her chest.

Pain spread beneath her ribs.

“Ah…”

She stumbled toward the mirror.

The old mirror hanging beside her wardrobe was cracked across one corner. Lyra looked into it.

Her long dark hair was tangled from sleep.

Her face was pale.

Her silver-gray eyes looked unusually bright.

And beneath her collarbone, just above her heart, a strange light was shining through her skin.

Lyra froze.

Slowly, she pulled the fabric of her nightdress aside.

A silver crescent marked her chest.

She had never seen it before.

But somehow, she knew it had always been there.

Hidden.

Sleeping.

Waiting.

Dong.

Sixth.

Lyra pressed her fingers against the mark.

The moment she touched it, a wave of warmth rushed through her body.

And then she heard a heartbeat.

Not hers.

Something much deeper.

Something enormous.

Boom.

Her room trembled.

Lyra stepped backward.

“What…”

Boom.

The heartbeat came again.

The windows rattled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Outside, dogs began barking.

People were shouting in the streets.

The chapel bells continued.

Dong.

Seventh.

Lyra hurried downstairs.

Her father was already standing in the kitchen.

He was holding a knife.

Not a kitchen knife.

A sword.

Lyra stopped.

She had seen that sword only once before.

It had been hidden beneath the floorboards.

Her father had told her never to touch it.

“Father?”

He turned.

The expression on his face frightened her more than the sword.

He looked terrified.

“Lyra.”

“What is happening?”

“Where is your mark?”

She stared at him.

“How do you know about it?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he crossed the room and grabbed her shoulders.

“Listen to me carefully.”

“Father, you're hurting me.”

He released her immediately.

“I'm sorry.”

His eyes moved toward the window.

Another bell rang.

Dong.

Eighth.

“There isn't much time.”

Lyra's heart began pounding.

“What time?”

Her father looked at her chest.

“The time we prayed would never come.”

“What are you talking about?”

He took a slow breath.

Then he said the words that would destroy everything Lyra believed about herself.

“You are not an ordinary girl.”

Lyra stared at him.

“What?”

“You haven't been.”

She laughed nervously.

“Is this some kind of birthday joke?”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I wish it were.”

Outside, the villagers screamed.

Lyra moved toward the window.

“What happened?”

“Stay away from it.”

She ignored him.

She looked outside.

People were running through the streets.

A horse had broken free from a carriage.

The baker was standing in the middle of the road, staring toward the forest.

Every animal in the village was behaving strangely.

Dogs were hiding.

Horses were kicking against their stable doors.

Birds had completely disappeared.

And the forest…

Lyra's breath caught.

The trees were moving.

Not because of the wind.

There was no wind.

Every tree at the edge of the forest was slowly bending toward the village.

Toward her.

Dong.

Ninth.

Lyra stepped away from the window.

“What is happening?”

Her father locked the front door.

“Get your coat.”

“Why?”

“We're leaving.”

“Leaving where?”

“Veyrith.”

Lyra stared at him.

The capital.

The kingdom's ancient seat of power.

A place she had only heard about in stories.

“Why would we go there?”

“Because they are coming.”

“Who?”

He didn't answer.

The tenth bell rang.

Dong.

Then came the eleventh.

Dong.

The village fell silent.

Lyra could hear her own breathing.

Her father gripped his sword.

“Stay behind me.”

A sound came from outside.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Scratch.

Something was dragging its claws across the wooden door.

Lyra's blood turned cold.

Her father moved between her and the entrance.

The scratching stopped.

Silence.

Then—

BOOM.

The door exploded inward.

Lyra screamed.

Her father swung his sword.

Something dark flew through the doorway.

It looked like a wolf.

But it was far too large.

Its body was made of black smoke and bone.

Its eyes burned red.

Her father struck it.

The creature slammed against the wall.

Another creature appeared behind it.

Then another.

Lyra backed away.

“What are those?”

Her father shouted,

“Run!”

Lyra couldn't move.

The largest creature turned toward her.

Its lips pulled back.

Its teeth were enormous.

It lowered its head.

And then something strange happened.

The silver mark over Lyra's heart began glowing.

The creature stopped.

Its growl disappeared.

It stared at her.

Then it lowered itself to the floor.

Lyra's mouth fell open.

The creature bowed.

Her father stared.

“No…”

The other creatures slowly turned toward Lyra.

One by one, they lowered their heads.

Lyra could hear something inside her mind.

Not a voice.

A command.

Come.

She took one step forward.

The creatures moved aside.

Her father grabbed her arm.

“Don't.”

Lyra looked at him.

“Why are they doing this?”

His eyes were filled with fear.

“Because they recognize you.”

“Recognize me as what?”

He looked at the silver mark.

“As their queen.”

The twelfth bell rang.

Dong.

Every sound in the village stopped.

The final bell echoed across the mountains.

Then the sky changed.

Clouds gathered above Veyra Village.

The moon appeared in the middle of the daylight.

Not the normal moon.

A huge silver moon.

And beneath it appeared a crown made of black fire.

Lyra stared upward.

She heard a whisper.

Not from her father.

Not from the creatures.

From somewhere beyond the village.

“She's awake.”

Her father's face went pale.

“Lyra…”

“What?”

He looked toward the forest.

“They found you.”

Far away, beyond the mountains, inside the kingdom of Veyrith, four men opened their eyes at exactly the same moment.

Prince Caelan Veyr stood in the highest tower of Veyrith Castle.

He had been awake for hours.

He was dressed in black armor trimmed with dark blue, his sword hanging at his side.

Normally, the prince could sleep through anything.

Tonight, something had disturbed him.

A strange pressure had appeared inside his chest.

He pressed a hand against it.

His blue heartstone was glowing.

Caelan frowned.

The stone had never reacted like this.

A servant entered the room.

“My prince.”

Caelan looked toward him.

“What is it?”

“The eastern watchtower has reported something unusual.”

“What?”

“The ancient Heartstone has awakened.”

Caelan went still.

“Impossible.”

The servant swallowed.

“They say the Heart Queen has returned.”

Caelan's jaw tightened.

“Don't use that name.”

“My prince—”

“I said don't.”

The servant bowed.

“Yes, Your Highness.”

Caelan looked toward the distant mountains.

Somewhere beyond them, something had awakened.

Something his family had feared for generations.

Something he had been taught to hate.

The Heart Queen.

Caelan looked down at his glowing heartstone.

For the first time in twenty years, he felt afraid.

In another kingdom, beneath a ruined cathedral, a man opened his eyes.

Darian Noctis sat in darkness.

Shadows moved around him like living creatures.

He had been asleep.

But now he was awake.

His black heartstone was glowing.

Darian slowly stood.

The shadows whispered around him.

A name.

A name he had not heard in centuries.

“Seraphine.”

He closed his eyes.

“No.”

The shadows whispered again.

“Seraphine.”

Darian's face tightened.

“She's dead.”

But the heartstone pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

A memory flashed through his mind.

A woman standing beneath a silver moon.

Long dark hair.

Silver-gray eyes.

A smile he had never forgotten.

Darian opened his eyes.

“Not again.”

He looked toward the east.

“She came back.”

In the golden kingdom of Aurelis, a man stood on a balcony overlooking an enormous city.

Lucien Aurelis had been awake when the bells began ringing.

He had felt the awakening before anyone told him.

His golden heartstone had burned against his chest.

Lucien touched it.

He smiled sadly.

“So you finally found your way back.”

A servant approached.

“My prince?”

Lucien didn't turn.

“Prepare my horse.”

“Where are you going?”

Lucien looked toward the mountains.

“To Veyrith.”

“But the roads are dangerous.”

Lucien smiled.

“They always are when she returns.”

The servant stared at him.

“She?”

Lucien's expression became distant.

“The girl I've been waiting centuries to see again.”

Far north, in the kingdom of Drakhar, Riven Drakhar was training when his sword suddenly broke.

He stared at the broken blade.

The warrior king rarely lost control.

But something had shaken him.

His red heartstone glowed against his chest.

Riven pressed his hand against it.

He felt warmth.

Then pain.

Then a memory.

A woman.

Silver eyes.

Blood on her lips.

His own arms around her.

Her whisper:

Don't follow me.

Riven's eyes widened.

He dropped the broken sword.

“No.”

He looked toward the south.

“The Queen.”

Back in Veyra Village, Lyra stood frozen.

Her father was pulling supplies from a hidden compartment beneath the floor.

Food.

Water.

A cloak.

A small silver dagger.

And a letter.

He handed the letter to her.

“Your mother wrote this.”

Lyra stared at the envelope.

Her mother's handwriting.

She hadn't seen it in years.

Her hands trembled.

“She knew?”

“Yes.”

“Knew what?”

“Everything.”

Lyra opened the letter.

Inside was only a single sentence.

When the bells ring twelve times, trust the forest—but never trust the men who come for you.

Lyra looked up.

“What men?”

Her father didn't answer.

A horn sounded outside.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Her father looked toward the road.

“They're here.”

“Who?”

Four horses appeared through the mist.

The first rider wore dark blue armor.

The second seemed almost part of the shadows.

The third wore gold.

The fourth wore dark red.

Four men.

Four kingdoms.

Four heartstones.

Lyra stepped toward the window.

The first rider dismounted.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, with black hair and cold blue eyes.

Prince Caelan Veyr.

The second rider dismounted silently.

His eyes were black.

Darian Noctis.

The third smiled as he removed his golden cloak.

Lucien Aurelis.

The fourth threw his reins to a guard and walked toward the village.

Riven Drakhar.

Lyra's heart began beating faster.

She had never seen any of them before.

Yet something inside her whispered:

You know them.

The four men stopped outside her house.

Caelan looked directly at the window.

His eyes met hers.

For one impossible moment, Lyra saw something behind his face.

A battlefield.

Fire.

Blood.

His arms around her.

A crown lying in the dirt.

Then the vision disappeared.

Lyra gasped.

Caelan looked shaken too.

Riven stared at her as if he had forgotten how to breathe.

Lucien's smile disappeared.

Darian closed his eyes.

All four heartstones began glowing.

Lyra's silver mark burned.

Her father stepped in front of her.

Caelan raised his voice.

“Lyra Veyne.”

She swallowed.

“Yes?”

“We've come for you.”

“Why?”

Caelan hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because you are the Heart Queen.”

Lyra shook her head.

“No.”

Darian stepped forward.

His voice was quiet.

“But you are.”

“I don't know you.”

His eyes met hers.

Pain flickered across his face.

“You don't remember.”

Lucien looked at her with an expression filled with centuries of sadness.

“You will.”

Riven stared at her.

“I thought you were dead.”

Lyra's heart skipped.

“What?”

Riven looked confused.

“I mean…”

He stopped.

Caelan stepped closer.

“There's no time.”

Lyra's father raised his sword.

“You won't take her.”

Caelan's eyes hardened.

“We're not here to hurt her.”

“Then why are you armed?”

“Because something worse is coming.”

As if summoned by his words, a roar echoed from the forest.

The creatures outside turned toward the sound.

The ground shook.

Trees fell in the distance.

Lyra felt something ancient moving beneath the earth.

Something that knew her.

Something that had been waiting.

Then a voice whispered inside her mind.

My little queen.

Lyra froze.

She knew that voice.

She had never heard it before.

But somehow she remembered it.

The sky above Veyra turned black.

A shadow appeared beyond the forest.

A figure stood beneath the silver moon.

Tall.

Ancient.

Wearing black armor.

Silver-black hair.

Golden eyes.

Malachor.

The Hollow King.

He looked toward the village.

Toward Lyra.

And smiled.

“My Heart Queen.”

Lyra's blood ran cold.

Her silver mark blazed.

The four men immediately drew their weapons.

Malachor lifted one hand.

Every creature in the forest bowed.

Every tree bent toward him.

Then he spoke.

“After a thousand years…”

His smile widened.

“You have finally come home.”

Lyra couldn't breathe.

She didn't know who she was.

She didn't know why four kings had come for her.

She didn't know why the forest bowed.

She didn't know why an ancient monster called her his queen.

But one thing suddenly became clear.

Her ordinary life was over.

The girl who had spent eighteen years believing she was nobody had disappeared the moment the twelfth bell rang.

And somewhere deep beneath the kingdom of Veyrith, an ancient heart began to beat.

Boom.

Lyra touched her chest.

Boom.

The four heartstones answered.

Boom.

The earth trembled.

And a final whisper entered her mind.

They will kneel.

Lyra looked at the four men standing before her.

They will love you.

She looked toward Malachor.

And they will die for you.

Lyra's eyes widened.

“No.”

The silver light around her exploded.

The creatures screamed.

The four kings stepped backward.

And deep beneath Veyrith Castle, something ancient opened its eyes.

Malachor smiled.

“The Heart Queen has awakened.”

And the darkness began to rise.
