SIENNA ~

I was halfway through restocking the recovery shakes when the locker-room door slammed open and the entire Vancouver Vipers spilled out in a wave of sweat, laughter, and the sharp smell of ice.

I didn’t look up. I’d learned that lesson years ago. Eye contact with half-naked hockey players was a fast way to get dragged into conversations I had zero interest in having at seven-thirty in the morning.

“Morning, Vale.”

Cole’s voice was low and easy as he leaned against the doorway of my tiny nutrition office. Head athletic trainer. Thirty-four. The only man on staff who never tried to charm me and never treated me like I was fragile after my divorce. I trusted him more than I trusted most people, which still wasn’t saying much.

“You’re early,” I said, sliding another case of protein onto the shelf. “That’s new.”

“Couldn’t sleep.” He scratched the back of his neck. “Kai’s already on the ice. Kid’s been here since five.”

I kept my face carefully blank. “Good for him.”

Cole’s mouth tilted like he wanted to say more, but he just nodded and walked off toward the treatment tables. Smart man.

I finished the shakes, locked the fridge, and stepped out into the hallway just as the rookies started filtering past. Most of them were still wide-eyed and trying too hard. Then Kai Rivera appeared, helmet under one arm, hair damp and sticking up in every direction, that same cocky half-smile he’d been wearing since he was sixteen and I was still pretending he was just Maya’s annoying little brother.

He saw me and the smile got bigger.

“Sienna.”

The way he said my name always felt like he’d practiced it, low and warm, like we were already in on some private joke I hadn’t agreed to.

“Rivera.” I kept my voice flat. “You’re supposed to be icing that shoulder, not living on the ice.”

He stopped right in front of me, close enough that I could smell the cold still clinging to his skin. Six-foot-four of pure muscle and bad decisions. Twenty-two years old and already looking at me like he’d decided something and was just waiting for me to catch up.

“I iced it,” he said. “Then I got bored. Figured I’d come find the only person in this building who actually tells me the truth.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Flattery doesn’t get you extra carbs.”

“Wasn’t flattery.” His eyes dropped to my mouth for half a second, then came back up. “Just a fact.”

My pulse did that stupid little jump it always did around him. I hated it. I was thirty-two. Divorced. The team nutritionist. The last person who should be standing in a hallway feeling anything at all about her best friend’s little brother.

“Go shower,” I said. “You’re dripping on my floor.”

He grinned slowly and stepped past me. His shoulder brushed mine deliberately. Then he was gone, whistling something under his breath like he hadn’t just tried to set my entire nervous system on fire before eight a.m.

I exhaled hard and walked back into my office, shutting the door harder than necessary.

My phone buzzed on the desk.

Maya:

Coffee later? I have gossip and I need your face.

I typed back with one hand while pulling up the day’s meal plans.

Me:

Only if you bring the good pastries. The ones with the almond filling.

Maya:

Deal. Also… don’t kill my brother today. He’s been weirdly quiet about you.

I stared at the screen.

Don’t kill my brother today.

If she only knew.

I tossed the phone down and rubbed both hands over my face. Outside the small window I could see the parking lot, the mountains in the distance still capped with early August snow. Vancouver in the summer always felt like it was pretending to be somewhere softer than it was.

My phone rang this time. Ex-husband. I let it go to voicemail. He’d left three messages yesterday about Bear. Our dog. The only good thing that had come out of six years of marriage. Now he was using the golden retriever like a bargaining chip because he could.

I didn’t listen to the message. I already knew what it said.

Instead I opened the fridge again, pulled out a cold bottle of water, and pressed it against the back of my neck. The door opened behind me without a knock.

Kai stood there, freshly showered, black team hoodie hanging open over a white T-shirt, looking like every bad decision I’d ever almost made.

“Forgot something,” he said.

I turned slowly. “What.”

He stepped inside and closed the door. The office suddenly felt half its size.

“This.”

He reached past me, grabbed a protein bar from the top shelf, and stayed there a second longer than he needed to. Close enough that I could feel the heat coming off his chest. Close enough that if I leaned forward even an inch—

I didn’t.

He straightened, tore the wrapper with his teeth, and took a bite without breaking eye contact.

“You’re staring, Vale.”

“I’m calculating how many extra sprints I can put on your plan for being a pain in my ass.”

He laughed quietly, the sound did something stupid to the space under my ribs.

“Worth it,” he said, then turned and left like he hadn’t just walked in, stolen the air out of the room, and walked back out with it.

I sat down hard in my chair and stared at the closed door.

This was going to be a problem.

A big, twenty-two-year-old, six-foot-four problem with my best friend’s last name and a smile that made me forget every single reason I was supposed to stay away.

I picked up my phone again and typed one more message to Maya.

Me:

Bring two pastries. It’s going to be a long day.

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    THIS WAS MADNESS

SIENNA ~I stayed up late on purpose today. Most of the team had cleared out after the afternoon session. The hallways were quiet. The only sounds left were the distant hum of the ice plant and the occasional slam of a door somewhere deeper in the building. I told myself I was finishing the weekly recovery reports. The truth was simpler. If I left at the normal time I might run into him in the parking lot, and I was not ready for another one of those looks he kept giving me when no one else was watching.I had spent the entire day avoiding him. When he walked into the weight room I found a reason to be in the kitchen. When he came by the office with a question about his macros I sent the answer through Cole. Every time I felt him nearby I moved in the opposite direction. It was exhausting. It was also the only way I knew how to keep the line from disappearing completely. It almost worked.Until the knock on my door at 7:14 p.m.I knew it was him before I even looked up.“Come in,” I s

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

SIENNA ~I read his text three times before I finally set the phone down.*I meant everything I said. Sleep well, Sienna.*The words sat on the screen. I locked the phone and flipped it face-down on the nightstand, but it didn’t help. I could still see them every time I closed my eyes.Bear was already sprawled across the foot of the bed, snoring like he hadn’t just spent the last hour glued to my side while I paced the apartment.I slid under the covers and stared at the ceiling. I hated how much I wanted to believe him.I rolled onto my side and reached down to scratch behind Bear’s ears. He shifted closer without waking up, heavy head landing on my ankle. The familiar weight should have grounded me. Instead it only reminded me how easily my ex could take even this away if things got messy. One rumor. One moment of weakness and suddenly the quiet life I’d built would be dragged into the same public circus I’d barely survived the first time.Kai didn’t understand that part. Or maybe

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    PERMANENTLY STUCK

KAI~I drove around for almost an hour after I left her place. Not because I was lost. I knew every street in this city better than most locals. I just couldn’t go home yet. Sitting in my apartment staring at the ceiling while her voice still echoed in my head felt like a special kind of torture I wasn’t ready for.*You need to go.*Yeah. I’d heard her. Loud and clear. And I’d still wanted to turn around, walk back up those steps, and kiss the careful look right off her face until she forgot every single reason she kept listing.I pulled into an empty overlook near the water and killed the engine. The city lights stretched out below, Vancouver looking soft and far away. I leaned my head back against the seat and let out a long breath.Thirty-two.She was thirty-two and I was twenty-two and she still looked at me sometimes like I was the same scrawny kid who used to steal extra cookies from her plate at family dinners. Like she was supposed to be the responsible one and I was supposed

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    THAT UNDID HONESTY

SIENNA ~I stayed at the arena longer than I needed to.By the time I finally packed up, the main lights in the practice facility had switched to the dim evening setting and most of the staff had already left. The hallways felt bigger without the usual noise. I liked it that way. Fewer people meant fewer chances for someone to notice that my head wasn’t fully in the game.Bear was waiting when I got home. The second I opened the front door of my small two-bedroom place in Kitsilano, seventy pounds of golden retriever barrelled into me like he hadn’t seen me in weeks instead of nine hours. I dropped my bag and sank down right there in the entryway, letting him climb half into my lap while he tried to lick every inch of my face.“Okay, okay. I missed you too, you big idiot.”He woofed once, tail thumping hard against the wall, then trotted off toward the kitchen like he expected dinner to magically appear. I followed, kicked off my shoes, and went through the familiar routine—fresh wate

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    HE'S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM

SIENNA ~I didn’t get the pastries until almost noon.Maya was already at our usual spot two blocks from the arena, the little café that still smelled like real coffee instead of the watered-down stuff they served in the players’ lounge. She had claimed the corner table by the window and was scrolling through her phone with one hand while the other held a half-eaten almond croissant. She looked up when I walked in and grinned. “You look like someone just told you the season starts tomorrow.”“Feels like it.” I dropped into the chair across from her and reached for the second pastry she’d already ordered. “Your brother's been in my office twice before ten. Once for a protein bar. Once just to stand there and exist.”Maya’s eyebrows went up. “He’s always been intense about training. You know that.”“This isn’t training intensity.” I tore off a piece of croissant and chewed slowly. “This is something else.”She watched me for a second, then leaned forward. “Okay. Spill. You’ve got that l
