THAT UNDID HONESTY

SIENNA ~

I stayed at the arena longer than I needed to.

By the time I finally packed up, the main lights in the practice facility had switched to the dim evening setting and most of the staff had already left. The hallways felt bigger without the usual noise. I liked it that way. Fewer people meant fewer chances for someone to notice that my head wasn’t fully in the game.

Bear was waiting when I got home.

The second I opened the front door of my small two-bedroom place in Kitsilano, seventy pounds of golden retriever barrelled into me like he hadn’t seen me in weeks instead of nine hours. I dropped my bag and sank down right there in the entryway, letting him climb half into my lap while he tried to lick every inch of my face.

“Okay, okay. I missed you too, you big idiot.”

He woofed once, tail thumping hard against the wall, then trotted off toward the kitchen like he expected dinner to magically appear. I followed, kicked off my shoes, and went through the familiar routine—fresh water, measured kibble, the little joint supplement the vet had put him on last year. Normal things. Anchoring things.

My phone lit up on the counter while I was washing my hands.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it. Then I saw the preview.

**Unknown:**

It’s Kai. Maya gave me your number years ago. Don’t be mad at her.

I stared at the screen for a full five seconds.

Then another message came through.

**Kai:**

I’m outside.

My stomach dropped.

I walked to the front window and pulled the curtain back just enough. His black truck was parked across the street under the streetlight. The driver’s side door opened and he stepped out, hands in the pockets of his hoodie, looking up at my building like he already knew which window was mine.

I should have stayed inside.

I should have texted him to leave.

I should have done a lot of things.

Instead I opened the door.

Kai crossed the street slowly, like he was giving me time to change my mind. When he reached the bottom of the steps he stopped and looked up at me.

“I know this is crossing a line,” he said. “I just… I couldn’t go home and sit with everything I said earlier.”

Bear pushed past my legs and trotted down the steps, tail wagging like Kai was his favorite person on earth. Traitor. Kai crouched immediately, both hands sinking into the thick fur behind Bear’s ears.

“Hey, buddy,” he murmured. “Missed you too.”

I crossed my arms. “You’ve met my dog?”

“Maya brings him to family stuff sometimes.” He glanced up, still scratching. “He’s a good listener. Better than most people.”

I didn’t know what to do with the fact that my ex’s former best friend’s little brother knew my dog better than I realized. I stepped back and held the door open.

“Five minutes,” I said. “Then you leave.”

He nodded once and followed me inside.

The apartment suddenly felt too small. Kai filled the space without trying—tall, broad, still carrying that faint scent of cold air and clean soap. Bear circled his legs once and then collapsed on the rug with a dramatic sigh, clearly deciding the visit was approved.

I stayed standing near the kitchen island. Kai didn’t sit either. He just looked around quietly, taking in the framed photos on the shelf, the stack of nutrition journals on the coffee table, the single wine glass still sitting by the sink from last night.

“Nice place,” he said.

“It’s fine.”

He turned to face me fully. The playful edge he’d worn all day was gone. What was left looked older.

“I meant what I said earlier, Sienna” he said. “ don't want to pretend. But I also heard every word you said back. I get it. The age thing, the team, Maya, your ex… it’s a lot.”

“It’s more than a lot.”

“I know.” He took one step closer, then stopped himself. “I’m not here to push you into anything tonight. I just needed you to know I’m not playing around. This isn’t some rookie crush I haven’t grown out of.”

My throat felt tight. “Then what is it?”

He held my gaze without flinching. “It’s the reason I still remember the exact dress you wore to my high school graduation. It’s the reason I asked Maya a hundred questions about you after every family dinner. It’s the reason I almost turned down the call-up last year because I didn’t know if I could be in the same building as you every day and keep my mouth shut.”

The honesty in his voice was worse than any line he could have tried.

I looked away first. “You shouldn’t have come here.”

“Probably not.”

“And you shouldn’t have my number too”

“Also true.”

Silence stretched between us. Bear’s soft snoring was the only sound for a while.

Finally I said, “This is sick. If this blows up, it doesn’t just hurt me. It hurts Maya. It hurts your season. It gives my ex exactly what he needs to take Bear and drag me through more legal hell. I’ve already survived one public mess, Kai. I don’t have it in me to survive another.”

He nodded slowly, like he’d already thought through every single one of those points.

“I’m not asking you to risk everything tonight,” he said. “I’m just asking you not to shut the door completely on me. Let me prove I’m worth the risk. That’s all.”

I wanted to tell him no.

I wanted to tell him to leave and never bring this up again.

Instead I heard myself say, “You need to go.”

He didn’t argue. He just walked over, crouched one more time to scratch Bear’s ears, then straightened and moved toward the door. When he reached it he paused with his hand on the knob.

“For what it’s worth,” he said without looking back, “I’ve never wanted anything the way I want the chance to be good to you.”

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    THIS WAS MADNESS

SIENNA ~I stayed up late on purpose today. Most of the team had cleared out after the afternoon session. The hallways were quiet. The only sounds left were the distant hum of the ice plant and the occasional slam of a door somewhere deeper in the building. I told myself I was finishing the weekly recovery reports. The truth was simpler. If I left at the normal time I might run into him in the parking lot, and I was not ready for another one of those looks he kept giving me when no one else was watching.I had spent the entire day avoiding him. When he walked into the weight room I found a reason to be in the kitchen. When he came by the office with a question about his macros I sent the answer through Cole. Every time I felt him nearby I moved in the opposite direction. It was exhausting. It was also the only way I knew how to keep the line from disappearing completely. It almost worked.Until the knock on my door at 7:14 p.m.I knew it was him before I even looked up.“Come in,” I s

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

SIENNA ~I read his text three times before I finally set the phone down.*I meant everything I said. Sleep well, Sienna.*The words sat on the screen. I locked the phone and flipped it face-down on the nightstand, but it didn’t help. I could still see them every time I closed my eyes.Bear was already sprawled across the foot of the bed, snoring like he hadn’t just spent the last hour glued to my side while I paced the apartment.I slid under the covers and stared at the ceiling. I hated how much I wanted to believe him.I rolled onto my side and reached down to scratch behind Bear’s ears. He shifted closer without waking up, heavy head landing on my ankle. The familiar weight should have grounded me. Instead it only reminded me how easily my ex could take even this away if things got messy. One rumor. One moment of weakness and suddenly the quiet life I’d built would be dragged into the same public circus I’d barely survived the first time.Kai didn’t understand that part. Or maybe

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    PERMANENTLY STUCK

KAI~I drove around for almost an hour after I left her place. Not because I was lost. I knew every street in this city better than most locals. I just couldn’t go home yet. Sitting in my apartment staring at the ceiling while her voice still echoed in my head felt like a special kind of torture I wasn’t ready for.*You need to go.*Yeah. I’d heard her. Loud and clear. And I’d still wanted to turn around, walk back up those steps, and kiss the careful look right off her face until she forgot every single reason she kept listing.I pulled into an empty overlook near the water and killed the engine. The city lights stretched out below, Vancouver looking soft and far away. I leaned my head back against the seat and let out a long breath.Thirty-two.She was thirty-two and I was twenty-two and she still looked at me sometimes like I was the same scrawny kid who used to steal extra cookies from her plate at family dinners. Like she was supposed to be the responsible one and I was supposed

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    HE'S GOING TO BE A PROBLEM

SIENNA ~I didn’t get the pastries until almost noon.Maya was already at our usual spot two blocks from the arena, the little café that still smelled like real coffee instead of the watered-down stuff they served in the players’ lounge. She had claimed the corner table by the window and was scrolling through her phone with one hand while the other held a half-eaten almond croissant. She looked up when I walked in and grinned. “You look like someone just told you the season starts tomorrow.”“Feels like it.” I dropped into the chair across from her and reached for the second pastry she’d already ordered. “Your brother's been in my office twice before ten. Once for a protein bar. Once just to stand there and exist.”Maya’s eyebrows went up. “He’s always been intense about training. You know that.”“This isn’t training intensity.” I tore off a piece of croissant and chewed slowly. “This is something else.”She watched me for a second, then leaned forward. “Okay. Spill. You’ve got that l

  • Protecting My Heart From The Jock    SIX-FOOT FOUR PACK OF HOT

SIENNA ~I was halfway through restocking the recovery shakes when the locker-room door slammed open and the entire Vancouver Vipers spilled out in a wave of sweat, laughter, and the sharp smell of ice.I didn’t look up. I’d learned that lesson years ago. Eye contact with half-naked hockey players was a fast way to get dragged into conversations I had zero interest in having at seven-thirty in the morning.“Morning, Vale.”Cole’s voice was low and easy as he leaned against the doorway of my tiny nutrition office. Head athletic trainer. Thirty-four. The only man on staff who never tried to charm me and never treated me like I was fragile after my divorce. I trusted him more than I trusted most people, which still wasn’t saying much.“You’re early,” I said, sliding another case of protein onto the shelf. “That’s new.”“Couldn’t sleep.” He scratched the back of his neck. “Kai’s already on the ice. Kid’s been here since five.”I kept my face carefully blank. “Good for him.”Cole’s mouth t
