Chapter 4

Izariah-

Finally, today was the day we would be getting the results back from our exam, that we took a week ago. Staring at my phone, I was growing impatient as I waited. My roommate had already received hers, but I was still waiting.

The longer it took to receive my results, the more I started to worry. I felt that I did good, but maybe I had messed up because I had been in a rush to get out of there. My anxiety was at an all-time high right now, which was obvious as I bounced my leg up and down.

“Try refreshing it. It could be possible that it is taking a while because everyone is receiving them around the same time. It could just be the system is overwhelmed.” My roommate suggested.

Tapping on the refresh button, I waited for the page to load. When I didn’t think I could take it any longer, the screen changed, and my results now appeared. I let out a squeal as I jumped off the small couch that was in our dorm room.

“I passed!” I yelled.

“You act like this is a surprise. Obviously, you did, and I am guessing you scored the best out of everyone.” My roommate rolled her eyes but then smiled at me.

I was at the top of my class, but even I had moments when I stressed over test scores. With how hard I worked to keep my scores at the top of my class, I was always anxious that my results wouldn’t be worth my efforts. I was simply happy that I managed to keep my scholarship for another semester.

Hugging my phone to my chest, I sat back down and squealed. “If I had the money, I would say we should go out and celebrate.”

“We can wait until you are a famous doctor and rolling in the money.” My roommate laughed as she reached over and grabbed my phone from my hold.

Moving closer to her, I peered over her shoulder to take another look at the red letters on the screen that indicated that I passed. For this past week, I have been doubting myself because I had flown through the test quickly and I had been distracted. Now that I could see that I passed, I was overjoyed.

“This has to be a perfect score!” My roommate gasped and her jaw dropped.

I wasn’t sure if it was without looking into it more, but I wasn’t worried about it. The only thing I cared about was the fact that I passed. Reaching over I grabbed my phone out of her hand.

The moment it was back in my possession, my phone rang, and the Dean of Admissions number popped up on my screen. I wasn’t sure why they were calling, but I had a feeling it had to do with my scholarship funds or my test results. Tapping on the green icon to answer the phone, I held it to my ear.

“Hello?”

“Would you mind coming to the office? I have a few things I need to discuss with you. Also, I have a package for you.” The Dean said, then hung up without waiting for a response.

Confused, I looked at my phone before shoving it into my hoodie pocket. Getting off the couch, I grabbed my shoes and slipped them on. I didn’t know why the Dean couldn’t just tell me over the phone, but I was hoping the package was the new school identification card I ordered.

After losing my bag last week, I had to spend what little money I had and get a used bag and order another card. I had other things in the bag as well, mostly school supplies, but I had plenty of that in my desk. I really needed my school card though.

Telling my roommate, I would be back later, I left the dorm room. It didn’t take long for me to reach the administrative building. When I arrived, the Dean was standing outside of her office with a wide smile on her face.

“Thank you for coming so quickly.” She said as she motioned for me to enter her office.

“I wasn’t doing anything in particular.” I told her as I slipped past her.

The first thing I saw when I was inside was two medium boxes with my name written in bold letters on the side. Not sure what was going on, I hesitated before sitting down on the chair across from her desk. My eyes moved from the boxes and then to the Dean as she sat down behind her desk.

“I have wonderful news for you. You have been accepted into SGU.” She said with far too much excitement.

SGU, also known as Silver Guardian University, was the most prestigious school that existed amongst our kind. Only the strongest of the strong could get in. I had no idea why they would want me. This had to be a joke.

From what I knew of the school, it consisted of high-ranking members and future leaders. I have mostly heard rumors about the school, but I never really paid attention. Unless someone could present concrete evidence, I never cared much about listening to the rumor mill. Most of it was just gossip.

What I have heard, however, is that most of the people that attended the school were rich snobs that came from large packs. It was expensive to attend the school, so most high-ranked members from smaller packs didn’t attend. I also heard that students practically ran the school.

From everything I heard, I never had any interest in attending the school. While I might gain a higher standing within the werewolf community, I highly doubt I would get a better education. I wasn’t anything special and it didn’t take a genius to figure out that I wouldn’t be accepted.

“I am perfectly fine staying where I am.” I told the Dean.

Her attitude quickly changed, and she looked at me as if I just offended her. “Do you know how rare it is for anyone to transfer to that school?” She asked, only to answer herself before I had the chance to. “It is so rare that it just doesn’t happen.”

“I understand that, but if you can’t tell, I am not really suited to attend a school like that. While I have a scholarship here, I still work two jobs just to maintain everything that isn’t covered. There is no way I could afford that school.”

“Oh, you don’t have to worry about that. They are giving you a full-ride scholarship that will cover everything from books, housing, food, and clothing expenses.”

My jaw went slack at her words. Again, this had to be a joke. Why would a school like that offer to pay for everything, especially when I wasn’t anything special? Everything besides my grades was basic, if not less. My rank alone was enough reason for me to believe that this was all a joke.

“With all due respect, I still think I should stay where I am. The programs here are top-notch and this is the school I have always dreamed of attending.”

Technically it wasn’t true, but it wasn’t a lie either. I have always wanted to attend this school, but only because I knew I couldn’t afford it anywhere else. If I had my pick of schools, I wouldn’t have chosen this school.

It wasn’t that it was a bad school, but I didn’t find it difficult enough. I would still be able to find a reputable job after graduating. I just wish I could gain more from the education I was receiving, at least enough to challenge me. The most challenging thing at this school was balancing work, studying, and scheduling.

“I appreciate your loyalty, but it really isn’t necessary. I must urge you to reconsider transferring because it will help our university out so much. We will get a lot of publicity from someone like you being transferred to SGU.”

Now it was starting to make sense. Well, at least why she seemed so determined to convince me to leave. This was all just a publicity stunt. What better way to promote the school than to have a nobody be hand-selected by a respected school?

“Oh, and these are supplies you will need to start school. Since it is a private school, they do ask that everyone wear uniforms. Inside these boxes are a few different uniforms, a new book bag, all the material you will need for your classes, and so much more.” She continued while nudging the boxes in my direction.

Before she knocked them off her desk, I quickly reached out to grab them. Setting them on the floor, I looked from them and then back up to her. Her hands were clasped in front of her as she leaned forward on her desk.

Just looking at her made me disgusted. She was selling me out for the sake of the school. Fine. I will go to SGU, only because I no longer wanted to go to a school where they were so willing to sell out their people. Either that or I never really belonged here either.

Bending over, I picked up the boxes and then stood up. “As you wish. I will transfer schools.”

“Great!” She clapped, then pushed a folder across the desk. “Take this with you and read it over. Everything you need to know about the transfer will be explained here. There is no need to do anything since your parents have already signed off on your transfer. You will attend classes at SGU starting Monday morning.”

Since my hands were already holding the boxes, she placed the folder on top of the boxes before shoving me out the door. All the way back to my dorm, I ranted about how I was just being handed off. I was sure I received a lot of strange looks from other students that I passed by.

Although I was more focused on the fact that even my parents had agreed to send me to a different school. I couldn’t really blame them though, because they were more than likely thinking about my best interest. It was pretty messed up how the Dean of Admission underhanded me like that.

Arriving at my dorm, I thought that my roommate would understand my frustrations, but no. Even she was excited to see me go. She helped me pack and all the while she kept going on about how lucky I was.

By the time all my stuff was packed and ready to go, I had accepted my own fate. There was nothing keeping me at this school any longer. I might as well make the most of the hand I was dealt.

Besides, what was the worst that could happen?
