Chapter 2

مؤلف: Biggo
"Why don't you take a little more time to process this?" Michael suggested. "Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson will come over in three days to bring you home themselves."

He took his leave, but he left behind the photocopy of the asset transfer agreement for the Fergusons' billion-dollar fortune.

No one would have any complaints if they were handed a massive fortune just like that—but in the first place, one had to stay alive to be able to enjoy the wealth.

The four of us, who normally spent all our time sabotaging one another, fell silent. In the end, without anyone having to suggest it, we all sat down to have a proper discussion.

They had all seen the birthmark on my lower back. Luke had even found the locket in my suitcase, which was said to have belonged to the Fergusons' real son. Plus, there was my face, too. There was no question as to who the real son was.

That was exactly why the three of them had a hard time grasping the situation as well.

"So you're saying that even the DNA test proved that you're biologically related to them... but they still killed you?"

"Have you guys forgotten about it already?" I snapped back irritably. "You guys came to collect my body, but there was nothing but a pile of broken bones for you to claim! Why are you still questioning me about it?"

Luke sighed. "Well, you're not wrong about that. After seeing that gruesome sight, I ended up having nightmares for days!"

Tom frowned. "You think we're questioning whether you were really killed? Isn't it obvious that we're questioning why they treated you like a fake when you're obviously the real deal?"

Nobody knew the answer. Even though the four of us put our heads together, we couldn't come up with a plausible explanation.

"What should we do now?" Luke asked, his expression troubled. "The four of us are the only ones who match the age profile. There's no one else in the orphanage who might be their son.

"And with how psychopathic that entire family is, I'm starting to think that if no one admits to being their son three days from now, they'll kill us all."

It went without saying that none of us wanted to die. After considering every possible move, I made a suggestion.

"Ms. Palmer has records of every child who stayed in the orphanage. Maybe we can comb through the information and see if there's been some kind of a mix-up. Maybe someone has already adopted the real son, and it's just a coincidence that I share a resemblance to him."

To survive, everyone was willing to consider every possibility. We all marched right over to see Ms. Palmer, the orphanage director, in her office. Luke had always been her favorite. All he had to do was cajole her for a bit, and she allowed us to check the records.

We pored over the file in the orphanage, checking both the ones who'd been adopted and the ones who hadn't. Alas, the four of us were truly the only ones whose ages matched.

Ms. Palmer informed us that we'd only been a few months old when we were abandoned at the orphanage entrance, so there was no mistake about our ages.

She also revealed another piece of information to us. As it turned out, Mr. Ferguson was certain that his real son had grown up in this orphanage because the housekeeper who'd switched the babies had said it herself.

A wave of despair washed over me. "So the real son really is one of us."

Simon immediately removed himself from consideration, pointing out, "Technically, it can only be you."

I scoffed. "You think the three of you can walk away from this unscathed?"

Their faces paled.

All four of us had died at the hands of the Fergusons before, and all for the same reason. The three of them had even been killed the moment they claimed to be the long-lost son.

None of us dared to take the risk and see if we'd be spared if we just denied being the Fergusons' son.

Gritting my teeth, I said, "There's one more option."

With three pairs of skeptical eyes on me, I continued in a clear voice, "I'll meet the Fergusons and see if I can unearth their secret."

The three of them were deeply touched. They vowed to visit my grave each year and raise a glass in my honor on the anniversary of my death.

I was not at all moved by their gesture.

As it was, I wasn't trying to sacrifice myself for them anyway. More than any of them, I couldn't understand why the Fergusons thought I was an impostor.

If they didn't want to bring me back into the family, they could've just gone on with their lives, pretending that they didn't know about my existence.

Why did they dangle the family fortune in front of me to lure me back before killing me?

I'd read a lot of stories about kids who got switched at birth and parents who ended up favoring the child they'd raised instead of their biological one. Yet none of them ever involved a twist such as this one.

And, knowing how vicious the Fergusons were, I didn't dare walk right up to their doorstep.

Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson also started to grow suspicious of Molly and Hank. Therefore, Molly, Hank, and Gary had to speed things along and lock away the real Fergusons, taking their place. And to get their hands on the family fortune, they launched a search for the real son. They figured that all they had to do was kill off the real son, and the wealth would end up in their hands. The asset transfer agreement I signed was never legally binding. It was only a tool they used to deceive everyone and convince the world they truly loved the son they'd just reunited with. That way, once the real son died, it would be a lot easier for them to escape suspicion. They had never intended to do a DNA test. Afraid of being found out, they focused all their attention on getting the assets as quickly as possible. Therefore, when they saw me at the restaurant, they wanted to bring me home and kill me that very day. However, I ended up escaping their clutches. This also explained why Simon, Tom, and

Tom, Luke, and Simon all had complicated expressions. After a long silence, Tom said, "But it still feels like a bit of a stretch to use that as the sole basis to confirm all three of them aren't the real Fergusons."Seeing the scowl on my face, he hastily added, "We're not doubting you, of course. It's just that we need to find more concrete evidence. Otherwise, considering what we've done, we might end up behind bars soon enough."Simon pointed at Gary and said, "He looks a lot like you. He just doesn't resemble your dad much.""Are you sure you're not just making wild guesses?" Luke mumbled.Simon immediately stomped on Luke's foot and rolled his eyes. "Stop wasting time with such stupid questions. We can just get another DNA test done to confirm whether they're the real Fergusons.""Wait a minute. Didn't they already do a DNA test?" Tom piped up. "It proved that they're related to William, so what's the use in doing another one?"I was starting to get annoyed by their lack o

Simon, Luke, and Tom were more united now than I'd ever seen them. The sight of this left me feeling a little dazed. The orphanage had limited resources, enough to just barely keep the children alive. From the very beginning, we'd get into physical fights over food, just to fill our bellies.I'd long since forgotten who had thrown the first punch. All I knew was that all four of us had the same goal—to steal the other three's food.Sometimes, people would come by the orphanage, looking to adopt a child. While it was obviously impossible for every child to get adopted, we all wanted to be one of the lucky ones. That way, we could finally live a comfortable life. Therefore, apart from doing our best to make a good impression, we would also try to make the other three embarrass themselves, so that the people who came to adopt wouldn't choose them. But in the end, all four of us had failed to get adopted. At the end of the day, we were just pitiful children who yearned for a family a

Even though Mr. Ferguson was howling in pain, he refused to change his story."We really are your parents! We've already given you the family fortune, so why would we try to kill you? I swear, it was just a joke to help you settle in!"Snorting, I increased the voltage of the stun baton. "It's fine if you don't talk. I already know the truth anyway."I only needed the evidence to prove everything. There had to be clues hidden in their room. Grabbing one of the decor items in the room, I knocked them out cold before heading off to search through their things. But I didn't notice that the moment I stepped out, the three people who had been pretending to be unconscious had already freed themselves from the restraints and followed after me.All three of them pounced on me at the same time. They pinned me down in the hallway and started hitting me."Get over yourself, you little bastard! How dare you treat us like that! We're going to make sure you die this time!"Gary stomped on my

Slowly, the bustle died out downstairs. The party had probably ended.I heard approaching footsteps belonging to three people, and they all came marching in after opening the door. Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson had entered with Gary Ferguson, who was supposedly my older brother. The moment the three of them saw me, their expressions instantly twisted with anger."You're nothing but a phony! How dare you show up here pretending to be our son!"The trio shoved me right toward the edge of the balcony, preparing to throw me over."Go to hell!"My body tilted over the edge. It all felt like a repeat of my previous life. But at that very moment, I activated the stun baton I'd been holding the entire time and aimed it at them. They jolted from the electric shock and released me, but I didn't stop there. I continued to stun them again and again, only halting once all three had blacked out. With some difficulty, I dragged the three of them together and arranged them back-to-back, tying them up

"I'm the Fergusons' son," I declared, my voice confident yet helpless at the same time.Simon, Luke, and Tom looked angry enough to hit me. "We also think it's you, but the issue is that the Fergusons will kill you all the same!"They started to fret."The Fergusons went to the trouble of preparing that asset transfer agreement for their biological son to sign once they found him. So why did they kill you after you'd already proven that you're their real son?" Simon clutched his head and wondered."Is it because they thought the DNA report was a fake? That you were lying to them?"I shook my head. "Regardless of the reason, I know one thing is certain—I'm most definitely the long-lost son of the Ferguson family."They couldn't figure out what I was planning, nor could they stop me. In the end, they could only agree to play along with me as needed. On the third day, Michael arrived with the Ferguson couple, who brought the results of the DNA test with them. As expected, the resul
