Chapter 7

Author: Laughing Riot
When Frederick stepped out of the carriage, his hair was a bit messy. It was clear he'd been in close contact with the young woman inside. He hadn't expected to look up and find Selena standing in the wind, watching him.

A breeze stirred, fluttering the soft white fabric of her dress. She looked as graceful and ethereal as ever. It was a complete contrast to Frederick, who had once been carefree and confident, but now looked a little ragged, thanks to Freya.

After he got out, Freya sharply pulled the curtain aside before following him. When she looked up, her eyes immediately landed on Selena's flawless, breathtaking face. Her expression darkened, and she turned to glare at Frederick. The fire of her anger blazed brighter, a mocking smile curling at the corners of her lips.

"Well, your lovely lady is waiting for you over there. Why do you keep pestering me?" She jumped out of the carriage, her eyes burning with hatred as they locked onto Selena. "One day, I'll make you pay for that wound twice over. Anyone who crosses me will face my wrath, no matter how far they run. Just you wait, Selena Campbell!"

Having said that, Freya turned and walked away, showing not a trace of hesitation or regret. Frederick stumbled after her, and in an instant, his tall frame blocked her path.

He gripped her wrist firmly, his voice tinged with displeasure as he said, "The army's march can't be delayed. Stop this nonsense. Whatever it is, we'll deal with it back in the capital."

"Hey, scum, I've made myself perfectly clear. I am not Selena. I won't be like those women who are willing to share you, or serve you for your power and rank. If it's empty flattery and false affection you want, then go to her. Why are you clinging to me?"

Freya struggled fiercely but couldn't break free from the prince's grip.

"Let go! Don't touch me with the same hands that touched her!" she shouted.

Still, Frederick didn't release her.

In a sudden fury, Freya raised her hand and struck him sharply across the face. The loud smack echoed through the silent ranks of soldiers. Every one of them froze, eyes wide, barely daring to breathe. Even Sally felt a chill run down her spine.

He was a prince, the king's biological son!

Even if Freya was headstrong, she shouldn't have laid a hand on Frederick. Did she have a death wish?

Frederick's eyes turned bloodshot with rage. His fingers clenched tighter around Freya's wrist.

"Are you tired of living?" he growled.

Freya was startled by the fury blazing in his eyes, but still wore a proud, defiant look. "You think I'm afraid to die? If you've got the guts, then kill me!"

Frederick didn't kill her. Instead, he lifted her roughly and tossed her back into the carriage. Inside, the sounds of tearing fabric and a woman's screams soon followed.

"Frederick, what are you doing? Let me go! Let me go, you bastard!"

The sky remained clear and bright, with gentle breezes and not a cloud in sight. However, everyone's hearts felt heavy and weighed down.

Selena, Frederick's future princess consort, was here! Yet, at this moment, he was in a carriage with another woman, openly getting intimate with her in front of all the soldiers and even his future wife.

-

It was nearly an hour later when Frederick finally emerged. Of course, he hadn't actually done anything with Freya; his self-control was far better than that. But his hair was disheveled and his clothing was in disarray—worse than before.

The soldiers were still waiting patiently under the bright sunlight, but the graceful figure dressed in white who had been there earlier was nowhere to be seen.

"Where's Lena?" Frederick asked one of the guards.

"Lady Campbell has already left with General Campbell's troops," the man answered with a complicated expression, his cheeks slightly flushed.

Frederick's face darkened. He never expected that Selena would be so petty, so stubborn, to sulk over such a small thing. She wasn't just petty, but reckless too. Didn't she realize that abandoning the army was a capital offense?

"I've spoiled her far too much," Frederick muttered in frustration. "Prepare to depart immediately. We're returning to the capital!"

Torrin finally left, taking the thousand Hartshire soldiers with him.Left behind were the remainder of Nathaniel's troops, now disguised in the uniforms of the local garrison soldiers. Torrin had selected several of his finest men for Selena, and though she knew them to be exceptional warriors, none possessed true command experience. Even they themselves lacked confidence. But she truly had no time to seek help from any other generals. As for the original commander stationed in Hartshire, she didn't know him, nor did she know how loyal he was to the Obsidian Monarch. Should he secretly serve another faction of the royal family, her plan could be ruined. At last, after one final study of the tactical model, she changed into her armor and prepared to leave the tent. Before she could step out, a soldier hurried in. "My lady! A few people have intruded into the camp. The men have surrounded them."Selena's eyes narrowed, moving swiftly toward the commotion. She was soon met by anoth

The news of the Obsidian Monarch's grievous injury had indeed arrived."Where are the scouts?" Selena asked.Having slept through the afternoon, the weariness of her long journey had completely faded.Torrin stepped forward, bringing the scouts into the room. These were men from Hartshire itself, and even the governor, Robert Miller, had come with them."Lady Campbell, our scouts have long traveled the Mount Iron mountain range. Their experience is unmatched, and their reports are never in error," Robert said, his voice edged with urgent anxiety. The town was filled with soldiers that Nathaniel had brought, and he had taken only a hundred men to Mount Iron. Even Robert had not known this, for the main army had yet to return to the town. The soldiers remained hidden outside, moving silently and deliberately, and their presence was carefully concealed. But why? Finally, Robert looked at Selena with wide eyes. "Lady Campbell, His Highness left the army behind outside Hartshire. Cou

"The Yelwyn Cavalry isn't always in the capital. Half our men are busy across the realm. Ronan and I are the only ones of the level you require who accompanied His Highness on this journey, and Ronan followed him to Mount Iron. I was left here to guard Hartshire," Torrin replied, feeling his chest tighten as Selena's words sank in.Suddenly, the sequence of events became clearer to him. No wonder Nathaniel had ordered him to stay behind. By the time the prince rode to Mount Iron, he had surely already understood this danger. Those men didn't merely intend to strike the prince at Mount Iron, they also planned to create chaos here in Hartshire!"But even if they captured Hartshire, they wouldn't be able to hold it once reinforcements from the surrounding cities arrived. Taking the town would be of no use to them," Torrin pointed out. That was why Hartshire's garrison was so small.Selena pressed her lips together, her eyes growing cold and merciless. "According to their plan, the pr

"You must take your men into the stone forest and rescue the 'gravely wounded' Prince Nathaniel," Selena said quietly.Torrin looked utterly bewildered. "But my lady, did you not say that news of His Highness' injury would be false?"And even that was uncertain. They couldn't yet know whether such news would arrive at all. If it did, it might simply be a ploy to lure them away. If they already suspected a trap, how could they truly leave their post?"If you don't go to rescue him, how would those people dare to advance upon the town?" Selena replied. Her delicate brows furrowed, betraying her own hesitation. At last, Torrin understood. So, that was what she meant."If I take my comrades to search for His Highness, what of the townspeople when the enemies come?" he asked, worry still gnawing at him.Though Hartshire had its own garrison, it was a small one.Long before this, Selena and Sebastian had defeated the bandits in the area and driven them from Mount Iron, so the soldiers

Torrin still couldn't reason it out. Hartshire was hardly a wealthy place. If a handful of ruffians had merely entered the town to steal for their own survival, it might have been excusable. But Nathaniel had come to eradicate the people who had crafted those terrifying Thundershells. Anyone capable of forging such weapons couldn't be taken lightly. Such men would never trouble themselves with a poor town like this. There was no profit in it."Lady Campbell..."Selena exhaled slowly. "I imagine he studied the tactical model, examined it thoroughly, and chose his course only after that. Who prepared the tactical model?""It was Ivy Yarrow. She is ranked seventeenth among the Yelwyn Cavalry, and is a master of tracking and reconnaissance," Torrin replied.Anything Ivy built was rarely in error.Selena looked at him with mild surprise. "She is a woman?"Torrin started as if stung. Something had clearly occurred to him, and he hurried to explain, "She may be a lady, but her manner i

Selena cleared her throat, willing the awkward flutter in her chest to settle, then looked at Torrin. "In truth, I—""In truth, His Highness once commanded that should he fall on the battlefield, the command emblem is to be placed in your keeping," Torrin cut her off with quiet firmness."What?" Selena felt her heart lurch, a cold tremor running through her. This was no trifling matter. A token held by the Obsidian Monarch himself carried a weight that could shake the entire realm. But Torrin couldn't possibly be joking about such a matter.Selena stared at him, her breath coming in short, uneven gasps. His expression remained composed as he continued in a gentle tone, "Liam, Cloud, and everyone in the Yelwyn Cavalry know of it. His Highness personally told us this."Selena's fingers curled slowly into her palm. She was speechless. Her emotions were too heavy, tangled between shock and something painfully tender. Why would Nathaniel entrust such a charge to her?Perhaps he fear
