EDRIC’S POV – The Night Before War

The wind refused to still.

It howled through the castle spires like a warning, tugging at the banners that bore my crest—a silver wolf beneath a crescent moon. The clouds were swollen with stormlight, and somewhere in the distance, I could hear wolves howling. Not the trained ones. The wild ones.

They knew.

War was here.

I stood at the highest balcony above the war courtyard, my arms braced against the stone, my eyes fixed on the growing army below. From up here, it looked like a mosaic of movement—soldiers drilling, mages etching runes into cannon shells, werewolves forming squads under glowing torches, and my wolves… my beasts… pacing along the eastern wall, ears up, tails high, teeth bared.

We were ready. But readiness didn’t silence the dread clawing in my chest.

Behind me, footsteps approached.

“Majesty,” said General Vance, bowing low. “The front gates are warded. The last supply convoy from the dwarves just arrived—earth-forged cannons, thunde

THE EARTH ANSWERSThe soil screamed. Roots exploded upward, wrapping around enemy legs. Lightning danced across the ground, detonating stones infused with mana. A storm cyclone formed around me, and from within it, my magic danced like fire.I was the eye of the storm. I was the rage of forgotten queens. And I charged. I met the general head-on—blade to blade—his sword a mass of pain, mine a dance of elemental fury. We clashed again and again. My shoulder split open. His armor cracked. Sparks flew. Blood spilled.“You’re strong,” he growled. “But I am eternal.”“Cute,” I hissed, headbutting him, “but I’m pissed.”And then I cast the spell Kala taught me—Stellar Pulse. My hands lit with starlight, and I drove them into his chest.BOOM.He flew backward, crashing into three orcs. The portal behind him shrieked. The air burned. The wraiths scattered. The wolves howled. And for a moment—Just one—The battlefield paused.VICTORY? NO. BEGINNINGI dropped to one knee, panting. My magic was f

KALA’S POVMEANWHILE: SOUTHERN FRONTThe field burned around me—flames licking at the blackened husks of trees, smoke curling like demon breath into the storm-drenched sky. Rain hissed as it struck scorched earth, turning ash to sludge beneath my boots. I stood in the center of it all, my cloak nothing more than shreds clinging to my shoulders, my lips cracked and bleeding, and my eyes glowing like twin rubies carved from rage itself.I could taste the blood in the air. Could feel it calling. The shattered remnants of the witch covens had circled me like vultures. Serpent-skin armor shimmered around their bodies, enchanted with death runes and cloaking spells. Their eyes were mad with purpose—desperation, hatred, fear.Behind them loomed the bone golems—colossal beasts stitched together from ogre bones, dragon spines, and magic that should never have been touched. Twisting vines pulsed with necrotic energy between joints, writhing like they were alive, like they hated being part of so

I dropped low, slid beneath his legs through the muck and blood, twisted, and drove my sword straight up through his jaw, pushing with both hands as the blade burst from the top of his skull.Wind magic surged through the steel, crackling as his body stiffened, then crumpled with a wet thud.“Stay down,” I hissed, yanking the sword free in a splash of black blood.Another came at me—two axes, wild eyes—I spun, wind catching around my cloak like wings, and kicked him square in the gut. He flew backward, right into a cluster of spellfire from a water mage, who grinned and gave me a salute. And then—because fate has a twisted sense of humor—Mr. Yellow popped out from beneath a broken supply cart nearby. His fur was singed. He had a shield strapped to one paw and what looked like a stolen wand in the other.“Oh sure,” he shouted, dodging a bolt of dark fire with a sarcastic hop. “No one listens to the rabbit when he says ‘maybe we shouldn’t let the hell rift open!’ but now it’s all ‘figh

KYLA POVThe sky cracked open just before dawn. One moment, there was only silence—the kind that coils around your spine and whispers that something is wrong. The next, a jagged slash of fire ripped through the heavy stormclouds like the heavens themselves had been torn in two.And then… it rained. But not water. Not cleansing. It rained ash.Thick, black, stinking ash that fell in slow spirals like death’s confetti, coating every stone, every blade, every inch of bare skin. It clung to my lashes. It filled my mouth with the taste of charred bone and ancient curses. The storm had not passed. It had broken. And it had opened the gates.I stood atop the central wall, the highest point overlooking the southern battlefield. From here, I could see the entirety of the cursed plains—once green, now turned to gray mud and blackened rot. My heart thundered like the drums behind me. Below, the war horns had begun to blow—low and long, each one echoing like a final warning. And then I saw it.Th

The Castle in SightBy twilight, the peaks of the castle towers appeared beyond the trees. Bells rang in the far distance. Somewhere up there, Kyla and Edric were preparing for war. The Moon Queen’s legacy shimmered in Kala’s satchel. And their time alone?Over.Kala exhaled softly.“I suppose this is the part where you get all noble and annoying and swear to protect me forever,” she muttered.Khy shrugged. “I thought I already did that.”“Well, don’t.”“Too late.”She glanced sideways—and her sarcasm faltered. He wasn’t smirking. He was just looking at her. Open. Unafraid. Like she was something carved out of starlight and trouble.Kala swallowed hard. Looked ahead again. They didn’t speak for the rest of the trail. But they didn’t move apart, either. And when the castle gates opened and the light from the inner court spilled across their path—They stepped through together.Still bickering. Still denying.Still burning. And still headed straight for destiny.*****KYLA’S POVThe Cas
